The Golden Bachelor apologizes for saying he won’t date women over 60

Embed from Getty Images

Remember earlier in the summer when Mel Owens, the retired NFL player turned lawyer who’s the next Golden Bachelor for season 2, went on a podcast and declared that he proudly told producers that he would only date women aged between 45 to 60, even though the show is called The Golden Bachelor, and even though Owens is 66? And it didn’t stop there: Owens doubled down that he would cut any contestant over 60, didn’t want anyone with “artificial hips and the wigs,” and was particularly interested in a partner who likes to “work out and stay fit.” What a catch. Well, Owens has seen the error in his views (i.e. friends and show producers yelled at him) and he’s finally issued a public apology… more than a month later. In a newly-released damage control interview with Glamour, Owens addressed the backlash, said that when the series started filming he apologized to the women first thing, and further revealed how the production tried to make lemonade out of sexist, ageist lemons:

He told Glamour that he learned his comments were wrong when a good friend, who was 65 years old, called him out. “She said, ‘What you said was insensitive, and it’s just not who you are.’ My reference of dating was 39, 40 years old. I hadn’t dated in 26, 27 years. That’s what I told her,” he said. “She goes, ‘It doesn’t matter. You’ve said some things that are just incredibly wrong.’ And I go, ‘I’ve got to apologize.’”

Mel explained that his comments about the age range were due to his lack of knowledge about the Bachelor franchise. “I didn’t know anything about the Golden Bachelor ages,” he said.

“I didn’t know the age range because I wasn’t watching it. I’m thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That’s my age range. I’m thinking that’s the gold years for me. My reference, again, was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn’t dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that’s why I said that comment.”

…During filming, Mel said he apologized to the women and took responsibility for his comments. “I apologized to the women on the show. When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, ‘It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.’”

Mel also revealed that some women spoke directly to him about the comments. “During our one-on-ones, 12 or 15 of them said, ‘We appreciate the apology, and it meant a lot to us,’” he said.

According to his interview, the women of the sophomore season even had an opportunity to roast Mel. “One of the dates was a roast. It was brutal. They were killing me,” he said. “One said, ‘Oh, when Mel was walking with me, he was using me as a cane.’ And I’m from Detroit, right? One said, ‘Like a Detroit pizza, he’s doughy, squishy, square, and crusty.’ It was good because I earned that, and I took it and I deserved it, and it landed squarely on me. They were throwing haymakers. It was good.”

[From BuzzFeed]

I fully believe that people should be given the chance to learn and grow from their mistakes. That being said, I’m still getting major BS vibes from Bachelor Mel, largely because of all the holes in his supposed explanation. Taking his arguments from the top: he said he hasn’t dated in a quarter of a century, and when he was dating previously his dates were around 40. And?? How asinine is it to suggest that you didn’t realize you could date someone older than when you last left the dating pool? I thought that was dumb, but then he claimed not to know the Bachelor/Golden Bachelor franchise and the typical age ranges. At best, that reveals that he did no research whatsoever on the show he signed up for, in which case I worry for the clients who use his lawyerly services. But I don’t even think it’s true! Because in the original damning podcast, which, you know, is on record, Owens said the following: “If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them. This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor.” Gee, that sure implies to me he understands the premise of the show! On the positive side, I do think it was clever of the showrunners to build a roast around this steaming pile of sexist, ageist hogwash, and I really hope all the ladies relished their turns to sling it back at him. Like Owens said, he deserved it. Season 2 will premiere September 24 on ABC.

The Golden Bachelor, 66, says he won’t date women over 60 or with hip replacements

Behold: Dudius moronicus. An outlier in Darwin’s acclaimed survival of the fittest theory, this variety of the male species has managed to not only survive, but thrive in the world. Defying all sense of logic, this subset is chiefly characterized by their confidence — communicated loudly and regularly — yet more frequently than not, founded on nothing. Here’s a case study: Mel Owens, 66-year-old male, will be the next Golden Bachelor when the show returns for its sophomore season in the fall. As the title suggests, The Golden Bachelor is a spinoff in the Bachelor franchise dedicated to single 50 and 60-somethings looking for love. But GB Mel seems to think he’s the only one allowed to be of golden years age. He just shot his mouth off on a podcast about how he told producers he, a man of 66, didn’t want to date any women over 60. The more he kept talking, the more asinine it got:

When The Golden Bachelor first debuted two years ago, it was a pretty exciting departure for a franchise whose female winners are rarely over 30. It even inspired some seniors to give dating a shot again — a theme the show heavily leaned into. “It’s never too late to fall in love again,” the first Golden Bachelor, Gerry Turner, told Good Morning America shortly before his season aired.

