Leah Remini shades Laura Prepon for not speaking out against Scientology

Leah Remini hosts the People Puzzler game show, which is why she is doing the promotional rounds currently. She called in to Daily Blast Live to talk about the show but was asked first about fellow ex-Scientologist Laura Prepon. Laura admitted in August that she had not “practiced Scientology in five years.” At the time, Kaiser noted how well-chosen Laura’s words were about the cult and speculated it was likely to avoid consequences from CoS. On Tuesday, Leah confirmed that. Leah claimed Laura wasn’t using her voice to fight back against CoS and it was probably to avoid Fair Game, the practices carried out against CoS’ enemies. However, Leah went on to say she doesn’t respect Laura’s lack of action. She thinks ex members need to fight the cult because of the harm they did while members.

Leah Remini is explaining why she had issues with how Laura Prepon handled her exit from the Church of Scientology.

During a video interview with Daily Blast Live posted to YouTube on Tuesday, Sept. 28, Leah, 51, was asked about the That ’70s Show alum stating last month that she was no longer associated with Scientology. In her response, Leah said she thought the 41-year-old actress could have more effectively used her platform to help others. After all, Leah, who was a lifelong Scientology member before exiting in 2013, has become known for speaking out against the Church.

Leah told the outlet she “reached out” to Laura to express this, but added that “not everybody who has a voice uses it.” The King of Queens star went on to say she herself felt she had a responsibility to become an outspoken critic of the organization after having actively helped to recruit members for many years.

“I got people into Scientology—I promoted it most of my life,” Leah shared. “For those of us who were in the public eye and who were speaking on behalf of Scientology, getting people into Scientology, I feel that we have a responsibility to do the work when we find out that none of those things we were doing was not only [not] helpful, but damaging and very harmful to people’s lives.”

Leah, whose Emmy-winning series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath ran for three seasons, said “not everybody feels that they have a responsibility” to be so vocal about the alleged harm Leah feels the Church has caused.

“Some people, like Laura, feel they don’t have a responsibility to speak out,” she continued. “Do I respect it? I mean, not really.”

[From E News]

I am posting the clip below. It’s queued up to the CoS discussion. To me, the excerpt doesn’t read as adamant as Leah was about Laura’s silence. Once again, I admire Leah’s frankness. It’s refreshing to hear someone speak their truth in Hollywood. As for what she’s saying, I have no idea how CoS works. I got the impression that some members weren’t privileged to much information about what was going on. And when I read Laura talk about her departure, I assumed shejust didn’t know enough to hurt the church and that’s why they left her alone. But Leah would know, obviously. So her anger tells me Laura’s silence is something else.

However, if Laura is protecting something, or even still processing and deprogramming, then maybe she still needs time to join the fight. And she should be allowed that time. But I would think Leah would know this as well. I feel like there is a lot in what Leah isn’t saying. She wouldn’t have put Laura on blast if there wasn’t a reason for it. I’m not saying it was the right reason, but there was definitely a reason. I think it’s personal.

Laura Prepon ‘feels relieved to be living life on her own terms,’ post-Scientology

Laura Prepon at 'The Girl On The Train' New York Premiere

Several years ago, there was a flurry of terrible stories about Scientology and particular Scientologists. Leah Remini has done great work exposing CoS and giving a platform to people who have left the cult. But it does feel like in the past two years or so, there’s been less conversation about how CoS is actually a dangerous cult, right? People forget, people move on, and suddenly we’re talking about how Tom Cruise is a cool guy for going to Wimbledon and enjoying Indian food. Laura Prepon recently spoke about how she is “not practicing” Scientology anymore and she hasn’t practiced in “close to five years.” Many of us noted her careful word choice and wondered if there would be pushback on Laura from CoS. So far, nothing has happened? And so now we’re getting stories about how Laura is “relieved.”

Carving her own path. Laura Prepon is at peace after leaving the Church of Scientology, a source reveals exclusively in the new issue of Us Weekly.

“She feels relieved to be living life on her own terms,” the insider says of the That ’70s Show alum, 41. “She wants to focus on her own individual spirituality.”

Prepon is focused on her family. The New Jersey native wed actor Ben Foster in 2018. The pair share daughter Ella, 4, and a son, 16 months. “She’s a mom now and she’s moved on, and she is building her life around that,” the source continues. “Laura found her own spiritual path and no longer wants to be associated with the church.”

In her recent admission, Prepon noted that Foster, 40, never practiced Scientology but said that the two meditate together instead.

