Sophie Turner has reportedly been cast as Lara Croft in Prime’s new series?

For years, Amazon Prime has been trying to pull together a series based on the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider video game. The game/IP was already adapted in two films starring Angelina Jolie, and one 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander as Lara. For some reason, I thought Vikander’s turn as Croft was a flop, but I just checked the box office and it made $274 million worldwide, not too shabby with a $90 million budget. Still, within the cultural zeitgeist, Angelina Jolie is the actress more closely associated with Lara Croft, and the 2001 film also made $274 million worldwide. Well, like Spider-Man, they’re just going to keep rebooting this property, and reportedly, Sophie Turner has been cast as the new Lara.

Sophie Turner has been tapped to play Lara Croft in an upcoming streaming adaptation of Tomb Raider and a source exclusively tells Life & Style the Game of Thrones alum is throwing herself into the project and giving it everything she has to try to top the original actress who brought the character to life almost 25 years ago, Angelina Jolie.

Amazon greenlit the Tomb Raider television series earlier this year, but the insider, who is familiar with the project on the streaming giant’s side, dishes, “This show is a little further along than has been reported in the press so far and some of the scripts that have come in are so good you could just break them out and turn them into full blown blockbuster movies on their right.”

With anticipation building, the production company isn’t cutting any corners to make sure it doesn’t fall flat, as video game adaptations have been hit or miss recently. “It’s going to be a cool show,” the source assures. “It’s going to be gritty and violent and it’s going to please the old school fans of the property.” Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be heading the project as writer and producer and the lead role has finally been given to Sophie, 29, after a few months of rumors swirling around casting.

“Sophie is going to town with the training for this movie, and she’s already extremely experienced with screen combat, stunts, and extreme costumes and special effects, thanks to her years in the Game of Thrones and X-Men universes,” the insider adds. “But she’s getting into even better shape for this job, and sharpening all of her skill sets.”

Without a doubt, Sophie is taking notes from Angie’s prep. “She absolutely loves what Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander did with their films, but she wants to equal that work and, over the course of many years-slash-seasons, top it,” the source adds. “Sophie is actually the first English actress to play Lara Croft in live action. That’s a big deal and Sophie knows that gives her a special edge compared to Angelina and Alicia.”

[From Life & Style]

I didn’t think about the fact that, if true, Sophie would be the first English actress to portray Croft. I’m actually okay with this casting? Sophie is tall and it feels like she could really get buff and do some good stunt work. One of my issues with Vikander was that I just thought she was way too small and delicate-looking to play Croft. The character needs someone who looks physically tough and tomboy-ish, and I think Sophie could pull that off. Now, all that being said, I bet Prime still finds a way to f–k it up.

Sophie Turner: ‘After the Uvalde shooting, I knew it was time to get the f–k out’

Sophie Turner covers one of Harper’s Bazaar UK’s Woman of the Year issues. Sophie has had a notable year, which started when she and Joe Jonas separated last year, then filed for divorce, which then briefly became a really major international custodial dispute over their two daughters. They agreed to mediation in New York, and quickly worked out a temporary and then permanent custodial situation, and Sophie now lives full-time in the UK. In 2024, she’s been working non-stop and enjoying a romance with a British aristocrat. She spoke about all of this and more with Bazaar:

What went wrong in her marriage to Joe: “I’m going through a legal process right now where I can’t really say much, but it was incredibly sad. We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard.”

She’s happy to be back in England: “I’m so happy to be back. It felt as if my life was on pause until I returned to England. I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long – six years – and it was when my friends were getting engaged, and when I got pregnant. I went for dinner with someone the other day, and she said, ‘I never got to touch your belly.’ We didn’t have those key experiences with each other.”

She suffered from homesickness in America: “Every city we ended up in, the first thing I’d do was find a British shop and stock up on a month’s worth of chocolate” – but it was the politics that she found hardest to cope with. “The gun violence, Roe v Wade being overturned… Everything just kind of piled on. After the Uvalde [school] shooting, I knew it was time to get the f–k out of there.”