But apparently that’s not how the show’s newest star sees it. Mel Owens, who will be the titular Golden Bachelor in season two, revealed in an interview earlier this month that he doesn’t want to date any women over 60. Speaking on the University of Michigan football podcast MGoBlue, Owens said producers asked him what his dating preferences were. “So I just said 45 to 60. Just being honest, right?” said Owens, who is 66.

Apparently, that age requirement is strict for Owens, who has been eligible for Social Security for four years now. “I said, ‘If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them. This is not the Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor,’” he recalled telling producers.

Owens said they also must be “fit,” noting that staying in shape is important to him. “And I told them to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs,” he added. Well then!

Pushed by the interviewer on what he was actually looking for, Owens kept it pretty simple. “Well, like I just told you,” he said, adding that he wants someone who is “energetic, a lifetime learner,” and someone who “enjoys to love life,” whatever that means. Oh, yeah, and someone who likes to “work out and stay fit,” he reiterated, in case that wasn’t clear the first time.

It’s a pretty cold outlook for a show explicitly created for “senior men and women looking for love.” There’s no specific age range required to be on the show, but most states define “senior” as over the age of 65 — which, again, Owens himself is. In the show’s first season, no contestant was younger than 60, and the oldest were 75.

[From The Cut]

What a tool! What a jackass! Pardon my swearing, but, you know, “Just being honest, right?” He makes Martha Stewart appear almost classy in her retort that she’d never do The Golden Bachelorette because the guys weren’t hot enough. Hotness can be judged at any age! And I must second The Cut’s question: WTF does “enjoys to love life,” mean? I guess Mel isn’t a “lifetime learner” himself, at least not when it comes to syntax. I am so utterly and thoroughly icked out by this Neanderthal. Interviewer: “What kind of love are you looking for from this experience?” Mel: “Woman. Fit. Young. Fit. Exercise. Fit. CAN’T BE MY AGE.” The man has well and truly shown himself, and I seriously hope it torpedoes the casting process currently underway. (But I’m not holding my breath, either.) When Rosie covered Jazzy Collins the other day, a reality TV casting director, (who is not working on TGB), Jazzy noted that authenticity is what they’re looking for in audition tapes, even if you’re authentically the “villain.” Was that the play with casting Mel Owens? Cause the one thing I’ll give him credit for, is that he is being genuinely himself; an honest d-ckhead.

White Lotus creator Mike White is returning to Survivor for Survivor 50

It’s been more than a year in the making, but the cast list for Survivor 50 dropped on Wednesday. From the moment that Jeff announced that it was going to be an all-returnee season, Survivor Twitter blew up and former players started politicking. Production capitalized on fan interest by allowing votes on things like whether there should be idols. I wondered if we were being set up for another season where fans get to vote on who will return, but alas, the actual players were not “in the hands of the fans.”

Now that the list is officially out, it’s pretty wild, spanning from players from the first two seasons (Jenna Lewis-Dougherty and Colby Donaldson) all the way to a whopping three players from the most recent season (Kyle, Kamilla, and Joe). There’ve been a lot of very passionate reactions over the cast, but one of the contestants who viewers are universally looking forward to seeing play again is White Lotus creator Mike White. Mike first played on season 37, David vs. Goliath.

Survivor normally waits until about a month before a season premieres to officially reveal its cast, but nothing is normal about what will be the landmark 50th installment of the reality competition series.

Though Survivor 50 will not hit TV screens until 2026, and the full cast for the season that airs before it (Survivor 49) has yet to be revealed outside of a teaser video, host and showrunner Jeff Probst announced the Survivor 50 cast on Wednesday’s episode of CBS Mornings.

