Benji Madden: Cameron Diaz is ‘a modern day feminist’ who shares positivity

Embed from Getty Images Benji Madden has a new extensive interview in Newsweek for the 20th anniversary of his band, Good Charlotte (with his twin brother, Joel). Good Charlotte returned from a multi-year hiatus to release a new album last week. I’m not too familiar with Benji and apart from the fact that he seems to be genuinely in love with and supportive of his wife, Cameron Diaz, I don’t have a strong opinion about him. A quick glance at our archives reminds me that he’s dated several famous women including Paris Hilton and Holly Madison and apart from hearing about his other occasional hookups, I haven’t heard a bad word about him in the 10 years I’ve run this site. No scandals, no paparazzi beat-downs, no DUIs. That’s really saying something. So he seems like a serial monogamist and a standup guy. He’s also very supportive of Cameron, and they’ve each gushed about each other on their social media and to the press. That’s all background to this interview, which just impressed me with how wise and thoughtful he sounds. I mean I don’t agree with him about Cameron Diaz, but he comes across extremely well. On how the music industry can be hard on artists My brother and I feel blessed to have survived and still have loving, connected relationships with each other, with our wives, with our family. We feel like: “Hey, there are a lot of artists who might be able to use our experiences.” We’ve been able to withstand a lot of things in the industry because we had each other. We feel protective of other artists. This is not a business that is set up in favor of artists. It’s important for artists to value themselves—whatever that means. Everyone’s going to take that in a different way. If you don’t value yourself, you will be bought and sold. On the public’s obsession with celebrity I think it’s a very unhealthy trend that will eventually be broken when people realize how hollow it is for our minds, it’s very cancerous…it’s like fast food. Fast food companies are trending down, lots of places are going out of business. People figured out: “This is killing us, it’s f-king terrible.” The celebrity obsession is doing the same thing for our minds—it’s very hollow and I think that trend is going to break soon enough. On how Cameron uses her platform for good I’m extremely proud of what she uses her platform for. She just released The Longevity Book, and before that she had The Body Book [a lifestyle guide to diet and health], and she spent thousands of dollars doing all the research, to get information to share with women who don’t necessarily have the resources to get that information. She’s a modern day feminist—she wants to change the conversation that’s being had about women and ageing. With The Body Book, she wanted to share all this information she has gathered over the years with women so they can live happy, pain-free lives. I’m proud of her because of what a light she is in a world where it would be so much easier to use that stage to promote products. But she’s using that platform she has to share positivity. It’s been one of the most inspirational things in my life watching a woman be so courageous…she’s got so much integrity. I’m a lucky guy that I get to experience that. [From Newsweek] He talks a lot about the industry and about how music gets made and artists are managed, and I didn’t excerpt that as it’s not relevant but it’s worth a read. Benji wants to empower young artists to do it on their own and not get chewed up by the industry, which can be brutal. Getting back to Benji’s thoughts on Cameron, she tried. I covered a lot of the press she did for The Longevity Book and she made some misinformed statements about women and aging, but she tried and she meant well. She’s not an authority on health or aging but she used her platform to try to be. It’s true that she’s not just shilling products, and that’s something. Also, of course I disagree with Benji’s opinion that celebrity obsession is terrible for us. Using his same fast food analogy, you can go to McDonalds and get something to eat once in a while, you just balance your calories and get your nutrients from other meals. Just because you like to follow celebrity news doesn’t mean you’re not informed about more serious events or that you don’t care. Sometimes we need a diversion. Here’s a video that Cameron shared of Benji. She left this gushing caption about how proud she is of him, which seems to be mutual. One of my favorite things about being married, is how much pride I take in my husband @benjaminmadden… He makes me proud everyday.. One day it might be how generous and giving, another how gentle and thoughtful. Or when he is fiercely protective of the people he loves and cares about… And everyday single day I am so incredibly proud of his integrity as a human being.. But TODAY what I'm most proud of is his talent… his gift…. Today his band @goodcharlotteband released their first album in 6 years #YouthAuthority .. What makes me even more proud is that he has released it on his own independent label MDDN… And it is so damn GOOOOOOOOD… Its so full of love and hope and truth… about forging and holding onto love… I wish that everyone could write music to express their pain.. their fears… their hopes and dreams. Bella Thorne: ‘Girls are just mean and so competitive — it’s so crazy’

