Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary covers Vogue Australia: stunning or blah?

I’ll admit it: I’ve never paid much attention to Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary. There are dedicated royal-watchers who enjoy all of the royal houses, but I generally limit myself to the Windsors, Bernadottes and Grimaldis. Crown Princess Mary is the Australian woman who married Crown Prince Frederick in 2004, after a three-year courtship and one-year-long engagement. They met in a pub in Sydney, Australia in 2000 and love blossomed. Mary is actually accomplished, and she worked at real jobs before and during their courtship. She’s often compared to the Duchess of Cambridge because of the whole “commoner marrying a prince” thing, but in side-by-side comparisons, Mary does seem like a better/cooler/more accomplished person. Anyway, Mary and Frederick cover the August issue of Vogue Australia. Mary is sort of a hero (the Duchess Kate of Australia, if you will) in her home country, so it makes sense that they would do an exclusive photoshoot for Australian Vogue. The photoshoot was done by Mario Testino, and Mary and Frederick even included their four kids in one of the photos. They are parents to Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Vincent and Josephine. Here are some highlights from Mary’s interview: Whether she considers herself a role model: “I always find it difficult to speak of myself as a role model, you know, because I think it is other people and their impression of you that makes a role model. It’s not something I consciously think about but at the same time I am very aware of my role and my responsibility.” Her work with the conditions within the fashion industry: “It will take time to create real and sustainable change. If we are talking about the textile and fashion industry, it is one of the most female-dominated industries in the world and yet many of these working women are voiceless. I do use the platform I have built up over the years as a vocal and passionate voice for the empowerment of women and girls and the protection and respect of their human rights to bring attention to this.” Her foundation deals with issues of domestic violence, bullying and loneliness: “One thing I have always found difficult from as early as I can remember is seeing people who appear to be alone. It has always affected me deeply and I can’t explain why. To see people standing on the outside looking in, who can’t understand why they aren’t part of a community or group. We all have this innate fear of not belonging… We all have a right to belong. The abused woman, the bullied child, and the lonely adolescent feel very, very lonely in the world with their problems and will often never share them.” [From The Daily Mail] I think it’s difficult to make “loneliness” a cause, specifically a royal cause. Lots of people are alone, and lots of people are lonely, but she’s conflating those two things and making it seem like everyone who is alone is pitiable and sad. While “loneliness” is good subject to raise and de-stigmatize, what work is there to be done realistically? As for the rest of it, she sounds absolutely fine. It would be fascinating to see the Duchess of Cambridge do an interview like this at one point, but it won’t happen. Photos courtesy of Mario Testino for Vogue Australia.

Stacey Dash: Jesse Williams is a ‘perfect example of a Hollywood plantation slave’

