Ingrid Seward: William & Kate are ‘a rich, increasingly spoiled couple’

Ingrid Seward is a prominent royal writer, biographer and editor in the UK. She’s often called in by American publications to explain royal traditions or provide sugary quotes about the greatness of the Queen, the Prince of Wales or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Like, People Magazine interviews her all the time and often throws in some of her quotes in pieces about the Cambridges. She’s known as a more conservative and pro-monarchy royal writer. So this is sort of amazing – Ingrid Seward wrote a column in the Mail on Sunday about the Cambridges’ janky media strategy and just what a boneheaded idea it was for Kate to skip out on the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day. If even Seward feels bold enough to issue a public smackdown, you know there are issues. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights: Missing out on the Irish Guards ceremony on St. Patrick’s Day: “So unthinking were her advisers in Kensington Palace that when a row about her absence erupted they replied that she’d simply gone home to Norfolk to be with her children. For Kate to miss an opportunity to honour the Armed Forces with such a lame excuse shows a distinct lack of understanding. If she wants to be thought of as a modern princess who will go the extra mile for the brave soldiers she represents through her charities, she should have been there at their new barracks at Hounslow, not at home in Anmer Hall. It somehow made the covenant between Royals and the military look as if it didn’t matter.” Seward blames bad advisors: “The Duchess’s advisers should have stopped to think how pitiful an excuse it looked to soldiers who have been divided from their families for months on operational tours since British Forces became engaged in the War on Terror in 2003. But they clearly did not. Sadly, for William and Kate, who could do no wrong at the time of their marriage in April 2011, it’s another unnecessary mistake.” William gets slammed too: “Last month the Duke failed to show up at the Baftas for the second year running. He is the Academy’s president, so it’s as if the cream of British cinema and a clutch of Hollywood A-listers had been stood up by their host. Again….Prince William said recently that the growing criticism of himself and his wife ‘came with the territory’. But it doesn’t have to. If he did not appear to be chafing quite so much at his Royal responsibilities and was more accepting of the affection on offer from the millions who will one day be his subjects, he could be forgiven a lot.” Instead of being friendly to British media, William is courting foreign media: “Prince William seems to be impervious to this idea. Instead he has begun to groom foreign media who give him the same platitudinous message that they give various celebrities. While holding the British press at arm’s length, the younger members of the Royal Family are giving cuddly, banal interviews to favoured publications and American TV networks.” Surrounded by privilege: “When William and Kate first married they insisted they didn’t want to be hidden in the ivory tower of royalty. They wanted to be with the people doing what they did, not surrounded by riches and privilege. Now they are doing just that. Of course they will one day be anointed King and Queen, and they will need their people behind them. Courting favour overseas won’t work and nor will ignoring public opinion at home.” The spoiled couple: “They may have been thrilled by their own cleverness at having a secret four-day ski break in Courchevel earlier this month but where they see an entitlement to privacy, the public see a rich, increasingly spoiled couple growing surprisingly distant.” [From The Daily Mail] The rest of Seward’s piece is a comparison of the Cambridges to the older royals, with Seward even saying that the Duchess of Cornwall understands the royal role so much better than William and Kate. Charles gets compliments as well for always putting duty first, for working so hard, etc. As I said, if someone like Seward is throwing down some heavy criticism of William and Kate, you know it’s bad. You know what I’m starting to wonder? I’m quietly developing a theory that all of this criticism might work in William’s favor in one particular way – he’ll use this as an excuse to quit his part-time EAAA job, which clearly already bores him to tears. He’ll say he has to quit the EAAA because something something criticism and his royal role. Then he’ll be on to a new scheme to avoid royal work. Oh, and the Sunday Express ran an interesting piece about Kate skipping out on the Irish Guards too – go here to read. Apparently, Kensington Palace is now claiming that they informed the Irish Guards “months” ago that Kate would not be handing out shamrocks this year. And somehow she knew months ago that she would need that day to prioritize her children? It’s a weird explanation. Photos courtesy of Fame/Flynet and WENN.

Beatrice Casiraghi wore Giambattista Valli to the Rose Ball: amazing or tragic?

