‘Ghostbusters’ opened at the box office with $46 million: did you love it or hate it?

I was looking forward to seeing the lady-version of Ghostbusters, mostly because I love the combo of Melissa McCarthy + director Paul Feig, and I think Kate McKinnon is one of the funniest people working today. I went to see it on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and about half-way through the film, I realized that it really wasn’t that funny. Ghostbusters has some giggle-worthy lines and some charm and McKinnon in particular was really trying her damnedest to bring some lightness and quirk to the movie, but even the combined talents of these funny women couldn’t save a clunky script. Those were the biggest issues: pacing, and a script that needed a few more rewrites. They spent too much time earnestly building the world of the “modern” Ghostbusters and there were so many opportunities for some tongue-in-cheek cultural references, anything to shorthand the process and move along the action, but it just didn’t happen. Which isn’t to say that I think it’s a bad movie. It’s not, and if you’re in the mood for something light and silly, I would recommend it. It’s harmless and there are some funny lines and good moments. I feel like Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy’s comedic talents were oddly underutilized as they both tried to play the straight-man to varying degrees. Leslie Jones’ Patty was brought into the story too late (pacing issues, I’m telling you). Chris Hemsworth’s character was the victim of messy writing too, and it felt like they couldn’t decide how stupid they wanted him to be, so his level of intelligence kept changing scene-to-scene. I’m well aware that there is a Battle of the Sexes happening around this film and around the reviews of the film. I was prepared to go to war and rip apart the misogynistic criticism of the film. But after seeing it, the most feminist thing I can say is that the leading ladies were trying and the film’s flaws are not their fault. The fault lies with Paul Feig and Katie Dippold, the co-writers of the clunky script. As for the box office, Sony predicted that it would make between $40-50 million opening weekend, and it performed as expected. Early reports on Sunday put the figure at something like $46 million. It came in second behind The Secret Life of Pets, which… let’s face it, is a massive, crowd-pleasing family film. The problem was that Ghostbusters was TOO scary for really little kids and not funny enough to have box office longevity. It cost $144 million to make Ghostbusters, and I’m sure that the film will break even and likely make the studio some money. But as many analysts pointed out, that might not be good enough. Last fall, Pippa Middleton and Nico Jackson finally ended their relationship after months of drama. He basically moved to Switzerland to get away from Pippa, but that still didn’t end the relationship. The relationship only ended when Pippa was seen having a “sleepover” at James Matthews’ house. Suddenly, Pippa and Nico were done and then Pippa and James Matthews were a thing. Their relationship was confirmed just days into the new year, with sources dishing that Pippa’s new boyfriend is “terribly rich” and very much into Pippa. And in 2016, we really haven’t seen that much of Pippa, lending credence to the idea that Prince William convinced Pippa to give up Pippa-Tipping and “writing” so she could focus on landing a husband who would financially support her. And now it might be happening! Per the Daily Mail’s “Diary” gossip girl: I’m loathe to spoil a surprise, but is Pippa Middleton’s boyfriend about to propose? Sources tell me that James Matthews is whisking her away to the Caribbean island of St Barts in September – where he might pop the question at his parents’ exclusive hotel, Eden Rock. A ‘save the date card’ is already circulating among close pals with the message: ‘Don’t Tell Pippa,’ while mum Carole is in on it, too. As Pippa’s brother James is now back with Donna Air, could it be a race to see who walks down the aisle first? [From The Daily Mail] To be fair, there were tons of these kinds of rumors about Pippa and Nico and her boyfriend before Nico too. It’s “the Middleton way” to publicly encourage Pippa’s boyfriends to propose by dropping hints to gossip columnists. The Middleton family did it with Kate and Prince William too, during The Waity Years. That being said, I do think Pippa has found The One. If we’re defining The One as “some guy who is terribly rich and well-connected.” Which is all she’s ever wanted! I’m hoping he does propose just so Pippa can change her storyline, you know? I hope I’m not overselling this, but HUZZAH, finally some paparazzi wandered down to Nashville to get some photos of Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift. I’ve actually been waiting for this for a week and a half! While the original Tiddles photo-op in Rhode Island was super-obvious, it was also pretty obviously exclusive to one paparazzo, in that Taylor totally staged the photos. But her usual M.O. with her boyfriend-rollouts is to go somewhere public, populated and pap-friendly with her new boyfriend so that everyone can get shots. And that’s what we have now! After Tiddles spent Tuesday night at a Selena Gomez concert and spent Wednesday night having an “intimate dinner” at a steakhouse, what was on deck for Thursday? A whole day spent with Taylor’s family, it seems. Tom and Taylor were photographed out and about in Nashville with her parents and some other people, maybe Taylor’s brother? They visited the Country Music Hall Of Fame, then went to lunch and did some shopping. Then Taylor took Tom for dinner at Adele’s restaurant with some of her girlfriends. The photos are pretty amazing, right? They certainly seem… something. Well-connected, maybe? Especially since they’ve only been together for a few weeks? Also, there’s been a lot of commenting on Taylor’s bust in all of these photo-ops. Swifty had a boob job several years back, and some have been wondering if she treated herself to a size upgrade, perhaps after her split with Calvin Harris. While I do think she’s looking “fuller,” I don’t think the timeline makes sense as far as post-surgical healing. So did she get a bolt-on upgrade or is she just wearing hugely padded bras? Tom Hiddleston: ‘I’m here to tell you that my butt is not dangerous’

I still find Tom Hiddleston’s W Magazine editorial to be the funniest thing of the week. Now that I’ve had more time to process it, it’s actually even funnier to me. The thing is, I don’t doubt that Tom can be a sexy guy. But Tom needs the right conditions, and the right conditions don’t involve a brightly lit room, white boxer shorts and Zoolander poses. The editorial still seems like a satire of what a “sexy” dude photoshoot should be. Imagine Mike Meyers or Will Ferrell doing the same editorial and it would be JUST AS FUNNY. There’s been a lot of breast-beating amongst the true-blue Dragonflies and Hiddlestoners that W Magazine did Tom wrong, that this editorial was supposed to be part of a larger profile of up-and-coming TV stars or Emmy hopefuls, maybe. Perhaps that’s the case. But that still doesn’t explain why in God’s name Tom agreed to the photoshoot. Someone needs to be fired! The editorial is the visual equivalent of Tom’s trying-too-hard Graham Norton interview. And besides that, my guess is that someone on Tom’s team had to give the go-ahead to W Mag to run this piece as an “Introduction to Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend!” article. And if that’s the case, someone should be fired. I didn’t get around to discussing this new quote from the W piece either – Tom was asked about how AMC edited out his naked butt from the American airing of The Night Manager. Tom says: “I was surprised to hear that they cut my butt out. I’m here to tell you that my butt is not dangerous. And there are many, many more dangerous things that people are happy to broadcast. I don’t know what that says about the world we live in, but it probably says something.” [From W Magazine] I watched TNM as it aired on AMC and let me tell you, I felt that edit in my soul. It’s not that I was that hungry for Hiddlesbum, it’s that the edit made it seem like Jonathan Pine and Jed’s lovemaking lasted about 30 seconds, if that. Meanwhile, I have to say, I’ve been avoiding a lot of the “think pieces” on TIDDLES, because I do this for a living and it pains me a little bit when people write about Hiddleston or Taylor Swift without understanding their individual histories. If you’ve followed Taylor’s romantic history, nothing about TIDDLES is a surprise at all. If you’ve followed Tom’s romantic history, everything about TIDDLES is a surprise. Which brings me to this “think piece” at the NY Post – “Taylor Swift Is Dating Like A Dude.” The main argument is that Taylor: A) doesn’t apologize, B) is not afraid to air her dirty laundry and trash-talk exes, C) rolls with an entourage, and D) rebounds quickly. While I agree that Taylor is feeling herself these days, when I think of “women who date like dudes,” I think of women like Kate Hudson or even (dare I say) Gwyneth Paltrow. They own their sh-t. And most importantly, they don’t play the victim. We’re about one month away from Taylor crying to Vanity Fair that she’s being “slut shamed” because she staged photos of her romantic rendezvous with Hiddles. Johnny Depp: Drunken Assault on Amber Heard Revealed?