The supersized group of 24 people marks the biggest batch of contestants yet, and it features players going all the way back to season 1 of Survivor: Borneo (Jenna Lewis-Dougherty) as well as two yet unnamed competitors from Survivor 49 , which just filmed a few weeks ago and will air this fall on CBS.

The cast also features two legends competing for the fifth time, Cirie Fields and Ozzy Lusth. That will tie them with Boston Rob Mariano, who also played the game five times (and appeared as a non-competing mentor on a sixth season).

And non-Survivor fans will notice a very famous face returning to the franchise: The White Lotus creator Mike White will compete alongside two of his David vs. Goliath castmates, including one of whom he cast for season 2 of the hit HBO series, Angelina Keeley.

While the cast hails from all the way back to the show’s beginning, there is definitely an emphasis on the most recent seasons. Five of the players come from seasons 48 and 49, while 11 of the 24 Survivor 50 castaways are from the past five seasons, including the only two winners, Dee Valladares (Survivor 45) and Kyle Fraser (Survivor 48).

There are also no contestants who competed for the very first time between seasons 19 and 31, with the entire cast first gracing our screens either before or after Survivor’s middle era.

Realizing the full cast was going to leak anyway, CBS decided for the first time since 2015’s Survivor: Cambodia — Second Chance, which featured players voted in by fans, to announce the cast before filming began. Although viewers could not vote players in for season 50 like they did for Cambodia, they were able to vote on several key elements of the game this spring. Those closely guarded results will now be put into action when filming begins for Survivor 50.

[From Entertainment Weekly]

When rumored cast lists started dropping over the last few days, I stayed spoiler-free. I’d heard who wasn’t returning, but not who would be. I’m surprised that Mike White is coming back, but only because he’s so busy right now. Apparently, he texted Jeff and said that he wanted in. White Lotus viewers, welcome to the party. There are also two other players returning for the first time from his season: Dr. Christian Hubicki, who had a cameo on the third season of White Lotus, and Angelina Keeley. I’m really curious to know what Mike’s dynamic will be now that WL has hit it big. Will other players see him as a threat or will they target the bigger names, like Colby, Aubry Bracco, and Cirie Fields?

They definitely had to make the announcement because of all the loose lips out there. When Jesse Lopez, Carolyn Wiger, and Jerri Manthey all confirmed that they were cut, there was a huge uproar. Abi-Maria Gomes posted to Instagram on Tuesday to announce how disappointed she was at being a last-minute cut. My thoughts? I don’t need to see Ozzy, Colby, or Aubry play again. I love Cirie, but we don’t need her, either. Same with Coach. I am shocked that Jesse and other New Era (S41-present) players like Shan Smith and Ricard Foye were cut. This may be controversial because I like them both, but Dee and Kyle have already won. Why not give those spots to non-winners? Who I am excited to see back: Charlie, Kamilla, Emily Flippin(!!), and my girl Genevieve. I’m also curious to see if the show will go back to its 36 day format. 24 castaways is a lot for a 26-game season. Finally, I’m still waiting for that season of all first boots. Don’t make us wait until 60, Jeff.

Here’s the video of Jeff announcing the cast. It’s dorky, but I can’t hate on it too much

Survivor fans think the season 48 ending was spoiled by a careless teaser (spoilers)

Embed from Getty Images

The season finale of Survivor’s 48th season aired last night. Going into any finale, there are usually two contestants that are edited as potential winners. This season, fans were split between whether challenge beast Joe would win his way into the Final 3 by sweeping the remaining immunity challenges or if Kyle, one-half of the season’s strategic duo, would emerge victorious. Well, CBS took away some of the suspense away from viewers. In a promo that first aired over the weekend, it revealed at least one spoiler and potentially another one. In one clip, Mitch is clearly visible on the jury, which means he does not make it to the final three. Another clip showed Kamilla with the immunity necklace around her neck.

Survivor fans may have outwit, outlast, and outplayed the show’s editors.

Ahead of the reality competition series’ season 48 finale May 21—which will see Joe Hunter, Eva Erickson, Kyle Fraser, Kamilla Karthigesu and Mitch Guerra go head-to-head—viewers have started to suspect CBS accidentally gave away the ending. In a sneak peek shared ahead of the finale, two subtle details seemed to point to a few obvious predictions.