The Grimaldis celebrated one of their biggest annual events over the weekend. Every year, Prince Albert hosts the Rose Ball, a huge fundraiser for the Princess Grace Foundation, one of the Grimaldis’ big charitable organizations. The Rose Ball is a huge deal. So is it weird that Princess Charlene didn’t come out for it? I’ve been saying that Charlene and Albert seem a lot stronger now that they’ve got an heir and a spare (Gabrielle and Jacques), but it also feels like Charlene skips out on a lot of stuff now that she’s got the babies as an excuse to not be around. So, at this year’s Rose Ball, Albert’s sister Princess Caroline acted as hostess, and her children came out. Andrea and his wife Tatiana were there, as were the rest of her kids: Pierre Casiraghi and his new wife Beatrice, Charlotte Casiraghi (who was also missing her partner, Gad), and Princess Alexandra of Hanover, who is Caroline’s youngest child, the only child Caroline had with Ernst August of Hanover. Caroline and Ernst are pretty much separated full time – I don’t think he’s ever in Monaco, and he seems to live with a succession of mistresses all around the world. Just FYI. As for the fashion, Caroline, Charlotte and Alexandra all wore Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld is particularly close to the Grimaldis, and he often dresses the royal women. I personally like that Charlotte went with a caped pantsuit, it looks daring and modern on her, although the silk satin is slightly budget for Chanel. The big show-stopped look came from Beatrice Casiraghi, who married Pierre last summer in a lavish, multi-nation extravaganza. Beatrice is Italian, so she chose to wear an Italian designer: Giambattista Valli. Her gown with big, frothy and red. I actually like the big-ball-gown look, and my only real qualm is that with all of that old-money and glamour, her wispy bangs still look kind of awful. Photos courtesy of Pacific Coast News.

Jessica Chastain in Elie Saab at the Spirit Awards: pretty or ill-fitting?

Jessica Chastain presented Best Male Lead at last night’s Spirit Awards (that went to Abraham Attah of Beasts of No Nation!) and she’s actually the “honorary chair of film independent.” I googled it because I do research like that, and I still don’t know what it means exactly. She’s been nominated twice before but hasn’t won, so maybe that’s why they wanted to recognize her. Chastain hasn’t won an Oscar yet either, and I feel like that she’ll get one in the next few years. I really hope so. You can see a complete list of winners here and YouTube has clips from the ceremony. Anyway Chastain wore this purple lace Elie Saab gown which highlights the issue she’s had on so many red carpets past – her boobs aren’t supported. You may think I’m joking, but I’m really not. It’s an otherwise very pretty dress and I like the color. Plus her styling is gorgeous. I want to do my hair like that now. Marisa Tomei was in this twee white and floral embroidered Stella McCartney gown. It’s the Spirit Awards and this could have been a great dress if it was tailored for her properly but it just hangs there like a sack. I do like the idea of the dress though. Juno Temple (Far from the Madding Crowd, Black Mass) was in Valentino which is SO overworked for the Spirit Awards. Tone it down a notch lady. Something nice: her hair is awesome and her makeup is super cute. I had hair like this in the 90s and I like that it’s making a comeback. Also, the birds on the bodice are cool. With a shorter, plainer skirt this might have worked. This did not need the blue lace on the skirt or down the sleeves. Nikki Reed was in an Etro gown which I can’t decide if I like. The front looks like a bib or apron. I really like the contemporary detailing around the bust but it looks weird paired with that kind of 70s baroque print. It’s like two different personalities crammed together in one dress. Her styling is gorgeous though. Lauren Cohan is giving me #abgoals in this Alice & Olivia white wrap crop top paired with high waisted blush colored Eloise pants. I’m just not feeling this look, it’s another case of two things which do not go together. She brightens it up with her expression though. Just try to imagine Rooney Mara in this. This makes me bummed that I have to wait to watch Walking Dead until after we’re done with Oscar coverage Monday. There are worse things than having to wait an extra day to watch a show you get to talk about for your job. photo credit: WENN and FameFlynet

Jennifer Lawrence: ‘The most damaging term we have’ is ‘post-feminist era’