Just know, I was looking to avoid covering this, but it’s the Friday before a long holiday weekend and there isn’t much else going on. I’d actually like some commenter-thoughts on this one: in the future, is it smarter to simply avoid Stacey Dash stories completely, no matter how hard she’s trolling? Or should we cover those stories because we need to say (repeatedly) that Stacey Dash is a terrible person filled with terrible ideas? The BET Awards were held last Sunday, and one of the best moments from the show was Jesse Williams receiving an award for his humanitarian work, and his work with Black Lives Matter and the Advancement Project. Here’s his speech again: @iJesseWilliams full speech. P R E A C H!!!https://t.co/CESmMrtmWA — 100% (@goafgang) June 27, 2016 It was a powerful speech that touched on many issues, from police brutality to the exclusion of black women from the narrative of civil rights movements, from savage inequalities in education to the systemic appropriation of black art and talent. Many were moved to tears by Williams. But not Stacey Dash, master troll and Fox News idiot. Dash got on her Patheos blog to complain about Jesse’s speech and insult him for daring to be a black man at an awards show recognizing diversity in the arts and making a speech about the racial problems we still have in this country. How dare he, right? Here’s part of what Dash wrote (I’m leaving her typos): You’ve just seen the perfect example of a HOLLYWOOD plantation slave! Sorry, Mr Williams. But the fact that you were standing on that stage at THOSE awards tells people you really don’t know what your talking about. Just spewing hate and anger. Because you my man are just like everyone else hustling to get money. But your cognitive dissidents has you getting it from THAT BYSTANDER whom YOU DONT NEED. Yes. BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION is WHITE OWNED. GET over yourself and get on with it! That chip on the shoulders of people like you will weigh you down and keep you from flying free. But true freedom is never free. You have to know how to fly. If anyone is making you feel this way its you. Living in a psychological prison of your own making. If anyone is GHETTO-IZING anyone, it’s people like you letting the BETs and other media outlets portray us in stereotypes. [From Dash’s Patheos blog] A few points. You’re not your. Cognitive dissonance not cognitive dissidents. As for the rest of it… I don’t even want to waste my energy trying to figure out the pretzel of logic she uses to claim that Jesse William is the one ghettoizing people and stereotyping people. How is Jesse Williams a “plantation slave” for working with black activists and making a speech about how much work is left to be done? Who can tell anymore? A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Snooki & JWoww: Return To The Jersey Shore House… With Their Kids!

Snooki and JWoww have come a long way from their alcohol fueled drama in the Jersey Shore house.  For six seasons, we witnessed their ups and downs and it made for some of the best reality TV scenes ever. There was no reality show on the air quite like it, but by the time the final season rolled around, it was pretty stale.  It probably didn’t help matters that Snooki was pregnant with her first child. This changed the dynamic of the show. Snooki changed from an immature young woman into a very strong woman with a family in mind.  No one was surprised when it was announced that Jersey Shore was coming to an end in 2012. There’s only so many times you can watch the same group of people get drunk and make fun of themselves.  Snooki & JWoww’s spin-off lasted  for four seasons and it chronicled the two best friends as they navigated a more mature lifestyle.  Snooki & JWoww recently took a trip to the Jersey Shore house where it all began, but they took their kids with them.  That’s wrong on so many levels. Remember the smoosh room? Let’s hope that room has been steam cleaned.  That was the go-to place when people in the house wanted to indulge in some sexual activity, so we can only imagine the horrors that could be hiding in there.  View Slideshow: 15 Stars Whose 15 Minutes of Fame Are Already Up JWoww’s husband, Roger took to his wife’s blog to speak about their experience and made it clear that he wasn’t fond of the kids going to the house.  “For reasons unknown my wife and Nicole took our kids to the Jersey Shore house today and let them pose for a photo op in the “Smoosh Room” or as I like to call it the DNA Daycare,” Roger revealed on the blog.  It seems like Roger has finally found a sense of humor. Remember he would fly off the handle at JWoww whenever she tried to have a joke with him? Roger closed off his post with more hilarious comments about it all. “I’m in a full Haz Mat suit now waiting in the driveway to power wash my kids off and scrub them down with bleach when they get home. Child protective services will be waiting for you as well @jwoww.” “Our daughter’s face says it all.” What do you think of it all? Should the kids have visited the house? Hit the comments below! Tony Robbins Fans Walk on Hot Coals, Unsurprisingly Get Burned