In one clip, Mitch seemed to be walking among a few members of the ousted jury members.

“If you zoom in, it’s very clearly Mitch,” one viewer pointed out on TikTok. “We all expected that, but the fact that they literally spoiled it in a promo is wild.”

And while some fans think this is a clear indicator that Mitch will be eliminated, others suspect that the show’s producers are just trying to throw viewers off.

“A part of me thinks this might still be a fake out,” one user wrote on X. “It’s just rlly funny.”

Fans pointed out another spoiler with Kamilla, who was seen wearing an immunity necklace, which would mean Kamilla is among the final three contenders to win the million-dollar prize.

“It aligns with my guesses and what I hoped to see, but come on Survivor,” another user wrote on X May 19. “I’m at least happy not to know which challenge Kamilla wins immunity for.”

[From E! News Online]

While everyone basically accepted the Mitch clip, there was some doubt about Kamilla’s placing heading into the finale. We know now that both clips were spoilery, but to be fair, Mitch going home at final 5 wasn’t really a spoiler to anyone paying attention all season. He didn’t get a lot of screen time post-merge other than to drop a few confessionals about how now was the time to finally make a move. Kamilla winning immunity WAS a huge spoiler. I was at a finale party at a friend’s house and it did kind of ruin the moment for most of us who had seen the promo because her come-from-waaaaay-behind win was pretty epic.

That said, those spoilers were revealed within the first hour of a three-hour finale, so there was still more competition to go. In the end, Kyle emerged victorious while the biggest shocker was Joe finishing in third. I think the biggest spoiler for me happened during Final Tribal Council. As soon as Kamilla mouthed to Kyle, ”I got you” right before that mic-drop question-and-answer, I just knew that he was going to win. Shauhin’s vigorous nodding was a dead giveaway as well. I’m really happy that Kyle won and have so much respect for Kamilla for not being bitter, and choosing to advocate for him instead.

Survivor Season 48 features the first openly autistic contestant

Season 48 of Survivor premiered with a two-hour episode on Wednesday night. After this week’s premiere, two players in particular really stood out as people to root for, and that was Eva Erickson and Joe Hunter. There have been a lot of “firsts” in this new era of Survivor, and the very-inspirational Eva is the first openly autistic contestant to play the game. Eva, who is a 24-year-old PhD student at Brown University, was diagnosed when she was a year old. Doctors told her parents that she would never live on her own, have a job, or even marry anyone who wasn’t also on the spectrum. Eva and her parents fought hard to overcome some of her more extreme diagnoses, and now she’s not only on Survivor, but also has the honor of having been the first and only female player on the Georgia Tech men’s hockey team. To quote a former Survivor player, she’s basically a bad ass.

A Brown University student is making television history as the first openly autistic person to compete on “Survivor.” Eva Erickson will be trying her hand at the $1 million grand prize in Season 48.

“When I finally got the call, I was running around the room like a dog,” she said. “Just jumping off the walls, like, oh my God, I’m going to be on ‘Survivor!’”

The 24-year-old was diagnosed with autism when she was just a year old.

“The first doctors were telling my parents that I would never hold a job, I would never live independently, that at most they could hope that I would marry someone else also on the autism spectrum,” she told 12 News.

Now, Erickson is living thousands of miles away from her home in Minnesota. She is also getting her PhD in engineering at Brown University, where she is the captain of the club hockey team. Not to mention, she is competing in one of the most cutthroat reality competition shows on television.

“Knowing that ‘Survivor’ is a game of lying, people are always going to be lying, and I might not pick up on the same cues as everyone else,” she said. “That was something that I was very concerned about but that’s where I knew I wanted my strategy to involve having really strong alliances.”

Erickson has now embraced her autism as a gift. She hopes by sharing her story on “Survivor,” other people on the spectrum can do the same.

“Autism can be a benefit to you, you don’t have to see it as something wrong with you, accept who you are and that’s how you can be your best self,” she says.

Erickson is selling merchandise with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Minnesota Special Hockey.

