Fashion Fernanda Torres Lily Rose Depp Lupita Nyong’O Margaret Qualley Oscars penelope cruz

Lupita Nyong’o had the best dress out of all of the Chanel-clad Oscar attendees

Lupita Nyong’o is one of the latest brand ambassadors for Chanel. Originally, I thought it was bad luck for Lupita, who is usually known as one of the best-dressed women on any given red carpet. I thought she would be confined by Chanel’s tweed-and-pearls philosophy. Instead, something magical happened – Chanel’s designers have been customizing some of their best gowns for Lupita, and she looks like the second coming of Audrey Hepburn. Lupita’s Chanel look at last night’s Oscars was one of my favorites of the night. I love how they incorporated the “Chanel pearls” into her hair.

Fernanda Torres also got a custom Chanel. I thought this was fine? I had a weird premonition that she would win Best Actress, but that did not happen. Her film – I’m Still Here – did win Best International Film, which was thrilling for Brazilians.

Lily-Rose Depp’s Chanel roots are generational – her mother is a long-time Chanel devotee and brand ambassador, and Lily basically inherited the Chanel contract. I know Lily-Rose is the kind of woman Chanel wants to dress, but this is giving me nothing.

Margaret Qualley’s Chanel look was my second-favorite after Lupita’s. There were several women in velvet, and this was one of the better options.

And finally, Penelope Cruz is a long-time Chanel devotee and this felt like something she has already worn a million times, and like it was already in her closet.

Florence Pugh wore Rodarte to the Governors Awards: Old Hollywood with a twist?

Here are more fashion photos from last night’s Governors Awards, which were untelevised. Florence Pugh really killed it in her Rodarte look, and I love the way Pugh can really work across the board, style-wise. She can do punk, she can do shaved-head & couture, she can do athleisure, and she can do Old Hollywood. She’s giving, like, Jean Harlow vibes. Her hair is a great length and a great color right now – such a terrific shade of blonde. As for the dress, I could do without the peplum, quite honestly. But the rest of it is lovely.

Emily Blunt in Miu Miu. The combination of her dress and her fillers/Botox makes her look so severe.

Natalie Portman in Schiaparelli. Speaking of severe! No, it works – the red lip, the slinky dress. I’m worried about the bust but the girls didn’t pop out, so it was fine.

Julianne Moore in Valentino, with Charles Melton. Melton looks like James Bond! Julianne looks great, I love that she went with some sparkle.

Olivia Rodrigo in vintage Yves Saint Laurent. Very… Cindy Crawford.

Penelope Cruz in Chanel. Penelope loves a ruffled dress, my God. She turns 50 in April, can you believe that?

Kristen Stewart truly turned up at the Oscars with greasy hair & booty shorts

Before Will Smith smacked Chris Rock, I thought one of the big stories of the Oscars would be the fact that one of the Best Actress nominees turned up in satin booty shorts and greasy hair. Sigh. Kristen Stewart, a long-time face of Chanel, wore Chanel to the Oscars. We were all expecting her to wear Chanel. We just thought it would be some hideous dress with weirdly-placed buttons and a limp peplum. Were we prepared for satin booty shorts? I was not. Like, I’m not completely opposed to the idea of this look, but I think it could have been executed so much better at every level. Her styling was horrible and the shorts themselves weren’t even that great!! If you’re going to wear shorts to the Oscars, they better be GREAT shorts. These were not. Kristen’s fiancee Dylan Meyer looked great though, at least one of them got their hair done for the Oscars.

Penelope Cruz also “got” to wear Chanel, because of her long ties to the brand. Penelope, much like Kristen, is often poorly served by Chanel. I absolutely think that’s what happened here – they gave her a shiny navy sack with little buttons down the front and she was like “I have to wear THIS?” I will also say that Javier Bardem has been having a flat-out great time throughout the awards season. He’s really been enjoying himself. They seem really happy!

And here’s Naomi Scott, sort of randomly (she and Kristen worked together on that ill-fated Charlie’s Angels reboot). Naomi wore this purple satin Fendi, a rather severe look for the Oscars. It occurs to me that this feels like a very Met Gala, look, right? Almost as if she was trying to adhere to some kind of theme. Anyway, I don’t really dislike it or anything. I love the color and I don’t mind a more severe silhouette at the Oscars.

What was worse: Penelope Cruz’s bangs trauma or her taffeta Chanel dress?

