Steven Spielberg to Tom Cruise: ‘You saved Hollywood’s ass’

In yesterday’s post about the Oscar nominee luncheon, I was more focused on the fashion of the nominees, and not really paying attention to the dudes. I didn’t even include photos of Tom Cruise, who turned up at the lunch because of Top Gun: Maverick, which has been nominated for Best Picture and several technical awards. Cruise IS Top Gun: Maverick. He put the sequel together, he got the money together, he made sure that it would have a huge theatrical release and he promoted the film like crazy last year. It worked – Maverick is one of the most successful films of all time, and Cruise was able to shake off the pandemic box office blues.

At the Oscar luncheon, everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) wanted some face time with the king of Hollywood. Michelle Yeoh literally pushed Austin Butler aside to get to Tom. Steven Spielberg stopped and gave Tom credit for saving the industry. Tom took selfies with everyone and people were so happy to see him. So… credit to Tom’s team for this incredible turnaround. While Tom has always been popular and respected within the industry, he absolutely had some bad years where he would not have gotten this kind of reception. Going away from LA, not being seen everywhere on the circuit, that’s done wonders for his image too.

Now people want him to do an age-appropriate romantic/action movie with Michelle Yeoh and you know what? I would watch that.

Steven Spielberg on representation in West Side Story: ‘We needed to get it right’

Carol Lawrence, Rachel Zegler and Rita Moreno

2021 has been the year of reboots and remakes. I guess Hollywood wanted to rinse and repeat and do things kinda sorta right this time? At least that is what Steven Spielberg aimed to do with his adaptation of the West Side Story musical, out now in theaters. The original 1961 adaptation was rife with f*ckery. The original cast were mostly white actors playing Puerto Ricans in brown face. They even browned up Rita Morena, one of the only Latinx cast members, because she was too pale. This time around, Steven said he hoped to get the casting right by making sure that all of the Sharks (Puerto Rican gang) were cast with Latinx actors. Steven and screenwriter Tony Kushner agreed early in the process that Latinx actors would be cast. With that in mind, Rachel Zegler, a Latina of Colombian and Polish descent, was chosen to play Maria. Steven and some of the cast did a series of virtual interviews with Yahoo, which has clips on their site. Here is some of what they told Yahoo!

While crafting his new highly anticipated adaptation of the Broadway musical, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg realized how crucial the casting would be for contemporary audiences in a time when representation matters.

“We needed to get it right. And the first thing [screenwriter Tony Kushner] and I agreed to when we first met to discuss adapting the original Broadway show was [that] we had to have a complete Latino/Latinx cast for the Sharks.”

That includes Maria, the idealistic Puerto Rican whom doomed Polish-American Tony (Ansel Elgort) falls for. She is played by red-hot 20-year-old newcomer Rachel Zegler (the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Disney’s Snow White).

“West Side Story was so integral to my upbringing. I grew up in a Latino musical theatre-oriented home,” Zegler says, who first saw a casting call on Twitter and is of Colombian- and Polish-American descent. “I see it as a real gift and I don’t take it lightly. It’s a huge moment for me, but also a huge moment for young Latinas everywhere to see Maria played by a Latina onscreen for the first time.”

“And who actually has a singing voice,” weighs in Rita Moreno, who won an Academy Award for her dazzling role as Anita in the 1961 version, taking a not-so-subtle shot at her late co-star Wood. (Wood’s musical numbers were famously dubbed by Marni Nixon; Moreno’s voice was also dubbed, by Betty Wand, on “A Boy Like That,” but sang her own vocals in “America.”)

[From Yahoo!]

I love what Steven is trying to do here. It seems as if he not only wanted to remake West Side Story because he loved the story but because he wanted to right the wrong of the first adaptation. I believe Steven is sincere. Looking at the cast, I am glad that dark-skinned and indigenous Latinx actors were represented (unlike in the recent In The Heights adaptation). The casting director was Cindy Tolan, who was also did casting for Straight Outta Compton, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and If Beale Street Could Talk.

I also love that Rita Morena has taken on a new role (she plays Valentina) in the film. I laughed at Rita throwing shade at Natalie Wood not being able to sing. I also like that they found actors who can both dance and sing so I am sure whoever goes to see his West Side Story adaptation, will be highly entertained..

I am conflicted about this movie. West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals. Despite the problematic casting of the original film, I still watch it every year. Although I feel that the remake of West Side Story is needed, I am really tired of remakes and reboots. The depiction of the Sharks and the Jets is more accurate this time around, but I am not sure if it is enough to get me in a seat at a theatre. I hope that Latinx people are able to see themselves in this story. May this trend for more accurate casting in Hollywood continue. And may Black and brown people continue to tell their stories accurately on the big screen.