For my money, Bella Thorne is the new Lindsay Lohan. I don’t mean that Bella is a cracked-out trainwreck. I mean that Bella, who turned 18 years old last October, reminds me strongly of Lindsay when Lindsay was that age. And yes, Bella is gingery and thirsty and she loves it when she’s photographed in various stages of undress, so there is that Lohan vibe to her too. Bella also has a knack for talking sh-t and giving pretty good interviews, so there’s that too. Bella covers the new issue of Galore Magazine, and she talks about real-life mean girls, #AskHerMore and beyond. Some highlights: Girls are so mean: “I don’t get offended because girls are really mean. I will say — no matter where you go in life, it’s high school everywhere. I’m sure in the work office, for you, there’s high school [drama], and there’s one girl who’s bitchier than everybody. Girls are just mean and so competitive — it’s so crazy.” She prefers hanging out with guys: “I’m very chill in that way. Other girls sometimes get really, really like, competitive and catty and ‘Who likes who? You like him? Too bad. I like him. We’re going to have a problem now.’” She is friendly with Mae Whitman & Chloë Grace Moretz though: “They’re all just such homeys. When somebody has a lower vocal range, it’s great because then I’m not the only one that sounds like a man. It’s the girls that are tomboys that I’m so down, any time of day, because I like to get my hands dirty. Germs don’t freak me out, and so I’m really just down to chill, you know, and watch movies. Anybody that can do that, any girls who can do that, you’d be surprised that like, everybody just wants to chill. But it’s not all the time. Girls ask me, ‘Let’s go out? Let’s go to this party? My friend’s famous and we should totally go there.’ And I’m always just like, ‘No! I’m tired, dude. I’m so tired. I just want to go home, watch a movie, sit on Netflix, and eat Top Ramen or order food.’” She works out all the time: “I work out every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. I only really work out my core, abs, and legs, and butt is included in that. I don’t really work out my chest or shoulders all that often because I personally don’t love that look. But what’s really good is jumping squats—really good.” She doesn’t diet: “I eat whatever I want all day long. I eat anything spicy, greasy, fried, with carbs, literally, everything. My skin doctor told me, ‘You need to cut out this, this, this, this.’ I’m like, ‘Shut up! No, I don’t. You just want to make me miserable and dependent on you, and I’m not going to because I’ll eat whatever I want.” She doesn’t believe in #AskHerMore: “When I watch The Oscars, my boyfriend and I have an Oscar party, and they’re like, ‘Okay, we need to record the first part since everyone won’t be here till later.’ And he’s like, ‘Why do you need to see the carpet? You do that all the time.’ And I’m like, ‘OMG bitch, I’m not on the Oscars carpet!’” [From The Daily Mail & Page Six] Of course I was rolling my eyes throughout this piece, but I’d like to say… I think there are many teenagers just like this. This self-absorbed and self-aware, this obsessed with telling you what they’re like and how cool and how chill they are and who’s in their clique and what they think about gender politics because OMG that girl was so bitchy to me. Maybe many of you know some great, amazing, inspiring 18-year-olds, but from what I’ve seen, a lot of them are like this. All I’ll say is that I’m really “over” young women telling people that they’re more of a hang-with-the-guys kind of girl, that all girls are so mean and catty, etc. You don’t sound cool. You sound like the mean, catty person. Photos courtesy of Galore.

