Simone Ashley & Lucy Liu joined the cast of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ sequel

I’ll admit it, I wasn’t entirely sold on the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. The first film has that special iconic magic, where you can rewatch it at any time and still enjoy the journey and the performances. A Cinderella story about work, not romance, with every cast member perfectly filling their role. There are still question marks about the plotline for the sequel, but we know Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt are returning. We also know that Kenneth Branagh has been added to the cast as Miranda’s second/third/fourth husband (who knows). One major cast member from the first film is not expected to come back for the sequel: Adrien Grenier, the villain/boyfriend! I doubt Simon Baker will pop in either (although that would be a great cameo.)

Well, more casting news! Apparently, they’ve added Simone Ashley to the cast! Deadline just had the exclusive on the casting, they have no idea what her character is in the story. Someone suggested that Simone will play Miranda’s latest executive assistant (the new Emily). If that’s the case, I hope they do it like they did Emily Blunt and allow Simone to use her real British accent. Meanwhile, Variety had even more casting news:

Can Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak and Pauline Chalamet spell Gabbana?

Their fashion knowledge will be put to the test as the actors join the cast of “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” And they won’t be the only new faces around Runway magazine. Other newcomers to the call sheet include Broadway stars Helen J. Shen (“Maybe Happy Ending”) and Conrad Ricamora (“Oh, Mary!”), as well as comedian Caleb Hearon.

Meanwhile, two recognizable characters, Tracie Thoms, who played Lily, the handbag-loving best friend of Anne Hathaway’s character, and Tibor Feldman, who portrayed Irv Ravitz, the chairman of Runway’s parent company Elias-Clark, will reprise their roles in the sequel.

[From Variety]

Someone suggested that B.J. Novak is playing Andrea’s boyfriend or husband…which would fit for that character, honestly. Justin Theroux sort of fits in this world as well. Lucy Liu??? She better be a powerful B going toe-to-toe with Miranda. I don’t know though… is the sequel going to be too star-studded?

‘F1’ director: Simone Ashley’s lines were cut entirely & she’s only seen briefly

As we discussed, Simone Ashley’s role was almost entirely cut from F1, the Joseph Kosinski-directed vroom-vroom movie. It’s looking more and more like Apple and Kosinski decided that if they were spending $300 million-plus on this stupid production, they needed to center everything on Brad Pitt rather than the actors of color. It would not surprise me at all if Damson Idris’s role was dramatically downsized from what it was originally supposed to be as well. Simone filmed a supporting role as Idris’s character’s girlfriend. She was on set filming off-and-on for months on the two-year production. What’s even more galling is that Simone was already promoting F1 as well – she’s been promoting multiple projects for months, and she’s talked up F1 and even done F1-specific appearances. All of that to see her role cut down to the point where she doesn’t even have any lines in the movie. Joseph Kosinski confirmed the drastic cut to People Mag:

Simone Ashley’s part in F1 was ultimately cut from the final film. It was announced in July 2024 that the Bridgerton star had been cast in the high-octane Formula One racing drama alongside Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, and she was later photographed filming scenes for the project.

However, her role was removed from the film, which also stars Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia and Javier Bardem. (She briefly appears onscreen but has no lines of dialogue.)

When asked about the change to Ashley’s part, director Joseph Kosinski tells PEOPLE, “It happens on every film, where you have to shoot more than you can use. There were two or three storylines that ultimately didn’t make into the final cut.”

“But Simone, she’s an incredible talent, incredible actress, incredible singer, and I would love to work with her again,” Kosinski adds.

The actress has not spoken out about how her role was reduced in the film as of yet.

Speaking to ELLE earlier this month, Ashley, 30, said making F1 was a “crazy” experience. “I have a very small part, but I’m grateful to be in that movie,” she said at the time. “I got to experience many Grands Prix. I don’t think I’ll ever do anything like that again.”

[From People]

I hope it’s clear that I’m waging a little “don’t watch this movie” campaign. I was already waging that campaign before this Simone Ashley news, mostly because Brad Pitt is trash and Apple needs to stop investing obscene amounts of money platforming his abusive ass. But this Simone story is galling, and it really pisses me off that she was almost entirely cut out of this movie. Ten bucks says that there are lots and lots of lingering shots of Brad’s janky facelift and a lot of attention paid to HIS storyline.

Simone Ashley’s supporting role in ‘F1’ was apparently drastically cut down

While Tom Cruise has a reputation as someone who mentors younger actors and hypes them up within productions and in the promotion, Cruise still has younger actors’ performances cut so that his films are centered on him and his sh-t. It happened with Manny Jacinto on Top Gun: Maverick – almost all of his scenes were cut. Well, the same thing has now happened with Brad Pitt and his dumbass vroom-vroom movie, F1. The basics of the story: Pitt’s character Sonny comes out of retirement to drive for an F1 team owned by Kerry Condon and managed by Javier Bardem. The team already has a hotshot young driver played by Damson Idris, and Sonny is supposed to compete with and mentor Damson’s character, Joshua.

They filmed this f–king movie for the better part of two years, and there are tons of photos from the international sets and races, so much so that people were well aware that Simone Ashley was cast in the role of Joshua’s girlfriend. There are photos of Damson and Simone at various races and looking coupled-up on set. Simone was also announced as part of the cast, and she’s been promoting the film for months as one of her many upcoming projects. She spent months on set, shooting scenes too. She even posted wrap photos on her Instagram!!

Well, now that F1 is being screened and premiered, people are talking a lot about how Simone’s role was massively cut back. She’s apparently only seen in one or two scenes. My guess? F1 director Joseph Kosinski (who also directed Top Gun: Maverick) and Brad Pitt decided that the movie needed to be more about Pitt trying to emote through his facelift and going vroom-vroom in fast cars, and why not cut out the woman of color?