Bernie Sanders calls George Clooney’s ritzy Clinton fundraisers ‘obscene’

wenn23483338

George Clooney spoke about his support for Hillary Clinton several months ago, when he was promoting Hail Caesar. Clooney has always been a big Hollywood Democrat, and he supported John Kerry and Barack Obama in past presidential election cycles. Clooney has made no secret of his support for Clinton this time around, but he also hasn’t said anything negative about Bernie Sanders. The only person Clooney has criticized is Donald Trump. Anyway, George and Amal Clooney are cohosting two major California fundraisers for Clinton’s campaign and the DNC. The fundraiser tickets cost $33,400, and the Clooneys have co-hosts like Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg and more. This usually happens, by the way – the Hollywood Democrats and Silicon Valley Democrats will throw several big (and big-money) fundraisers in LA and San Francisco every presidential election cycle. But Hillary Clinton’s competition, Bernie Sanders, doesn’t like it. He thinks the Clooneys represent “big money people.”

“It is obscene that Secretary Clinton keeps going to big-money people to fund her campaign,” Bernie Sanders said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. Clinton is asking donors for $353,400 for two seats at the head table with herself, Clooney and his wife, Amal, at the April 15 event in San Francisco. The next night, the Clooneys will host a $33,400 per person fundraiser for Clinton at the couple’s Los Angeles home.

“I have a lot of respect for George Clooney. He’s a great actor. I like him,” Sanders said. “But this is the problem with American politics … Big money is dominating our political system. And [my supporters and I] are trying to move as far away from that as we can.”

Sanders, whose campaign has been largely funded by small donations, says his events usually cost “$15 or $50” to get into.

“So it’s not a criticism of Clooney,” he said. “It’s a criticism of a corrupt campaign finance system, where big money interests — and it’s not Clooney, it’s the people coming to this event — have undue influence on the political process.”

Throughout the Democratic primary, the self-described democratic socialist has attacked Clinton’s ties to Wall Street. He did so again Sunday.

“It’s not only this Clooney event,” Sanders said. “It is the fact she has now raised well over $15 million from Wall Street for her super-PAC, and millions more from the fossil fuel industry, and from the drug companies.”

Clinton’s Clooney swing comes less than two months before the crucial Democratic primary on June 7 in California, where 475 delegates are at stake.

CB and I were debating this between ourselves – she’s a Bernie fan, and she agrees with what he’s saying. Meanwhile I voted for Clinton in the Virginia primary, and I did so because I honestly think Clinton is a better Democratic candidate for office. I understand Sanders’ point about getting the “big money” out of politics, and I agree with it as a moral and ethical stance. But in practice, I find it difficult to understand why Clinton (or any Democratic candidate) should be held to a different standard than the GOP candidates. Plus, I just have a fundamental disagreement with calling George Clooney a “big money” donor who will use his fundraising skills to push some agenda with Hillary Clinton. If you want to talk about the hedge fund people pushing candidates for tax cuts for billionaires, sure, let’s talk about that. But what’s on Clooney’s political agenda that isn’t already on Clinton’s agenda?

Brad Pitt Says He’s “a Farmer Now”

Brad Pitt wine

Brad Pitt covers the new issue of Wine Spectator, where he talks about owning a winery. I must admit, his Miravel rosé is one of my faves.

-Buzzfeed has a pretty great, in depth article on Angelina Jolie’s perfect publicity game. Between this and recent reports of her flawless behaviour at the Maleficent junkets, I wonder if her attitude has begun to rub off on Brad Pitt yet? I still haven’t forgiven him for that 2009 roundtable when he was bellyaching about having to promote his movies, while Robert Downey Jr. and Mickey Rourke sat across from him, looking dumbfounded.

Brad Pitt‘s red-carpet attacker Vitalii Sediuk faces criminal charges – and was fired from his network two weeks ago. Also, Pitt got a restraining order against him.

-Are Sandra Bullock and Chris Evans dating? (When I first saw the headline, I thought it was Chris Klein and was horrified. Chris Evans, though? Totally on board.)

Kimye‘s wedding kiss is the most liked photo on Instagram ever. It dethroned a Jelena pic, so the bar was low.

-Meanwhile, they’ve moved the honeymoon to Prague.

