Billie Eilish responds to criticism of her Met Gala look: that’s AI, I was in Europe

At the Met Gala in 2023

One of the celeb looks we didn’t cover from last week’s Met Gala was Billie Eilish. Why? Because she wasn’t there! But that didn’t stop people from playing with AI to place Billie at the event and proceeding to trash the look. What a lovely snapshot of our culture. So this week Billie got wind of people trolling her rose-adorned suit for the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style theme — you know, the outfit she never wore — and made a little “WTF?!?” video that went up on her Instagram Stories on Wednesday. Presumably she was filming from Europe, where she’s on her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, and in fact had a show in Amsterdam the night of the first Monday in May, an ocean and several time zones away from the Met Gala.

Billie Eilish is responding to criticism of her Met Gala look, noting that she did not even attend the May 5 event.

The singer, 23, took to Instagram Stories Wednesday to discuss an AI-generated image of her that was being circulated online.

“Seeing people talk about what I wore to this year’s Met Gala being trash — I wasn’t there,” Eilish said as she ate an ice cream cone.

“That’s AI. I had a show in Europe that night. Let me be! I wasn’t even there!” she added.

The star is currently on her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour and was performing in Amsterdam the night of the Met Gala.

The tour, which kicked off in September, runs through July. Her album of the same name arrived in May 2024.

Whelp, I guess “fake AI pic of a celeb attending the Met Gala” is now a part of the annual soiree. Last year Katy Perry got the treatment, when people dressed her up in a couple different designs for the 2024 theme, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. With the Katy photos, I couldn’t help but snark at the fact that the technical wizardry of AI still spat out the wrong carpet backdrop. In the Billie image that might be Photoshop, it’s hard to tell.

As for Billie’s reaction, I feel for her on this one! It’s reasonable to be appraised for something you did do, but no one should have to face flak for something that’s made up! By someone else! That’s like a friend being mad at you for something you did to them… in a dream. Life is insane enough as it is these days, let’s please only hold each other accountable for things that actually happen in the real, waking world. And let’s also get to discussing the truly important things — like what is this ice cream cone Billie is feasting on? It looks like chocolate, but I want to know more!

Billie Eilish reacts to people trashing her Met Gala outfit this year, which was AI-generated as she wasn’t there:

Demi Moore Dogs Fashion Met Gala

Demi Moore’s dog Pilaf got a little matching tie to go with her Met Gala gown

Demi Moore was one of many celebs clad in Thom Browne at Monday’s Met Gala, but her look was truly unlike any other. Her gown was literally a necktie! The bodice from the waist up was the knot, the sculpted arc framing her head was the loop around the neck, and it was hard to see in motion and on the blue carpet, but the front and back of the dress were cut to perfect chevron points. I thought it was a fun interpretation of the menswear/suiting part of the theme, and also kept up Demi’s streak of wearing structural pieces to the event. Since Monday night, Demi has been sharing behind-the-scenes pics and video of getting ready for the big soiree, and that’s how we learned that Thom Browne made one additional piece with the necktie gown: a little matching tie for Demi’s constant companion, her mighty two-pound dog Pilaf!

Demi Moore’s dog Pilaf might not have scored an invitation to the 2025 Met Gala, but the pup was more than ready for a night out at the event.

The Substance actress, 62, gave her Instagram followers a behind-the-scenes look at getting ready for the high-fashion event, which took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 5.

In the videos, Moore was recorded while getting ready in hair and makeup with her glam team before hitting the steps of the Met. During the preparations, Pilaf was responsible for keeping the actress levelheaded.

“A look back at yesterday’s #MetGala prep! With my emotional support @pilaf.littlemouse,” Moore captioned one of the videos, which featured Pilaf sitting calmly in her lap.

After completing hair and makeup, Moore got dressed in her black necktie gown by Thom Browne — and Pilaf had her own matching version created by the designer for fashion’s biggest night.

