Leah Remini: Can you imagine Tom Cruise without Scientology doing his dirty work?

Leah Remini has had a lot going on in her personal life the last few years. Her daughter went off to college, Leah herself enrolled at NYU for a liberal arts associate’s program, she sued the Church of Scientology for harassment and defamation, and she and her husband divorced after 21 years of marriage. That’s a lot! So it’s no surprise that she’s been pretty quiet lately. But she’s speaking up now, and the timing couldn’t be better. Just as Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning is breaking box office records, Leah is here to remind us that the stunt queen is A) still a Scientologist, and B) hugely benefiting from the “church” doing extensive dirty work on his behalf, to keep his reputation (and ego) squeaky clean. Well played, Leah. I’d call that mission accomplished. Furthermore, Leah tells Us Weekly that she doubts Tom Cruise could function “in the real world” without COS covering his ass.

But even after more than a decade of speaking out, the actress says the Church still holds a powerful grip on some of Hollywood’s biggest names, many of whom continue to stay silent or benefit from the institution’s vast resources. At the top of that list, she says, is Tom Cruise, who remains the Church’s most prominent ambassador — and, according to Remini, its most protected. “Can you imagine Tom being in a normal world? Like, without Scientology doing his dirty work for him? No,” she tells Us Weekly of the Mission: Impossible star, who maintains a close friendship with Church leader David Miscavige.

Remini claims Cruise has long relied on Scientology to protect his public image, with the organization going as far as to orchestrate his breakup with former girlfriend Nazanin Boniadi in the mid-2000s and suppress damaging media coverage. “He’s given enormous power,” she tells Us. “This man who has a multi-million-dollar organization using all its resources to stop a book being written about him.”

According to Remini, when her Aftermath cohost Mike Rinder, a former senior member of the Church, left in 2007, he took thousands of documents with him. Among those, she alleges, there were “hundreds” demonstrating how Cruise’s team worked to shut down news stories — even people planning to fly skywriting over a movie premiere. “They used all kinds of resources because they couldn’t risk Tom’s precious eyes seeing that,” she adds.

…In recent years, both Cruise and [John] Travolta have been noticeably quieter about their beliefs, but Remini doesn’t think that signals a change of heart. “They’re being exposed for what they truly believe in,” she says. “And they realized, ‘We better shut up, or we’re not going to have careers.’ But that doesn’t mean they aren’t still in full agreement with what the Church does.”

Asked if she believes any of these celebrity members will ever walk away, Remini doesn’t sound hopeful. “I used to hope a lot of these people would leave,” she admits. “But I kind of feel like they need Scientology. I don’t know if they’d make it in the real world.”

[From Us Weekly]

Again, thank you Leah for these timely comments. I’m a bitch who holds a grudge, so whenever I see Tom Cruise pop up I can’t get past his Scientology association, let alone his status at the top of that cult. But he is savvy, and Cruise conducts himself in a way that makes it easy for people to turn a blind eye to COS. LaineyGossip had a nuanced take a couple weeks ago, noting how Cruise will show up to press junkets early and make time to speak with everyone in the line. “That’s what makes talking about Tom Cruise complicated for some members of the media. He’s a weirdo, no doubt. But if a weirdo has shown you a kindness, it’s hard to forget.” Bingo. And there’s plenty more acts of generosity Cruise does, like mentoring up-and-comers, or his infamous Christmas coconut cake list. And hey, these thoughtful traits may genuinely be part of his personality. But it’s also a pretty slick tactic for shielding himself from Scientology heat. And like Leah said, I don’t think Cruise is ever leaving COS at this point.

Switching topics, can someone please explain to me the “haircut” Cruise has sported the last several years? It isn’t his worst offense, but still…

Divorces Leah Remini

Leah Remini & Angelo Pagán are divorcing after 21 years of marriage

Sometimes, I feel like I’m the only person who remembers Leah Remini’s VH1 documentaries. I realize that I’m dating myself terribly, but they were so good! She did one about her wedding to Angelo Pagan and a second documentary when she was pregnant with their daughter. Angelo came across as a seriously good guy, loving and supportive, in both of the documentaries. Those documentaries are a huge part of why I’ve always supported Leah and her marriage to Angelo. Well, it’s all over. The marriage, that is. After 21 years, Leah and Angelo are divorcing.

Leah Remini and husband Angelo Pagán are going their separate ways after more than two decades of marriage. The King of Queens alum, 54, and the entrepreneur announced their decision to end their marriage after 21 years in a joint Instagram post on Thursday, Aug. 29.

