Chiwetel Ejiofor: ‘It’s probably harder to be gay’ than black in Hollywood

wenn23248864

Chiwetel Ejiofor is during the promotional rounds for Triple 9, the cops-and-robbers movie also starring Kate Winslet, Anthony Mackie, Casey Affleck, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson and more. I remember that there were a lot of casting rumors going back and forth about this film, and I’m pleased that Chiwetel decided to do it. I’ve wanted good things for his career post-12 Years a Slave, but I think Chiwetel is more focused on diversifying his CV, doing a shoot ‘em action film here, a Marvel film there, a quiet African drama over there, and more. There’s no doubt in my mind that Chiwetel would be a much bigger “star” if he was white. But… I do have my doubts about whether Chiwetel is really interested in being a celebrity or a star. I think he just wants to work, and if he says that he’s living his dream, then I believe him.

Anyway, as Chiwetel was promoting Triple 9, he was asked about Hollywood diversity and all of the hot topics of the day. And Chiwetel said something surprising – he thinks it’s harder to be gay in Hollywood than black in Hollywood.

The industry has been accused of a lack of diversity following the 2016 Academy Awards nominations, where no African-American actor or director was nominated for a top honour for the second year in a row, but the 12 Years a Slave star believes it’s harder for someone to succeed if they’re homosexual than if they’re black.

“I hope this changes (but) I think it’s probably harder to be gay,” he told British newspaper The Times. “I think sexuality is still marginalised in a way that is pretty open. I think it’s tough. I think for one’s own piece of mind, for one’s own sense of self and psychological health, I feel like that’s the horrible thing about ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ and all that f**ked-up s**t, because it produces a sense of shame, and therefore this sense of being ‘less than’, you know? And I hate that. I hate that for anybody.”

But Chiwetel argues that at the same time, a person’s sexuality isn’t anyone else’s business, and if the individual wants to, they should be able to declare their preference without fear of it affecting their opportunities in life in any way.

When it comes to race, the 38-year-old’s Nigerian heritage has never held him back from his dream of being an actor, having received a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for his role in 12 Years a Slave in 2013, and winning a Laurence Olivier Award for his theatre work in the 2008 production of Othello.

“If I hadn’t had the opportunities and the fortune that I have had, of course I would have a very different perspective to that, but I can’t be completely intellectually dishonest about what has happened in my life … It’s a tiny bit more nuanced for me to talk about,” he explained.

Brad Pitt Says He’s “a Farmer Now”

Brad Pitt wine

Brad Pitt covers the new issue of Wine Spectator, where he talks about owning a winery. I must admit, his Miravel rosé is one of my faves.

-Buzzfeed has a pretty great, in depth article on Angelina Jolie’s perfect publicity game. Between this and recent reports of her flawless behaviour at the Maleficent junkets, I wonder if her attitude has begun to rub off on Brad Pitt yet? I still haven’t forgiven him for that 2009 roundtable when he was bellyaching about having to promote his movies, while Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke sat across from him, looking dumbfounded.

Brad Pitt‘s red-carpet attacker Vitalii Sediuk faces criminal charges – and was fired from his network two weeks ago. Also, Pitt got a restraining order against him.

-Are Sandra Bullock and Chris Evans dating? (When I first saw the headline, I thought it was Chris Klein and was horrified. Chris Evans, though? Totally on board.)

Kimye‘s wedding kiss is the most liked photo on Instagram ever. It dethroned a Jelena pic, so the bar was low.

-Meanwhile, they’ve moved the honeymoon to Prague.

Pharrell said he’s not a feminist – and then proceeds to say a whole bunch of feminist things. Who wants to break it to him?

Gwyneth Paltrow did a duet with Steven Spielberg’s daughter at a fundraiser this week.

-Meanwhile, Gwyneth continues to get slammed for her comment comparing cyberbullying to war, this time by Green Beret Bryan Sikes.

-Speaking of celebrities being criticized for making stupid metaphors about fame, I’m really disappointed in Charlize Theron‘s comment about how being written about is like “feeling raped.” It’s even worse than Jennifer Lawrence‘s recent rape comment which, though admittedly terrible, was an ill-advised joke on the same level of the other r-word. When Charlize used the word rape, she was actually talking about rape. And she didn’t recognize her error or take it back, even when the interviewer commented on her “strong” choice of words. I expected more from her.

