James McAvoy went to TIFF to premiere and promote his directorial debut, California Schemin’. He attended the world premiere at TIFF several days ago, and he’s been networking and schmoozing at the festival. On Monday night, he went to Toronto bar Charlotte’s Room with some producers. While he was there, a drunk man sucker-punched him. What in the world??

James McAvoy was attacked by a stranger in a Toronto bar on Monday, Sept. 8, while he was in town for his directorial debut California Schemin’. The actor, 46, and his wife Lisa Liberati attended the world premiere of California Schemin’ at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, Sept. 6.

While having a quiet night at the bar Charlotte’s Room in Toronto on Sept. 8, McAvoy was hit by a man at about 11:55 p.m., and, caught off guard, the X-Men star tried to deescalate the situation as others intervened to remove the man.

“James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out,” a source close to McAvoy tells PEOPLE. “James’ back was to him and the man just punched him.”

Afterwards, the source says, McAvoy stayed at the bar and even laughed off the incident with other patrons and the staff. PEOPLE reached out to Charlotte’s Room for comment.

When I drank, I never sucker-punched anyone or got punched by anyone, but one time a very drunk guy did pour a drink in my face. I was so stunned, I just stood there motionless and horrified. And all of the people to sucker-punch, this douche picked James McAvoy? Generally regarded as one of the nicest actors out there? Crazy. I hope the punch was nothing serious and nothing was broken or bleeding. If James continued to hang out in the bar, it probably wasn’t serious. But still… my god.

Per EW: “The Speak No Evil actor had not interacted with the man previously, nor did he provoke the attack, which occurred around 11:55 p.m. Other patrons of Charlotte’s Room rushed in to restrain the man, who was eventually escorted out.”

Demi Moore attended the BAFTAs on Sunday as a Best Actress nominee. She lost to Mikey Madison, in what was probably considered a surprise. Personally, I’ve thought that Mikey should be the frontrunner of the lead-actress race for months, but Demi is the one winning everything (everything except the BAFTA). Demi dressed like she thought she was going to win as well – she wore this really striking Alexander McQueen gown which is so detailed and interesting.

Lupita Nyong’o wore Chanel to the BAFTAs – this is one of the few times I’ve really loved Chanel on a red carpet. Who knew that Lupita Chanel was such a great combo?

Anna Kentrick wore an archive Georges Chakra – really sexy, and I adore the diamonds and emeralds. She really went all out.

Marisa Tomei in Sophie Couture. I saw some complaints about this and I was like WTF, she looks great. But on second look… the dress is “off” somehow? I get it. The shoulders throw everything off and the large applique at the waist weighs down the dress (and makes it look saggy). But she’s lovely.

James McAvoy confirms that he quietly married Lisa Liberati, his girlfriend of six years

The timeline on James McAvoy’s relationship with Lisa Liberati was always a little bit confusing. James and Anne-Marie Duff got married in 2006 and announced their split in the spring of 2019. And yet… he was reportedly seeing Lisa Liberati as early as 2016, when they met as they were working on Split in Philadelphia. It’s possible that James and Anne-Marie were separated quietly for years before they announced anything, but there definitely seemed like there was overlap between his marriage and his courtship with Lisa. Back in 2019, there were rumors of a quiet, secret wedding between James and Lisa. Neither confirmed anything… until now. James told the Guardian that he is married and he’s something of an honorary Philadelphian.

James McAvoy has revealed he secretly married American partner Lisa Liberati. The Scottish actor, 42, was rumoured to have wed the personal assistant, 42, in 2019 just a year after meeting – but refused to address the speculation. However, the Atonement star quietly confirmed the news this week – although refused to give any further details.

James was reflecting on his identity with the Guardian newspaper, and the publication noted of him and Lisa: ‘They began a relationship a couple of years later and, he confirms, recently got married.’

As Lisa hails from Philadelphia, James was asked if he is now an honorary Philadelphian and told the newspaper: ‘Yeah, it’s like a second home for me.’

Philadelphia can now claim James McAvoy as their adopted son. Gritty will be so proud. As for the marriage… James is a private guy and simply “not talking about it” has helped his image so much. He usually doesn’t engage with questions about his relationships in general. I guess I’m happy for him. I would be happier if he was married to me, but sure. Congrats to them, congrats to Philadelphia and congrats to Gritty.

–Brad Pitt covers the new issue of Wine Spectator, where he talks about owning a winery. I must admit, his Miravel rosé is one of my faves.

-Buzzfeed has a pretty great, in depth article on Angelina Jolie’s perfect publicity game. Between this and recent reports of her flawless behaviour at the Maleficent junkets, I wonder if her attitude has begun to rub off on Brad Pitt yet? I still haven’t forgiven him for that 2009 roundtable when he was bellyaching about having to promote his movies, while Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke sat across from him, looking dumbfounded.

–Brad Pitt‘s red-carpet attacker Vitalii Sediuk faces criminal charges – and was fired from his network two weeks ago. Also, Pitt got a restraining order against him.

-Are Sandra Bullock and Chris Evans dating? (When I first saw the headline, I thought it was Chris Klein and was horrified. Chris Evans, though? Totally on board.)

–Kimye‘s wedding kiss is the most liked photo on Instagram ever. It dethroned a Jelena pic, so the bar was low.

-Meanwhile, Gwyneth continues to get slammed for her comment comparing cyberbullying to war, this time by Green Beret Bryan Sikes.

-Speaking of celebrities being criticized for making stupid metaphors about fame, I’m really disappointed in Charlize Theron‘s comment about how being written about is like “feeling raped.” It’s even worse than Jennifer Lawrence‘s recent rape comment which, though admittedly terrible, was an ill-advised joke on the same level of the other r-word. When Charlize used the word rape, she was actually talking about rape. And she didn’t recognize her error or take it back, even when the interviewer commented on her “strong” choice of words. I expected more from her.

-I don’t think the world needs a new Terminator movie, but even I must admit that Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke looks totally badass.

–Bryan Cranston is just trolling us now.

-Everytime I hear the guy who plays Felix on Orphan Black’s Canadian accent, I’m always so taken aback.

–Lupita Nyong’o optioned the rights to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah, which is the next on my reading list.

-Brace yourself for a big-ass wave of nostalgia as you gaze upon these photos of a Wonder Years cast reunion.

-The guy who caused the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones took the cutest photo with a fan ever. He’s currently taping The Strain in Toronto, and I keep seeing him. He’s so smiley and nice IRL!

-The MPAA has slammed Eva Green’s Sin City 2 poster for being too risque, mostly because it’s all about the boobies.