Pharrell said he’s not a feminist – and then proceeds to say a whole bunch of feminist things. Who wants to break it to him?

Gwyneth Paltrow did a duet with Steven Spielberg’s daughter at a fundraiser this week.

-Meanwhile, Gwyneth continues to get slammed for her comment comparing cyberbullying to war, this time by Green Beret Bryan Sikes.

-Speaking of celebrities being criticized for making stupid metaphors about fame, I’m really disappointed in Charlize Theron‘s comment about how being written about is like “feeling raped.” It’s even worse than Jennifer Lawrence‘s recent rape comment which, though admittedly terrible, was an ill-advised joke on the same level of the other r-word. When Charlize used the word rape, she was actually talking about rape. And she didn’t recognize her error or take it back, even when the interviewer commented on her “strong” choice of words. I expected more from her.

-I don’t think the world needs a new Terminator movie, but even I must admit that Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke looks totally badass.

Bryan Cranston is just trolling us now.

-Everytime I hear the guy who plays Felix on Orphan Black’s Canadian accent, I’m always so taken aback.

Lupita Nyong’o optioned the rights to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah, which is the next on my reading list.

-Brace yourself for a big-ass wave of nostalgia as you gaze upon these photos of a Wonder Years cast reunion.

-The guy who caused the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones took the cutest photo with a fan ever. He’s currently taping The Strain in Toronto, and I keep seeing him. He’s so smiley and nice IRL!

-Now that the Habs lost, Jimmy Fallon wants to collect on his bet.

-The MPAA has slammed Eva Green’s Sin City 2 poster for being too risque, mostly because it’s all about the boobies.

-I had no interest in watching the terrible-looking Undateable show anyway, but Chris D’Elia’s shitty comments about #YesAllWomen just guaranteed I won’t.

Obama talked to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan about Malia’s prom date.

-I liked this article on what Kevin Reilly’s departure means for the future of Fox — and network TV in general.

-How did I not know that Zachary Quinto and Jonathan Groff used to date?

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy showing off their Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart impressions to the men themselves is priceless.

Norman Reedus and Aaron Paul are in one photo. Did the internet just melt?

Josh Brolin just landed the superhero jackpot.

-The trailer for The Book of Life movie, featuring the voices of Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana, is total eye candy.

-Here’s the trailer for A Walk Among the Tombstones. Hasn’t everyone learned yet not to piss off Liam Neeson?! It never ends well!

Tom Hiddleston: Ben Cumberbatch ‘is one of my best friends, it’s that simple’

117380PCN_Crimson24

I am about to cause a disturbance in the Dragonfly Force: I don’t think Tom Hiddleston ever looks good with dark hair. Ever. He looks his best when he’s close to his natural hair color (a strawberry blonde) with some scruff or a goatee. Otherwise, Tommy just looks creepy. I’m including a few more photos of Tommy this week on the set of Crimson Peak in Toronto (we had some pics yesterday too).

These days, I try to spread the Hiddles out because there hasn’t been a lot of news, but you’re getting Tommy posts two days in a row. You are welcome, Dragonflies. The reason I’m writing about him again? A new interview with the Toronto Star to promote Only Lovers Left Alive! This is the very first line of the piece: “Sitting in a hotel room listening to British actor Tom Hiddleston recite Hamlet is not a bad way to start a day.” Tommy never changes. Some highlights from the piece:

What influenced Tom’s vampire Adam in OLLA: “It’s interesting and I have thought about (Bowie) but I also thought about Syd Barrett, too,” said Hiddleston of the late co-founder of Pink Floyd, whose musical genius was marred by mental illness and addiction. “Syd was a nice reference for us visually and also Mick Jagger in (the 1970 drama) Performance where he’s playing a Bohemian living in a dilapidated house. We talked about Hamlet as well.”

Tommy always brings it around to Shakespeare: Hiddleston said he was inspired by his character’s “sad disillusioned spirit” to reread Hamlet — also taking a cue from a character in the script — and found “so many of these lines could have been said by Adam,” before quoting several of the Danish prince’s speeches.

He doesn’t feel like OLLA really is a vampire movie: “It felt like we were making a love story between two quite sophisticated creatures who happen to be vampires. It is a wonderful prism from which to explore immortality.”

Vampires take the long view: “For Adam, immortality has become a burden and he’s become depressed with the direction of human activity, an age which has a great fear of imagination. Eve can say ‘we’ve lived through worse.’ She’s got the long view.”

Dancing with Tilda Swinton: “That was a very special day, a first coming-together with Tilda and as a sequence, it speaks volumes but wordlessly.”