-I don’t think the world needs a new Terminator movie, but even I must admit that Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke looks totally badass.

Bryan Cranston is just trolling us now.

-Everytime I hear the guy who plays Felix on Orphan Black’s Canadian accent, I’m always so taken aback.

Lupita Nyong’o optioned the rights to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah, which is the next on my reading list.

-Brace yourself for a big-ass wave of nostalgia as you gaze upon these photos of a Wonder Years cast reunion.

-The guy who caused the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones took the cutest photo with a fan ever. He’s currently taping The Strain in Toronto, and I keep seeing him. He’s so smiley and nice IRL!

-Now that the Habs lost, Jimmy Fallon wants to collect on his bet.

-The MPAA has slammed Eva Green’s Sin City 2 poster for being too risque, mostly because it’s all about the boobies.

-I had no interest in watching the terrible-looking Undateable show anyway, but Chris D’Elia’s shitty comments about #YesAllWomen just guaranteed I won’t.

Obama talked to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan about Malia’s prom date.

-I liked this article on what Kevin Reilly’s departure means for the future of Fox — and network TV in general.

-How did I not know that Zachary Quinto and Jonathan Groff used to date?

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy showing off their Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart impressions to the men themselves is priceless.

Norman Reedus and Aaron Paul are in one photo. Did the internet just melt?

Josh Brolin just landed the superhero jackpot.

-The trailer for The Book of Life movie, featuring the voices of Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana, is total eye candy.

-Here’s the trailer for A Walk Among the Tombstones. Hasn’t everyone learned yet not to piss off Liam Neeson?! It never ends well!

Of course Lindsay Lohan is maintaining her sobriety & other Coachella photos

Ah, Coachella time is upon us again. Coachella is actually one of my least favorite events to cover, just because A) trendy faux-hipsters, B) drugs and C) terrible casual fashion. Bedhead even discussed how a lot of companies are paying starlets/actresses/reality stars to be photographed at Coachella wearing their stuff. Tedious. I maybe (maybe!) would have been into this when I was 19 years old, but I do think it’s sad for 40-somethings to still do the Coachella thing year after year. Speaking of sad, Lindsay Lohan was there. Because… sobriety. I’m just covering everything in a big photo post from this weekend’s activities – Bedhead and I will have more coverage throughout the week, I’m sure.

Here’s Zoe Kravitz and her “new boyfriend” Noah Becker. When exactly did that happen? I miss Penn Badgley.

Selena Gomez is now in the clutches of Kylie and Kendall Jenner. How does that make you feel? It makes me sad for Selena. All three girls look so ridiculous.

Emma Watson Covers Elle, Premieres Noah

*** TECHNICAL NOTE: This blog is moving to www.scandalsheet.ca. Please update your bookmarks! ***

-I’m not sure I’m feeling the wrinkly material on the halter dress Emma Watson wore to today’s Noah premiere. She fares much better in her new Elle photo spread, where she talks about growing up in public. “There are all these actresses who have emerged in the last year or two, and they get to emerge as this complete human being. And I’m so jealous!”

-Speaking of Potter alums, I saw an early screening of Daniel Radcliffe‘s The F Word (which I really liked) and during the Q&A the director said they were thinking of changing the title to What If, which the audience booed. I guess he didn’t listen to us.

Selena Gomez was spotted without Justin Bieber, offering the world a chance to momentarily unclench.

-Once again, Seth Rogen slammed Justin Bieber. “He’s obnoxious, he’s ungrateful, he’s insincere.”

-Meanwhile, Seth named all the stars he’s smoked pot with — and surprisingly he says James Franco isn’t one of them.

Lena Dunham looks amazing on the new cover of Glamour.

-If Aaron Paul‘s marriage ever falls apart, I feel like we’re all going to need to take care of him because he’ll be a mess. Like, there’ll be a phone tree and a casserole dropoff schedule.

-Do TV stars even need to transition to movies anymore? It seems so old school and backwards.

-The Olsen sisters are on an engagement streak. Two weeks after Mary-Kate‘s proposal, younger sis Elizabeth is getting hitched.

Tina Fey is poo-pooing a Mean Girls sequel, which is probably for the best. We’ll always have “your mom’s chest hair!