The Rock eats candy for the first time in 27 years on The Tonight Show

As a person who thinks candy is a food group, this story is inconceivable to me. While promoting Central Intelligence on The Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that he has not eaten candy in 27 years. After admitting he still loves his cheat days, DJ explained that candy just isn’t his thing and the last piece he had was a Twizzler while watching a movie in 1989. So Jimmy produced an assortment of treats to coax DJ to indulge after two + decades on national television. As always, DJ was happy to oblige. Dwayne Johnson shared a very interesting fact about himself with Jimmy Fallon during a recent appearance on the Tonight Show. The Central Intelligence star, who is known for sticking to a strict diet and workout regimen in order to maintain his impressive physique, admitted that he had not eaten candy since 1989. That’s right! Apparently, the professional wrestler-turned-actor managed to stay away from eating candy for nearly 27 years. When he opened up about the candy-eating hiatus to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Dwayne made it very clear that his decision did not necessarily deal with the boundaries of his strict diet. As many of The Rock’s fans and followers already know, Dwayne is a huge fan of embracing the infamous “Cheat Day” whenever the seemingly rare opportunity to do so presents itself. “I’m just not a big ‘candy guy.’ You know, I love cheat meals. Right? I love that, but I’m just not like… a candy thing.” “It’s crazy how I remember this kind of stuff, right? It’s like ‘Rain Main.’ Twizzlers is the last [candy] I had and we were at a movie theater watching a movie.” Even though Dwayne did not remember the movie that he was watching while eating the Twizzler, it’s still somewhat impressive that he was able to identify the specific type of candy that was consumed. Jimmy Fallon was eager to try and “make a little history” by tempting Dwayne Johnson to eat candy during his Tonight Show appearance – bringing his 27-year hiatus to an end. Instead of eating the entire pack of Twizzlers – or even attempting to take a bite out of the giant gummy worm – Jimmy Fallon decided to feed Dwayne the pop rocks instead. [From Inquisitr] There are a dozen other candies I would have gone with before Pop Rocks but I guess there is some poetry to The Rock ending his candy-fast with Pop Rocks. BTW – Hecate ParenTip: Pop Rocks will entertain your children for hours on a long car ride. They will bounce of the walls when you arrive at your destination but at least your drive will be smooth. The whole segment is worth it just to see DJ seductively swing the giant gummy worm Jimmy had on hand to tempt him. The Rock and Giant Gummy Worm should become a meme. Speaking of memes, Jimmy and DJ did a high school prom skit, in which they morphed into the Ermahgerd character. The skit’s okay but they look fantastic. In case you haven’t seen it already, the Moana teaser trailer, in which Dj voices Maui, dropped last week. Below is the clip of DJ and the Pop Rocks. Like DJ said, he still loves his cheat days. His cheat day meals and puppy pics are just two more great reasons to follow him on Instagram. Kate Bosworth doesn’t eat wheat, sugar or dairy, follows 80/20 diet

These are photos of Kate Bosworth in New York on June 3rd. She was at the launch of an acne treatment, where she was quite overdressed in a pink gown, and out casually dressed in bell bottoms, fug patent flats, and a sleeves striped scoop neck sweater. Self Magazine spoke to Kate at the skincare event about her diet and exercise regime because that’s their subject matter and no one wants to hear what she thinks about fashion. Kate said that she’s on an 80/20 diet, similar to the diets that Gisele Bundchen and Olivia Munn follow, in that she eats a very restrictive diet 80% of the time with indulgences the other 20%. She said that she doesn’t eat wheat, dairy or sugar most of the time but does make allowances when she’s on vacation. I would assume that she eats a very calorie restricted diet regardless, just because she’s so small. She doesn’t look as thin as we’ve seen her in the past though and she does seem healthier overall. “One day in my mid-20s it hit me that I can’t have a burger for lunch. I’m going to fall asleep,” she said in a recent one-on-one interview with SELF during the launch of Aczone Gel 7.5 percent, a topical acne treatment. So what’s in her fridge to keep her going through the post-lunch slump? Bosworth stocks up on lean meat, fruits, avocados, walnuts, eggs, and olive oil—ingredients packed with healthy fats. And while she’s filming The Art of More, she is following a wheat-free, sugar-free, dairy-free meal plan (except for goat cheese and goat milk). For Bosworth, a typical breakfast might include a goat cheese omelet with avocado and tomatoes. But of course, the 33-year-old actress has that one thing she could never cut out. “Ketchup is the indulgence that I never give up. Ketchup on everything,” she said. Bosworth knows that although this diet is delicious, it’s a bit strict. And she revealed that she only eats this way 80 percent of the time. When she goes to Montana to spend time with her husband Michael Polish, it’s a totally different story. She’s drinking whiskey, chowing down on burgers, and cooking ragu in between riding horses and swimming. So you could say that her healthy living plan subscribes to the “all things in moderation” adage. And that’s her same philosophy when it comes to exercise. “I had a hard time with my exercise routine because I felt like it had to be an hour, and it had to be really rigorous and intense,” she said. “Then, I realized you can go down and get on the treadmill for 20 minutes, and you’ve done something.” And something is always better than nothing! [From Self] I have the same question I had about Olivia Munn’s 80/20 diet, how do you count that exactly? Do you just eat well 8 days out of 10 or is it only a rough estimate? In terms of burgers making you tired, on Saturday I actually had a burger for lunch and noticed that I got very sleepy afterwards. (I do eat burgers but only once every couple of weeks and for dinner, so my body wasn’t used to it.) I also can relate to pushing yourself too hard while exercising, just because I don’t feel like I accomplish anything if I don’t work hard for an hour or more. As one of my spin instructors says however, abs are made in the kitchen. It looks like Kate’s kitchen is very regimented. I hate this idea that you have to give up entire food groups to lose weight or keep it off though, it makes a lot of people think it’s impossible. photos credit: FameFlynet

