Jeremy O. Harris nailed the Met Gala theme expertly with a tribute to the original dandy

This is a post dedicated to some of my favorite men’s looks at the Met Gala. Jeremy O. Harris is the author of Slave Play, a controversial Tony-nominated Broadway play that looks at interracial relationships under the lens of slavery. I guess that’s how I would describe it, although I saw the jaw dropping HBO Max “making of” documentary and there’s no way I can do it justice. He absolutely nailed the Black Dandyism theme with this tribute to the original Black Dandies. He should know, he wrote an editorial for Vogue about the theme. I believe he’s in Margiela. (Update: It’s Balmain!)

Oh…my man knows…

Actor Keith Powers was another one of my favorite looks. He was in Boss! I love how this looks like a real suit that someone would wear back in the day and not a costume.

This is Caleb McLaughlin, he’s 23 now and he stars on Stranger Things! I didn’t realize this was him and I posted his photo on Twitter because he’s gorgeous frankly. This could do without the blue gloves, but that’s such a minor complaint. (Update: He’s in Dior!)

Brian Tyree Henry was in Orange Culture, in a look he designed himself. He ate, as they say!

Damson Idris is in the F1 movie with Brad Pitt that’s been taking forever. It will be out late next month. He was in a bedazzled helmet and race suit which tore away to reveal a fabulous burgundy 70s-inspired Tommy Hilfiger suit. This was an excellent look and great promotion.

Speaking of original dandies, here’s Dapper Dan in a zoot suit of his own design! It features a Sankofa symbol on the back, which is fitting.

Brian Tyree Henry confirms that Duchess Meghan sent him an As Ever gift box

In March, Brian Tyree Henry went on Kelly Clarkson’s show to promote his AppleTV series, Dope Thief. Brian is a really good talk-show guest – he’s funny, he’s into pop culture, he’s friendly with some big stars and he likes to gossip. He ended up telling a really sweet story about working with Elizabeth Olsen and how they both became obsessed with With Love, Meghan, which had premiered several weeks earlier. Olsen and Henry were so obsessed with WLM that Olsen made her own version of “flower sprinkles” for Brian for his wrap gift. Basically, he came across as a huge Meghan fan and like he was all-in on everything Meghan was doing. He also seemed to be pitching himself for a guest appearance on With Love, Meghan! Well, Meghan obviously saw the interview, and Meghan sent both Brian and Elizabeth some As Ever boxes. From Brian’s recent Variety interview:

Variety: It’s gotten out that you and your “Panic Carefully” co-star Elizabeth Olsen became very invested in watching Meghan Markle’s “With Love, Meghan” Netflix series while you were filming together in London. I’m told the Duchess of Sussex sent you a care package as a thank you when she heard?

BTH: She did! She sent me and Elizabeth Olsen wonderful, wonderful — as ever — boxes. The care that goes into what this woman does is not missed on me at all. I started my day off with a wonderful hibiscus tea that she sent. I believe a hand calligraphy note was on the box. And let me tell you something, those jams be jamming. Like, the preserves are where it’s at. And, of course, there’s flower sprinkles, which I don’t know why I’m being so cautious using! Because I want to use them right. Like, I don’t just want to put it on fries, you know what I mean? It has to be the right thing, I don’t know why. But I’m going to support this woman. She has found her niche, and it’s delightful. In a word, it’s delightful. It’s really, really kind for her to do that. And when I got back from London and saw this, I immediately called Elizabeth and was like, “Did you get your box?!” We’re both incredibly grateful, and it’s really cool.

[From Variety]

This is so lovely. I know I pitch a lot of ideas for the Sussexes, but I hope Meghan hears me on this one: get Brian on WLM!! He would love to make pasta with you, or arrange flowers or anything, really. He’s charming and I love how he’s all-in on Meghan – “She has found her niche, and it’s delightful.” That’s how I feel too! I still don’t understand why so many people are so hateful about Meghan’s cooking show and lifestyle brand. If it’s not your jam, so be it and just continue on with your life. Like… there are grown-ass people throwing tantrums about flower sprinkles and jam. And the jam is amazing!! Anyway, I love that Olsen and Henry got As Ever boxes. Good job to the As Ever team!

