Matthew McConaughey is currently promoting his new movie, The Lost Bus, which hit theaters on September 19 and will begin streaming on Apple TV on October 3. Matthew’s 17-year-old son, Levi McConaughey, and his 93-year-old mother, Kay McCabe (aka MaMac), both have small roles in the movie. Levi plays the son of Matthew’s character, a role that he absolutely did not get because of his famous last name. Kay, of course, plays his mother. All three McCs sat down for a cover story with People, where they chatted about Levi’s acting debut, how Matthew’s parenting style is different from his own mother’s, and recounted some old stories.

On how MM’s parenting style differs from Kay’s:

Matthew: “In our family Camila and I try to listen longer, try to understand. Camila and I will explain more of what we mean by more than just, ‘I said so.’”

Kay: “I asked them, ‘Do you ever get in any kind of argument?’ And I don’t know which one said it, but it was more or less, “When we do, we don’t do it around the kids.”

Matthew on how she’d blab about him to the tabloids: I’d say we’re closer now. We had about an eight-year period where I had to have short conversations with her on our Sunday phone calls because she was sharing a lot of that information. I’d tell her something on Sunday between son and mom, and Tuesday I’d read about it in the news or see it in the local paper. She couldn’t help herself…About eight years after that I got stable enough with my own position and fame that I was like, “You know what? My mom can say whatever the hell she wants.” It’s much more fun now.

Levi on the pressure of being “Matthew McConaughey’s son:” “[I]t’s just starting. And as much as people can say, “Oh, you got this because of your father or your mother,” they can open the door, but then it’s going to be up to me to do my thing once I get in there. That’s on me.”

Matthew on his son being a nepobaby: “There’s a line between entitlement and shame. If you can look it right in the eye and deal with it, and if it works out, you’ll see, it’s a hell of a roller coaster.”

Matthew’s advice to Levi on dealing with fame: “I’ve tried to give him some tips that I’ve learned along the way, tried to give him some of those tips earlier than I understood them. It’s hard to keep your feet on the ground to sift out the real stuff from the BS. But over time you’ve got to get that sixth sense. It’s important that he has his own ownership of who he is and becomes. And [acting] will be a part of that if he continues to do it, part of finding his identity, but it can’t be his full identity.”

Ah, yes, who can forget about how Kay used to leak stories about her own son? Good for them for moving past it (I guess), but it still blows my mind. Then again, she’s always been messy. After all, she married Matthew’s dad three times and divorced him twice and bragged about having relations with Woody Harrelson’s dad.

Anyway, it was nice to get to know Levi a little bit more. He seems like a nice kid. He’s lucky to have his dad around to give him advice about fame. Their answer about him being a nepo-baby was a decent start, but it would be nice if they just acknowledged the label. It sounds like the McC kids grew up in a very non-Hollywood household. They also talked a little bit about how Levi and his siblings had to do chores and that Camila Alves is big on family traditions. Speaking of, Matthew calmed down a lot after he married Camila. She’s clearly a very stabilizing presence in his life. I bet that’s why Kay decided to “haze” her when they first got together.

Matthew McConaughey’s new movie, The Lost Bus, is out in theaters on September 19 before moving over to Apple TV on October 3. It’s an adaptation of a book based on the 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest wildfire in California. Matthew plays a bus driver who’s trying to get school children and their teacher to safety.

The Lost Bus co-stars America Ferrera as the teacher and Yul Vazquez as a fire battalion chief. Matthew’s 17-year-old son, Levi, and 93-year-old mother, Kay, have small roles in the film. If you’re wondering whether or not Levi McConaughey is Hollywood’s next nepo baby, Matthew doesn’t want you to. According to Matthew, he made Levi audition for his part (playing Matthew’s movie-son). Not only did MM make his son audition for it, he also made him audition without using his last name. There’s no favoritism if the director doesn’t know your last name!

During a Q&A after the screening, McConaughey brought Levi onto the stage before proudly sharing how he came to be cast in the film.

“I had no idea that this young man, my son, was interested [in acting], but when I pitched the script to the family, as I always do before work, the part about Kevin [McKay] having a son, he asked me one day, ‘Well, how old is he?’ I said, ‘He’s about your age.’ And then he goes, ‘Think I could read for it?’ And I didn’t say anything. That wasn’t enough to make me say ‘maybe’ or anything.”