“@thombrowne made Pilaf her very own custom look, of course,” Moore wrote over an Instagram Stories video of her fully dressed in her complete Met Gala look, holding Pilaf as she unboxed a mini black necktie that matched her dress. Moore quickly placed the matching tie on Pilaf, cradling her and gushing over how “gorgeous” she looked in the designer item.

Moore’s look for the evening was far more ornate — according to Vogue, the actress’s custom Thom Browne gown contained over 1,400,000 beads, 22,000 pieces of black rectangle sequins, 103,500 pieces of black cut beads and 1,093,500 pieces of black bugle beads. The garment — meant to resemble a men’s necktie — took a total of 7,600 hours to make.

The actress additionally wore black and white pom-pom heels to match the black and white of the dress, and accessorized the look with a pair of diamond-encrusted bracelets and diamond chandelier earrings.

Moore’s look offered a unique take on the 2025 Met Gala theme and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s corresponding spring 2025 exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The dress code for this year was “Tailored for You,” which spotlights the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting.

[From People]

Is it friggin’ adorable? Yes! But now I’m simmering with indignant rage, as I’m sure you all are too. Why didn’t Pilaf attend the gala?!?! She’s a Dogue cover star, for woof’s sake! No really, this is the dog who goes everywhere with her person, even as eight canine siblings get left at home. (I still wonder how those family dynamics play out when everyone is together, but I digress…) Between being glued to her mama’s side, and a fashion icon in her own right, I think the world deserves answers about Pilaf’s absence! Sorry to raise my voice, but I’m barking mad. I mean, it’s not like she could attend the annual Pet Gala instead, because that’s an adoption event and she already has a person. Unless, of course, staying back at the hotel was Pilaf’s choice. Maybe she didn’t want to deal with the other bitches there. In which case, thank dog Demi did the benevolent thing by sharing pics of the duo in their matching necktie garb. And I guess now’s the time to start pitching Anna Wintour for some kind of animal related/inclusive theme for next year’s shindig.

Anna Wintour Doechii Jeremy Allen White Met Gala Pharrell Williams Sabrina Carpenter zendaya

Zendaya wore a crisp white Louis Vuitton suit to the 2025 Met Gala

It feels foretold at this point that Zendaya is always going to make the best-dressed list wherever she goes and whatever she wears. She manages to never feel same-y though, which is a gift. That being said, Zendaya interpreted the Black Dandy theme the same as many other women, and I kind of thought other women had more fun with it. Zendaya’s custom Louis Vuitton look was a tribute to Diana Ross in Mahogany. I get that and it totally works! I kind of wish Zendaya had juiced up the look with more jewelry, especially brooches on her lapel.

It was a huge night for Louis Vuitton, especially with Pharrell Williams as co-chair this year (Pharrell is now designing for LV). Pharrell and LV were allergic to pants for women, save Zendaya. Doechii got a very cute shorts-suit ensemble. This was so fun!

Sabrina Carpenter was pantsless in LV, as was Blackpink’s Lisa. Both ensembles are… interesting, I guess.

Pharrell Williams didn’t want his wife Helen Lasichanh to wear pants either! I’m sure LV’s hosiery department will get a huge boost from the gala. Pharrell’s jacket had a pearl “pinstripe.” It was really cool.

Jeremy Allen White in LV – he could have done so much more. There needed to be more of a flare on those pants, and the jacket should have been tighter.

Anna Wintour wore LV as well – a tribute to Virgil Abloh’s cloud coat. I have to give Anna a lot of credit for this year’s theme – it could have come across as pandering and a lot of people could have interpreted the theme in really offensive ways, but this ended up being a great gala which really celebrated the history of Black fashion.

Anne Hathaway Madonna Met Gala Nicole Kidman Shakira

Anne Hathaway wore a great Carolina Herrera ensemble to the Met Gala

I would have loved to see Anne Hathaway in a very sharp suit with fabulous brooches, but we got this instead – Anne in Carolina Herrera, with Bulgari jewels and a high ponytail. I actually like this look a lot – she looks amazing and timeless. But yeah, it didn’t have much to do with the theme.