Taking the part in Crimson Peak after Benedict Cumberbatch dropped out: “He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that,” Hiddleston said of Cumberbatch. They met in 2010, playing officers in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.

Doing a good horror film: “It’s a great script and I’ve been a fan of Guillermo del Toro forever. I think he’s amazing. He’s made no secret this is an English-language film that’s very close to the sensibility of his Spanish-language films. I’ve always wanted to make a good horror film and there’s no one at the moment in the world of Guillermo’s equal.”

[From The Toronto Star]

We could literally spend DAYS and weeks parsing this: “He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that.” Tommy has a BFF!!!! And it’s Benedict Cumberbatch! Benedict is his big brother. Tommy needs a father figure and Benny is it. Do they go over to each other’s houses? Do they party together? Or do they just do sleepovers and talk about their dream girls whilst braiding each other’s hair? Dear Hollywood: make THAT movie. Two Englishmen BFFs who hang out together, get drunk and play with each other’s hair. It would make billions of dollars.

Will Jennifer Lawrence do a ‘star vehicle’ adaptation of Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’?

I grabbed this before Bedhead had a chance to see it! *villainess cackle* My interest in this story is not so much about Jennifer Lawrence, but about John Steinbeck. I am an unapologetic Steinbeck fan-girl. I think he’s arguably one of the greatest American writers of all time. Many people get stuck on The Grapes of Wrath and never reach beyond it to read Steinbeck’s other works, which are for the most part much less depressing. One of my favorite Steinbeck novels, East of Eden, was already adapted into a film in the 1950s – it starred James Dean, and it was okay. Dean is wonderful in the film but I never really felt like it was a genuine adaptation of the original novel. So now Hollywood is going to try again, only it sounds like they’re trying to make it into some kind of vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence? What the what?

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer have closed a deal with the John Steinbeck estate for a new version of his seminal novel East Of Eden that will be developed as a re-team for The Hunger Games director Gary Ross and Jennifer Lawrence.

I’m told that the book is Ross’ favorite American novel and that the director plans to tell the generational story in two films. The novel previously was adapted into one picture, the 1955 Elia Kazan-directed film that starred James Dean and Richard Davalos as sons who compete for the attention of their farmer father in Salinas, CA. Ross wants Lawrence to play Cathy Ames, the cold and cruel mother of the boys and estranged wife of the farmer. The films will tell their stories, leading into the rivalry between their sons.

The studio and Imagine first acquired the 1952 novel back in 2004. This was after Steinbeck’s modern retelling of the Cain and Abel story shot back up the best-seller lists when Oprah Winfrey made it the first selection of the revived book club on her daytime talk show. I’m told that the original option lapsed, but then the studio and Grazer put together a new deal in a competitive situation, this one built around Ross and Lawrence, the latter of whom won the Academy Award in February for Silver Linings Playbook. Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley was very involved, as was Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, Uni’s co-president of production.

Back to Steinbeck, who is hot stuff. This is the second recent seismic deal for the late author; in July, DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg made a deal to mount a new version of the Steinbeck classic The Grapes Of Wrath.

On East Of Eden, Universal, Grazer and Ross are still working out the particulars. When the studio acquired the book the first time, it got a script by Paul Attanasio. It is unclear at the moment if Ross will rewrite it himself or work with a writer. Ross will most certainly have a hand in the writing; he is a four time Oscar-nominee whose book adaptations include Seabiscuit and The Hunger Games. The intention is to get the picture into production after Ross directs Peter And The Starcatchers for Sony and Disney, which is his take on the Peter Pan legend. Lawrence will catch up with Ross and East Of Eden after she completes the final two installments of The Hunger Games series. She will next be seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the David O Russell-directed American Hustle from Sony.

[From Deadline]

Deadline also points out that Ross and Lawrence are also going to reteam for the film adaptation of the Hannah Kent novel Burial Rites. Basically, everybody wants Jennifer Lawrence for everything, even if she’s not really right for the part and even if the character is like 40 or 50 years old through much of the story. While the “Cathy Ames” character is central to the story, I worry that if the adaptation is built around Jennifer Lawrence as “the star,” you will lose a great deal of the story. The story is much more than Cathy Ames.

It’s always sort of amazed me that some of Steinbeck’s “minor” works don’t get the big Hollywood treatment – his books like Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday are much more “adaptable”. I see that someone already tried to do Cannery Row back in the 1980s, but that’s a great story and it would be interesting to see them try to do it again.