Embed from Getty Images Here are some photos of Jennifer Lawrence at two pre-Oscar events in the past two days. As I keep saying, J-Law has been really good about not oversaturating the media with photos and interviews in the past few months. She was everywhere last year, and after she got her fourth Oscar nomination, she proceeded to not campaign for it at all. But she’s still J-Law, and she’s still the biggest star of her generation, and she’s still one of the biggest deals in Hollywood, so that’s why she came out for some events for Oscar weekend. First, the fashion. For last night’s Women In Film pre-Oscar cocktail party, Jennifer wore this absolutely awful Dior ensemble – the white jacket over what looks like an enlarged black fishnet dress. This should totally be considered a preview of things to come, because I’m sure she’s contractually obligated to wear Dior at the Oscars. And it might be bad. I think Dior is making gowns especially for J-Law, so maybe it won’t be THIS bad. I’m also including photos of Jennifer at that Dinner for Equality event two nights ago. She decided to forgo the Dior and went with Naeem Khan velvet pants and an embellished top. I would have enjoyed this more if the embellished top was a full-on dress. At the Dinner for Equality event, J-Law made some prepared remarks around pay equality (the event was co-hosted by Patricia Arquette, whose comments you can read here). J-Law said, in part: “It’s weird being a public figure talking about all of this stuff because you put a target on your nose. When I wrote that essay I got a lot of support but I also have a Republican family in Kentucky who told me my career was effectively over.” Lawrence said it’s vital to shed the notion that we live in a post-feminist era. “I don’t know who came up with that term, but it’s the most damaging term that we have, because it’s just not true.” [Via Variety] For what it’s worth, the Dinner for Equality event seemed like a very substantive discussion. At the Dinner for Equality event, they had feminist male allies from major studios talking about the importance on internal audits within studios to insure that women are being paid fairly and equally to their male counterparts. J-Law also said some words at the WIF event about pay equality: Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images Embed from Getty Images Photos courtesy of Getty.

Alicia Silverstone in Christian Siriano at Women in Film: lovely or weird?

These are more photos from the Women in Film event (Kaiser covered the other attendees here), which was held last night in LA. They were calling for diversity in film and wage equality for women, as they do annually at this event. It was hosted by the Women in Film president, producer Cathy Schulman (Crash.) I’ll just be covering some of the more questionably dressed women. First off is Alicia Silverstone, who is 39 years old but somehow manages to look 20-something. This scoop neck spaghetti strap bronze metallic Christian Siriano dress is making her look much younger too. This is a very young-looking dress, I think it’s the simple empire cut, but her styling is perfection. Here’s Kate Walsh in a simple v-neck black dress that somehow manages to look like a power suit. That dress is cool, I would wear that, and I like the skinny belt but she paired it with fishnet stockings and high boots. When you look at her makeup though – what was she thinking? She’s got like bright purple eyeshadow on both her lids and under her eyes with thick heavy eyeliner, too much mascara and pink lips. If a makeup artist did this to me I would wipe it off and redo it myself. She looked much better the day before at the Cadillac pre-Oscar party in a contemporary wrap dress. Patricia Arquette was in a plain black and white combo with a white blouse under a half sleeve jacket with a tea length skirt. This look is just too boxy for my taste. She would look better with a fitted jacket and some tailoring. Lake Bell was in a very bizarre fishnet shirt with a bandeau bra underneath for modesty. She has on skintight pinstripe pants with too long split cuffs. This entire outfit looks like a reject from Project Runway. (Credit: my mom.) She does get points for pairing it with shoes that mimic the pattern in her top and carrying a practical purse. I always carry a big purse for all the crap I need to have with me at all times. Jessie J: In America, ‘I’m kind of celebrated as one of the greatest singers’