The actor continued, “He came back four more times and I said, ‘Okay, now he’s working for it, for the idea.’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ I knew they hadn’t cast the part. Pulled out the camera, worked with him on a scene, and sent that to [casting director] Francine Maisler, and I said — remember I had a note? — I said, ‘I think it might be good enough for a callback.’ And she wrote back, ‘I think it might be good enough to show to Paul.’ ”

McConaughey said he told Maisler, “When you do that, will you do me one favor? Will you pull the last name off so it’s just, there’s no McConaughey on the end of that?”

“She said yes,” the star recalled. “Next call I got, [Paul] said, he goes, ‘That’s the guy, that’s the son.’ And then he was told, ‘Well, that happens to be Matthew’s son.’ And in Paul fashion, he was like, ‘Even better!’ … So this is all due to Paul. My family’s in this film because of this man to the left.”

I like that Matthew made Levi audition without using his last name, and I buy that he had no idea that his son wanted to get into acting before he spoke up about this role. I can also believe that Matthew is very conscious about the whole nepobaby conversation going on right now. That said, I have questions! What last name did Levi use? I’m presuming that it wasn’t Levi Alves. Did he pull a Jack McFarland and go by “Just Levi?” Jokes aside, I honestly don’t have a problem with Matthew’s mom and kid playing his family in a few scenes in a movie. I am, however, side-eyeing the fact that the casting director allegedly didn’t tell the director that he was watching Matthew’s son. I’ve seen The Studio! There’s no way that Paul Greengrass had no idea who Levi was. It’s cute that Matthew thinks that, though.

That said, The Lost Bus is my kind of movie. I probably won’t watch it in theaters, but I will definitely stream it. Speaking of, I like this new trend of studios releasing movies exclusively in theaters for a few weeks before then adding them to the streaming services. It feels like a decent compromise between those who still prefer the theater experience and those who are content watching a movie at home.

A few weeks ago, I watched the movie Dazed and Confused for the first time. I had no idea until I went down the Wikipedia rabbit hole afterward that it was Mathew McConaughey’s first movie or that he got “discovered” when he met and drank with the movie’s casting director at a bar. That’s so freaking on brand.

Anyway, Matthew’s latest acting project is a movie called The Rivals of Amziah King. The film, which premiered at SXSW’s Film & TV Festival on Monday, also stars Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, and newcomer Angelina LookingGlass. Matthew plays the title character and LookingGlass plays the foster child whom he is mentoring. To promote the film, Matthew did an interview with Variety in which he talked about Amziah, filming a non-voice acting role for the first time in six years, how writing his memoir, Greenlights, changed him, and what he thinks about his season of True Detective.

He was nervous to act again after six years: On the first day shooting “The Rivals of Amziah King,” Matthew McConaughey, his right eye swollen from a bee sting, walked onto the set, raised his hand and asked, “Is anybody else nervous except for me?” The cast and crew let out a collective laugh. “Alright, alright, alright, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t the only one,” the actor said, sounding like a mixture of a preacher and a surfer with his signature drawl. But McConaughey wasn’t joking. He admits he felt creaky returning to the screen after a six-year hiatus, during which he wrote a memoir, “Greenlights,” recorded a few voice roles in films like “Sing 2,” spent time with his family and kept a lower profile. “I needed to write my own story, direct my own story on the page,” McConaughey says of his time away from being in front of the camera.

Why Amziah was the right project: “It’s not where I grew up, but I know of these kind of people and these places and these kind of characters that live in the middle of the country,” McConaughey says. “This group of people in southeast Oklahoma where the film takes place know the Constitution, they know the rules they are living by, and they’re not looking for or getting approval from the rest of the world. I understand them.”

Director Andrew Patterson always wanted Matthew for that role: Patterson had labored on the project for years, enlarging it at one point into a seven episode mini-series, before shrinking it back down again. He always felt that McConaughey possessed the free-wheeling charm that he needed for Amziah, who has a roving band of bee-keepers and musicians who follow him like a caravan of apostles. “I wanted an actor with the type of personality where he could just hang out with them for hours,” he says. “It had to be somebody so disarming, who would just do their thing inside this world I was trying to evoke, and who could be comedic in a dramatic movie. There aren’t many people like that.”

Acting is a ‘vacation:’ “I remembered a couple of things,” he says. “One, how much I truly enjoy performing. Two, I remembered, hey, McConaughey, you’re pretty damn good at this. And three, I remembered that acting is a vacation for me, and what I mean by vacation is that when I’m performing, it’s my singular focus. When I walk out the door in the morning, my wife says, ‘go kick some ass. I got the kiddos. We’re good.’ That’s vacation. Because I’m not multitasking. I’m not compartmentalizing. I’m fully focused on finding the truth of my character.”