“Well, here we are. After 28 years together and 21 years of marriage, we have decided to file for divorce,” the announcement began. “This decision came after a lot of thought and care, and as hard as divorce is, we are approaching this with a positive outlook because we know it’s what’s best for us. We are proud of how we have worked through this together.” While they figure out their “new normal,” they said they will still continue “celebrating holidays together, watching our favorite tv shows together, and gathering as a family.”

“So, the big question—why? To put it simply, we both changed, as people do, and we got used to playing roles that didn’t fit us anymore. After a lot of effort and consideration, we’ve decided to take this step, which reflects who we are today,” they wrote.

“Our bond is still strong—it’s just evolved into something different. We think a marriage that lasted this long and created so many beautiful memories, especially raising our incredible daughter, is something to celebrate. From our perspective, this marriage was a huge success. And now, we’re looking forward to creating even more cherished moments—just in a different way.”

Remini and Pagán said they wanted to be “as transparent as we can be” since they shared their marriage “so publicly” on TV over the years.

“We are sharing this unknown territory with you all as we take our first steps into this next stage of our lives publicly,” the statement continued. “We would love for everyone to have more access to different kinds of relationship stories and not feel so isolated in navigating the changes that millions of couples make every year. We hope our journey can inspire others to see that relationships—whether they change or end—aren’t failures. We’ll keep sharing snippets of our lives as we navigate this new chapter.”

[From People]

After nearly three decades together, they couldn’t make it last for the final stretch? That’s so sad to me. It also feels notable that their daughter is 20 years old and presumably out of the house. This is an empty-nest divorce too, in my opinion. I also think there’s probably been significant stress on the marriage because Leah so publicly split with Scientology and CoS has come after her in many ways in recent years. Anyway, this makes me so sad. It’s also kind of crazy that Leah and her BFF Jennifer Lopez are both getting divorced at the same time.

Cults david miscavige Lawsuits Leah Remini Scientology Tom Cruise

Leah Remini sues Scientology, she was stalked, held in Florida for four months

An undeniable fact about 2022 is that Top Gun: Maverick “saved theatrical distribution,” to quote Steven Spielberg. Not only did it do well for a post-pandemic release, it became one of the most successful films ever, and all in-theaters. I have hated this fact since Maverick’s release, because it puts an entire industry in debt to a man who is virtually at the head of a cult. I know Tom Cruise is an excellent producer. I know he is very polished, some say even thoughtful in how he conducts himself for Hollywood business. But I cannot forget that he and David Miscavige are the kings of the Church of Scientology. They are responsible for the organization’s reprehensible behavior and heinous crimes. On Wednesday, former COS member and current NYU student Leah Remini filed a lawsuit against the Church of Scientology and described the harassment, defamation, and psychological torture they inflicted on her:

It started falling apart at TomKat’s 2006 wedding: The event was billed as “the wedding of the century,” so Remini says she was surprised when [David] Miscavige’s wife, Michele (“Shelly”) Miscavige, “was nowhere to be found… When Ms. Remini asked a group of Scientology executives and Tom Cruise’s personal handlers… ‘Where is Shelly?’ she was immediately admonished by the group, despite the fact that she and Ms. Miscavige were good friends,” the lawsuit claims.

She was forced to do an ‘ethics cycle’ post-wedding: “Upon arrival, Ms. Remini was presented with dozens of internal reports from Scientologists complaining about her behavior at the wedding. It was clear to Ms. Remini that she was being punished for asking where Shelly Miscavige was and for filing reports on David Miscavige and others. Ms. Remini was held at FLAG [Flag Land Base headquarters in Florida] for four months while she was put through a process that cost her hundreds of thousands of dollars and nearly led her to have a psychotic breakdown,” the lawsuit alleges.

They made her buy a theater seat for Suri: Remini alleges she had to make peace with David [Miscavige] and Cruise. “For example, she was forced to donate money to name a seat in a theater after Suri Cruise and was to raise money for donation to Scientology causes led by Tom Cruise,” the lawsuit reads. The actress estimates that during her more than 35 years as a Scientologist, she spent around $5 million.

In 2020 COS sent a man to stalk her home: “Defendants armed this man with a vehicle and money to stalk and surveil Ms. Remini. Over the course of several weeks, at Defendants’ behest, this man rammed his car into the security gates of Ms. Remini’s community and asked residents for Ms. Remini’s address, saying he was waiting to get into her house, falsely claiming he had been there several times before, and that he needed to get a bigger ladder in order to reach her bedroom window,” the lawsuit reads. “He was eventually arrested and then released, at which point he called the police to allege that Ms. Remini was holding hostages at her home. After police responded to Ms. Remini’s house, he was again arrested.”

