Priyanka Chopra: “Beauty has nothing to do with me. I was born with it”

On feminism: “For eons, women have been told how to be or think or dress. I come from a part of the world where this debate is so heated, especially because we’re a country that has goddesses. We pray to women. But at the same time, we prey on them…Feminism needs men to understand that we don’t want to berate you or kill you or hate you. We just need you to stand by us.” On beauty: “Beauty has nothing to do with me. I was born with it. But I don’t want to be known by the fact that I’m beautiful. I want to be known for the fact that I’m an achiever. Not even an actor. I don’t want a label. I don’t want a box. I want a legacy.” On the phrase ‘woman of color’: “I know everything is about diversity right now. But I think it should be about humanity. It’s 2016. It’s so easy to separate ourselves and become smaller and smaller pieces of humanity. I don’t like the phrase ‘woman of color.’ I feel like that puts women in a box. I’m a woman, whether I’m white, Black, brown, green, blue, or pink — whatever. I think we need to start looking beyond that. It would be a big win for women, period.” … says Priyanka. Kate Upton: “It was considered a great thing to have a curvy body to fill out a bathing suit”

On whether she always wanted to model: I knew nothing about fashion growing up, because in Florida you just wear bikinis and flip-flops. But kids can be cruel, and they used to make fun of me for having long legs and bushy eyebrows. My mom would flip through magazines and say, “Look, all these models have that too.” So I decided I wanted to be a model. On whether she was ever told to lose weight: All. The. Time. At first I tried to diet to become their image, but eventually I realized that it wasn’t realistic—that this is just the shape of my body. So I had to block them out. I think that the people who are the loudest about wanting to change you are the people with the least amount of vision and creativity. On people saying she doesn’t have the right look: Where I grew up, it was considered a great thing to have a curvy body to fill out a bathing suit. For that to be a negative was so confusing to me. And besides, when I started working, I was booked constantly, mostly for catalog work. So when people were saying, “Oh, she doesn’t have the right look for a model,” I thought, Then why am I working every single day? There are so many different directions you can take in the modeling industry, so many ways to be successful. … says Kate in Glamour. See more! Joan Smalls: “I would double up my socks so my calves looked bigger”

On other barriers she’d like to break: “I’d like to see more beauty campaigns for girls who are mixed Latina and black. And if I’m in them, that’s great, but overall there’s a scarcity there. Companies need to be more mindful of the world we live in and who their consumer is.” On wishing she were curvier while growing up in Puerto Rico: “Everyone does, especially when you’re younger and guys don’t like you because you’re flat-chested and have skinny legs. I would double up my socks so my calves looked bigger. But around junior high school, my attitude changed. I was like, It is what it is.” … says 28 year-old Joan. Venus Williams: “Following a vegan diet on the court, you have to plan your life out”

On her almost 100% vegan lifestyle: What led me a vegan lifestyle? My sisters, they saw me having health difficulties and they said ‘why don’t you try a plant-based lifestyle?’ When you have an opportunity to do it together, there’s nothing like it because the motivation is there and you’re not alone. Following a vegan diet on the court, you have to plan your life out. I try wherever I’m traveling to scope out places where you can eat, bring things with me to the hotel. I always have a blender, I get to go to fresh markets around the world. … says Venus. See more!
