Arrests Haley Joel Osment

Haley Joel Osment apologizes for saying offensive things during his arrest

A few days ago, People Magazine exclusively reported that Haley Joel Osment was arrested at a ski lodge/resort in Mammoth Lakes, California. There weren’t tons of details, but the police confirmed to People Mag that Osment was arrested for public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. Osment was arrested and booked on April 8th, and he was released from custody soon after. So, I thought this was bad, but I also thought, hey, sh-t happens and it sucks, but it sounds like Osment was just partying too hard on vacation. Well, Mammoth Lakes police released footage of Osment’s arrest, and he was calling the arresting officers “Nazis” and he also used an antisemitic slur (yikes). Haley has now issued a public apology for what he said and did while he was “in the throes of a blackout.”

Haley Joel Osment is apologizing after using racial slurs against a police officer while being arrested earlier this month. The actor, 37, was arrested and booked for alleged public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance at a ski lodge in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., on Tuesday, April 8. On Thursday, April 17, the Mono County District Attorney’s office said in a statement he was charged with possession of cocaine and disorderly conduct, and his arraignment is scheduled for June 7. He is now issuing an apology for the “disgraceful language” he used while being arrested.

“I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior. Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner,” Osment says in a statement shared with PEOPLE on Thursday, April 17. “The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place.”

Osment — who lost his home in the Altadena, Calif., home in the Eaton Fire in January — continued: “But that’s no excuse for using this disgusting word. From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to absolutely everyone that this hurts. What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage – I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me. I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake.”

In bodycam footage obtained by PEOPLE on Thursday, Osment is seen being placed under arrest and heard repeatedly claiming, “I’m being attacked.” When asked for his name, Osment repeats, “I’m an American.”

Police then search the actor and recover a $20 bill before putting him in a police car. While speaking with bystanders at the scene, the officer unfolds the bill and discovers a substance inside, telling those around to “be careful.” It’s unclear what was inside the $20 bill. A police source exclusively told PEOPLE on Wednesday that the “controlled substance” Osment was arrested for “is presumed to be cocaine. We sent it for testing. We will have the results soon.”

The bodycam footage also shows one witness telling an officer that Osment was drinking at a nearby bar, however, employees cut him off after he spilled a drink. He became “aggravated” and “argumentative” and tried to get on a ski lift, but employees wouldn’t let him and called police, the witness alleged.

In bodycam footage from inside the car, Osment is heard saying, “I’m being kidnapped by a f—— Nazi.” He later calls the arresting officer a racial, antisemitic slur.

The actor has had legal trouble before. In 2018, police were called when Osment had a public verbal scuffle at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Super Bowl Sunday in 2018. In 2006, when he was 18, Osment was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving after he was injured in a car accident. He later pleaded no contest to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of possession of marijuana and was sentenced to three years of probation.

[From People]

Wow. I’m including the arrest video below (it’s edited for time, but you get the idea). It’s actually very clear that Osment was blackout drunk and I totally believe he has zero memory of what he said and did with the police. Apparently, when he’s on cocaine and booze, he turns into Mel Gibson. Which is WILD. I’m glad he issued a thorough apology and I hope he gets some help. I hope this is his rock-bottom.

Arrests Pavel Durov

Telegram founder Pavel Durov, now under arrest, claims to have 100 children??

I remember, right after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when Russian citizens claimed that their access to most social media platforms and messaging apps was cut off or strongly discouraged by the Kremlin. The Kremlin basically told everyone that they could only use Telegram, a messaging app developed by shadowy Russian tech billionaire Pavel Durov. I’ve never used Telegram, although I’ve heard stories about how it’s grown in popularity with Europeans and Russians. Well, over the weekend, Pavel Durov was arrested in France for all of the criminal sh-t being done by Telegram’s users. This is a huge story in Europe and Russia and it’s a huge story for any tech billionaire who believes he should not be held liable for what happens on his platform (cough cough Elon Musk cough). So I was reading this CNN story about Durov and did you know this guy claims to have 100 children??

Pavel Durov is a lot of things to a lot of people. Programming prodigy. Billionaire entrepreneur. Kremlin stooge. Free-speech fighter. Biological father to at least 100 kids.