Motherhood: “[It] changed me so much in every way. Before I had kids, I was very depressed and anxious, and I would isolate [myself] a lot. Now, I think I live my life for them. I want them to see me having a social life and enjoying work and thriving in my career and relationships. I want them to see a hard-working mum. I’ll come back and say, ‘This is why Mummy was away – it’s because she’s doing this for you, so Father Christmas can come with a big bundle of presents.’”

Child stardom: “At that age, all I knew was I wanted to act. I didn’t even think about my weight or how I looked, it was just, ‘This is fun, I get to play every day.’ I learnt far too young what I’m supposed to look like, and how I’m supposed to behave. I think that’s how child stars end up being so messed up, because they’re not allowed to make mistakes, and therefore they’re not allowed to grow…”

She developed bulimia, then anorexia in her teens: “What a whopper of an eating disorder that was! It still affects me. I don’t think it ever leaves you, I think you just try to learn to manage it. If I see a plate of food, I still feel a little bit of dread. But the great thing about being a mother is that I get to teach my kids how to have a healthy relationship with their bodies, which feels like a justice to myself.”

She’s still tight with her Game of Thrones friends: “I went from 13 to 23 on that show – it was my whole childhood. We’re all still on a massive group chat, and we try and meet each other whenever we’re in the same country… they’re family.” She is planning to get the fading dire-wolf tattoo on her arm re-inked. “That will stay forever. I wish it wasn’t so massive, but you make mistakes, don’t you?”

Her romantic life: Since the end of last year, she has been dating Peregrine Pearson, who is in line to become the 5th Viscount of Cowdray. “We’re very happy,” she says, blushing, when I ask how it’s going. “It came around very quickly. I just needed to go on a date to know how to do it again. That was the first date and the last date, and it’s been great.” What’s he like? “He’s lovely. He’s funny, and he brings out the cheeky side of me, the fun side. He lights me back up.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar UK]

It’s amazing to see how much she’s blossomed since returning to the UK – when she lived in America, she rarely went out for anything other than Joe’s events, she didn’t work much, and I think Joe really encouraged her to be a stay-at-home mom. I wonder about what looks like a 50/50 custody split and whether they can make that work internationally forever, but I appreciate that she’s not airing all of that in the media. Maybe it will change, maybe it won’t. I also get why she felt like she needed to leave the US, and I bet that was magnified so much during the pandemic and during the Trump administration.

Sophie Turner is in negotiations to play Lara Croft in Amazon Prime’s series

For years, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has had an extremely lucrative development deal with Amazon Prime, a deal which has yielded next to nothing. One of the reasons why Prime kept pouring money into Waller-Bridge’s coffers (something like $120 million thus far) is because they wanted to eventually get Phoebe to develop a series based on the Lara Croft video game. Lara Croft has been adapted for films – notably with Angelina Jolie as Lara, and not so notably with Alicia Vikander in the role – and I guess Lara has become the new Spider-Man, in that every generation gets a new one. Well, Waller-Bridge is finally putting it together… with Sophie Turner as Lara.

Sophie Turner is in negotiations to star as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, Prime Video’s high-profile series adaptation of the video game franchise from Emmy-winning Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, sources tell Deadline. A rep for Amazon MGM Studios declined comment.

As we reported exclusively last month, the Game Of Thrones alumna was among the actresses who tested for the high-profile role, previously played on the big screen by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. Tomb Raider, which Amazon MGM Studios Head Jennifer Salke called “epic” and “globe-trotting” while announcing the series order in May, has been a passion project for writer/executive producer Waller-Bridge, who spoke fondly of the title character at the time of the pickup.

“Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” she said in May.

Tomb Raider is executive produced by Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel, and rights holders Legendary Television as well as Crystal Dynamics. Greenblatt and Andolina are consulting producers under their Star Party banner. The series is produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.

Turner, an Emmy nominee for her first major role as Sansa Stark on Game Of Thrones, currently headlines the British crime drama limited series Joan and next stars in another British show, Haven, for Prime Video, home of the Tomb Raider series. She is repped by CAA, Independent Talent, and Hansen Jacobson Teller.

[From Deadline]

This would be the first time Lara Croft, a canonically English character, would be played by an English actress. For that alone, I think it’s an interesting choice. I also think Sophie would do a decent-to-good job, although it remains to be seen if she plans to do the stunt work. I honestly think Sophie would play Lara more like Angelina played her – arch, playful, badass. Are the fan-boys freaking out? I don’t have a sense of whether Lara Croft is still one of the characters the younger guys care about?

