Leonardo DiCaprio Takes Private Jet to Accept Environmental Award

This week, Leonardo DiCaprio was bestowed with a prestigious award for his environmental activism by New York nonprofit Riverkeeper.

Awesome. Except that he arrived to the city via private jet.

Maybe not so awesome.

The actor was in France for the Cannes Film Festival when he jetted off to NYC, and then returned to the South of France the next day in another private jet.

Needless to say, many fans weren’t thrilled, because that’s a lot of gas for just one dude.

Nevertheless, DiCaprio’s rep explained that the Oscar-winner was due back in Cannes to speak at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala and had few options for transportation.

“He was asked to speak at both Riverkeeper and amfAR events, but the only way to attend the two fundraisers was to hitch a ride with flights that were already planned,” the rep told Us Weekly.

“Leo helped both events raise millions, donated his own funds, auctioned off his house and had speaking roles in both programs.”

Yeah, but still. The optics.

During the gala, DiCaprio auctioned off a stay at his Palm Springs home for $336,000, which benefitted the charity.

DiCaprio dedicated a good portion of his acceptance speech at the Academy Awards this year to the subject of climate change.

“Climate change is real. It is happening right now,” he told the audience. “It is the most urgent threat affecting our entire species.”

“We need to support leaders around the world… who speak for all of humanity… I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this award for granted.”

After the speech, he received a standing ovation and the adoration of environmentalists everywhere.

Is Garner competing with Affleck to see who can get the most publicity?

Jennifer Garner timed her Vanity Fair cover so that it came out on the Friday right before the Oscars. The last time she was at the Academy Awards was in 2014 when she was a presenter, and Affleck was her date. (That was the year following his 2013 win for Best Picture, for Argo.) This year she was a presenter again and she flew solo. So she wanted people to know about it, so she got some publicity ahead of the Oscars.

It’s also interesting to me that Garner’s publicity blitz for her Christian movie, Miracles from Heaven, out March 16th, comes as Affleck is furiously trying to promote Batman v. Superman, out March 25th. Warner Brothers is said to be running scared because Deadpool changed the entire superhero genre with an insanely successful dirty, funny R-Rated movie made on a $58 million budget. Batman v. Superman is an old school dark superhero movie that looks like it takes itself too seriously. It may also end up being the most expensive movie ever made. Just a few months ago we heard that the production budget was up to $410 million.

So there’s a lot riding on Batman v. Superman, including Affleck’s career. He wrote it after all. You get the sense that Garner is trying to steal his thunder, which I don’t blame her for. It’s clever, she’s not being openly disparaging of him despite the digs she got in during her interview and she’s getting her side of the story out there. Radar claims that Affleck’s team is livid about her VF interview because Garner confirmed that Affleck was with the nanny – even though she tried to soften the blow by saying they were separated at the time. They quote a source who claims Affleck and his team are “furious,” but that he “can’t do anything until after his movies come out.” He also has Live by Night slated for release, but Radar is wrong, it’s not out until 2017. So maybe that’s all conjecture, but it’s hard to see how Affleck’s people would sign off on Garner’s VF interview.

In the latest news about these two, Affleck has a contest through Omaze which offers a ride in the Batman to the film’s premiere to a random person who donates to his charity, The Eastern Congo Initiative. He visited Warner Brothers Studio tour and surprised fans with a ride in The Batmobile. You can see that video here, it was actually really cute. Meanwhile Vanity Fair has released a video of Jennifer Garner reading Go The F-k To Sleep in her saccharine sweet way. This book came out in 2011 and yet another celebrity reading it seems hackneyed. I really do get the impression that she’s competing with him now, and that she’s going to show him that she can fight back and come out of it smelling like roses.

Jessa Duggar has been begging for cash, gifts & gift certificate ‘donations’

Jessa Duggar has been begging for cash, gifts & gift certificate ‘donations’

Soon after the Duggar family imploded in an spectacular mess of child molestation, Ashley Madison accounts and affairs with p0rn stars, there were some random stories about how the Duggars were broke, or struggling for money somehow. They were apparently asking for donations and pleading with fans to buy their stuff, especially after TLC stopped airing 19 Kids & Counting. While I don’t doubt that it costs a lot to keep the S.S. Duggar afloat, I also believed that TLC paid the Duggars well enough, plus they have revenue streams from side-projects, likes books, speeches, etc. While Josh Duggar is persona non grata, the older kids still make some money, don’t they? Well, funny story. Jessa Duggar-Seewald is either so desperate for cash or desperate for attention that she’s giving out instructions on how “fans” can donate to her directly, with gift certificates and cash.

Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald have come under fire for encouraging fans to donate gift cards and money to the parents-to-be. In a post on the family’s blog — which has seemingly since been edited — the pregnant 22-year-old and her husband, 20, gave pretty specific instructions on how to send “donations” to the former 19 Kids and Counting stars, if they so desired.

According to The Ashley’s Reality Roundup, the since-deleted instructions read, “For readers who have asked about sending gift cards to the Seewalds, Jessa told us that her favorite stores are Target and Walmart.”

Additionally, they listed an address where fans could send cash directly, if they so desired.

Understandably, the request was met with some serious backlash in the comments section.

“Love the family, but I don’t think it’s right to give an address for gifts and gift cards,” one such fan wrote, per The Ashley’s Reality Roundup. “I may be wrong but TLC and their personal appearances [probably] pay them well…donate to a charity in their name.”

This comes shortly after Jessa’s older sister Jill came under fire and was accused of using fan donations — intended to fund her mission trip — to pay for a “family vacation.”

[From In Touch Weekly]

I would honestly love to know more about the finances of the Duggars. I would love to know if Jim-Bob and Michelle put money in trusts for all of their kids, considering their kids were “performers” on the TLC reality show. I would love to know if Jessa and Jill got extra money for their wedding specials. I would love to know if Jim-Bob withheld their “paychecks” if they didn’t do as he commanded. And yes, I would love to know how Jessa and Ben Seewald are supporting themselves. Jessa has no particular talent or skill set or education. She’s been angling for a reality show return for a few months now, and chica is REALLY thirsty. So, is she angling for a reality show and donations just because she wants attention, or because she and Ben are broke as hell? Or both?

PS… Late Thursday, TLC announced that they will be airing “two or more” specials just for Jessa and Jill’s journeys. One special will focus on Jessa’s pregnancy (and presumably the birth of her first child), and one special for Jill and Derick’s trip to Central America. I wonder how much Jill and Jessa are getting paid for these specials? I wonder if Jim-Bob gets a cut? I wonder if Jessa is doing separate negotiations with TLC for her own spinoff reality show? Chica really does not want to get a real job.

Danish Magazine Cover Issues Apology for Publishing Underweight Model

All the details from Daily Mail:

A magazine has been forced to apologise for using a ‘skeleton’-like model in its latest issue. The publisher of Danish magazine, Cover, Malene Malling called it a ‘sad day’ after online backlash and anger over the decision to feature Lululeika in a fashion feature. Malling said: ‘I have not lived up to my responsibility as a publisher, woman and mother and am truly sorry.’

The picture was originally posted on Reddit where many users rushed to comment on the appearance of the 16-year-old model whose full name is Lululeika Ravn Liep. One named ‘Lincolnparkafterdark,’ said: ‘I genuinely don’t understand how a look this emaciated can be considered beautiful or fashionable or sexy in any country/culture. This poor girl clearly needs help. It’s obvious she’s not healthy. It’s so detrimental to young girls around the world to glamorize eating disorders.’

After the apology was posted to the magazine’s Facebook many of their readers were still not happy. One woman commented: ‘[It is] Super easy for you to show all of them (us) who doubt the sincerity of your excuse that you really mean what you say. You donate simply last year’s profits to the Mental Health Foundation or the Association on Eating Disorders, so they can do something for all the girls daily battling anorexia !!!! [sic].’

The Danish Tax Minister Benny Englebrecht was one of many who took to Facebook and to voice his disgust at the image saying: ‘I seriously thought that the fashion industry had understood that anorexia is a problem that should be taken seriously.’

Angelina Jolie in grey Atelier Versace for ‘Unbroken’ photocall: stunning?

Angelina Jolie in grey Atelier Versace for ‘Unbroken’ photocall: stunning?

Following Monday night’s wildly successful and emotional Sydney premiere of Unbroken, Angelina Jolie and her cast stepped out today for a photocall and press conference to support the film. Angelina’s look here is Versace. It was custom-made just for her, because let’s face it… Donatella Versace worships Angelina. And while there are a few notable exceptions, Angelina is one of the few women who can really work a Versace dress properly. Her shoes are Louboutins – she’s been doing the nude shoes for a while now and I wish she would stop.