-Despite my totally indifference to Star Wars VII, it would be great for Jesse Plemons‘ career if he landed the lead. Texas forever!

-In other good career moves, Nicholas Hoult is set to star in the Iraqi war drama Sand Castle.

Stan‘s beard is back (and on the move) in this new Mad Men photo.

Victoria Beckham uses her treadmill desk while wearing high heels. Of course she does.

-The Orphan Black goodies keep rolling in. Here’s a clip of the latest clone, some new photos from season 2, and a clue-filled poster.

-The comedy bits on Seth Meyers‘ talk show don’t really land, as you can see from this zombie interruption during Norman Reedus‘ interview.

Jimmy Fallon fared much better with Shailene Woodley, talking about suggestive vegetables and playing ping pong.

Fallon also had a great bit with Audra McDonald singing Yahoo Answers.

-If you don’t remember where Game of Thrones left off, this 25-minute recap of season 3 should get you up to speed before April 6.

Jason Derulo‘s new video is packed with celebrity cameos.

-Divergent star Theo James looks a lot like James Franco here.

-Want to see some extremely blurry video of Rihanna and Drake walking around Manchester and (possibly) holding hands?

-Also, Rihanna got Drake hooked on Breaking Bad, according to Aaron Paul.

-Crap, this makes me want to see Les Miz on Broadway.

-These photos from Robin and Barney’s wedding on How I Met Your Mother underscore what a crappy job the writers did at making Robin seem like a real person who lives in the world and has actual friends.

-How is Shaq dropping $1k per week on apps? Is that even possible?

Jared Leto took his glorious hair to Ukraine.

-One more day until the Veronica Mars movie! Here are seven reasons why men should give it a chance, and the cast talking about their favourite characters.

-If this is what Zoë Saldana looks like after dropping exercising and dieting, I give up on life.

-This is weird: Grey’s Anatomy will feature only modern ’80s cover songs for the .

-Oh god, someone is letting Michael Bay remake The Birds.

-This Walking Dead theory is super clever and fun, which probably means the writers haven’t thought of it.

-The Office star Jenna Fischer showed off her bare baby bump with this vacation photo.

-Here’s a very early rundown of some promising (and not so promising) TV shows debuting this fall.

-Speaking of TV, does fewer hit sitcoms mean more room for smarter comedies? Let’s hope!

-Sadness: Little People, Big World stars Amy and Matt Roloff have separated.

Jason Biggs really has to stop trying to be funny on Twitter. It never works.

-That anonymous model who accused Terry Richardson of assault has come forward.

Louis CK‘s show will return (finally!) on May 5.

-Well, that didn’t take long. There’s already backlash to Rooney Mara being cast as Tiger Lily.

Cameron Diaz, 40, sarcastically apologized for not looking like a 25-year-old anymore.

-I kind of feel like we’ll have seen all of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before it hits theatres given the rate Sony is releasing clips. Here’s yet another one.

Kristen Wiig plays an incredibly convincing sadsack in the trailer for Hateship Loveship.

-Meanwhile, Bieber has been named the most overexposed celebrity by Forbes.

Kylie Minogue took BuzzFeed’s “Which Kylie Are You?” quiz and the GIFs of her doing it are adorable!

-Speaking of Buzzfeed quizes, which Veronica Mars character are you? I got Logan, which I guess means I need to start organizing bum fights?

-The Bachelor’s Juan Pablo made a baffling video montage for the show’s winner, Nikki, I guess to prove that he loves her without actually having to say it. That guy is so weird, even Dancing with the Stars didn’t want him.

Chris Evans has decided that he does not like the taste of his own foot and has taken it out of his mouth.

-Ugh, really? Rooney Mara in Warner Bros’ Pan, even though she’s the whitest person ever.

-Did you ever think, “why the hell would True Detective cast Elisabeth Reaser and not give her any lines?” Well, they actually did — they were just cut. Here’s her breakup scene with Rust.

Bryan Cranston showed up to support Aaron Paul at his Need for Speed premiere, because they’re best friends foreva!

-Ruh roh. Lady Gaga’s charity reportedly donated just $5,000 of its $2.1 million.

Ed Westwick could not look less like Chuck Bass in this photo.

-It’s weird to watch Abigail Breslin‘s Perfect Sisters trailer because this was a huge and terrible story that dominated the news in our city for a long time, but here it is.
