Here are more photos from the Vogue World event in London last night, which was a premiere and preview of London Fashion Week. The attendance was spectacular and allllll of the British fashion girls and It Girls came out. Simone Ashley was serving LEGS in this Tamara Ralph Haute Couture look, which is bonkers. Ordinarily, I’m not into all of these “netting” styles, but look closely – that’s not netting, it’s all made of pearls. Incredible.

Sienna Miller wore Schiaparelli Haute Couture – she’s knocked up, obviously, and she looks like a swan. Or a goose. Or an ostrich?

Jodie Turner Smith wore Viktor & Rolf. She was one of two women (that I saw) wearing panties as outerwear. I mean, she’s Jodie and she kills most looks, but I would have chosen differently for her, if I was styling her.

The NY premiere of ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ definitely had a weird vibe

Genuinely surprised to see that some of Don’t Worry Darling’s cast came out for last night’s New York premiere. As I said earlier, it seemed like DWD’s promotion had become “The Olivia Wilde Show,” considering she was doing a lot of solo appearances and she’s the one on magazine covers. Obviously, Chris Pine and Florence Pugh didn’t come to the premiere. Florence’s excuse is that she’s filming Dune 2 in Europe. Pine’s excuse is that the last time he made an appearance on behalf of DWD, Harry Styles spat on him.

Meanwhile, Gemma Chan came out for the premiere, and she wore a surprisingly good Louis Vuitton dress. I generally think LV does Gemma dirty, but this is lovely. It’s hard to mess it up when you’re dealing with someone as beautiful as Gemma.

Dita Von Teese turned up to the premiere, wearing a completely normal Jenny Packham. This isn’t retro at all?

Olivia Wilde wore Saint Laurent, and Harry Styles wore Gucci. We haven’t heard much about them as a “couple” since the Venice debacle, where the rest of the cast had to take pains to keep Florence Pugh, Olivia and Harry separate. It was definitely a weird vibe – Florence had every reason to avoid Olivia, but the fact that Olivia and Harry weren’t photographed side-by-side was… odd. At the New York premiere, they once again avoided posing side-by-side, although they did interact briefly (and coldly) on the carpet. Ten bucks says they announce a split in October.

Gemma Chan wore a lingerie-inspired Louis Vuitton in Cannes: ugh or amazing?

Here are some photos from the final events and red carpets of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Almost all of these photos are from Friday night’s premiere of Mother and Son. Gemma Chan was there, I believe because she’s an ambassador/model for L’Oreal. She wore this Louis Vuitton gown which… God, I hate this. I’ve been following Gemma’s career and her style for a few years now, and I appreciate that she likes offbeat looks and that she rarely does princess styles. But… this wasn’t it. LV made a naturally elegant woman look so trashy!

Michelle Williams wore Chanel on the red carpet and at the photocall for Showing Up, her latest film. I’ve really come around on Michelle in every way, to the point where I’m really into her hair these days. To be fair, back in the day, her pixie cut was often too white-blonde and I never really liked how she styled her pixie. But she seems to have figured out the color, the cut and the style. She looks great! And yes, she’s pregnant. That Chanel dress looks so comfortable for a pregnant lady.

Helen Mirren wore Dolce & Gabbana. The dress itself is… kind of great, actually, and I think it’s cool that a woman with white hair wore silver, that visual is kind of awesome. But I hate Helen’s scraped back hair! Oh my God, it’s so unflattering!

Andie McDowell wore Christian Dior. She’s also been grey-silver for a few years and she looks great. This dress is fantastic too.

Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr. to star in Crazy Rich Asians spinoff

The Crazy Rich Asians movie, based on the book series of the same name, was a box office hit in 2018, grossing $238.5 worldwide. It was the first Hollywood movie with an all Asian ensemble cast since The Joy Luck Club came out in 1993. There are three books in the series, and the sequels were immediately green-lit based on the success of the first movie. They planned to shoot the two sequels back-to-back, but in 2019 things got held up when writers walked over a pay dispute. It seems like things are finally back on track after two and a half years, since they just hired a new writer. So we’ll get those sequels eventually, but now a spinoff movie focused on Gemma Chan’s character is coming too?

The Crazy Rich Asians universe is expanding.