Writing his book made him a better actor: “The memoir was extremely honest and it forced me to be honest with myself,” McConaughey says. “It cleared up things you’ve been thinking about for 35 years. And it makes you realize that’s kind of who you are, Matthew. Let’s admit that and shake hands. Bravo. That gave me even more trust in myself, because, you know, there was less to maybe hide about myself. I had shared it. So that’s made it easier for me to be honest as an actor.”

He thinks his season of True Detective is the best one: “I watched, I saw it. Yeah, there’s a lot about it that I appreciated,” McConaughey says, haltingly. “My favorite season — and I feel like I can say this objectively — is Season 1.” He’s picking up steam here, sounding tickled by his own admission. “I happen to be in that one, so I thought that was incredible, incredible television and a great series. I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events in TV.”

On his Amziah co-star, Angelina LookingGlass: “She only knows how to do what so many of us actors forget to do when we learn to quote, unquote, act, which is listen and respond honestly to the truth of a situation,” McConaughey says. “That’s it. That’s the secret. An actor doesn’t want to get caught acting. Every actor worth their salt knows what I’m talking about.”

I was curious to know what Matthew’s last role was, so I looked at his iMDB page. He’s credited as a voice cameo for Deadpool & Wolverine (Cowboypool) and starred in the animated movie Sing 2, which came out in 2021. Based on his description, I’m not sure if I’d classify acting as being a “vacation,” but I get the point he’s trying to make here. When he’s filming a movie, it’s the only thing that he’s focused on doing at the moment. He has been involved in a slew of other endeavors over the past few years, so I understand what he’s trying to say. Him saying that writing his book helped him become a better actor is also *peak* McConaughey, lol. But hey, a little bit of introspective is almost always a good thing.

Let’s see, what else? Those were some really nice words that he had about LookingGlass. I also looked her up and learned that she’s 20 years old. I look forward to seeing her in the role and where her career takes her. Oh, and he’s not wrong about the first season of True Detective being the best one. I really enjoyed the third and fourth seasons, but season one still holds the title. I said what I said.

Matthew McConaughey’s mom, Mary “Kay” McCabe” is, to put it nicely, a firecracker. She’s 93 years old and we have heard a lot of interesting stories about her over the years. For example, during her second divorce from Matthew’s father (before they married for a third time), she, by admission, f-cked Woody Harrelson’s dad. She also infamously “hazed” Matthew’s wife, Camila Alves, when they first started dating. And, of course, who can forget about that time Kay told the whole world about her husband-of-three-times’, err, climatic death?

Kay recently did an interview with Austin Lifestyle in which she talked a lot about her very eventful life, including all three times she married Matthew’s father, Jim, the drama behind Matthew’s birth, her driving status, and her outlook on life in general. It’s actually a pretty good read. Some highlights:

You and Jim McConaughey had quite the love story, beginning with you proposing to him? Jim McConaughey couldn’t make up his mind whether he wanted to get married or not. I met him in college and we were pretty tight, but he couldn’t seem to make up his mind. I knew he loved me, but if we didn’t get married, I could go back to New York and model. So, I sent him an invitation to his wedding and I said if you can make it, fine, but if you don’t show up at the altar, then it’s over and I’m going to New York. But, he did show up. It wasn’t that he didn’t love me, he simply could not make up his mind. And I don’t think he wanted to get married at the time, but I wanted to get married!

You got married and divorced three times. Yes, all to Jim. Not many people can say that. I had three traditional real weddings, once in the Presbyterian church, once in the Catholic church and once in the Methodist church.

And you and Jim had a son, adopted a second son, and then Matthew was a surprise? Oh my, was he ever! Oh my god yes, he was. In fact, he was such a surprise my friend took me up to the hospital to have Matthew and Jim McConaughey said, ‘Well, I don’t know if that’s my son,’ and I said, ‘Then don’t come up and see if he’s your son.’ But he did, he decided to come up and see the baby, and I said, ‘What do you think?’ and he came around. I mean, who else’s baby would it have been?

Do you still drive? No. I was asked to turn the keys over. My boys got together and said I was making poor choices. And I was. I’ve heard of 90-year-old women driving, but I don’t know about that, and I’d never had the chance because they asked me for the keys. I was hitting cars on the side, going too close. I’m not a good driver, not at all, but I don’t like to drive. Matthew and Camilla loan me their driver Marcel.