For years, motivational speaker Tony Robbins has made a killing by telling followers to "Unleash the Power Within," but they're really burned up over his teachings now. Like, literally. The author and self-help guru reportedly had fans walk over a blanket of hot coals during a seminar in Dallas, encouraging them to, ya know, conquer their fears. To the surprise of no sane individual, more than 30 participants were treated for burns to their feet and legs, with five requiring hospitalization. I'm certain there are far safer fear-conquering activities that could've worked just as well, but nothing brings out your inner carnie like hot coal-stepping. Amazingly, Robbins' people have defended the coal walk, claiming that more than 7,000 people performed the feat but only five had to be rushed to the hospital. Call me crazy, but I think that's five too many. "I know it might not look that way, but this was actually another successful fire walk," Robbins' head trainer Chad Schinke told reporters. "We had over 7,000 people that walked across the hot coals and we always have a few people that have some discomfort afterwards," he added. "Discomfort" he calls it. Dude. "We do our best to take care of them and ensure that they get whatever help that they feel like they need." "Help that they feel like they need?" This guy's a tool. Funnily enough, with every cult there are always folks drunk on Kool-Aid who refuse to fault the ringleader. "I'm just shocked, I'm out of words," said one participant. "I've never seen this in all of my events and I have to just say it has nothing to do with the training." "It has absolutely nothing to do with Tony Robbins," she added. YES IT DOES, LADY. Do we have to point out the obvious? It was his event, he suggested the ridiculous exercise and he surely knew of the dangers because even my frigging cat knows better than to do something so asinine. The god complex, people. It's a scary, scary thing.

Olivia Wilde: ‘Girls don’t get dressed up for guys; we get dressed up for girls’

Olivia Wilde recently shared some of her beauty secrets with People magazine and I can only hope if I follow them I will look as radiant as she does. Olivia used the interview to do a little shilling for Revlon, for which she is a spokesperson, but she does offer some pretty helpful tips. She says that Jason “doesn’t love it” when she wears red lipstick to channel her inner Sophia Loren, but I’m sure he can look past that. It’s like a tiny scratch on a Bentley. Here are some highlights from the interview: On men and makeup: “All men are terrified of lipstick. But girls don’t get dressed up for guys; we get dressed up for girls. So I wear whatever I think looks best.” On her beauty inspiration: “I like to be bold on the red carpet, and the benefit of working with so many brilliant makeup artists is that I get to ask a lot of questions and say, ‘okay so when I go out next week to that birthday party I am going to try my own version of this with my own tools.’” On her day-to-day look: “I don’t leave the house without a little foundation, concealer and mascara [on]. I think that for a lot of women it’s not about disguising yourself, it’s just about giving yourself a little bump in confidence.” On the power of makeup: “The older I get, the more I get to know what works best for me. Makeup is not about changing who you are, it’s about understanding your face and highlighting your best features.” [From People] I love Olivia, but I have to disagree on a few things. I did an informal poll of my Facebook friends and random Tinder connections and not one man told me he was “terrified” of lipstick. Maybe Jason had some sort of traumatic experience with lipstick as a child. Also, the only woman I get dressed up for is myself. I have also been known to get dolled up to woo the opposite sex, so I think she may be barking up the wrong tree. She is right about using makeup to highlight your best features. She’s obviously a pro at that. Sadly, it was announced on Wednesday that Olivia’s HBO series, Vinyl, was cancelled after only one season. The show, which followed the ups and (mostly) downs of a rock ’n’ roll record label in the 1970s was produced by Martin Scorcese and Mick Jagger, and I thought it was pretty good. And, of course, there’s all kinds of unresolved storylines, damn it. I hope Mick’s son, James, who played a punk singer, shows up somewhere soon. He’s a hottie. I hope Olivia’s merkin stylist can get another gig somewhere as well. Olivia took the news in stride, using Twitter to thank fans for their support. She tweeted, “Thanks for all the kind words about Vinyl, my friends. We had a BLAST, and made something special. Party on.” Thanks for all the kind words about Vinyl, my friends. We had a BLAST, and made something special. Party on. ❤️ — olivia wilde (@oliviawilde) June 23, 2016 Don’t worry about Olivia though, she’s keeping busy. She recently made her directorial debut, helming the video for the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s new song Dark Necessities. Too bad she couldn’t talk Anthony Kiedis out of rocking his “Sonny Bono 2016” look. That boy needs a makeover. Photo small: Getty Images, WENN.com, Fame Flynet