[From WPRI]

Eva is incredibly inspirational. I’m in a Survivor fantasy league and put her high on my rankings list. I’m rooting for her so hard! While Eva was very open about her autism in her pre-season interviews and during her talking heads, she admitted that her lack of ability to understand when someone was lying to her would cause her fellow castaways to take advantage of her. So, she decided to confide in just one teammate, Joe. Joe, who is a fire captain and dad-of-two, was already vibing with fans because in his pre-season press, he shared that he’s playing the game in honor of his late sister, Joanna. Joanna always wanted to be on the show, but was the victim of domestic violence in 2011. Eva sensed that he was a safe space and opened up to him. It resulted in an incredibly moving scene that left Joe and basically all of the viewers in tears. He even said that if it came to it, he’d sacrifice his own game for her. Same, Joe, same. I’m rooting for both Eva and Joe to go really far into the game.

Here’s the scene where Eva confides in Joe about her autism and asks him to help keep her grounded in the event that she gets overstimulated. It’s really moving, so grab your tissues.

Anna Delvey Dancing with the Stars Reality Shows

DWTS pro Ezra Sosa got a ‘nothing’ tattoo in honor of Anna Delvey

Almost two weeks ago, Anna Delvey and her dance partner, first-year pro Ezra Sosa, were one of the first two couples eliminated from Dancing with the Stars. Anna’s behavior since then has been just as snotty and tacky as you’d expect. When asked by host Julianne Hough what she’d take away from the experience, she replied, “Nothing!” In a subsequent exit interview with Sosa for Good Morning America, Anna said that her favorite part of doing DWTS was being voted out.

Given the uproar that followed, I think Anna realized that she’d found a new way to stay in the headlines and extend her notoriety: Just talk sh-t about the show and people will pay attention. Last week, she laughably called the show “predatory.” Meanwhile, Ezra was apparently taken by Anna and is trying to help spin her snotty response as “ironic.” He even got a tattoo of the word “nothing” to commemorate his first-ever partner and the whole experience.

Anna Delvey took “nothing” from her Dancing with the Stars experience, but it’s now immortalized on show partner Ezra Sosa’s body! The dance pro got the 33-year-old convicted con artist’s memorable — and controversial — final comment on the competition reality series inked on his body, he revealed in a TikTok on Saturday, Oct. 5.

He debuted the upper back tattoo — “nothing” in cursive above a “33” to mark season 33 — while lip-syncing along to the now-infamous moment. In the caption, Sosa poked fun at his decision to get the one-word reply inked, writing, “[I’m] such an idiot.”

Delvey replied with a similarly blunt response, commenting, “Exactly.”

Sosa’s new Delvey tribute ink comes less than two weeks after he and the controversial contestant were eliminated.

Right after their elimination was announced, Sosa appeared shocked by his partner’s reply, raising his eyebrows in surprise. As demonstrated by his new ink, however, the dancer later told PEOPLE he thinks Delvey’s reaction was “iconic.”

“I was — I’m not going to lie — I was a little nervous [about] what she was going to say,” he recalled. “But with what she said, I think it was very iconic.”

Sosa said he is “really happy with how [Delvey] ended [her run on the show]” because she stayed true to herself throughout the experience. “With me being her partner on the show, I wanted her to show different sides of herself to America, but also I don’t want her to ever change who she is, because I really think she’s so brilliant and everything,” he said.

The DWTS pro also recalled that he could tell in the moment that Delvey was “livid” when they were not announced as being “safe” from elimination — and revealed that the duo has kept in touch since, both in and outside of TikTok comments.

“We’re texting every day,” he told PEOPLE. “Yes, we are. She’s like, ‘You have to come to New York!’ And I was like, ‘Do you miss me?’ She goes, ‘Sure.’ But every single time she says sure it means yes.”

“Like, I kind of have her down a little bit,” he explained.

[From People]

Look, I totally get wanting to mark a special or particularly memorable occasion with a tattoo, but goodness, this is a wild one. I could understand him doing it if it also wasn’t tied into them being so friendly. You know, like getting one tattoo for each season on the show that basically wraps it up in a nutshell. Like a tattoo scrapbook, if you will. But with Anna involved, it just feels kinda ick, right? It’s almost as though she’s hustling him to feed her ego through all of the texting and convincing him that he knows her so well. Ezra seems like such a decent person that is just getting carried away with the excitement and momentum of his first go-round as a pro partner. Run, Ezra, run! Hopefully, he’ll look back at that tattoo several seasons from now and it will be one of many that include a #1 place trophy.