I wonder if CoS still has the resources, time and energy to stalk and harass their wayward cult members. Remember when that was a thing? Leah Remini said it still f–king happens, although maybe it doesn’t happen as much these days. Also from Us Weekly:

Unexpected challenges. The Church of Scientology is still reeling after high-profile members, including Leah Remini and Laura Prepon, left the controversial organization behind.

“These are tough times for the church,” a source exclusively reveals in the latest issue of Us Weekly, on newsstands now. “Years ago, it almost unheard of for a Hollywood star to openly walk away. But the tidal wave of backlash generated by the likes of Leah and other whistleblowers has changed that.”

According to the insider, “There’s a general feeling that if you don’t want to be a Scientologist, you can step back and choose.”

[From Us Weekly]

I really do wonder if this is really what’s happening behind the scenes? Like, would a cult like CoS suddenly become more chill about people leaving? Would it suddenly be no big deal? Part of me wonders if CoS becoming more undercover is actually a bad thing. It might mean that they’re just focusing on their core members and realigning their power base.

Laura Prepon: ‘I haven’t practiced Scientology in close to five years’

Laura Prepon and husband Ben Foster

About six years ago, Ben Foster dated Robin Wright and we covered them whenever they walked a red carpet. He was younger, she was hot. They seemed like a hot couple, truly. Then suddenly in 2016, Ben and Robin were done and he started dating Laura Prepon, best known for That ‘70s Show and Orange is the New Black. At the time, I wondered if this was all some kind of Scientology Honey Trap because (reportedly) Ben was rumored to be Scientology-curious and Laura was still a Scientologist. Anyway, they got married and they had two children, a boy and a girl. Laura wrote a memoir which was published last year, and I guess the book is out on paperback now, because she has given a lengthy interview to People Magazine about motherhood, eating disorders and how she’s not a Scientologist anymore. Huh!! Some highlights:

Her mother taught her to be bulimic: “I had so many people reaching out to me, telling me about their own issues and struggles with food and their relationships with their parents. Many people have thanked me for opening up about my relationship with my mother. Both the positive and the negative, because a lot of times we glaze over stuff because it’s hard or makes us feel vulnerable. If there’s someone out there who’s silently struggling with dysfunctional eating or struggling with their parents, and if I helped a single person, I’d be happy.”

She is no longer a Scientologist. “I’m no longer practicing Scientology. I’ve always been very open-minded, even since I was a child. I was raised Catholic and Jewish. I’ve prayed in churches, meditated in temples. I’ve studied Chinese meridian theory. I haven’t practiced Scientology in close to five years and it’s no longer part of my life.”

Ben Foster has never been a Scientologist? These days she finds solace in meditation, which she does with her husband, who has never practiced Scientology. “We meditate daily and I’m really liking it,” she says, “because it’s something that helps me to hear my own voice and it’s something we can do together.”

It sounds like she’s saying Scientology was a phase: “If motherhood has taught me anything so far, it’s that something can work out for a period of time and then you move on and evolve from that. As a new mom, I was riddled with anxiety that I had never experienced before. My friends who were mothers with older kids said, ‘Laura, this is a phase, you’ll move on and then it will be something different.’ And that has transcended into other parts of my life. We’re all evolving. I always see that with my kids.”

[From People]

That’s very, very interesting, all of it. Leah Remini has talked a lot about what happened to her (and what happens to other people) when they leave Scientology, and how CoS keeps tabs on her and all of that creepy sh-t. I wonder if Laura’s timeline – saying that she hasn’t been a practicing Scientologist “in close to five years” – means that she basically left CoS as soon as she married Ben and got pregnant with their first child. That’s what it amounts to! And I always thought Ben sort of flirted with Scientology, so it’s interesting to hear her say that he’s “never practiced.” Do you think they fell in love and he was like “I can’t be with you if you continue to belong to this cult?” Or did he just step back and let her make that decision on her own?

Emmy Awards 2014 Fashion Post

Lena Dunham+Jack Antonoff

The Emmys are here! So naturally, that means it’s time to critique everyone’s outfits. Let’s get right to it! Go through the looks and make your pick for who has the BEST, WORST, and most WTF look of the night! Mine are at the bottom, as always.

Allison+Janney

I think Allison Janney looks fan-freakin-tastic! I love the color (though it looked way more pink on TV) and the bow. I think she is aging beautifully.

amanda+peet

Amanda Peet looks kind of blah. But then again, I’ve never been a fan of her style.
