Jenna Ortega wore a bejeweled Givenchy: the best look of the 2025 Emmys?

Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta Jones (Wednesday Addams and Morticia Addams) copresented at this year’s Emmys. One of my issues with this year’s Emmys was that they had interesting or fun presenter-pairings but they didn’t give those people any good jokes or anything. It all felt so rote and rushed. Which, fair enough, these awards-shows are bloated enough, but it’s weird to not give these people something punchy to say. Jenna was my pick for one of the best-dressed of the Emmys – she wore this spectacular Givenchy, hot off the runway. Zeta wore Yara Shoemaker.

Megan Stalter said, on the red carpet, that she was wearing “Levis and Hanes.” Jeans and a white t-shirt, with a “Ceasefire” bag. Controversial opinion: I think she brought the kind of fashion energy that the Emmys deserve. More people should wear jeans to awards shows at this point.

Sydney Sweeney wore Oscar de la Renta to the Emmys: downmarket or cute?

Sydney Sweeney attended the 2025 Emmys as a presenter, and there actually was a buzz of excitement around her. Even though she got her start in television, it’s like… she’s a movie star now. That was the buzz. Sydney wore Oscar de la Renta, in a pinky red. It’s fine. Her body is bangin’ but the dress felt very… downmarket. I think that’s Sydney though, that’s what she brings to the table. Some women can make inexpensive clothes look like couture. Some women make couture look like a Walmart prom dress.

Michelle Williams in vintage Chanel, paired with Chanel jewels. I’m just thrilled that she’s grown out her hair this much, the “messy bob” is very cute. The vintage Chanel is… okay. I’m not crazy about it, tbh.

The Prada ladies: Scarlett Johansson, Leighton Meester and Sarah Paulson all wore Prada to the Emmys. Who had the best Prada look? It was ScarJo, right? Paulson looks like a disgraced Muppet.

The Pitt won big at the Emmys including drama, lead actor & supporting actress

Last night’s Emmy Awards had big wins for HBO Max’s The Pitt and Apple TV ’s The Studio. Host Nate Bargatze had some laugh out loud moments, particularly in his opening segment spoofing the history of television and in some of his off-the-cuff remarks. The running bit where they took money off of a donation to The Boys and Girls Club of America for acceptance speeches that went over, fell flat. It was a clever way to keep the speeches short, but it felt unfair, particularly when the presentations and bits ran long.

My favorite show, The Pitt, won outstanding drama at the end of the night, which is excellent news for a freshman water cooler show that plans to release a season every year. I can’t wait until the Fourth of July season coming out this January! It’s an intense, gory show and I love it. I think the success of The Pitt, and the results at the box office this year, speaks to how much we love horror-adjacent shows and movies, but I digress.

Katherine LaNasa won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, for her role as charge nurse Dana Evans. This was well deserved. She wore a white strapless Jason Wu gown with a blue ribbon along the bodice. This is cute. She was there with her husband of 13 years, American actor Grant Snow.

Noah Wyle won outstanding actor in a drama for his portrayal of Dr. Robby. This is his first Emmy and sixth nomination. Noah was in a custom tuxedo made by the scrubs company Figs! It must have been so comfortable, and I have a ton of respect for that company after hearing founder Heather Hasson story on Duchess Meghan’s podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. Wyle was there with his wife of 11 years, Sarah Wells.

Kristin Villanueva, she plays Princess, made headlines for debuting her pregnancy at the Emmys! This is a cute and comfortable gown and congratulations to her.

Fiona Dourif is one of a handful of nepo babies on this show. Her character, Dr. Cassie McKay, bugs me a lot but I thought that was just due to the fact that she’s a good actor. Now that I’ve seen her at the Emmys in this ridiculous cutout dress I’m not so sure. I wouldn’t be mad if Dr. McKay got arrested. You know she earned that ankle monitor.

Isa Briones (also a nepo baby) was in a lime green strapless corset dress accessorized with long hair ribbons. This is striking and perfect for the Emmys.

Shabana Azeez was in a floofy red Marchesa gown. She joked on the red carpet that she doesn’t want to get invited to the poker nights for The Pitt. She said “they’re all sharks, I don’t want to get robbed,” and then started to say “Fiona.” Shabana is an excellent actress and is not a nepo baby.

I don’t have the space or bandwidth to include all of The Pitt actors here, but I wanted to talk about Supriya Ganesh, Dr. Mohan, because I love her on the show. She looked gorgeous in a silver sequin column gown. This was one of my favorite looks of the night. Her styling is perfection too. It’s rare that understated makeup is done so well.