What’s amazed you about yourself lately? That I’m very resilient. That’s always amazed me and it still amazes me.

What’s bringing you joy lately? What brings me the most joy is my grandchildren, I have six of them, and whenever I’m around any one of them my heart is full of joy. They keep me young, and that’s where I get my joy from now.

What are you most looking forward to this year? Another good year of good health, because I plan on living until 98. I just picked that number. I think that’s a nice number because if you get too old and you can’t get around and your mind isn’t good, then what’s the point?

Seems like you’re in pretty good shape right now. Yes, but I work at it. I read a lot, I keep up with things, you have to work at it at my age.

What are other things that you do to work on it? I keep up with current events on my ipad. I want to know what’s happening in the world. I’m curious, very curious about life, still.

What’s your favorite one of Matthew’s movies? “Dallas Buyer’s Club.” He did a really great job, really and truly. That made me cry.

What’s a favorite mantra? Turn the page.

Is there anything else you want people to know about you? That I’m a happy, happy, happy person. That’s what I want people to take away after they’re around me, that I don’t talk negative, I just simply do not, so I am a happy person. I’ve had situations in my life, that I wrote about in my book, with my real mother and my stepmother, that did not make me happy. But, I learned to be anything other than those two people. That’s advice that I’ve given myself and consequently I’ve chosen to be happy, in spite of the way that I was treated by those two women. You have a choice, and I will never let you take my choices away. We always have a choice. And, I know I’m not going to live forever, but I can’t imagine dying. Some people think about it, but I don’t. I’m mature, but I’m not old. I do love life, I do, I do, I do.

I’ve always thought of Kay as being a free spirit who embodies chaos and this interview pretty much reaffirms this perception, but I will from now on add “resilient” to my description. I don’t think that she and I would get along politically or even agree in the way we go about things, but I do appreciate a lot of her honesty here. I like her outlook on life, what she says about turning the page and choosing to be happy, and how she embraces death by just not thinking too much about it. We really can learn so much from our elders.

That said, Kay and Jim’s relationship sounds like pure chaos, sh-t show energy all of the time. I love Mr. Rosie with all of my heart and soul, but I don’t know if I’d still be all in after all of that. For me, questioning our son’s paternity would be a dealbreaker, but by Kay’s own admission, Matthew was an oopsie baby and she was f-ckig around with Woody’s dad at the time. Again, so much drama. But hey, good for her for putting him on the spot like that with their first marriage and seeing it through a second and third time. Given the time period in which that happened, that ultimatum was ballsy. When you get their whole wild romance in context like this, it definitely makes Jim dying during sex seem like a pretty fitting end.

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves are the co-owners of a new tequila company, Pantalones Organic Tequila. They launched it last year. To market the brand, Camila and Matthew have been posing for a series of pictures in which Matthew isn’t wearing any pants. Get it? ”Pantalones” means “pants,” so he’s going pantless to promote it? Yeah. One of the ads they did recreates the famous poster for Matthew and Kate Hudson’s movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, with Camila standing in for Kate and Matthew wearing his suit jacket with no pants. The ad is titled, “How to Lose Your Pants in 10 Ways.”

Matthew McConaughey is putting a cheeky spin on one of his most memorable movies. The actor teamed up with wife Camila Alves McConaughey to recreate the iconic poster for his 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Although, in the reenactment for the couple’s Pantalones Tequila brand, he ditches his full suit for a more casual look.

In the poster titled How to Lose Your Pants in 10 Ways, the Oscar winner opted to go trouser-free in a nod to the tequila brand’s name, which is Spanish for “pants.” As for Camila, she leaned on her husband in a yellow silk dress identical to the one worn by Kate Hudson, who starred alongside Matthew in the film.

Along with the poster, the brand also launched ten new cocktail recipes inspired by the classic comedy including “Yellow Dress,” “Rom Com Rita” and “You’re So Vain,” a nod to one of the movie’s most unforgettable scenes.

The stunt is the latest in a series of pantsless ads the duo shot for the tequila company, which the couple co-founded in 2023. Camila—who shares kids Levi, 16, Vida, 14, and Livingston, 11, with Matthew—recently revealed their children’s reaction to the scantily-clad photo series.