There was a lot of conversation on yesterday’s post about Angelina’s “thinness.” It pisses me off. She’s a slender woman. She always has been. I remember in her early 20s when people talked about her super-thin arms. Again, she’s ALWAYS been this thin naturally and it’s a struggle for her to put on weight and keep it on. She lost weight – and talked about it openly – after her mom died in 2007, and then she put on weight (obviously) when through her pregnancy in 2008. And she went through a double mastectomy last year, plus major reconstructive surgery. I don’t know, you guys? Maybe lay off her weight? She looks the same to me… I would even argue that she looks better/healthier these days than she did last year. *polishes Brangeloonie Badge*

During today’s press conference, Angelina joked about the Australian crew and the Aussie accent – go here to see. And here’s Angelina talking about how much she loves Brad Pitt. Aw.

Malala Yousafzai, 17, is the co-winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize

Malala Yousafzai, 17, is the co-winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize

Exactly a year ago, the Nobel Prize committee was just about to announce the winner of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. It was widely believed that Malala Yousafzai, then 16, would win. Malala had been – and still is – an outspoken advocate for girls’ education, not to mention the survivor of a horrific attempted murder by the Taliban (the Taliban still want to kill her, just FYI). Long story short, Malala didn’t win last year and people were pissed! So… Malala won the Peace Prize this year. Better late than never? Congrats, Malala!

Reaching across gulfs of age, gender, faith, nationality and even international celebrity, the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday awarded the 2014 peace prize to Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan and Kailash Satyarthi of India, joining a teenage Pakistani known around the world with an Indian veteran of campaigns on behalf of children. At age 17, Ms. Yousafzai is the youngest recipient of the $1.1 million prize since it was created in 1901. Mr. Satyarthi is 60.

The awards, announced in Oslo by Thorbjorn Jagland, the committee’s chairman, were in acknowledgment of their work in helping to promote universal schooling and in protecting children worldwide from abuse and exploitation, particularly young laborers in India on whose behalf Mr. Satyarthi has campaigned for decades.

Pointedly, Mr. Jagland said, “The Nobel Committee regards it as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism.”

“Children must go to school and not be financially exploited,” Mr. Jagland said. “It is a prerequisite for peaceful global development that the rights of children and young people be respected. In conflict-ridden areas in particular, the violation of children leads to the continuation of violence from generation to generation. Showing great personal courage, Kailash Satyarthi, maintaining Gandhi’s tradition, has headed various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain. He has also contributed to the development of important international conventions on children’s rights.”

Despite his works, Mr. Satyarthi is not nearly so widely known as Ms. Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012 for her campaigning on behalf of girls’ education in the Swat Valley of Pakistan. She was 15 at the time. Since then she has become a global emblem of her struggle, celebrated on television and publishing a memoir.

She “has already fought for several years for the right of girls to education and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations,” Mr. Jagland said. “This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. Through her heroic struggle, she has become a leading spokesperson for girls’ rights to education.”

[From The NY Times]

You can read more about Malala’s work and Mr. Satyarthi’s work at the New York Times link. I do think it’s interesting that they made a Hindu and a Muslim co-winners for work in education advocacy. I’m not sure what it means or anything, but I’m just happy that Malala won. She’s definitely worthy. Her eloquence, passion and commitment to nonviolence bring grown men to tears. Even Jon Stewart wanted to adopt her!

Tom Hiddleston posts #WakeUpCall selfie for charity: sexy or not so much?

Tom Hiddleston posts #WakeUpCall selfie for charity: sexy or not so much?

This is what Tom Hiddleston looks like when he wakes up. Are you into it? I’m kind of into it. I like some scruff on a man and I’ve always thought Hiddles in particular looked better with some kind of facial hair. His morning hair looks amazing/terrible too. So spiky, with no rhyme or reason. I don’t really believe he sleeps in a hoodie though.

So, why did Tommy post this just-woke-up selfie? It’s because of a new social media campaign called #WakeUpCall. #WakeUpCall supports UNICEF and Tommy is a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. This campaign is sort of like the “no makeup selfie,” only people are encouraged to not only go makeup-free, but take the selfie as soon as they wake up. People are encouraged to donate to UNICEF’s Syria Emergency Fund as well as post the #WakeUpCall selfies. Oh, and they get to nominate people too – Tommy nominated Emma Watson (shortly after he supported her UN HeForShe campaign with a selfie too), Keeley Hawes and Josie Rourke (the artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse).

So it’s all for charity and good for Hiddles. He’s a good UNICEF ambassador but he’s been working so much this year, he probably hasn’t had time to make any trips on behalf of UNICEF. But selfies are good too. Maybe the next viral campaign can be #MorningWood… for, like, Rain Forest Awareness. I want to see Hiddles participate in that.

Final thought: IS THAT HIS HEADBOARD?!