The Museum Of Modern Art Film Benefit Gala in NYC

Last night was the 2021 Museum of Modern Art’s film benefit, and Penelope Cruz was the honoree this year. While Penelope wasn’t shortlisted for Best Actress at the Golden Globes or Critics Choice nomination announcements this week, she could actually end up a contender at the Oscars. The Academy loves Penelope’s collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar. Penelope is his muse and has been for decades. They have a film coming out next week called Parallel Mothers, and it’s already receiving widespread critical praise and love. I would assume this film benefit was at least partially about her long-standing work with Pedro Almodovar.

For the benefit, Penelope wore this Chanel gown which… is sort of a mullet dress. It’s also taffeta, and there’s a big dumb bow on the bust of the dress. It’s just awful!!! I can’t believe that this is CHANEL. And I can barely even describe my loathing of Penelope’s bangs. They completely change her lovely face! They’re too short! They’re just ugly!

Diane Kruger attended the event – she wore a two-piece Emilia Wickstead. I actually love the fabric and the floral pattern. I just think the actual design of the dress kind of sucks. It’s winter in New York, I don’t need to see your rib cage.

Riley Keough was there, in what looks like a Chanel suit. She was arguably the best-dressed woman at the event from the photos I saw. I don’t even mind her messy bangs.

I think Anne Hathaway wore Chanel too, but I can’t find an ID on her dress here. The dress itself is boring/fine, but paired with white boots… no. No no no.

Zendaya in Balmain & Bulgari at the Venice ‘Dune’ premiere: completely stunning?

Dune - The 78th Venice International Film Festival

The Venice Film Festival was in full swing over the holiday weekend here in America, and I am thrilled to have so many fashion photos! People were really waiting to bring out some big, dramatic fashion, and Venice is where it’s at. Friday night was the big Venice premiere of Dune, the much-delayed film starring Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet (among many others). Producers really pushed Z and and Timmy to do the Venice promotion together and it’s cute as hell. For the premiere, Zendaya wore this incredible Balmain gown which looks like it was sculpted onto her body. I usually hate that beige-y nude shade but it works on Zendaya. She paired the gown with Bulgari jewels and I’m in awe of the size of that emerald. Timothee wore a sparkly Haider Ackermann suit and jewelry by Cartier.

Penélope Cruz in Chanel. Honestly, one of the best Chanel gowns I’ve seen in a while, and one of the best looks I’ve seen on Penelope in a while.

Dakota Johnson in Gucci at The Lost Daughter premiere. I’m an undercover Dakota stan and I think this is kind of a snooze on her. She looks amazing in rich colors and this stringy metallic look is just kind of blah on her.

Penelope Cruz in Versace at UK ‘Zoolander 2′ premiere: stunning or cheap?

wenn23450819

For the past week, various members of the Zoolander 2 cast have been making their way through Europe, doing smaller premieres and photocalls. But last night was the big London premiere, and everyone came out for it. Everyone but Benedict Cumberbatch, and I was really hoping he would come! I guess he’s working on Doctor Strange and he couldn’t get away. Sad. Anyway, there was a surprising lack of big fashion moments from the premiere, but I’ve tried to select some of the best or most interesting looks. Let’s start with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, or Derek and Hansel. Owen has seemed to be having the most fun out of everyone.

wenn23451445

Here’s Penelope Cruz in Atelier Versace. Considering the latest Versace collection is really messy and poorly designed, I kind of think Penelope picked the best look available to her. It’s simple and kind of game-show-hostess-y.

wenn23450623

Kristin Wiig wore vintage Yves Saint Laurent (and Prada shoes). All I have to say is… this? Really? You’re going to carefully select a vintage look for a big fashion-friendly event and you choose this ill-fitting cocktail dress with an ugly stomach bow? I like Wiig a lot, but whenever I see her on the red carpet, I feel like she’s taking style cues from Jennifer Aniston and Wiig is much, much better than that.

wenn23450841

Jourdan Dunn in Ralph & Russo. This was one of my favorite looks. On another woman, it would have been a hot mess, but this looks cute on her.

wenn23451101

I can’t find the ID on Lara Stone’s dress. It’s cute, but a lot of women did metallics on this carpet and Lara didn’t stand out at all.

wenn23451263

Natalie Dormer in Blumarine. She certainly got her girls out for the cameras, didn’t she? If the V wasn’t so wide and everything wasn’t falling out, I would have really liked this dress.

wenn23450874

Justin Theroux. *sad clown noise* It’s a little bit funny that Jennifer Aniston hasn’t come out to support her husband’s film at all, right?