Brian Tyree Henry & Elizabeth Olsen are obsessed with ‘With Love, Meghan’

In 2023, Brian Tyree Henry got an Oscar nomination for his role in Causeway. He knew that the nomination was the win, and he used that entire awards-season run to take his career to the next level. He’s stayed moisturized, booked and busy ever since, and he’s currently promoting AppleTV’s Dope Thief. Which is why he appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week. At one point in the interview, he was asked about the film he’s currently working on, Panic Carefully, with Julia Roberts, Eddie Redmayne and Elizabeth Olsen. Apparently, Brian and Elizabeth (he calls her Lizzie) hit it off right away and they immediately became besties. They bonded over their shared taste in lifestyle shows, apparently. So all this month, they’ve been obsessively watching With Love, Meghan, and Brian excitedly told Kelly all about it:

I like that he describes WLM as “the new Meghan Markle-slash-Meghan, Duchess of Sussex show where she’s also, like, Martha Stewart.” That should absolutely be the tagline. Brian says that he and Lizzie were like “we need to get in the flower sprinkles game” and Lizzie figured out a way to make flower sprinkles, and that was part of her wrap gift to Brian. He also says “Meghan is bomb with calligraphy” and so Lizzie also had her husband do the calligraphy for his note. Hilariously, he said that he and Lizzie are trying to get on With Love, Meghan. But… but… I thought the show was a flop?? I thought it was poorly reviewed! I thought everyone was hate-watching it?? Yeah – it was always going to be a sweet, gentle lifestyle show and I think it’s so cool that an Oscar-nominated actor is using his talk-show time to discuss his newfound obsession with flower sprinkles and calligraphy. I hope Meghan invites him and Elizabeth Olsen on WLM!

2023 Oscars Open Post & Live-Blog: Hosted by Brian Tyree Henry

Here is our official 2023 Oscars Open Post, hosted by Brian Tyree Henry. Brian is nominated tonight in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in Causeway. He hasn’t gotten much attention because Supporting Actor is basically the only category with a sure-thing winner: Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Still, Brian has been enjoying his awards season and his first Oscar nomination. He recently spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about dressing for the awards season and how much he loves wearing “vibrant” colors. He also tries to support Black designers and Black-owned businesses, plus he doesn’t like wearing baggy clothes – he wants to emphasize his “curves” too. He seems like such a special guy.

The Oscars start at 8 pm EST on ABC. Here in America, we’re in the first day of Daylight Savings “spring forward,” so bear with us if we’re a bit out of sorts. This isn’t just the Open Post, it’s our live blog and we’ll update this post with winners and highlights. We’ll also be tweeting about the Oscars – you can follow me at @KaiseratCB, you can follow CB at @Celebitchy.

Brad Pitt steps out for the LA ‘Bullet Train’ premiere amid whitewashing controversy

Last night was the big LA premiere of Bullet Train. Brad Pitt was there in his baggy green suit, with an incredibly “fresh” looking face. Aaron Taylor Johnson was there, in heels and leather (and his wife Sam wasn’t there). Brian Tyree Henry looked snazzy in a really great cream patterned coat, which was probably way too heavy for an LA premiere. Bad Bunny wore a severe black suit. Simu Liu was there with his girlfriend Jade Bender.

The only real fashion highlight (beyond Tyree Henry’s coat) was Joey King in this Cong Tri ensemble. I don’t even like this look, but I like that she’s been trying different things for this promotional tour, including really strong hair and makeup styling. The skirt is my favorite part of this whole look. Joey walked the carpet with her fiance Steven Piet.

Meanwhile, Bullet Train is currently mired in some whitewashing controversy. In the original Kōtarō Isaka story, several of the main characters are Japanese. In the film adaptation, those characters are played by white actors. Now, Isaka has also said that his characters are just that, characters and not real people, and that the casting doesn’t bother him. But obviously, Hollywood has an incredibly problematic history of whitewashing Asian and Black characters, and many of us could see this specific Bullet Train controversy coming from a mile away. The whole movie is supposed to be set in Japan on some kind of magical Japanese train where there are no Japanese people? Come on. Note: Brad Pitt didn’t actually produce Bullet Train. He was merely cast in a whitewashed film.

Salma Hayek wore Gucci to the LA premiere of ‘The Eternals’: gorgeous?

I covered Angelina Jolie separately, but the rest of the photos from The Eternals’ premiere are worth discussing! The Eternals has such a big cast, and all of the major players came out to LA for the premiere. The promotional tour really begins now, and I’m really excited to hear from the cast, which includes Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry and more.

Salma brought her daughter Valentina to the premiere, which keeps it on-theme with Jolie bringing her kids too. It struck me that Salma and Angelina probably couldn’t keep their kids away – Marvel forced them to keep the details of the film under wraps, so their kids probably just wanted to see the latest Marvel movie anyway. Salma wore Gucci, a very sexy look. Valentina is so pretty! She reminds me of Kat Dennings.

Gemma Chan wore Louis Vuitton – a very big, over-the-top look. It’s great for this premiere though, and I get the feeling that Gemma (more than anyone else) is more “the lead” of the ensemble.
