Sydney Sweeney wore a custom Vera Wang to the ‘Echo Valley’ NYC premiere

Have you seen the ads for Echo Valley? It looks good. Sydney Sweeney plays the screwed-up addict daughter of Julianne Moore and Kyle MacLachlan, and she probably killed someone and she got her mom to hide the body or something? It’s exactly the kind of thriller-drama which used to be made all of the time thirty years ago! It’s not going to have a theatrical release, it will premiere on AppleTV in a few weeks.

So, they had a big premiere in New York for Echo Valley last night. I never would have put Sydney and Julianne together as mother-and-daughter, but it actually sort of works now that I’m looking at photos of them together. Similar eyes, similar faces. I get it. For the premiere, Sydney wore a custom Vera Wang in taffeta, and Julianne wore a custom Alaïa dress in velvet. Julianne’s look is much better, and you know Julianne is going to act her ass off whenever she’s rocking a f–k ass bob. Sydney’s look is very… prom/Golden Globes, right? It feels like way too much for a premiere. I will give Vera Wang some credit though – the bodice of the gown is beautifully tailored for Sydney’s buxom figure.

Several months ago, it was pretty much confirmed that Sydney did split with her longtime boyfriend/fiance Jonathan Davino. A few days ago, she spoke to the Times and she confirmed that she’s no longer planning a wedding, and she answered “yes” when asked if she was now single. She also said: “I’m learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I’m loving it.” Good, I’m glad she got out of that relationship and she’s focusing on herself.

Julianne Moore slams Trump admin for banning her children’s book

Another day, another inexplicably ridiculous decision by the Trump Administration. This time, we’re talking about children’s books. As a part of their attack on diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Department of Defense has been “restricting access” to “books and learning materials” that have anything to do with subjects like immigration, psychology, and a host of different subjects “trigger words” that scare the administration. While they haven’t gone full DeSantis and banned these books from all public schools yet, they are no longer permitted at any Pentagon-run schools.

One of these “restricted” books is Julianne Moore’s 2007 children’s book, “Freckleface Strawberry.” Julianne’s book tells the story of a little girl who is conscientious about having freckles, but in the end learns to accept them because everyone is different. Naturally, Julianne is upset and spoke out about it on Instagram over the weekend.

“It is a great shock for me to learn that my first book, Freckleface Strawberry, has been banned by the Trump Administration from schools run by the Department of Defense,” Moore began her Sunday Instagram post. “Freckleface Strawberry is a semi-autobiographical story about a seven year old girl who dislikes her freckles but eventually learns to live with them when she realizes that she is different ‘just like everybody else.’”

She continued, “It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community.”

Moore, the daughter of a Vietnam veteran and graduate of the Department of Defense-run Frankfurt American High School, added she is particularly devastated that “kids like me, growing up with a parent in the service and attending a [DoDEA] school, will not have access to a book written by someone whose life experience is so similar to their own.”

The first of Moore’s Freckleface Strawberry books hit shelves in 2007 and followed its 7-year-old protagonist as she learns to accept herself, red hair, freckles, and all. “The things that make you different also make you, YOU,” reads the official synopsis. The pre-school level picture book has spawned several sequels, including Freckleface Strawberry: Loose Tooth and Freckleface Strawberry and the Really Big Voice.

“I can’t help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that causes it to be banned by the US Government,” Moore continued in her post. “I am truly saddened and never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right.”

The actress went on to thank PEN America, a nonprofit that seeks to raise awareness for the protection of free expression in the United States and worldwide, for “bringing this to my attention.”

Last week, the organization condemned the Trump administration for purging books — such as Moore’s — from Department of Defense schools that serve 67,000 children around the world. Other banned books include the Ruth Bader Ginsburg picture book No Truth Without Ruth and transgender activist Nicole Maines’ memoir, Becoming Nicole.

“The removal of these titles is yet another indicator of the new Administration’s flippant and autocratic approach to K-12 education,” read a Thursday post from PEN America.