“They thought they were hilarious,” Camila told People in September. “What’s not to like? It is meant to be fun and silly… getting the wink on the joke!”

And with their kids on board, the couple—who wed in 2012—intend to keep the gag going.


“It’s safe to say you may see Matthew and I pantsless again,” she added, “with some Pantalones in-hand.”

I don’t know how I feel overall about the pantless campaign, but this poster, along with launching the 10 How to Lose a Guy…-themed cocktail recipes, is clever and fun. I would have done totally different pants-themed advertisements, though, not just ones where Matthew isn’t wearing pants. They could have even tied each one into a different MM movie. That said, I think it’s kind of endearing that Matthew and Camila asked their kids for approval to do a campaign where Daddy is posing (literally) half-naked with Mommy. Those kids are at the ages where they would find this ad campaign funny, although they’re probably like six months out from Levi finding it cringe.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have been friends since they met working on EDtv back in 1997. There’s even rumors (started by Matthew’s mom, Kay) that they’re half-brothers. According to Kay, she and Woody’s dad knew each other biblically during a time period in which Kay and Matthew’s dad were separated. But, really, who knows if there’s really any truth to that? Matthew himself has said that he’s in no rush to take a DNA test to find out if his mom’s telling the truth. Anyway, longtime friends and maybe-brothers Matthew and Woody are currently working on an untitled meta-comedy series, which is described as an “odd-couple love story” between the friends. Each actor will play himself in a scenario in which both of their families “attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.” I’m sure hijinxs will ensure.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to star in a new meta-comedy. The pair is known for their much-praised collaboration on season 1 of HBO’s True Detective, the two actors have been friends for years and have worked together on several films that include Welcome to Hollywood, EDtv, and Surfer, Dude. Their recently-announced project looks to lean into that history in an interesting way.

According to Variety, Harrelson and McConaughey are set to play themselves in a comedy for Apple TV that will center around the duo’s “strange and beautiful bond.” The project, which is so far untitled, comes from creator David West Read. Skydance Television is producing the series, which is executive produced by Read, Harrelson, and McConaughey. Skydance is also behind Foundation, the Apple TV sci-fi drama.

The brief summary of the upcoming comedy describes it as an odd-couple love story, which examines the friendship between the two actors. That friendship is put to the test, however, when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas. The project will run for 10 episodes, which will offer time for the Harrelson and McConaughey bond to build up and deteriorate. So far, no other casting announcements have been revealed.

Honestly, I’m all in on this. I think it can be really fun when actors play exaggerated or fictionalized versions of themselves, like Keanu Reeves in Always Be My Maybe or Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Obviously, the meta-sitcom is not a new concept, (looking at you, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm) but Woody and Matthew seem like two people who are game at poking fun at themselves. They also clearly work and collaborate very well together. Omg, imagine if they recreate the scene where Matthew’s mom told them both that she “knew” Woody’s dad? The awkward comedy of that scene writes itself. Honestly, I’m surprised Steve Martin and Martin Short have never done a series in which they play meta-versions of themselves. But yeah, count me in. I’ll definitely give the McHarrelson show a watch.

Matthew McConaughey is still talking about his mom’s behavior towards his wife Camila Alves when they first started dating. This whole press cycle began when Camila did a podcast interview and shared how Kay McCabe aka Ma Mac, “tested” her when she first started dating Matthew. For example, McCabe would call Camila by Matthew’s ex-girlfriends names and speak to her in broken Spanish, even though her native language is Portuguese. A lot of people did not find this treatment funny and rightfully called it out as abusive. MM tried to do damage control by laughing Ma Mac’s behavior off as a rite of passage in the McConaughey family. Yeah, no one was buying that one either. Now, Matthew is once again defending Kay, framing it as “looking out” for him.

“My family — and part of Camila and I as well — we cherish the value of a sense of humor and comedy,” the Oscar winner said on the “Whine Down with Jana Kramer” podcast Monday while admitting that his mother Mary McCabe’s treatment of Alves when they met had ruffled some feathers.

“Some people were like, ‘Oh, my gosh,’ but … Camila wasn’t wounded about it,” he insisted. “What tickles us may bruise others.”

McConaughey, 53, went on to praise his mom for “looking out for” him when he began his relationship with the now-41-year-old model.

“She was looking out for me,” he said. “She tested my feelings and tested the woman I had the feelings for. Big picture, that’s pretty cool actually.”

When this story first broke, a lot of you shared some really great personal stories about getting along with your in-laws.