A spinoff of the 2018 romantic comedy is in early development at Warner Bros. and will focus on a new love story between Nick’s cousin Astrid Leong-Teo (Gemma Chan) and Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.), according to Deadline.

A rep for Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Based on Kevin Kwan’s second book in the series, China Rich Girlfriend, the film will follow the romance between Astrid and her first love Charlie, to whom she was previously engaged until her parents broke them up as they didn’t see him as a suitable partner.

The studio reportedly jumped on the project after a pitch from writer Jason Kim (Girls, Barry), who will pen the spinoff.

Although he was intended for a larger role in the movie, Shum Jr., 40, appeared in a mid-credits scene of Crazy Rich Asians, his character reuniting with Astrid at Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick’s (Henry Golding) engagement party.

Astrid left her husband Michael (Pierre Png) earlier in the movie after finding out he was having an affair. In the book, Charlie helped her investigate Michael’s infidelity, and although they filmed more with Shum Jr. than what made it into the movie, Director Jon M. Chu previously explained to Entertainment Weekly why they had to cut their storyline down.

“What we put in the movie was great — they actually dance together — and it was so awesome, and Harry’s so charming and so lovable,” Chu, 42, said in 2018. “But the problem was, it made Astrid feel like she was leaving Michael for Charlie, and we didn’t have enough room to expand on the idea. We just had to stay focused. Ultimately it’s about her independence, so that scene was in there all the way until the very end. When we took it out, Astrid’s journey became stronger. It was about her, not about her finding love.”

I read the book series years ago and although Rachel (Constance Wu’s character) is definitely the “everywoman” and reader’s entry point into the crazy rich world, Astrid is definitely a main character too. There are a lot of chapters throughout the series focused on her, her marriage, and her renewed romance with Charlie. But I can see why they think that might be too much story for a ~90 minute movie where they have to focus on Rachel and Nick as well. Astrid is an interesting character and Gemma Chan has a compelling presence. She’s mysterious and collected in a way that’s perfect for Astrid and makes you want to know more. Gemma is also a pretty big deal right now coming off the The Eternals and its eventual sequel, so it makes sense that they would want to center a spinoff around her.

I’m actually a bit more excited for this than for the sequels. I preferred Astrid’s storyline in the books and I think I prefer Gemma Chan’s acting to Constance Wu’s. Even before she was revealed to be a bit of a jerk, I found Constance Wu’s whole vibe a bit grating. I like the Rachel character and Constance was well cast in some ways, but every time she spoke in the movie, her voice took me out of it. China Rich Girlfriend has been in development hell for so long, I wonder if that or the spinoff will come out first.

Emma Stone wore a Louis Vuitton slipdress to the Met Gala: why??

The Louis Vuitton people were some of the first people on the Met Gala carpet and I have no idea why! LV screwed it up, as they usually do. We should have known as soon as Emma Stone walked out of the hotel in this simple white slipdress. I mean, it’s not hideous at all, but for the Met Gala? For “gilded glamour,” you’re going to give Emma Stone this little slipdress?

Chloe Moretz had my favorite Louis Vuitton. It seemed more like an interpretation of that famous Sarah Jessica Parker Met Gala look, but I enjoyed the vibe. The coat is great.

Gemma Chan in an absolute disaster. My God.

Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas. They never came out and said “we’re expecting again,” but they seem fine with the conversation. Sophie is a lovely pregnant lady and her dress looks comfortable. That’s all I’ll say.

Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton. My second favorite LV look after Chloe’s. It is genuinely glamorous.

Gemma Chan covers the latest issue of Porter Magazine, net-a-porter.com’s in-house magazine. Gemma is mostly promoting The Eternals, but she has other films coming out over the next six months or so too. Everything is coming up Gemma: she’s got a very high heatscore these days, and after years of slowly building a career, things are suddenly happening all at once. The Porter editorial is gorgeous, although I’ve never seen a bad photo of Gemma. I don’t think she takes bad photos, ever. Gemma chatted with Porter about representation, growing up in the UK and more. Some highlights:

Growing up in Kent: Her mom immigrated to the UK from mainland China at the age of eleven and her dad from Hong Kong in his late twenties, and theirs was one of the few families of color in their community. She recalls feeling “like I was kind of between two cultures” as a child and not knowing how to respond when neighbors would compliment her on her “good English”.

