Melissa on her Seven7 collection that carries sizes for all: The fun of it is you should be able to put these things together and not have to make a choice about going out to dinner or getting the sweater. Wear the sweater to dinner! Earlier this year, Melissa shared some details about her 50 pounds weight loss: I actually am a size 14. No trick, nothing to tell, just super boring life. You bring it real down, you don’t do anything fun and you go to bed at 7:30 — that’s the trick. (My) husband will ask, “Is it five and are you in jammies?” “I’m gonna call them loungewear. ‘Ghostbusters’ opened at the box office with $46 million: did you love it or hate it?

I was looking forward to seeing the lady-version of Ghostbusters, mostly because I love the combo of Melissa McCarthy + director Paul Feig, and I think Kate McKinnon is one of the funniest people working today. I went to see it on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and about half-way through the film, I realized that it really wasn’t that funny. Ghostbusters has some giggle-worthy lines and some charm and McKinnon in particular was really trying her damnedest to bring some lightness and quirk to the movie, but even the combined talents of these funny women couldn’t save a clunky script. Those were the biggest issues: pacing, and a script that needed a few more rewrites. They spent too much time earnestly building the world of the “modern” Ghostbusters and there were so many opportunities for some tongue-in-cheek cultural references, anything to shorthand the process and move along the action, but it just didn’t happen. Which isn’t to say that I think it’s a bad movie. It’s not, and if you’re in the mood for something light and silly, I would recommend it. It’s harmless and there are some funny lines and good moments. I feel like Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy’s comedic talents were oddly underutilized as they both tried to play the straight-man to varying degrees. Leslie Jones’ Patty was brought into the story too late (pacing issues, I’m telling you). Chris Hemsworth’s character was the victim of messy writing too, and it felt like they couldn’t decide how stupid they wanted him to be, so his level of intelligence kept changing scene-to-scene. I’m well aware that there is a Battle of the Sexes happening around this film and around the reviews of the film. I was prepared to go to war and rip apart the misogynistic criticism of the film. But after seeing it, the most feminist thing I can say is that the leading ladies were trying and the film’s flaws are not their fault. The fault lies with Paul Feig and Katie Dippold, the co-writers of the clunky script. As for the box office, Sony predicted that it would make between $40-50 million opening weekend, and it performed as expected. Early reports on Sunday put the figure at something like $46 million. It came in second behind The Secret Life of Pets, which… let’s face it, is a massive, crowd-pleasing family film. The problem was that Ghostbusters was TOO scary for really little kids and not funny enough to have box office longevity. It cost $144 million to make Ghostbusters, and I’m sure that the film will break even and likely make the studio some money. But as many analysts pointed out, that might not be good enough. Ghostbusters didn’t need to perform at expectations, it needed to exceed expectations to be considered a “success.” You can read more analysis here. Photos courtesy of ‘Ghostbusters’.

Melissa McCarthy Has a Message for Body Shamers

Melissa McCarthy recently showed off a 50-pound weight loss, but truth be told, she doesn’t really want to talk about it. “If that is the most interesting thing about me, I need to go have a lavender farm in Minnesota and give this up,” she told Refinery29. “There are so many more intriguing things about women than their butt or their this or their that. It can’t be the first question every time, or a question at all.” Regrettably, women today are still being scrutinized for their weight, and today, the actress took to Instagram to vent her frustration. She posted an image of a sign stuck to a mirror that reads, “WARNING: Reflections in this mirror may be distorted by socially constructed ideas of ‘beauty.'” Well said.  In the caption, she included her own poignant message: “We have to stop categorizing and judging women based on their bodies. We are teaching young girls to strive for unattainable perfection instead of feeling healthy and happy in their own skin. ‘Imagine we are linked not ranked.’ Gloria Steinem” Looks like she’s ready to start a conversation, or more likely, end the one that’s been going on for far too long.  The star is tired of women being valued solely for their bodies when they have so much more to offer. “We’re always being ranked and when we come together, you know, women are amazing together,” she said in a recent interview. “Women are friends. Women are not really competing with each other. I think everyone wants to make it seem that way with who wore it better, whose butt is better, whose glasses are crazier. I’ve never had any of those conversations in my life.” For the record, we are fans of everything Melissa has to offer, whether she’s cracking us up in film and TV, designing a fashion line or demonstrating her newfound skill: straight up killing it in a lip sync battle. Melissa McCarthy on her weight loss: ‘No trick, just super boring life’

Melissa McCarthy is promoting her new movie The Boss, which opens April 8. As I have mentioned, I am a big fan of Melissa since falling in love with her on Gilmore Girls. Of her movies, however, Spy is just about the only one I enjoyed. I am cautiously optimistic about The Boss though. If the trailers are to be believed, her character, Michelle Darnell, is a competent businessperson and the joke has nothing to do with weight. Her character Sookie’s weight on Gilmore Girls was never a joke; it wasn’t until she went mainstream Hollywood that her weight was brought front and center. Now that Melissa has lost 50 pounds (brava to her) her weight is an even bigger focus and everyone wants to know her secret. According to Melissa, the secret isn’t that sexy: Actress Melissa McCarthy channels a foul-mouthed, over-the-top Martha Stewart caricature in her new movie “The Boss,” but it is her personal transformation that has everyone talking. The 45-year-old actress looked incredible at a press junket for the film. She lost a reported 50 pounds, and revealed there is no big secret to her weight loss. She told “Extra’s” Charissa Thompson it is actually her lifestyle that contributed to the change. “No trick, nothing to tell, just super boring life. You bring it real down, you don’t do anything fun and you go to bed at 7:30 — that’s the trick.” She went on to say her husband, Ben Falcone, will ask, “Is it five and are you in jammies?” to which she responds, “I’m gonna call them loungewear.” [From Extra TV] Melissa is accepting compliments graciously but shies away from any real weight-loss discussion. I can appreciate her position as she has often emphasized that weight doesn’t really matter to her. She told Rolling Stone, in 2014, “I could eat healthier, I could drink less. I should be learning another language and working out more, but I’m just always saying, ‘Ah, I could get hit by a bus tomorrow.” I get the sense that she does not want to be another celebrity who loses weight and all of a sudden the only thing that matters is weight loss. Melissa is wearing her Seven7 clothing line during this press junket. I really liked a few pieces from her Holiday Line, but I think she does bottoms better than tops. The line is doing well, however, and Melissa continues to put emphasis on it being an all-inclusive line, joining the voices wishing to dismiss “plus-size” as a descriptor.
