Andrew Garfield Ayo Edebiri Julia Roberts

An Italian reporter excluded Ayo Edebiri from an insane question about BLM & MeToo

Last week, After the Hunt premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and the stars of the film did their first festival press junket. Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri did most of their media duties together, meaning they were all sitting in a row as entertainment journalists came in and asked them questions. Julia has been around the industry for 35 years, and in my opinion, Julia is extremely fond of her younger costars, Ayo in particular. Well, the three actors had to deal with one of the craziest questions ever during the Venice junket. It looked like Julia was ready to tussle with someone, but instead, Julia sat back and let Ayo defend herself in a really powerful way. Here’s the clip, I’ve cued it to the awful part:

The question was: “Now that the #MeToo era and the Black Lives Matter are done, what do we have to expect in Hollywood? And what we lost … with the politically correct era.” Ayo responded: “Yeah, I know that that’s not for me, and I don’t know if it’s purposeful it’s not for me, but I just am curious… I don’t think it’s done. I don’t think it’s done at all. I think maybe hashtags might not be used as much, but I do think that there’s work being done by activists, by people, every day, that’s beautiful, important work that’s not finished — that’s really, really, really active for a reason, ’cause this world is really charged. And that work isn’t finished at all.” Julia interjected with “It’s not done.” They handled that well, including Andrew, who wanted absolutely no part in dealing with that question in any way. So, that clip has been making the rounds for several days. Then the Italian reporter, Federica Polidoro, ended up posting a terrible Instagram in which she “defended” herself.

The Italian reporter whose interview with After the Hunt stars Ayo Edebiri, Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield went viral is breaking her silence. Journalist Federica Polidoro sparked backlash after excluding Edebiri, 29, from a question regarding the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements while speaking to the stars on ArtsLife Tv on Friday, Sept. 5.

Polidoro took to Instagram on Monday, Sept. 8 to write that she has “been subjected to personal insults and attacks because of a question that, for some reason, was not well received by some members of the public. I find it striking that those who unjustly accuse me of racism and consider themselves custodians of justice find acceptable violent language, personal attacks, and cyberbullying… I would like to clarify that, rather than focusing on the thoughtful responses of Ayo Edebiri, Julia Roberts, and Andrew Garfield, the discussion continues solely on how I should have phrased the question. All the contributions from those present were reported in full in the published interview, without any omissions.”

In response to the backlash, Polidoro wrote in her Instagram statement that she believes “censoring or delegitimizing questions considered ‘uncomfortable’ does not fall within the practice of democracy.”

The journalist also wrote that she has “interviewed people of every background and ethnicity, and my own family is multi-ethnic, matriarchal, and feminist, with a significant history of immigration” in response to people whom she opined have “unjustly accuse[d] me of racism.”

“I have collaborated for over twenty years with numerous national and international publications of all political orientations, always approaching my work with openness and professional rigor. In my view, the real racists are those who see racism everywhere and seek to muzzle journalism, limiting freedom of analysis, critical thinking, and the plurality of perspectives,” Polidoro continued.

She said, “Journalism’s role is to ask questions, even on delicate topics, with respect and responsibility. I will not tolerate or accept defamatory or violent language, and I reserve the right to seek legal protection against those who, in recent days, have chosen to hide behind the digital mob to insult and attack me instead of seeking a civil and constructive discussion.”

Does this woman not understand the difference between asking the white actors in particular “do you think we’re living in a post-MeToo and post-BLM world” versus “Now that the #MeToo era and the Black Lives Matter are done, what have we lost,” with the obvious implication of “what have we lost as white people,” since she was directing her question solely to Julia and Andrew. One question is thought-provoking and might inspire some interesting responses from white actors. The other question is a declarative (and incorrect) statement spoken through the prism of Eurocentric white supremacy. Anyway, Ayo is wonderful and I’m sorry she had to deal with that.

Ayo Edebiri Fashion Golden Globes Jean Smart Kathryn Hahn Kristen Bell Mikey Madison Mindy Kaling

Kristen Bell wore Ashi to the 2025 Golden Globes: liquid elegance?