I want to say that this is truly the stupidest timeline, but it’s actually a pretty sad one. We know that the DOGE firings blanket-targeted anyone labeled “probationary,” while the NSF and NIH funding cuts targeted any research that used words like “diverse” and “women.” I have no doubt that Julianne’s book was just caught in the crossfire, but this is ridiculous. It’s just really sad when an 18-year-old picture book about accepting yourself is deemed too woke. And also, not for nothing, but like Julianne said, she wrote it from her experience as a military child. Military children tend to move around a lot, which can be difficult on school-aged kids. It’s cruel to ban books that may help them fit in more with their peers. Hopefully, Julianne speaking out about this as a public figure will make people more aware of what’s going on.

Given the SAG Award nominations’ complete lack of love for May December, it feels like Natalie Portman is maybe phasing out her awards-show appearances. Julianne Moore is not! She and Charles Melton attended the Critics Choice Awards, although their film was once again blanked for awards. I enjoyed May December but I also sort of think that there are more worthy awards nominees, but we’ll see. I still feel like Melton should get an Oscar nom. Meanwhile, Julianne wore this glorious Chanel sack dress! Melton’s (zoot) suit is Valentino.

Camila Morrone also wore Chanel – she’s a lovely young woman with a great figure, and I have no idea why Chanel gave her a dress which makes her look pregnant.

Matt Bomer. Just… Matt Bomer. What a beautiful man. A vampire! He and his Fellow Travelers costar Jonathan Bailey kissed on the lips when Bailey won his award. It was HOT.

Elizabeth Debicki in an Oscar de La Renta jumpsuit. Not gonna lie, she phoned this in. She’s probably saving her best look for tonight’s Emmys.

Juno Temple in a simple black down. It’s pretty crazy to watch Ted Lasso get completely blanked at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes. The Bear is the hot new show, plus it feels like people were really upset with how Ted Lasso’s final season went down. I wonder if the show will be blanked at the Emmys tonight?

Here are more fashion photos from last night’s Governors Awards, which were untelevised. Florence Pugh really killed it in her Rodarte look, and I love the way Pugh can really work across the board, style-wise. She can do punk, she can do shaved-head & couture, she can do athleisure, and she can do Old Hollywood. She’s giving, like, Jean Harlow vibes. Her hair is a great length and a great color right now – such a terrific shade of blonde. As for the dress, I could do without the peplum, quite honestly. But the rest of it is lovely.

Last night’s Golden Globes harkened back to the old awards shows in that it was tedious, not that entertaining and mostly forgettable except for the fashion. The bright red dresses were some of my favorite looks though, starting with Julianne Moore in this sleek strapless Bottega Veneta gown. She looked so lovely and comfortable and her dress had pockets! Her hair was a bit plain, but it also didn’t compete with that gorgeous gown or her jewels. Julianne was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for May December, which went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Presenter Michelle Yeoh was also in red orange Bottega Veneta, in an architecturally fabulous gown with a draped bustline. I’ve been watching The Brothers Sun on Netflix and it’s pretty entertaining. I love Brad Falchuk’s shows and this one doesn’t disappoint. Check out her orange watch I love that detail.

Danielle Brooks killed it in red Moschino. I only wish the skirt went straight down instead of flaring out like that, but I love the red wrap. Danielle was nominated for Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for The Color Purple, which went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers.

Rachel Brosnahan was a bombshell in this off the shoulder Sergio Hudson gown with snaking buttons down the front. This fits her like a glove and is sexy without being over the top. I love the bow in her hair. Rachel was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, which went to Ayo Edebiri for The Bear. Rachel’s next project now that Mrs. Maisel has wrapped is a limited series for Amazon called Lois & Varga.