[From Yahoo! Entertainment]

Well, I hope at least the Suri Cruise theater seat doesn’t sting so much anymore. There’s so much listed in the lawsuit, including Anderson Cooper filming but then never airing a segment with Remini because of a “storm of harassment” from COS, and COS sending Conan O’Brien a character assassination letter on Remini when he had her on as a guest. In continuing with their hateful, aggressive tactics, COS eventually released a statement in reaction to the lawsuit. It is positively unhinged! Just a couple excerpts from the full page rebuttal:

“Remini’s complaints are like an anti-Semite complaining about the Jewish Anti-Defamation League for exposing the anti-Semite’s bigotry and propaganda.”

Did you follow that? Oh good, me neither. And this is the closer:

“The Church is not intimidated by Remini’s latest act of blatant harassment and attempt to prevent truthful free speech. If Remini does not believe in free speech, then she should consider emigrating to Russia.”

Like I said, unhinged. I think (hope!) that behind the scenes Xenu is sh*tting their pants. Thank you Leah Remini for speaking out, for filing the suit, and for continuing to raise the question: Where’s Shelly?

Laura Prepon Leah Remini Scientology

Leah Remini shades Laura Prepon for not speaking out against Scientology

Leah Remini hosts the People Puzzler game show, which is why she is doing the promotional rounds currently. She called in to Daily Blast Live to talk about the show but was asked first about fellow ex-Scientologist Laura Prepon. Laura admitted in August that she had not “practiced Scientology in five years.” At the time, Kaiser noted how well-chosen Laura’s words were about the cult and speculated it was likely to avoid consequences from CoS. On Tuesday, Leah confirmed that. Leah claimed Laura wasn’t using her voice to fight back against CoS and it was probably to avoid Fair Game, the practices carried out against CoS’ enemies. However, Leah went on to say she doesn’t respect Laura’s lack of action. She thinks ex members need to fight the cult because of the harm they did while members.

Leah Remini is explaining why she had issues with how Laura Prepon handled her exit from the Church of Scientology.

During a video interview with Daily Blast Live posted to YouTube on Tuesday, Sept. 28, Leah, 51, was asked about the That ’70s Show alum stating last month that she was no longer associated with Scientology. In her response, Leah said she thought the 41-year-old actress could have more effectively used her platform to help others. After all, Leah, who was a lifelong Scientology member before exiting in 2013, has become known for speaking out against the Church.

Leah told the outlet she “reached out” to Laura to express this, but added that “not everybody who has a voice uses it.” The King of Queens star went on to say she herself felt she had a responsibility to become an outspoken critic of the organization after having actively helped to recruit members for many years.

“I got people into Scientology—I promoted it most of my life,” Leah shared. “For those of us who were in the public eye and who were speaking on behalf of Scientology, getting people into Scientology, I feel that we have a responsibility to do the work when we find out that none of those things we were doing was not only [not] helpful, but damaging and very harmful to people’s lives.”

Leah, whose Emmy-winning series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath ran for three seasons, said “not everybody feels that they have a responsibility” to be so vocal about the alleged harm Leah feels the Church has caused.

“Some people, like Laura, feel they don’t have a responsibility to speak out,” she continued. “Do I respect it? I mean, not really.”

[From E News]

I am posting the clip below. It’s queued up to the CoS discussion. To me, the excerpt doesn’t read as adamant as Leah was about Laura’s silence. Once again, I admire Leah’s frankness. It’s refreshing to hear someone speak their truth in Hollywood. As for what she’s saying, I have no idea how CoS works. I got the impression that some members weren’t privileged to much information about what was going on. And when I read Laura talk about her departure, I assumed shejust didn’t know enough to hurt the church and that’s why they left her alone. But Leah would know, obviously. So her anger tells me Laura’s silence is something else.

However, if Laura is protecting something, or even still processing and deprogramming, then maybe she still needs time to join the fight. And she should be allowed that time. But I would think Leah would know this as well. I feel like there is a lot in what Leah isn’t saying. She wouldn’t have put Laura on blast if there wasn’t a reason for it. I’m not saying it was the right reason, but there was definitely a reason. I think it’s personal.