How her parents responded to her fame: “They’re wonderfully constant, which I really love, but they’re also not overly impressed by anything. I do know they’re incredibly proud. And more than anything, they’re relieved that both my sister and I are okay.”

Her work to Stop Asian Hate: She calls herself an “accidental activist”, saying of her motivation: “I think a lot about how we can be useful as people, working in media or the arts. How can we work together across different industries to shift narratives and support our communities on the ground?”

Reconnecting with her roots: “One of the nicest things about getting older has been reconnecting and feeling like I can embrace and celebrate the Asian side of my heritage. I’ve met so many incredible people, so many more Asians than I knew when I was growing up, in my line of work.”

Asians in the film industry: “I love the fact that it doesn’t seem to be people elbowing each other out of the way anymore. It’s one of the best things about the past few years; it feels like the doors have finally opened a little bit and people are being allowed to tell their own stories and the stories of their histories and communities. And, naturally, the more we do that, the more we realize what we have in common with each other.”

On her Eternals character, Sersi: “Someone who has been on earth for the past 7,000 years and [has] seen everything that’s happened with humanity: the good and the bad, everything in between… The question [one starts to ask] is: is humanity worth saving?” Chan and Sersi are in agreement that the answer to this is yes. “We at least have to try. We can at least try to fix things and come up with the solutions. That’s our responsibility for having got us here in the first place.”

“Is humanity worth saving” is a pretty complicated question actually. Look at any Trump rally or anti-mask demonstration and I would say no, humanity probably isn’t worth saving. But honestly, I agree – “we at least have to try.” As for the thing about growing up in an environment where people complimented her “good English” – yep, that happens to me. It happens to a lot of Asian people and Southeast Asian people. I was once complimented for “barely having an accent.”

‘The Eternals’ made $71 million in the US, and opened with $161 million globally

After the Eternals’ opening weekend, Rotten Tomatoes has the critics’ score standing at 48% rotten, still the lowest critics’ score ever for a Marvel film. The audience score is much better though – 81% of viewers liked the movie, despite the critical thrashing and despite the qualms from a lot of Marvel stans that the film would be bad because it’s directed by a woman and it has a diverse cast. The Eternals ended up coming just short of the box-office predictions:

“Eternals” soared to the top of the weekend box office chart, buoyed by mania for all things Marvel. But its $71 million debut fell just shy of more bullish projections, which had the superhero film debuting to $75 million to $80 million. That’s a sign, perhaps, that the iffy reviews muted “Eternals’” results or a signal that the underlying intellectual property, the story of a group of god-like extraterrestrials, didn’t have the resonance of other comic book adaptations. Marvel has successfully introduced lesser-known heroes, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy, to movie fans and spawned successful franchises with them, but that series got a lift from critics and also debuted in a time before anyone had ever heard of COVID.

“Eternals” still scored the fourth-best opening weekend for any movie during the pandemic era, sliding in behind Marvel’s own “Black Widow” ($80.3 million) and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($75.3 million) as well as “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” ($90 million), which was made by Sony but based on a Marvel comic creation. It’s an impressive number — and any other studio would be thrilled to have a launch of that size for its movie, especially given the challenging theatrical market — but, for a Marvel venture, it’s hard to not view it as falling short of sky-high expectations. Heavy the head that wears the box office crown and all that. Internationally, “Eternals” took in $90.7 million, bringing its global haul to an impressive $161.7 million. The film is playing in several major markets including South Korea, the United Kingdom, France, Mexico and Australia.

I mean, the box office is still sluggish because of the pandemic and I’m sure there are millions of people who would just prefer to wait a week or two to see the latest Marvel movie. There’s not the sense of urgency anymore to see movies on opening weekend, especially since the pandemic “normalized” watching new movies from the comfort of home. That being said, the negativity about the box office reminds me of the political negativity about the Biden administration: for so many people – and perhaps for Marvel – the glass will never be half-full. It doesn’t matter that the Eternals opened with $161.7 worldwide for a film directed by a Chinese woman and starring the most diverse cast in Marvel history. It matters, to those people, that the film fell short of “bullish” prognostications.

Variety also had another theory about why critics were hyper-critical of the Eternals – utter critical snobbery about Chloe Zhao, and the belief that Zhao was slumming it by directing a Marvel movie. Nevermind that Zhao went to Marvel herself and pitched.