Bethenny Frankel’s Botox doctor explains how he achieved her new look

Earlier this week, Bethenny Frankel admitted to getting Botox to reshape her jaw. It was refreshing to hear a celebrity own up to injectables, as so many try to fib and attribute their altered faces to skin care, diet or weight loss. (Looking at you, Olivia Munn.) Bethenny explained that her dermatologist told her that her jaw was too “tense” due to habitually grinding her teeth. She said “About three years ago, my dermatologist said to me, why don’t we try injecting your jaw because it’s so tense.” The result is that her face looks more filled out, her cheeks are less prominent and she does look “better.” Radar Online was able to get Bethenny’s dermatologist to speak about her procedures on the record, and he explained it as an aesthetic decision to bring her jaw more in proportion to the rest of her face. Botox doc — Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Howard Sobel — is exclusively telling all to RadarOnline.com about his client’s injections. “Botox can be injected in the Masseter muscle, right above the jawline. This is often done to correct the discomfort and tensions of TMJ, specifically what I did for Bethenny.” Dr. Sobel, the founder of DDF Skincare, explains to Radar. The professional admits the 45-year-old mom’s face has changed shape. “Bethenny’s jawline was very prominent and not in proportion to her cheeks,” he says, adding that he injected small amounts of Botox over a period of months to atrophy the muscle. “By shrinking the Masseter muscle down slowly, her cheeks became more prominent than the squareness of her jaw, resulting in a softer, more feminine look.” Dr. Sobel would not comment on any other services the outspoken star may have received. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Susan Evans— who has never treated the star— recently told Radar that she believes she has gotten cheek implants or fillers, in addition to a chin implant and eye lift. [From Radar Online] It doesn’t seem like Dr. Sobel really read Bethenny’s interview or he would have said something about her bruxism, but the end result is the same and she probably did get some relief from her tense muscles. It doesn’t sound like it was the reason he originally presented to her as she claimed, but whatever. I love how Radar adds another surgeon who speculates that Bethenny probably had a bunch of other things done too. In related news, Bethenny skewered Sonja Morgan on the last episode of Real Housewives of NY. Apparently Sonja has a prosecco brand called “Tipsy Girl” which enraged Bethenny for potentially capitalizing on the success of her alcohol and lifestyle brand, “Skinny Girl.” Bethenny had Sonja in tears as she said “When a brand rides on the coattails of another brand and kind of uses a similar name, they call it a cheater brand.” She then dismissed it by adding “You can’t affect my business at all. It doesn’t matter,” but told Sonja she wanted nothing to do with her at all. Bethenny has since penned a blog calling Sonja “sad,” bragging about her business ventures and claiming she welcomes competition. It doesn’t sound like it. These Real Housewives should go into business helping women decide what kind of Botox, fillers and plastic surgery to get. I just googled that, and plastic surgery advice coaches are a real thing. Obviously Bethenny couldn’t do this because you have to be good with people, but there’s definitely a call for it. Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images

Leah Messer: Daughter Losing Too Much Weight?

This season alone, fans have slammed Leah Messer a multitude of times for bad parenting. And we're feeling another strike coming on. In a preview clip for Teen Mom 2, Corey Simms brings up concerns about six-year-old Ali, the daughter he shares with Leah. Ali, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, is losing too much weight, Corey believes. "Next time we go to Columbus, if I can't go, you might want to mention about her diet," Corey tells Leah as she drops off their daughter. Leah appears perplexed. "Diet?" she asks, quizzically. "How she's not eating," Corey explains. "It takes everything I got to get her to eat." Leah tells her ex that Ali eats when she's with her, but Corey doesn't think it's sufficient. "She eats, but she doesn't eat enough," he says. "She's been not eating for a while." "We weighed her and now she's 34 pounds," he continues. "I think she's lost weight because she was almost 40 pounds." Leah looks concerned, confused and tired, then argues that she thinks Ali hasn't gained or lost weight, but is just staying the same. Still, she agrees to make a doctor's appointment for their daughter to appease Corey. Earlier this week, Leah was criticized for allowing her other daughter, Adalynn, to eat frosting straight out of the container. Back in March, she came under fire for failing to feed her kids breakfast before school. Is it possible Leah doesn't understand the concept of proper nourishment for children? Or is she really just the victim of unfair editing, like she has been asserting for the past few months? You be the judge:
