Rita Ora wore Tamara Ralph to the Emmys: better than her afterparty look?

It’s sort of amazing how Rita Ora & Taika Waititi feel so overexposed, and yet they’re really not everywhere constantly at this point. This is their first red carpet together in several months, and yet when they popped up at the Emmys, there was a collective groan of “not this again.” Anyway, these are photos of Rita and Taika at the Emmys and then at one of the after-parties (the black lace dress). Rita’s pink Emmy look was by Tamara Ralph. It’s actually a really great dress.

Kristen Wiig wore Oscar de la Renta. It’s okay? Kind of disco-ball chic.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph wore Sophie Couture to the Emmys. I love this? I usually don’t enjoy yellow, but she looks amazing.

Christine Baranski wore Oscar de la Renta. This was insane. She looks magnificent and noble.

Love Viola Davis, but this Zuhair Murad dress feels very Project Runway.

‘Ghostbusters’ opened at the box office with $46 million: did you love it or hate it?

ghost1

I was looking forward to seeing the lady-version of Ghostbusters, mostly because I love the combo of Melissa McCarthy + director Paul Feig, and I think Kate McKinnon is one of the funniest people working today. I went to see it on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and about half-way through the film, I realized that it really wasn’t that funny. Ghostbusters has some giggle-worthy lines and some charm and McKinnon in particular was really trying her damnedest to bring some lightness and quirk to the movie, but even the combined talents of these funny women couldn’t save a clunky script. Those were the biggest issues: pacing, and a script that needed a few more rewrites. They spent too much time earnestly building the world of the “modern” Ghostbusters and there were so many opportunities for some tongue-in-cheek cultural references, anything to shorthand the process and move along the action, but it just didn’t happen.

Which isn’t to say that I think it’s a bad movie. It’s not, and if you’re in the mood for something light and silly, I would recommend it. It’s harmless and there are some funny lines and good moments. I feel like Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy’s comedic talents were oddly underutilized as they both tried to play the straight-man to varying degrees. Leslie Jones’ Patty was brought into the story too late (pacing issues, I’m telling you). Chris Hemsworth’s character was the victim of messy writing too, and it felt like they couldn’t decide how stupid they wanted him to be, so his level of intelligence kept changing scene-to-scene.

I’m well aware that there is a Battle of the Sexes happening around this film and around the reviews of the film. I was prepared to go to war and rip apart the misogynistic criticism of the film. But after seeing it, the most feminist thing I can say is that the leading ladies were trying and the film’s flaws are not their fault. The fault lies with Paul Feig and Katie Dippold, the co-writers of the clunky script.

As for the box office, Sony predicted that it would make between $40-50 million opening weekend, and it performed as expected. Early reports on Sunday put the figure at something like $46 million. It came in second behind The Secret Life of Pets, which… let’s face it, is a massive, crowd-pleasing family film. The problem was that Ghostbusters was TOO scary for really little kids and not funny enough to have box office longevity. It cost $144 million to make Ghostbusters, and I’m sure that the film will break even and likely make the studio some money. But as many analysts pointed out, that might not be good enough. Ghostbusters didn’t need to perform at expectations, it needed to exceed expectations to be considered a “success.” You can read more analysis here.

John Goodman’s Kristen Wiig story: was she rude to him or was he rude to her?

wenn22995698

John Goodman sat down with Howard Stern this week to promote his new movie, 10 Cloverfield Lane. We rarely talk about Goodman, not because we dislike him or anything, but because he usually isn’t much of a newsmaker. He works all the time, people love him, he seems like a really normal person. There’s no real scandal, you know? Even Rosanne Barr loves him, and she hates almost everyone. While chatting with Stern, Goodman talked about New Orleans, drinking, SNL, weight loss (he’s lost a lot of weight in the past year, after he gained weight back from his 2010 weight loss) and more. The biggest headline is probably the Kristen Wiig story though, and I still don’t know how to feel. Some highlights:

He was so excited to meet Kristen Wiig, he interrupted her conversation: “She was talking to somebody else, and I was just – I think she’s so great, and the social barriers broke down and I interrupted the conversation. And I would just hate for somebody to do that to me. And she goes, ‘yeah, I’ll talk to you in a minute.’ [makes sound of bomb dropping] It was like the Atom. I shrunk down to Atom size. …I really like her, and it was embarrassing, so I’ll never speak to her again.”

He’s sober now, but he used to drink at work: “I was drunk a couple of times during ‘[The Big] Lebowski,’ but that was way too many for me. That was something I swore to myself I would never do – drink at work. And then that – on Roseanne I started doing that.”

Whether he avoided the Vietnam draft: “I got a lottery number of 30,” Goodman revealed, but said they didn’t ask him to serve because when he went into for his physical they marked him down as being too heavy for his height after recording his height incorrectly. “I would have been the big baby of the Army,” he admitted though.

He loves Brie Larson, his ‘Kong: Skull Island’ costar: “She was so charismatic. She was like the only girl on set and every weekend she would organize stuff to do. We would look at kangaroos. She would organize a trip to an amusement park after it closed … Just stuff for people to do, because she’s nervous about people getting angry or getting on each other’s nerves.”

On politics: “I keep it to myself and it will, you know, give me the cancer… I hate political ads. I hate seeing people … getting swept up into a mob mentality.”

On Obama: “I just feel bad for Obama. As soon as he got into office they started kicking the s–t out of him. For no reason. … He could have a cancer cure and it’s like, ‘No, it’s not good enough.’”

an, I get it, she was in the middle of a conversation and God knows I hate it when people interrupt me or talk over me or anything like that. But still… it was John Goodman! The man is a national treasure! When John Goodman comes over and wants to fan-boy all over you, you hit pause on your conversation and talk to him, you know? It’s like… being interrupted by Tom Hanks or Jeff Bridges. You just let it happen because they’re awesome people.

Penelope Cruz in Versace at UK ‘Zoolander 2′ premiere: stunning or cheap?

wenn23450819

For the past week, various members of the Zoolander 2 cast have been making their way through Europe, doing smaller premieres and photocalls. But last night was the big London premiere, and everyone came out for it. Everyone but Benedict Cumberbatch, and I was really hoping he would come! I guess he’s working on Doctor Strange and he couldn’t get away. Sad. Anyway, there was a surprising lack of big fashion moments from the premiere, but I’ve tried to select some of the best or most interesting looks. Let’s start with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, or Derek and Hansel. Owen has seemed to be having the most fun out of everyone.

wenn23451445

Here’s Penelope Cruz in Atelier Versace. Considering the latest Versace collection is really messy and poorly designed, I kind of think Penelope picked the best look available to her. It’s simple and kind of game-show-hostess-y.

wenn23450623

Kristin Wiig wore vintage Yves Saint Laurent (and Prada shoes). All I have to say is… this? Really? You’re going to carefully select a vintage look for a big fashion-friendly event and you choose this ill-fitting cocktail dress with an ugly stomach bow? I like Wiig a lot, but whenever I see her on the red carpet, I feel like she’s taking style cues from Jennifer Aniston and Wiig is much, much better than that.

wenn23450841

Jourdan Dunn in Ralph & Russo. This was one of my favorite looks. On another woman, it would have been a hot mess, but this looks cute on her.

wenn23451101

I can’t find the ID on Lara Stone’s dress. It’s cute, but a lot of women did metallics on this carpet and Lara didn’t stand out at all.

wenn23451263

Natalie Dormer in Blumarine. She certainly got her girls out for the cameras, didn’t she? If the V wasn’t so wide and everything wasn’t falling out, I would have really liked this dress.

wenn23450874

Justin Theroux. *sad clown noise* It’s a little bit funny that Jennifer Aniston hasn’t come out to support her husband’s film at all, right?

Emma Watson Covers Elle, Premieres Noah

-I’m not sure I’m feeling the wrinkly material on the halter dress Emma Watson wore to today’s Noah premiere. She fares much better in her new Elle photo spread, where she talks about growing up in public. “There are all these actresses who have emerged in the last year or two, and they get to emerge as this complete human being. And I’m so jealous!”

-Speaking of Potter alums, I saw an early screening of Daniel Radcliffe‘s The F Word (which I really liked) and during the Q&A the director said they were thinking of changing the title to What If, which the audience booed. I guess he didn’t listen to us.

Selena Gomez was spotted without Justin Bieber, offering the world a chance to momentarily unclench.

-Once again, Seth Rogen slammed Justin Bieber. “He’s obnoxious, he’s ungrateful, he’s insincere.”

-Meanwhile, Seth named all the stars he’s smoked pot with — and surprisingly he says James Franco isn’t one of them.

Lena Dunham looks amazing on the new cover of Glamour.

-If Aaron Paul‘s marriage ever falls apart, I feel like we’re all going to need to take care of him because he’ll be a mess. Like, there’ll be a phone tree and a casserole dropoff schedule.

-Do TV stars even need to transition to movies anymore? It seems so old school and backwards.

-The Olsen sisters are on an engagement streak. Two weeks after Mary-Kate‘s proposal, younger sis Elizabeth is getting hitched.

Tina Fey is poo-pooing a Mean Girls sequel, which is probably for the best. We’ll always have “your mom’s chest hair!

-Despite my totally indifference to Star Wars VII, it would be great for Jesse Plemons‘ career if he landed the lead. Texas forever!

-In other good career moves, Nicholas Hoult is set to star in the Iraqi war drama Sand Castle.

Stan‘s beard is back (and on the move) in this new Mad Men photo.

Victoria Beckham uses her treadmill desk while wearing high heels. Of course she does.

-The Orphan Black goodies keep rolling in. Here’s a clip of the latest clone, some new photos from season 2, and a clue-filled poster.

-The comedy bits on Seth Meyers‘ talk show don’t really land, as you can see from this zombie interruption during Norman Reedus‘ interview.

Jimmy Fallon fared much better with Shailene Woodley, talking about suggestive vegetables and playing ping pong.

Fallon also had a great bit with Audra McDonald singing Yahoo Answers.

-If you don’t remember where Game of Thrones left off, this 25-minute recap of season 3 should get you up to speed before April 6.

Jason Derulo‘s new video is packed with celebrity cameos.

-Divergent star Theo James looks a lot like James Franco here.

-Want to see some extremely blurry video of Rihanna and Drake walking around Manchester and (possibly) holding hands?

-Also, Rihanna got Drake hooked on Breaking Bad, according to Aaron Paul.

-Crap, this makes me want to see Les Miz on Broadway.

-These photos from Robin and Barney’s wedding on How I Met Your Mother underscore what a crappy job the writers did at making Robin seem like a real person who lives in the world and has actual friends.

-How is Shaq dropping $1k per week on apps? Is that even possible?

Jared Leto took his glorious hair to Ukraine.

-One more day until the Veronica Mars movie! Here are seven reasons why men should give it a chance, and the cast talking about their favourite characters.

-If this is what Zoë Saldana looks like after dropping exercising and dieting, I give up on life.

-This is weird: Grey’s Anatomy will feature only modern ’80s cover songs for the .

-Oh god, someone is letting Michael Bay remake The Birds.

-This Walking Dead theory is super clever and fun, which probably means the writers haven’t thought of it.

-The Office star Jenna Fischer showed off her bare baby bump with this vacation photo.

-Here’s a very early rundown of some promising (and not so promising) TV shows debuting this fall.

-Speaking of TV, does fewer hit sitcoms mean more room for smarter comedies? Let’s hope!

-Sadness: Little People, Big World stars Amy and Matt Roloff have separated.

Jason Biggs really has to stop trying to be funny on Twitter. It never works.

-That anonymous model who accused Terry Richardson of assault has come forward.

Louis CK‘s show will return (finally!) on May 5.

-Well, that didn’t take long. There’s already backlash to Rooney Mara being cast as Tiger Lily.

Cameron Diaz, 40, sarcastically apologized for not looking like a 25-year-old anymore.

-I kind of feel like we’ll have seen all of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before it hits theatres given the rate Sony is releasing clips. Here’s yet another one.

Kristen Wiig plays an incredibly convincing sadsack in the trailer for Hateship Loveship.