Anna Delvey: DWTS exploited me for attention, it was predatory

Embed from Getty Images

Last week, Anna Delvey and her dance partner, Ezra Sosa, were one of the first two couples eliminated on this season of Dancing With the Stars (the other couple was Tori Spelling and Pasha Pashkov). Anna’s brief time on the show was controversial, from her bedazzled ICE-mandated ankle monitor to her lackluster performances and snotty exit interviews. Not to mention that everyone was wondering why a convicted felon on house arrest who was facing deportation was even invited on as a contestant in the first place.

Anna claimed that she wanted to reinvent herself and change people’s minds about her, but she’s been doing a pretty crap job at the follow-through. So far, she’s told Julianne Hough that she would take “nothing” away from her DWTS experience and Good Morning America that “getting eliminated” was her favorite part about the show. For her latest trick, Anna spoke with NBC News to accuse DWTS of being “predatory” and “exploiting” her for attention. LMAO.

She feels like the show “used” her for ratings: “I feel that the show so obviously used me to drive up the ratings, that they never had any plans to give me any chance to grow and only cared about exploiting me for attention,” Sorokin wrote in an email. “It was predatory of them to try [to] make me feel inadequate and stupid all while I did get progressively better yet they chose to disregard that.”

Life’s not fair, babe: “It felt like I was never really given a fair chance by the viewers or some of the judges’ given their nonsensical scoring. It’s supposed to be a dance competition and not a popularity contest.”

She had hesitations: To join the show, which Sorokin admitted she was “hesitant” about, she had to get permission from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to compete in Los Angeles, far outside her 75-mile house arrest radius based in New York.

The One Where Viewers Read Her for Filth: Viewers immediately expressed outrage when ABC announced that the “notorious ankle bracelet fashionista” would appear on the show’s 33rd season, demanding the network “stop glorifying” a felon. “DWTS” alum and choreographer Maksim Chmerkovskiy called her a “professional liar” and mocked her dancing on a TMZ podcast. “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg lamented that Sorokin received “special treatment” from the government to compete. Sorokin said the backlash over her casting made her realize “how easily people will judge you without getting to know you or the true facts of your story.”

Showrunner Conrad Green on Anna’s casting: “Anna is fascinating to a lot of people… so I think there is an inherent curiosity about her,” Green said. “She’s a very valid and interesting part of that cast. Yes, she had the issues she’s had, but we’ve had other people on the show who’ve had criminal issues in the past.”

The double standard of it all: Sorokin also noted that convicted felons have appeared on the show and were not similarly shamed. “I’m trying to start a new chapter moving past mistakes I made and regret when I was much younger. Not sure when people will finally afford me that second chance and stop persecuting me so I have the opportunity to move on with my life.”

On crying when people were mean about her first dance: “I hadn’t been on social media in over seven years. I felt good after my first dance but was not prepared for the hatred directed at me online and just how mean-spirited people can be hiding behind their keyboards,” she said of her emotional reaction.

She’s not watching the show: Sorokin said she probably won’t keep up with the show as it continues, but she hopes actor Reginald VelJohnson will win. “I don’t watch TV,” she added.

[From NBC]

OMG. “They used me for ratings” is just laughable on so many levels. First of all, Anna’s whole thing is being predatory and using people for gain. Sorry you got a taste of your own medicine, babe! Second of all, DUH. Of course they cast her for ratings. They literally cast everyone on those shows because they think they’ll be a good mix of both well-liked and controversial figures to entice viewers to tune in and root for or against them! Do you think they cast Pommel Horse Guy (who is awesome BTW) because he’s just another charming face? No! It’s because he went viral! Goodness, Anna, girl, you know how the game is played! She’s just mad that she lost and is throwing a hissy fit to stay in the news. It’s just funny that she doesn’t realize that none of this is doing anything to actually endear herself to anyone. She should take the $125,000 she made for being on two episodes and use it on lawyer’s fees or whatever.