Madonna in Tom Ford. Call me crazy, but she nailed this, right? Totally Cab Calloway.

And here’s Nicole Kidman – I was very surprised to see her out this year, but she seemed to be enjoying herself and she seemed to think her Balenciaga fit with the theme (it did not, but it’s fine). The most interesting part is that she’s seemingly chopped off her weave and she now has a “skaterboi” haircut.

And finally, Shakira had no idea what she was doing in this Prabal Gurung. She just thought “Met Gala = big gown.”

Bad Bunny Ciara gabrielle union Halle Berry Hunter Schafer Met Gala

Halle Berry wore LaQuan Smith to the Met Gala: what in the world is this look?

I hate to say this because I usually think so highly of Halle Berry’s beauty and style, but I absolutely loathed Halle’s Met Gala look this year. Halle is all about the history of Black fashion and Halle IS part of that history. She could have done so many different things with the theme, and instead, she wore this LaQuan Smith which is… just bad. It’s unflattering, the design itself is not good (to put it mildly) and Halle – one of the most beautiful women in the world – looks tired, drawn and cartoonish.

Ciara & Russell Wilson- she also wore LaQuan Smith. I thought they were one of the best coordinated couple-looks. They looked amazing.

Hunter Schafer wore Prada and she was widely cited as one of the best on-theme looks of the night. She really worked this!!

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade, both in Prada. I feel like they could have and should have gone even bigger here. This feels so subdued.

Jeremy O. Harris nailed the Met Gala theme expertly with a tribute to the original dandy

This is a post dedicated to some of my favorite men’s looks at the Met Gala. Jeremy O. Harris is the author of Slave Play, a controversial Tony-nominated Broadway play that looks at interracial relationships under the lens of slavery. I guess that’s how I would describe it, although I saw the jaw dropping HBO Max “making of” documentary and there’s no way I can do it justice. He absolutely nailed the Black Dandyism theme with this tribute to the original Black Dandies. He should know, he wrote an editorial for Vogue about the theme. I believe he’s in Margiela. (Update: It’s Balmain!)

Oh…my man knows…

Actor Keith Powers was another one of my favorite looks. He was in Boss! I love how this looks like a real suit that someone would wear back in the day and not a costume.

This is Caleb McLaughlin, he’s 23 now and he stars on Stranger Things! I didn’t realize this was him and I posted his photo on Twitter because he’s gorgeous frankly. This could do without the blue gloves, but that’s such a minor complaint. (Update: He’s in Dior!)

Damson Idris is in the F1 movie with Brad Pitt that’s been taking forever. It will be out late next month. He was in a bedazzled helmet and race suit which tore away to reveal a fabulous burgundy 70s-inspired Tommy Hilfiger suit. This was an excellent look and great promotion.

kendall jenner Kim Kardashian kylie jenner Met Gala

Kim Kardashian wore alligator Chrome Hearts to the Met Gala: eh or fine?

Controversial opinion: while the Kardashian-Jenners were far from the best-dressed at the Met Gala, they were also far from the worst-dressed. They all made an effort to interpret the Black Dandy theme, to varying degrees of success. Kim Kardashian decided to go with a custom Chrome Hearts two-piece alligator-leather look, a low-cut skirt and tailored top. Her hat is the best part – she’s done this a few times at the gala, where she chooses looks which “hide” her face. It’s an interesting choice for the biggest fashion event of the year. I actually think Kim interpreted the theme the best out of the family.

Kylie Jenner attended the gala without her longtime boyfriend Timothee Chalamet. He stayed at home because of basketball (the NBA Eastern Conference). Kylie’s look was Ferragamo – it was sort of on theme, I guess. Meanwhile, Kendall wore a custom Torishéju Dumi. Her people explained that she was referencing the 1920s Harlem Renaissance and Gladys Bentley. As I said… this family actually tried and they were somewhat thoughtful with the theme.