Maybe I’m wrong, but the few times I’ve written about British singer Jessie J, I feel like most people were divided into two camps: Camp “Who?” and Camp “Meh.” It’s not that Jessie is particularly boring, untalented or uneventful – I actually think she’s got a great voice and she’s more interesting than many of the pop starlets today. But Jessie might have overestimated her popularity. Maybe. Jessie covers the new issue of Women’s Health UK, and she tells the magazine – which has a mostly British readership – that she doesn’t get a lot of respect in Britain but she’s “celebrated as one of the greatest singers” in America. Really? Some highlights: She’s received two Brit Awards but she’s never been asked to perform: “It makes me sad… I’ve done the Grammys, the VMAs. My profile in America is that I’m kind of celebrated as one of the greatest singers and I love it.” Her goal: “I wanna be up there with the Celine Dions, the Whitneys, the Beyoncés and Arethas. I go hard because I hope and pray that one day, people look back and go, ‘She could really f–king sing, you know.’ Which is why I keep going.” She wants kids: “I talk about my children every day even though they don’t exist. It sounds really weird, but I do. I put into the universe that I love them…who knows when it’s going to happen?” Turning 28: “The 27 Club and all that. It’s scary. I mean, the most hardcore I get is a glass of ginger wine, but if you’re successful at 27, the speed of your life is unreal. Nearly 30. You need to get your sh-t together.” [From E! News and Women’s Health] Yeah… she’s not going to win a lot of support in her own country with this interview. The thing is, she really does have a great, powerful voice. But I sometimes wonder if she needs to nail down one specific sound. I remember reading something about Jessie’s musical popularity with gay men, and I do think that’s where she should aim: be the next Cher. Killer voice, power ballads, gay-club anthems. Do that. And no, I don’t think America celebrates her as “one of the greatest singers.” Americans hears her music and they think, “Great voice, who sings it?” And then they forget her name as soon as they hear it. Amal Clooney made George wait 25 minutes before she agreed to marry him

George Clooney appeared on The Ellen Show this week to promote Hail Caesar, his latest film offering and probably the first Clooney film I’ve been interested in for a very long time. But I love the Coen Brothers and I love that they almost always cast Clooney as a dunce. We haven’t had a good old fashioned Clooney promotional tour since last year’s Tomorrowland, during which we were inundated with stories about Amal Clooney and how fantastic/brilliant/amazing she is. I’m at the point now where I think George partially (or mostly) got married to change his branding, his script, his public persona. He was at a point in his life where his stories were no longer “cute,” so he had to get some new stories. Enter Amal. And now he can’t (or won’t) shut up about her, about their marriage, about their wedding and all of it. So, when he was chatting with Ellen, he went into detail about how he proposed. This story has the weird vibe of feeling too rehearsed and completely untrue. George claims he decided Amal was his future wife about six months into their relationship, a fact which will probably cause Stacy Keibler to do some math. He claims that they didn’t talk about getting married at all beforehand and that he alone tried to set the scene by lighting candles, cooking dinner and choosing their playlist. He makes it sound like it came so out of left field that Amal wasn’t even wearing a cute outfit. Then: “I’ve got it all set up, timed out and the song is coming and she gets up to go wash the dishes, which she’s never done. And I’m like, ‘What are you doing?’ and she comes back in. And finally I said, ‘Ya know, I blew out the candle’ and I said, ‘I think the lighter’s in the box behind you.’ And she reaches around and she pulls out the box and I’ve got just the ring sitting in there and she pulls it out and she looks at it and she’s like, ‘It’s a ring’ – like as if somebody had left it there some other time…I’m doing all the moves I could do with my face, and I got down on my knee and said, ‘I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you.’ And she kept looking at the ring and she was looking at me and she was like ‘Oh my God.’ And now we know because of the playlist, how long it actually took, and it was like 25 minutes, 25 minutes! And finally I was like, ‘Look, I hope the answer is yes, but I need an answer I’m 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon.’” Do you believe this story? Or is this just a monologue that he’s prepared? I don’t know. But I never thought I would see the day when George Clooney would be this eager to talk about his personal life to this extent. Oh, and he says at the beginning of the story that the proposal was “one of those horrible moments we didn’t talk about.” Yes, that’s why he prepared a monologue about it. And here’s video of Clooney and Rihanna playing Never Have I Ever. Is it just me or was Clooney trying to flirt with Rih-Rih and she wasn’t having it? Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.