2025 Emmy noms: lots of love for The White Lotus, The Penguin & Severance

Every year, I feel like I say the same thing: I still care a lot about the Oscar nominations, but the Emmy nominations have become an annual slog. It’s difficult to gauge how much people *actually* care about Emmy noms because there are barely any water-cooler shows anymore, and the few water-cooler shows that do exist tend to be over-represented at the Emmys. It’s like the old farts of the Television Academy are like “hey, I heard the youths watched The White Lotus, let’s just give that show a million nominations!” I watched TWL and I loved this past season, but you can’t tell me that TWL deserves all of the Emmy love at the expense of other shows. Which is my larger point – TV is so fragmented and with each passing year, it feels like the Emmys are just less relevant and less representative of the outstanding work being done. So now that I’ve bummed everyone out, here are the big categories for this year’s Emmy noms (you can see the full list of noms here):

Yeah, the White Lotus noms are insane. They really nominated EVERYBODY. Well, everybody but Michelle Monaghan, Leslie Bibb, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sam Nivola. Honestly, the only “snub” in that group is Nivola – he was outstanding, and he should have gotten nominated, probably in Walton Goggins’ place (or just move Goggins up to the lead category). There’s a similar energy with Severance – every actor does such an incredible job on Severance, I can see why they all get nominated. But yeah, the bulk of the drama acting nominations going to the last two water-cooler shows says something, I guess. Just breaking down the numbers – Severance got 27 nominations, The Penguin got 24 noms, and The Studio and The White Lotus got 23 noms each.

Some notable snubs: nothing for Elisabeth Moss for her final season of The Handmaid’s Tale; nothing for Eddie Redmaybe for The Day of the Jackal; nothing for Bridgerton (not a shock); nothing for Selena Gomez, Steve Martin or Meryl Streep for Only Murders; no lead acting noms for Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in 1923; no acting noms for Landman; no Allison Janney for The Diplomat; no Black Doves. Eh.

Jennifer Aniston wore Oscar de la Renta to the 2024 Emmys: lovely or boring?

Jennifer Aniston had a habit for years, if not decades, of always wearing sort of boring black gown whenever she had a big red carpet. It all got a bit same-y. Well, I’m glad she’s mixing it up a bit. At last night’s Emmy Awards, Jennifer wore this sparkly Oscar de la Renta column gown. It’s nice, it photographed well, and I liked that she added some sparkle with some diamonds too. My criticism: it would have been nice to see a different hairstyle. I also think she’s way overdoing the Botox and fillers, she could barely move her face during her red carpet interviews. Also: she was nominated (but did not win) for The Morning Show.

Speaking of The Morning Show, Nicole Beharie wore Chanel. She looked lovely, and I hate that she gets overshadowed on red carpets because of her costars.

TMS’s Reese Witherspoon turned up on the red carpet with my nemesis (and her good friend) Laura Dern. Reese wore Dior, and I actually love her dress. My nemesis looks like sh-t and I love that too. Those bangs and that hair… hilariously dated. The giraffe’s ensemble isn’t terrible, but the top part didn’t fit her correctly.

‘The Bear’ picked up three major Emmy Awards, but it did not win Best Comedy

People always complain about The Bear being mislabeled a “comedy.” The assumption being, I guess, that it’s some kind of category fraud for the purposes of awards. I saw so many people worried that The Bear would end up winning Best Comedy at last night’s Emmy Awards, but it sort of worked out in the end. Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colon-Zayas picked up Emmys for The Bear, while Jean Smart won another Emmy for Best Comedic lead actress in Hacks. Then Hacks won Best Comedy. They split the category down the middle, it seems, which meant no award for Ayo Edebiri or Hannah Einbinder.

I’m including some pics of JAW, Ebon, Liza and Ayo in this post. Liza – who is married to the wonderful actor David Zayas – became the first Puerto Rican and Latina woman to win in that category (supporting Comedy) and, in her speech, she encouraged the Latin community to get out the vote in the election. She also wore a custom Christian Siriano – one of the lovely shades of green on the carpet.

Meanwhile, Ayo Edebiri was one of my picks for best-dressed of the Emmys. I loved her custom Bottega Veneta, it was such a sharp, great look for her.

It’s sort of amazing how Rita Ora & Taika Waititi feel so overexposed, and yet they’re really not everywhere constantly at this point. This is their first red carpet together in several months, and yet when they popped up at the Emmys, there was a collective groan of “not this again.” Anyway, these are photos of Rita and Taika at the Emmys and then at one of the after-parties (the black lace dress). Rita’s pink Emmy look was by Tamara Ralph. It’s actually a really great dress.