Disney CEO Bob Iger is ‘not worried about’ Johnny Depp’s personal problems

Bob Iger is the CEO of Disney. Which means he’s getting a lot of the credit for the “success stories” in Hollywood these days. Disney owns LucasFilm, Marvel and Pixar, arguably the most successful properties in the film industry, domestically and internationally. So it’s no surprise that Iger was named The Hollywood Reporter’s Most Powerful Person In Entertainment. You can see THR’s Hollywood 100 list here. It includes people like Leo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jimmy Fallon and Lin-Manuel Miranda. My intention was just to glance through Iger’s extensive interview, but I ended up being drawn in and I read the whole piece. Iger talks a lot about Marvel, Rogue One, Shanghai Disney, the Orlando massacre and more. He says Rogue One is “actually going to be a fine film” and that Disney is truly working on another Indiana Jones movie. But here’s something that might interest you at a gossip level: Iger was asked directly about Johnny Depp. THR: Do you have Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean in the park? Iger: Yes. And Johnny Depp’s personal problems? Not worried about it. The scandal will pass? I don’t know whether it passes or not. We have Jack Sparrow. You think people separate. Right. [From THR] And that’s it. That’s the only thing he says about Depp. I give Iger some credit for not slamming Amber and for not giving Depp some ringing character reference or endorsement. But I do think Iger is kidding himself if he thinks the public will be able to separate Jack Sparrow and a drunk, abusive scarf monster. Also: this interview took place several weeks ago, during the heat of the Depp-Heard back-and-forth in the press. It also took place after Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass bombed at the box office. Disney has a lot of money invested in Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean, and while Disney will still be okay if Pirates bombs (they still have Stars Wars and Marvel, after all), Disney doesn’t want to eat the $320 million it cost to make POTC: Dead Men Tell No Tales. And that’s just the production cost! It will cost Disney tens of millions to promote the film. Iger is counting on the idea that by the time the film comes out (next summer), people will have forgotten all about everything. Is that what will happen though? Ruby Rose had just performed at Pulse nightclub: ‘nothing I can do but cry’

As most of you unfortunately know by now, a man whose name I will not dignify by writing walked into the Orlando nightclub Pulse early Sunday morning and committed a heinous act, the worst mass shooting in US history. Among those for whom this hit far too close to home was actor and DJ Ruby Rose. Ruby is a strong voice and advocate for the LGBTQ community and had just recently done a gig at Pulse. Ruby Rose has shared an emotional social media post after the horrific Orlando mass shooting, revealing she performed in the city where 50 people were slain only last week. “Woke up in tears to hear the news about Orlando. Devastated, heartbroken, sick,” the Aussie actor and DJ posted on Facebook and Instagram. “I played there last Friday and last night I performed after Pride in LA. From the DJ booth you see laughter, love, dancing freedom and beautiful people living their lives not harming anyone. It’s one of the beautiful things to see from stage.” “This horrific tragedy has me on my knees at the mercy of a greater power to ask the simple question of ‘When will this end’ … I’m praying for Orlando, I’m crying for Orlando and I am there with you in spirit sending my love and strength.” [From Page Six] I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like for Ruby to have been in that location, celebrating one day and waking up to find out that about a week later 50 lives were taken there. I had a loose connection to the UCLA shooting earlier this month and the chill of having proximity to tragedy is hard to shake. The heartbreak from this tragic event is far reaching. J.K. Rowling posted the following to her Twitter Sunday to honor one of the victims, Luis Vielma. Luis worked on the Harry Potter ride at Universal Studios in Orlando: Luis Vielma worked on the Harry Potter ride at Universal. He was 22 years old. I have a friend at Disneyland, Anaheim and all cast members are devastated. Even if they had not met their East Coast counterparts, there is a real sense of family among the parks. I absolutely believe J.K. feels Luis’ loss personally. You can see a couple of general tributes posted by the cast members here and here. The Daily Beast has profiles and photos of many of the young people whose lives were cut tragically short. I don’t know how to close this post with the proper respect. Please know my heart goes out to anyone and all affected by this.