Durov, the elusive founder of Telegram who was detained in France over the weekend, cuts the figure of a mysterious, globe-trotting tech bro with Mark Zuckerberg’s prodigiousness, Jack Dorsey’s bizarre lifestyle habits and Elon Musk’s libertarian streak – plus a similar obsession with pronatalism and fathering children. Durov said in July that he had fathered more than 100 children thanks to sperm donations he had made over the past 15 years.

Worth an estimated $9.15 billion according to Bloomberg and armed with an array of passports and residences, Durov has for a decade lived a life without borders, a man on an often-shirtless journey to secure the freedom of communication from the prying eyes of governments, democratically elected or otherwise.

Now, Durov’s legal trouble is drudging up an old debate, pitting Telegram’s end-to-end encryption, which keeps communications between users secure even from the company’s employees, against the security concerns of various governments and the European Union’s campaign to rein in big tech.

[From CNN]

Durev built Telegram back when Mark Zuckerberg bought WhatsApp, because Durev didn’t think anything on the market was good enough. Telegram’s double-blind encryption system means that it’s the messaging app of choice for terrorists, despots, coup plotters and, as always, pedophiles. And of course this guy is a “pronatalist.” That’s in the grand tradition of creepy, shadowy, authoritarian-supporting tech billionaires being obsessed with repopulating the earth with their “seed.” I can’t believe sperm banks let this guy donate that much. Ew. I really hope he doesn’t have that many children out there. It’s some Boys From Brazil bullsh-t.

Arrests Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Sag Harbor

I remember, years ago, when it felt like every celebrity was drinking and driving. There was like a three-year rash of celebrity DUIs and DWIs. It was legitimately a “trend” and a horrible one at that. There was significant backlash to the trend at the time too and Mothers Against Drunk Driving came out repeatedly to educate young people. Then drunk-driving was replaced by texting-and-driving as an issue. But I digress. We haven’t had a big-name celebrity get caught drunk driving in a minute. That’s what happened in Sag Harbor, New York on Monday. Justin Timberlake was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Justin Timberlake was arrested on Long Island on Monday night and accused of driving while intoxicated, authorities said.

The pop superstar, who was still in custody in Sag Harbor on Tuesday morning, the Sag Harbor Village Police confirmed to NBC News.

He will face a DWI charge, a court official said.

[From NBC News]

My guess is that Justin has been drinking too much for years. His face tells the tale, iykyk. I remember when he was caught being completely sh-tfaced in New Orleans and cheating on his wife too – that happened in 2019. And you know it’s bad when someone is drinking to excess on a MONDAY. Anyway, shame on him. He’s in his 40s – he knows better and he’s extremely lucky he didn’t hurt himself or someone else. Lock him up!!

Arrests Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj was arrested & held for six hours in Amsterdam for carrying drugs

On Saturday, Nicki Minaj was arrested in Amsterdam on suspicion of carrying drugs. She was arrested at the airport, as she was trying to fly from Amsterdam to Manchester for a concert. She filmed/live-streamed and live-tweeted the encounters she had with some of the Dutch police and airport security and honestly, from what I saw, they were trying to be nice to her. But yeah, she was clearly carrying. While many drugs are legal in The Netherlands, you can’t carry drugs on international flights.

Nicki Minaj has been released from police custody in the Netherlands, just hours after the rapper recorded herself being arrested by Dutch officers for allegedly “carrying drugs.”

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, May 25, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee confirmed the release of the rapper.

“We have just released a 41-year-old American woman who we arrested this afternoon at Schiphol on suspicion of exporting soft drugs. After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the suspect was fined and can continue her journey,” the statement read, translated from Dutch.

In an Instagram Live video that was posted on X by a Minaj fan account, police officers in Amsterdam could be heard telling Minaj that she was “under arrest” for “carrying drugs,” before asking her to get in a van to go to the police station.

After denying the claims and asking for a lawyer multiple times, Minaj (born Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty) then got into a van at what appeared to be an airport.

Minaj was on her way to Manchester, England, for a show part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour when she filmed the incident.

[From People]

Minaj was apparently held in jail or whatever for about six hours before they released her with a fine. Which honestly sounds like they might have given her preferential treatment? I’m sure she’s not the first American tourist caught with drugs at the airport, and I’m sure those other tourists have dealt with more than a six-hour jail mess and a fine.