Kristen Bell bugs me a lot. I think it’s her tendency to overshare coupled with her terrible “I don’t see color” children’s book. I have to give her props though for her excellent Ashi metallic gown last night, if not for her severe styling. Kristen was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, for her work in Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. A lot of people watched that, but I avoided it because I can’t stand her. Maybe I’ll get over that.

Jean Smart won in that category for Hacks. Hacks also took home Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy. This is Jean’s second Globe. She was in Rhea Costa. Queen.

I’m including presenter Mindy Kaling as she’s in Ashi too. Mindy’s gold strapless column gown was just as much of a knockout look as Kristen’s but Mindy’s hair and makeup was way better. Mindy is featured in Duchess Meghan’s upcoming cooking and lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan. She said on the red carpet that she was invited to be a guest on Meghan’s show when she was postpartum from her last baby and that “When you hang out with Meghan you know the food is going to be good.”

I would have made Ayo Edebiri the headliner for this post but there are hardly any photos of her (from our agencies) in this cool-looking Loewe suit. Ayo won a Globe in this category last year and she was nominated. A lot of people were saying she was channeling Julia Robert’s 1990 suit at the Globes. I see it!

Kathryn Hahn absolutely nailed the lead in Agatha All Along. I would have liked to have seen more recognition for that transcendent show, like this was the only nomination! Where were the nominations for Joe Locke and Patti LuPone? The writing was among the best I’ve ever watched in a series. I bought a damn t-shirt I loved this show so much. Kathryn was in Altuzzura. Somehow she makes this work. Look at this fierce bitch. She’s wearing a 90s belt!

I’m including Anora’s Mikey Madison here as she was also in a fabulous gold gown. Mikey is in Bottega Veneta. She was captivating in Anora. I really enjoyed that movie but I could tell a man wrote it. There were decisions that I did not think Mikey’s character would have made. That’s all I’ll say about it as I know a lot of you haven’t seen it yet. Mikey was nominated in the Best Actress category, which went to Demi Moore. I hope Mikey gets an Oscar nomination, she deserves it.

Ayo Edebiri Ebon Moss-Bachrach Emmy Awards Jeremy Allen White Liza Colon-Zayas

‘The Bear’ picked up three major Emmy Awards, but it did not win Best Comedy

People always complain about The Bear being mislabeled a “comedy.” The assumption being, I guess, that it’s some kind of category fraud for the purposes of awards. I saw so many people worried that The Bear would end up winning Best Comedy at last night’s Emmy Awards, but it sort of worked out in the end. Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colon-Zayas picked up Emmys for The Bear, while Jean Smart won another Emmy for Best Comedic lead actress in Hacks. Then Hacks won Best Comedy. They split the category down the middle, it seems, which meant no award for Ayo Edebiri or Hannah Einbinder.

I’m including some pics of JAW, Ebon, Liza and Ayo in this post. Liza – who is married to the wonderful actor David Zayas – became the first Puerto Rican and Latina woman to win in that category (supporting Comedy) and, in her speech, she encouraged the Latin community to get out the vote in the election. She also wore a custom Christian Siriano – one of the lovely shades of green on the carpet.

Meanwhile, Ayo Edebiri was one of my picks for best-dressed of the Emmys. I loved her custom Bottega Veneta, it was such a sharp, great look for her.

Ayo Edebiri

Ayo Edebiri covers Vanity Fair, talks about Jeremy Allen White’s blue eyes

I doubt I’m alone in this, but I get so much joy from watching Ayo Edebiri’s ascent. She’s not a nepo baby, she worked hard, she’s extremely talented and she’s remained true to who she is at a fundamental level (a very eccentric person). She’s not someone burdened with angst about her fame, although she acknowledges that fame has drawbacks. But she’s enjoying so much of this – the work, the fashion, the awards shows, the friendships. It’s cool to see a positive personal story come out of an “overnight success.” Ayo has already picked up tons of awards for The Bear, and she covers the latest issue of Vanity Fair to talk about her life these days. Some highlights:

Always working: “I was 17 when I went to college [and] I was really poor. I was always working.” Working at a call center asking NYU alums for money; as a babysitter for NYC families; at a student café in the math building. “I barista’d at this random coffee shop for three weeks, and then our boss was skimming money so I left, and then I did some baristing at ABC Kitchen. I loved being a barista because I like order. There’s something kind of satisfying about getting it right.” It wasn’t long before Boston started to feel like small-town USA. “When I went back I was like, ‘What is this? Am I in the sticks? We’re closing businesses at 10 p.m.? I’m embarrassed.’ ”

She grew up Pentecostal: While she enjoyed singing with the youth choir and bonding with other kids, “it was horrible for my anxiety. I was petrified of death. I was petrified of the rapture.” At NYU, she struggled to reconcile the Church’s idea that her gay and Muslim friends wouldn’t make it to heaven. “It was genuinely breaking my brain and giving me so much stress and sadness,” she says. “I was just like, ‘I need a break.’ ” Save for the occasional trip to church with her parents, she’s still on one.

Jeremy Allen White on Ayo: “We really enjoy each other in life, on camera and off camera. I have a tremendous amount of respect for her as a person, but also as an artist. And so I hope that sort of that kind of thing shines through on camera between Carm and Syd. Syd is always able to…I don’t know, to deliver something different to Carmy, and she’s usually right. And I guess I think Ayo is also usually right.”

Ayo on JAW: “Work can be a very intimate thing and a very personal thing and a very emotional thing, and I think when you’re also in industries that are creative or creative adjacent, I think there’s something that also invokes feelings of passion. Also, boy’s got some beautiful blue eyes. You know what I mean? Those are eyes you want to project onto.”

Dealing with the fickleness of audiences: “People could like me today and hate me tomorrow, and then like me two weeks after.”

The beef with J.Lo years after Ayo referred to her as scammer: “That would be like Mr. Bean and Mick Jagger beefing and I’m obviously Mr. Bean. She’s J.Lo!” On SNL, Edebiri poked fun at the ordeal in a sketch, and days later, Lopez told a reporter that the actor had apologized before the show. “She was very chill and nice about it,” Edebiri says.

Politics: Outside of voting, she doesn’t consider herself to be all that politically engaged, “but I think my standard is pretty high. I grew up in a family where my parents were always volunteering at polling places and always making calls and stuff. I have memories of doing my homework at call centers for Elizabeth Warren and Obama.”

[From Vanity Fair]

There’s a cool story about Ayo hanging out with Will Poulter in London on the day the Emmy nominations came out, and it feels like she was trying to say something about their friendship. Of course, there’s mounting evidence that Ayo and Jeremy Allen White are dating – they were recently spotted looking coupled-up at a baseball game, and JAW clearly adores her (and he’s divorced now). Anyway, she seems cool and like she’s enjoying the ride. I hope she keeps this energy!

Anna Wintour ariana grande Ayo Edebiri Fashion Josh O'Connor Met Gala Taylor Russell

Ariana Grande wore Loewe to the 2024 Met Gala: was it the worst of the Loewe looks?

This post is for all of the Met Gala people who wore Loewe. Loewe showed off a wide array of looks and both of their big brand ambassadors were in attendance too. Ariana Grande is not affiliated with Loewe and it feels weird that she went with them for her Met Gala look: a pale dress in white or maybe a very light grey-blue, with the butterflies on her face. Like, think of all the directions Ari could have gone which would have complimented her style perfectly. Instead we got this.

Anna Wintour surprised me by going with Loewe, and this feels so phoned-in. “Just give me a coat with some tulips, darling.”

Taylor Russell’s dress was partially made out of wood. The top part is some kind of special treated wood, then there’s a fabric skirt, obviously. It looks really cool!

I genuinely thought more people would interpret the theme like this, with some kind of floral vibe. Ayo Edebiri’s colorful skirt was a welcome respite from all the beige.