Leah Remini is going to NYU: ‘I was in a cult and I missed out on education’

Leah Remini has been taking her life back bit by bit since she escaped Scientology. She’s been working steadily, which allowed her to expose the cult that robbed her of so much. Leah channeled a lot of that into her series, Scientology: Fair Game. In addition to showing the world what’s really going under in Scientology, Leah is also trying to reclaim a “normal” life. And that includes going after things the cult denied her, like an education. Leah applied and was accepted to New York University, which she is now attending. She relishes the opportunity, something she’d never even thought of as a kid. Leah called in to Today and spoke with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush about how much it meant to her to finally have this chance.

On going to NYU

I was in a cult most of my life and I missed out on education. This is something that I’ve always wanted for myself. I was like ‘why not just go for it?’ I applied to NYU. I didn’t tell anybody that I was doing it. I couldn’t believe that I actually got accepted. I’m doing something that I always wanted to do. It’s like the last thing that I’m kind of taking back.

On her big birthday party being the Bennifer reveal

I had no idea. The only caveat to my birthday video to the photographer [was] ‘just make sure everybody is in it. Go through the guest list. I don’t want anybody to be left out.’ I didn’t even think this would be breaking into Dateline. I had no idea. ‘It’s not about Jennifer, it’s about my birthday cake!’

On if she’s happy for Jennifer’s new relationship

You know that I do a podcast. You know that I’m trying to take down a $3 billion cult. I’m hosting a gameshow with normal people not in the entertainment business. ‘We want to have the sound byte about Jennifer.’

‘I’m not happy that Jennifer’s happy’ can you imagine?

[From Today via YouTube]

I left school and returned as an “older” student. That experience meant a lot to me, I can’t imagine how much this means to Leah. I’m really happy for her. I think people who want an education should have one and I wish all schools would help that happen for them. Leah said that her daughter asked if she wanted to come do homework with her. She seemed really tickled with it too. You can tell how much she’s getting from the experience. I know it sounds silly, but I’m so proud of her.

Watching the interview, I’m convinced I want to hang out with Leah and Hoda regularly. They are not only funny to listen to, they laugh honestly and unreservedly. I loved the way Hoda kept egging Leah on about Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. And Leah’s response about “it’s always about Jennifer,” made me laugh. I did notice that she never did say she was happy that Ben and Jen were back together. She kept making the same joke about how she’s doing all this wonderful stuff and all people ask about is Bennifer. Is she avoiding the topic because once she comments that’s all she’ll be talking about? Or is her sarcasm a deflection to avoid saying what she really feels? I get the impression that Leah doesn’t say things she doesn’t mean.

Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck are ‘Instagram Official’ because of Leah Remini

affleck lopez remini

One of the things I weirdly love about Jennifer Lopez is that she’s been friends with Leah Remini for decades. They’re such an odd couple for BFFs, but I think more of J.Lo for wanting Leah’s no-nonsense energy in her life. J.Lo is personified with a pink heart emoji. Leah has the personified energy of the skull-and-crossbones. Leah threw a big birthday bash for herself last month, and wouldn’t you know, her BFF came. And J.Lo brought her boyfriend. So now Bennifer is Instagram-Official.

I actually hoped that they would be Instagram Official before now. It just shows you that neither of them really understands the power they could have on Instagram especially. Like, if a month after they got together, they had posted a coupled-up Instagram with “remember us?” or “seventeen years later,” they both would have scored so many cool points. Instead, they’re both focused on old media – the paparazzi and pap stroll model, with leaks to Page Six, People Magazine and Us Weekly. It reminds me a bit of when George Clooney got with Amal – he did an old-media wife rollout too. Anyway, Ben and Jen are still missing from each other’s Instagram accounts. I hope they get on that soon. It’s cute that Leah was the first one to do it for them!

Here’s Leah’s Instagram. Her birthday party was very well-attended! She’s very popular. Leah should yell at Jennifer and get J.Lo to post some Bennifer photos on her IG.

Tom Cruise is ‘freaking out’ about Leah Remini, ‘he’s letting CoS discredit her’

FFN_Cruise_Tom2_RM_110515_51900288

Here are some photos of Tom Cruise last week in New Orleans, filming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, the sequel no one really wanted. Tom has been very, very quiet recently. His silence has been especially notable given the explosion of Leah Remini stories in the past month. Leah was everywhere, promoting her tell-all memoir Troublemaker, which includes many, many stories about leaving the Church of Scientology in general, and many stories about Tom Cruise specifically. While a Scientology spokesperson has been swiping at Remini on the record, Cruise has yet to say anything about Remini or anything else. But now “sources” tell Us Weekly that Cruise has been freaking out.