On Friday, Amber Heard requested a restraining order against Johnny Depp, claiming that her estranged husband had violently assaulted her and left her with facial bruising and other injuries. Several of Depp’s high profile friends and exes expressed their skepticism about Heard’s version of events, with some even going so far as to accuse the actress of blackmailing Depp.  Heard’s attorneys responded by issuing a statement indicating that Heard plans to file assault charges against Depp. Her legal team now claims that she had only declined to do so on the night of the alleged attack in hopes of protecting “her privacy and Johnny’s career.” Now that Depp’s team has publicly accused her of lying, however, it seems that all bets are off. Not only will Heard be filing a police report that could result in serious criminal charges for the 52-year-old actor, her lawyers have claimed that the attack that took place last week (during which Depp allegedly struck Heard in the face with an iPhone) was not an isolated incident. So perhaps it’s no coincidence that sources supporting Heard have started coming forward with shocking allegations about Depp’s brutish behavior throughout the 15-month marriage: View Slideshow: Johnny Depp Domestic Abuse Allegations: Stars React “Johnny has been drunk for most of their relationship. He often wakes up drinking and he does not stop until he blacks out,” an insider close to the couple tells Radar Online.  Just two months after Depp married Heard, he was photographed with a cast on his hand that was reportedly the result of an accident on set. Kylie Jenner is ‘livid, super betrayed’ about Blac Chyna & Rob Kardashian

One of my favorite things to come out of Kylie Jenner’s “transformation” over the past few years is that people started calling her White Chyna. That, to me, is hilarious. Tyga famously dumped his long-time girlfriend/fiancee/baby-mama Blac Chyna for Kylie when she was underage. That was around the time that Kylie began her transformation too, and by the way… she does seem to be “stealing” Blac Chyna’s look. I’m telling you, this whole thing is very Brandi Glanville/LeAnn Rimes. Especially when the jumpoff (Kylie) is single-white-female-ing the original (Blac Chyna). Thus, we get White Chyna. Anyway, as we discussed earlier, Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna are sort of happening now. Blac Chyna posted a photo of Rob’s arm draped around her and the Twitterverse exploded. Blac Chyna is no longer tight with the Kardashians, but they were all friendly at one point, so Blac Chyna really knows what she’s doing here. And I still think it’s really funny/shady. So how does Kylie feel about this situation, with her half-brother hooking up with the ex-partner of her current boyfriend? Kylie Jenner and half-brother Rob Kardashian are on less than good terms following news he’s been romantically linked to Blac Chyna. “Kylie is livid,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She feels super betrayed and can’t understand why someone in her own family would stab her in the back like that.” Blac Chyna, whose birth name is Angela Renée White, is Tyga’s ex-fiancée, and together they have a son, King Cairo, 3. Jenner has been dating the 26-year-old rapper since late 2014, but the pair didn’t take their relationship public until last August when they went on a PDA-filled trip to celebrate her 18th birthday. And Blac Chyna’s bad blood with Jenner involves her famous sisters. The mother of one was once close friends with Kim Kardashian West, though the friendship appears no longer. In addition, Khloé Kardashian and Blac Chyna’s BFF Amber Rose have had many public feuds on Twitter regarding Jenner’s relationship with Tyga. Furthermore, Tyga and Blac Chyna aren’t the friendliest of exes – he lashed out at her on Instagram in September for allegedly spreading rumors that he couldn’t afford the Ferrari he bought Jenner for her 18th birthday in August. Blac Chyna manipulated this situation brilliantly if her aim was simply to get at Kylie (which it probably was). As for Rob… I don’t really understand how he doesn’t see that he’s being manipulated too. But maybe he’s okay with it because he has such a love-hate/passive-aggressive relationship with some members of his family. And you know he still lives with Khloe, right?