Manny Jacinto’s involvement was publicized but his scenes in Top Gun: Maverick were cut without warning. He only found out when he sat in the theater.

Now it’s happening again. Simone Ashley’s casting in the F1 movie was pushed everywhere. Major publications ran it and so did… pic.twitter.com/ulCrh4z6eO

Cannes: Cate Blanchett in LV; Simone Ashley in Westwood; Viola Davis in Gucci

The Cannes Film Festival is finally over and done with, and we now have a few months to recover for the double-whammy of Venice and Toronto. First, let’s get to the Cannes Film Festival’s winners. While Jennifer Lawrence left Cannes with a lot of awards-season buzz, she did not pick up an acting award for Die, My Love. The acting awards went to Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent (a Brazilian film) and Nadia Melliti for The Little Sister. The Palme d’Or (the grand prize of the festival) went to an Iranian film, Un Simple Accident. The runner-up prize, the Grand Prix, went to Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. The Jury Prize went to two films: Sirât and Sound of Falling. Distributor Neon has now won the Palme d’Or six years in a row. Incredible.

Now, let’s get to the fashion. The last days of Cannes were surprisingly great when it came to fashion moments, too bad that most people were already burned out from all of the Z-listers traipsing around in terrible gowns. Let’s start with the queen, Cate Blanchett, who wore a custom Louis Vuitton. Why doesn’t LV make this kind of dress for their brand ambassadors, huh?

More fashion notes: Simone Ashley’s Vivienne Westwood dress is a DREAM and all of the fashion girls are obsessed; Viola Davis stunned in Gucci; Elle Fanning’s Chanel fairy-princess look is on brand, but I think she could do better; I’m not crazy about Aubrey Plaza’s Miu Miu or Margaret Qualley’s Chanel; Halle Berry (Cannes jury member) ended the festival in Dior, which was good except for the shoulders; Gillian Anderson’s Emilia Wickstead dress is truly one of my favorite dresses ever, that shade of green, the way she styled it, the cut, it’s all perfect.

Jodie Turner Smith wore Burberry to the 2024 Fashion Awards: lovely?

Here are photos from last night’s 2024 Fashion Awards in London. There were several big names in attendance, and a great deal of wacky fashion. One of my favorite looks of the night? Jodie Turner-Smith in Burberry. She attended the event with Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee. Jodie has been saying yes to everything these days – TV shows, movies, any role she’s offered, any paycheck. I would love it if she got a contract with Burberry. The dress is gorgeous. The coat is too, although I thought it was a real fur coat. Turns out, it’s a really high-quality fake fur. Damn.

Rihanna picked up the Cultural Innovator Award, which is well-deserved because she is a cultural innovator. Unfortunately, Rihanna looked goofy as hell in this Christian Lacroix ensemble. Jamiroquai-looking ass. Even A$AP Rocky seemed a little bit over it, but he kept trying to dodge that stupid hat.

I like Ashley Graham’s dress a lot!

Ellie Goulding wore one of my favorite trends in couture: the quilted puffer jacket as evening wear. Hey, it’s December, I can’t blame women for wanting to be warm.

I love Simone Ashley. I hate the baby bangs and the Prada mullet dress.

Nicola Coughlan in Gaurav Gupta. I love this. I love how much Nicola loves fashion too.

Anne Hathaway wore vintage Valentino to the British Fashion Awards: gorgeous?

Here are some photos from last night’s British Fashion Awards, an annual event celebrating fashion and British fashion in particular, although most attendees aren’t wearing British designers. Take Anne Hathaway, who turned up at the event in a vintage Valentino gown. This is literally from the Valentino archives, a museum piece which Anne was allowed to borrow. It’s very pretty, but if you got a chance to wear an archived Valentino, wouldn’t you go for one of the bigger, brighter looks?

Simone Ashley also wore Valentino, but not a vintage piece. This is… very short. I mean, she has legs for days, but lord, how did she sit down?

Rita Ora wore a specially made Primark dress with a chrome spike down the back. From the front, it looks like a basic black dress, but the party’s in the back. Do you think Taika Waititi is tired of this?

Kate Moss looked really good here – I like that she kept it simple.

Letitia Wright wore Prada – I’m so glad that “dress-over-pants” is coming back into style.

Ashley Park wore a big fish! LOL.

Simone Ashley wore Tamara Ralph to the Vogue World LFW event: stunning?

Here are more photos from the Vogue World event in London last night, which was a premiere and preview of London Fashion Week. The attendance was spectacular and allllll of the British fashion girls and It Girls came out. Simone Ashley was serving LEGS in this Tamara Ralph Haute Couture look, which is bonkers. Ordinarily, I’m not into all of these “netting” styles, but look closely – that’s not netting, it’s all made of pearls. Incredible.

Sienna Miller wore Schiaparelli Haute Couture – she’s knocked up, obviously, and she looks like a swan. Or a goose. Or an ostrich?

Jodie Turner Smith wore Viktor & Rolf. She was one of two women (that I saw) wearing panties as outerwear. I mean, she’s Jodie and she kills most looks, but I would have chosen differently for her, if I was styling her.

Gemma Chan in custom Louis Vuitton – she’s an LV girl and this isn’t bad (for LV).

Georgia May Jagger in Vivienne Westwood. Hilariously silly.

Sabrina Elba in custom Fendi. Actually pretty great?

Maisie Williams in Maison Margiela. It’s a very British look [derogatory].

Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Roksanda. Actually one of my favorite dresses of the night, although I would have trashed the gloves.

Nicola Coughlan in Harris Reed. It’s costume-y and it looks heavy, but she’s having fun.