Greta Lee is one of the faces of Loewe and she repped them hard throughout the awards season. Personally, I don’t think they’ve given their brand ambassador some of their best looks, and here’s more evidence of that.

Ayo Edebiri Colman Domingo Fashion Greta Lee Melissa McCarthy Reese Witherspoon SAGs

Ayo Edebiri wore Luar to the SAG Awards: super-cute or too much fabric?

Ayo Edebiri continued her wonderful awards-season run at the SAG Awards, where she picked up the actress award for The Bear, then the show won Best Ensemble. Ayo has now won an Emmy, Critics Choice, Golden Globe and SAG Award. Her life has changed dramatically in just six weeks – it’s really something. Ayo has been having a lot of fun with her awards-season fashion too, she hasn’t stuck with one designer or one particular style. I kind of think this Luar ensemble was a miss though – it’s giving droopy Amish? But whatever, she’s young and she’s experimenting.

Greta Lee is another experimenter – I’m surprised she didn’t wear another look from Loewe (she’s basically a brand ambassador now), but this is from The Row. This would look soooo much better without the gloves.

Colman Domingo is really the best-dressed man at every awards show. He wore Off-White!

Reese Witherspoon wore Elie Saab. She looks great – flattering dress, great color, good hair & makeup. Simple.

Melissa McCarthy wore Puey Quinones and she had one of the best jokes of the night, presenting with Billie Eilish. This was such a good bit!

Ayo Edebiri BAFTAs Prince William royals

This is the face Prince William made when he met Ayo Edebiri & Phoebe Dynevor

Here are more photos of Prince William, backstage at last night’s BAFTAs. He went solo, was seated next to Cate Blanchett during the ceremony, then he was taken around to meet of the beautiful young actresses, because that wasn’t obvious at all! Remember how often, in 2023, William was being branded as a “hunk” and a “hot single dad”? It kept happening, over and over in palace-approved stories. As you can see, he spent some time last night trying to chat up Phoebe Dynevor, Ayo Edebiri, Sophie Wilde and Mia McKenna Bruce. As you can see, William was not very successful. Ayo’s face in particular betrays just how badly this went. Still, the Mail hilariously tried to tell everyone that Hot Single Dad William really won over these starlets!

Prince William won over BAFTA winners last night as he met with rising star nominees and other people who had picked up gongs at the award show. Making a dapper appearance at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Prince of Wales, who made a last-minute solo appearance while his wife Kate remains at home recovering from abdominal surgery, chatted with the nominees for the Rising Star award – plus winner Mia McKenna-Bruce.

The father-of-three, 41, shook hands with the star-struck actresses, who also included The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, Phoebe Dynevor and Sophie Wilde, before revealing he had not seen any of the films they had starred in.

Earlier in the night he apologised for confirming his attendance to the ceremony late in the day, and for also not watching many of the films – noting that, understandably, he has ‘other things’ on his mind.

However, ever the entertainer, William kept things light despite a difficult few months for the royal family and told Mia McKenna Bruce, who stars in How to Have Sex, that she looked like she had ‘a lot of fun’ making the film.

As William walked into the green room following the award ceremony, he smiled as he greeted the three young actresses.

‘It was very close between all of you,’ he told the talents, before turning to Mia to congratulate her. He then told her: ‘I haven’t yet watched your film. I think it looked like you had a lot of fun all the way through’.

After revealing he hasn’t had time to ‘get through’ many of the nominated films, William said: ‘It is a very very strong year for categories.’

[From The Daily Mail]

“The father-of-three, 41, shook hands with the star-struck actresses” – they were not star-struck, they looked disturbed by his behavior and mannerisms. These photos went viral last night (along with my tweet with the Michael Sheen photo) and it was yet another moment where non-royal-watchers were talking about William’s awkwardness, weirdness and how he always manages to fall flat whenever he’s trying to impress women. It was also funny to watch all of the behind-the-scenes videos of no one in the BAFTA auditorium clapping for him or acknowledging him at all. How embarrassing.