Sophie Turner is doing aristocratic shooting weekends with her new boyfriend

Sophie Turner has apparently been dating Peregrine Pearson since October, at least that’s when they were first photographed together in Paris. Some thought it could be a simple hookup/rebound, but it looks like Sophie is really dating this guy. He’s a British aristocrat, heir to the Viscount Cowdray and considered one of the most eligible bachelors in the UK. They’re now pap-strolling and being open about their relationship. Now Sophie and Peregrine’s new love is being covered by the Mail’s Eden Confidential column:

She made her name as noblewoman Sansa Stark in drama Game Of Thrones, so perhaps it’s not surprising Sophie Turner is adjusting to life among the aristocracy.

Having split up with American pop star Joe Jonas, with whom she has two children, earlier this year, the actress is now going out with Peregrine Pearson, Viscount Cowdray’s son and heir. And Turner, 27, joined Perry, 29, and his upper-class chums for a shooting weekend at the Duke of Marlborough’s Blenheim Palace estate in Oxfordshire.

Wearing green wellies and clutching a champagne flute, she mixed with her boyfriend’s pals including the Marquess of Blandford, George, who will inherit Blenheim. Others include George’s wife, Camilla, his cousin Alexander Spencer-Churchill and their friend Lady Jemima Herbert.

[From The Daily Mail]

I keep thinking about how much sh-t Sophie talked about America and how much she hated the food, the schools, the humor, the entire city of LA, all of it. She was desperate to move back to the UK for years, and now that she has, she’s… hanging out with the aristocracy and all of her royalist buddies. As I said in a previous post, her American adventure was just a blip – she’s back to her snooty British roots and she’s done with America.

Sophie Turner really is dating Peregrine Pearson, heir to the Viscount Cowdray

At the end of October, Sophie Turner magically appeared at the Rugby World Cup final in Paris – she was part of the trophy presentation as part of her brand-ambassadorship with Louis Vuitton. People were like “wow, I hope she enjoyed her weekend in Paris?” She did – that same weekend, photographers caught her snogging a British aristocrat named Peregrine Pearson, heir to the Viscount Cowdray. Pearson is considered to be one of the most eligible bachelors in the UK, and he split with “Princess” Maria-Olympia around the same time as Sophie and Joe Jonas were working out their divorce in mediation. Some people wondered if Sophie and Peregrine were just a hookup situation, a quick rebound for both of them. Looks like they’re really dating though.

Sophie Turner is enjoying her casual romance with Peregrine “Perry” John Dickinson Pearson as a newly single woman. The “Game of Thrones” star, who split from estranged husband Joe Jonas in September, has been on the market and “casually dating a few people” since she and the singer split up, a source told Us Weekly.

Per the insider, Turner “really seems to like spending time with Perry” as the two have “become progressively closer.”

While the source told the outlet that it is “too soon to tell if there’s long term potential,” they speculated that “things might be headed that way.”

Turner was first linked to Pearson — heir to the 4th Viscount Cowdray, a county in Sussex — in late October when the two were spotted locking lips in Paris.

The two have since gotten more bold about their romance and were spotted packing on the PDA on Friday. In the photos, the British aristocrat and Turner shared a kiss while wrapped in each other’s arms during a stroll in London. The casual couple kept close during their daytime walk, grinning from ear to ear and holding hands when they were embracing each other.

The photos are linked below – they definitely weren’t hiding, and they want people to know that they’re dating. Before all of this, I don’t think I realized that Sophie is posh? Like, she’s a royalist who is banging British nobility. It might turn out that Sophie’s whole “married to a Jonas brother” American adventure was just a blip and she’s gone back to her posh roots permanently now. I definitely can’t see her with another American.