Anyway, Minaj ended up making it to Manchester but she canceled her Manchester show, then she performed last night in Birmingham, England. She also posted a statement to her social media, claiming that her security guard was carrying “pre-rolled joints” and they weren’t hers. She also claimed that her lawyers would take care of everything, and that she would reschedule her Manchester show.

Drunk man arrested at Yellowstone after being treated for injuries from kicking a bison

In March Pierce Brosnan resolved that little misunderstanding he had with Yellowstone National Park. You remember, the “recollections may vary” moment where he originally pleaded Not Guilty to trespassing on a protected thermal spring area, despite photographic evidence to the contrary, so then he finally apologized, pleaded Guilty, and paid a fine? Well for this month’s installment of Shenanigans Going Down at Yellowstone National Park, I present to you Clarence Yoder and McKenna Bass of Idaho Falls, Idaho. While on an inebriated perusal of the park where Bass was behind the wheel of their car, Yoder exited the vehicle to interact with the wildlife. And by “interact with,” I mean he kicked one bison and further harassed a whole herd before he was stopped by his own injuries and the rangers stepping in. I call this episode, FAFO: Cattle Edition.

An Idaho man has been arrested on an alcohol-related crime and other related charges after he was accused of kicking a bison at Yellowstone National Park.

The man, 40-year-old Clarence Yoder of Idaho Falls, approached a bison within 25 yards on April 21 and was injured after he “harassed a herd of bison” and kicked an animal in the leg, according to a statement from the park.

The incident occurred on the West Entrance Road near the Seven Mile Bridge, 7 miles east of Yellowstone’s West Entrance. Rangers found Yoder and the vehicle’s driver, McKenna Bass, 37, also of Idaho Falls, near the West Entrance and stopped them in the town of West Yellowstone, Montana.

Yoder was hurt in the bison encounter, the park said, and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, where he was evaluated, treated and released before being taken to the Gallatin County Detention Center.

He was arrested and is charged with being under the influence of alcohol to a degree that may endanger oneself, disorderly conduct as to create or maintain a hazardous condition, approaching wildlife and disturbing wildlife, the park said in a statement.

Bass was also arrested and charged with driving under the influence, interference for failure to yield to emergency light activation, and disturbing wildlife.

Yoder and Bass appeared in court April 22 and pleaded not guilty. According to Yellowstone, each violation can result in fines of up to $5,000 and six months in jail.

The incident remains under investigation, Yellowstone said.

The incident was the first report of a visitor injured by bison this year, Yellowstone said. The last reported incident was July 17, 2023 the only incident reported last year. Three incidents that caused injuries were reported in 2022.

[From USA Today]

I’m with the bison! For beef’s sake, we’ve decimated the species to practically nothing; leave them alone on their designated grounds! Yellowstone in particular is the only place in the US where bison have continuously lived since prehistoric times. You don’t assault and harass someone in their own home! Yes, I watched all four hours of the Ken Burns documentary, and my heart wept for how we’ve treated the shaggy, humpbacked beasts. I’m generally not a vindictive person, but I hope Yoder & Bass each get the full fines and sentences. They were a danger to themselves, the animals, and other humans they could’ve encountered. As a side note, is it me or do the names of these miscreants fit well with their roles in this story? Something about the cadence of McKenna Bass & Clarence Yoder is reminding me of Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow. Only instead of robbing banks, this duo were robbing bison of some peace and quiet! Good grief, between this and puppy/goat-killer Governor Kristi Noem, it really has been an abysmal week in animal news.

This isn’t the man in the story:

A woman in Sacramento was arrested for stealing 65 Stanley cups from one store

Up until recently I’ve been laughing along bemusedly at the Stanley cup craze. But now I’m starting to get nervous that it’s a bad omen for an election year. Quick recap: TikTok has bewitched the masses into losing their ever-loving minds over the $45 Stanley Quencher. Which is a water bottle. That’s it! Maybe it’s just because the caucuses have begun and I’m projecting all my fears onto the public’s vehement selection of a water bottle that I patently don’t understand the zealotry over. And speaking of, police arrested a woman in Sacramento for stealing 65 Stanley cups from one store, about $2,500 worth of merchandise. Please let the madness stop

The craze for Stanley stainless steel drinking cups reached new levels last week when a woman was arrested for allegedly stealing 65 of them, worth almost $2,500, from a store in California.