Update: I’m adding in Pedro Pascal in Bottega Veneta because I don’t want to forget him! Look at this handsome man. He injured his arm in a fall before the Globes and said “it can happen to anybody.” Pedro played along and took it well when Kieran Culkin told him to suck it when he won in their category. I bet those dweebs at the Hollywood Foreign Press didn’t even watch The Last of Us.

The best part of this time of year is that most holiday meals feature mounds of mashed potatoes. I am a mashed potato person, and a french fry person and even a baked potato person. I have more rules about baked potatoes though – I loathe “full loaded” baked potatoes and you shouldn’t put everything but the kitchen sink on your potato of choice. Like, it’s gross when people use fries as a vehicle for all kinds of meat, chili, cheese, poutine, whatever. The potato is wonderful enough to stand on its own, which is why mashed potatoes are probably the purest potato – just some butter, salt, pepper and cream and you’ve got perfect mashed potatoes. But not according to Julianne Moore. Julianne Moore hates mashed potatoes. Why????

Julianne Moore is a staunch hater of one of the world’s most beloved comfort foods. The actress, 63, revealed that mashed potatoes rank at the top of her least favorite foods list — and she can’t understand why other people don’t feel the same.

“Why do people like mashed potatoes? It’s just mush. It’s just mush!” she said at a May December cast panel in New York City moderated by Happy Sad Confused podcast host Josh Horowitz on Nov. 30.

While her costar Charles Melton was quick to defend the dish, Moore hit back and said, “I know, people love it, they love them — it’s just mashed mush.”

Natalie Portman, on the other hand, said she’s opposed to fruit in salad. “I’m not into it. I like fruit salad, but I don’t want a savory salad with fruit in it. It bothers me.”

Melton, 32, shared that he doesn’t like blue cheese.

Blue cheese is disgusting, I couldn’t agree more. And I’m also not crazy about fruit salads, although chicken salad with grapes = heaven. But how can anyone hate mashed potatoes? It’s not just mush! Julianne must be making it wrong. That being said, some people have strong feelings about lumpy vs smooth mashed potatoes – I like both? What potato dish does Julianne make for the holidays? Baked potatoes? Sweet potato pie?

Lily James in Tamara Ralph at the BAFTAs: weird but kind of cool?

Lily James is a British actress who plays Americans so well you can’t really tell where she’s from. Like if you told me she was American and just really good at accents I would believe you. There’s something so carefree about her that she gives an American, specifically Californian, vibe. She was at the BAFTAs in a cool looking white Tamara Ralph gown with a cage bodice made of pearls. I’ve seen so many gowns at this point in my career that I’m impressed with a novel detail that isn’t horribly fug. This dress doesn’t need the giant bow at the back, that’s too much, but the split neckline with the nautical cage is theatrical and awesome. Props to the designer. It also fits her like a glove. She looks great with dark hair too.

Julianne Moore was in a black strapless Saint Laurent gown with a white feather shrug. I follow her on Instagram and she posted on her stories that she had her hair done but did her own makeup with Hourglass cosmetics! She’s a brand ambassador. I checked and that’s way out of my price range but she looks amazing. I also like this take on the black and white trend. It’s much better than a white dress with black gloves for instance. Her jewelry is Bvlgari! She’s 62 and I’ll have what she’s having.

Nominee Jamie Lee Curtis was also in Saint Laurent, and she’s having fun this awards season. I hope she ups her style at the Oscars. This looks like someone threw a velvet jacket over a white dress as an afterthought. At least make it fitted.

Hong Chau was also nominated in Curtis’s category, Best Supporting Actress (that went to Kerry Condon). She did the black and white trend expertly in this incredible Erdem gown with one of the coolest prints I’ve ever seen. I’m assuming that’s digitally printed and I love how it merges thin geometric lines with large floral details. This is a thoughtful cool looking gown that’s a work of art.

Hayley Atwell was a miss for me in Cong Tri. Maybe this would work without the threaded top. It’s like some junior designers had a brainstorming session for new ideas. “What if we took tassel trim and made a shirt out of it?”