Priyanka Chopra & Sophie Turner unfollowed each other on Instagram

When Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’s divorce spilled out all over the gossip pages, I was surprised by how many people name-checked Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. People were saying “Priyanka better watch what happened to Sophie” and “will Nick and Priyanka divorce next?” While I’ve always found Priyanka and Nick to be an odd couple, Priyanka’s recent interviews have seemed a lot different – welcoming their daughter Malti and going through months of NICU medical drama actually strengthened Nick and Priyanka’s marriage. I think. I could be wrong, but the vibe between them seems like they’re doing well. I also think Nick is “the cute one,” the one most women crush on, and so they’re actually rooting for Nick and Priyanka to divorce.

For years, the Jonas wives tried to get along, to strange results. Priyanka and Sophie seemed to make an effort with each other for a time, but I’ll buy the idea that they were never that close. So this news comes as little surprise – Sophie has apparently unfollowed Pri.

Sophie Turner appears determined for a clean break — and not just from her husband. The “Game of Thrones” star has spent the last month publicly navigating her divorce with singer Joe Jonas, and has now unfollowed her soon-to-be-ex-sister-in-law, Priyanka Chopra, on Instagram.

The “Quantico” alum, who married Nick Jonas in 2018, is no longer following Turner, either. It’s not clear who unfollowed whom first, or what wrought the mutual unfollowing.

Their digital dissolution has left fans on either side confused, as the self-described “J Sisters” previously appeared as close as actual siblings.

Turner, who still follows Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas on Instagram, once raved about Chopra.

“It’s also nice to have built-in girlfriends who are actually really cool, who I can hang out with and we can really talk to each other about, like, how crazy the boys’ lives are,” Turner told Elle in 2020. “We can relate on so many different levels. It’s like, thank God.”

[From HuffPo]

My guess is that it was one of two scenarios – either Priyanka didn’t advocate for Sophie within the Jonas family OR they had a falling out long before all of this and the divorce was just a convenient time to unfollow. Reportedly – I think it came from Us Weekly? – Priyanka didn’t want to take sides in Sophie and Joe’s divorce, and I could totally see Sophie holding a grudge. Or like I said, they never even got along that well in the first place. I’d love to know the backstory though. I feel like Priyanka has some good Jonas family gossip too.

Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas have come to ‘an amicable resolution’ in their divorce

Last week, we heard that Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas had agreed to go into mediation to try to work out the terms of their divorce. In September, Joe filed for divorce in Florida, where they lived and had a home up until early this year. Weeks later, Sophie sued Joe in a New York court, saying that he had abducted their children, refused to relinquish their passports and that the girls need to return with her to the UK. It was set to be a catastrophically messy and international custodial battle, but the fact that they agreed to the mediation and agreed to some temporary terms laid out by the New York court seemed like good first steps. As it turns out, their mediation went really well and they’re likely about to sign an agreement. TMZ had details about the immediate custodial framework for the rest of the year:

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have struck a deal in their divorce case — and it sounds like they’re both on the same page. As we reported, Joe and Sophie were hashing out the terms of their divorce during 3 days of mediation last week.

There is a prenup, so it looks like assets were not a big issue. The bigger issue, of course, was child custody. Sophie wanted the kids to live with her in the UK, and Joe wanted them to stay with him in the U.S.

According to settlement docs, obtained by TMZ, “an amicable resolution on all issues between them is forthcoming.” Translation — they’re super close to signing a settlement.

In the meantime, they have agreed to a temporary child custody agreement. Under the terms, the 2 kids — ages 1 and 3 — will be with Sophie from October 9 through October 21. During that time, she’s allowed to travel with them to the UK. On October 21, Sophie must return with the kids to the U.S., where Joe will then take them through November 2.

The kids will then go back to Sophie until November 22. Joe gets them on that day and will presumably spend Thanksgiving with them. The kids go back to mom on December 16, where they will stay until January 7. So she gets them for XMAS and New Year’s. Sounds like a final settlement is looming.

[From TMZ]

This kind of custodial framework will only “work” while their daughters are young. Once they get to school age, it’s highly unlikely that either parent would agree to a two-weeks in the UK, two weeks in the US pattern. So, while I’m glad that mediation worked well for them for the time being, I’m not sure if they’ve actually come up with long-term solutions. It also strikes me that Sophie and Joe are both wondering if the other will relent about their (separate) living situations. Sophie might be going into this thinking that Joe will eventually buy a home in London, and Joe might believe that Sophie will eventually want to move back to the US.