Police in Roseville, Placer County, northeast of Sacramento, said Sunday that they were called to a reported theft from a store on Stanford Ranch Road in the city on January 17.

“Staff saw a woman take a shopping cart full of Stanley water bottles without paying for them. The suspect refused to stop for staff and stuffed her car with the stolen merchandise,” police said in a statement on Facebook.

“An officer spotted the suspect vehicle as it entered Highway 65 from Galleria Blvd and initiated a traffic stop,” the statement said.

The so-far unnamed woman, 23, from Sacramento, was arrested for grand theft. Pictures released by police show her car trunk and passenger seat stuffed with a variety of cups.

Stanley cups have become highly-sought items in recent months, thanks to a trend driven by social media influencers. The “Quencher” cup, which holds 40 fluid ounces and retails on the Stanley website at $45, has in particular become a fashionable item.

“While Stanley Quenchers are all the rage, we strongly advise against turning to crime to fulfill your hydration habits,” police said.

[From NBC News]

OK here’s where I’m struggling, aside from the fact that we’re still just talking about stainless steel water bottles: the store employees see this woman with 65 Stanleys in her shopping cart, they ask her to stop but she refuses, loads up her car, and drives away. Was it not possible to detain her while she was transferring the cups from cart to car? Please educate me! Because right now I’m just imagining myself as the thief and… yeah I would totally be apprehendable in the act of moving 65 water bottles into my car. The maneuver would be neither smooth nor swift. Plus I’m a responsible shopping cart user and would be simply unable to leave the parking lot without returning the cart to one of the designated stations. Thieves can have manners too, you know. Anyway, I applaud the police for not only stopping the theft in action, but even more so for issuing the superbly dry statement: “we strongly advise against turning to crime to fulfill your hydration habits.” No notes.

Arrests Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid was arrested for marijuana possession in the Cayman Islands

The marijuana laws have loosened (if not completely disappeared) in so many states in the US, we barely hear about celebrities getting arrested on drug charges. I figure pretty much everyone in half of the country (if not more) has easy access to pot, whether it’s through medical dispensaries or simple open-to-anyone sales. Young people don’t know what it was like in the 1980s and 1990s, when marijuana was considered a “gateway drug,” and being arrested for possession could mean some really terrible sh-t for your future. All of which to say, Gigi Hadid was arrested for possession in the Cayman Islands. She was carrying marijuana in her bag at the airport! Good lord.

Gigi Hadid had a bumpy start to her summer vacation. The supermodel was embarking on a girls’ trip to the Cayman Islands on July 10 when she was arrested at Owen Roberts International Airport, E! News has learned.

According to local outlet Cayman Marl Road, shortly after Hadid and her pal arrived via a private plane, custom officials allegedly found “ganja and utensils used for the consumption of ganja” in their luggage.

Hadid and her friend were then arrested on “suspicion Importation of Ganja and Importation of Utensils used for the consumption of ganja,” the outlet reports, adding that they were then taken to the Prisoner Detention Center, where they were released on bail.

Two days later, on July 12, Hadid and her pal were formally charged during a court appearance, where they pleaded guilty and were both fined $1,000, according to Cayman Marl Road. They are not facing any charges.

“Gigi was traveling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC with a medical license,” her rep tells E! News. “It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island.”

E! News has reached out to authorities has not heard back.

[From E! News]

I mean… I would never carry on any flight, especially an international flight, regardless of medical license and regardless of the medical-use laws. That’s another thing ‘90s kids will tell you: you never carry drugs on commercial flights! Don’t assume you know all of the drug laws of other countries! There are too many horror stories. That being said, my feeling is that Gigi got off lightly, probably because of her celebrity. I hope this will be a lesson learned – don’t carry drugs internationally. Especially when you’re rich and famous, you’ll be able to find a dealer wherever you go.

Her vacation was barely interrupted – the Cayman Islands probably got thousands of dollars in free tourism advertising from this incident. Gigi posted photos and videos from her vacation too, nary a mention of her arrest.
