Cannes: Cate Blanchett in LV; Simone Ashley in Westwood; Viola Davis in Gucci

The Cannes Film Festival is finally over and done with, and we now have a few months to recover for the double-whammy of Venice and Toronto. First, let’s get to the Cannes Film Festival’s winners. While Jennifer Lawrence left Cannes with a lot of awards-season buzz, she did not pick up an acting award for Die, My Love. The acting awards went to Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent (a Brazilian film) and Nadia Melliti for The Little Sister. The Palme d’Or (the grand prize of the festival) went to an Iranian film, Un Simple Accident. The runner-up prize, the Grand Prix, went to Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. The Jury Prize went to two films: Sirât and Sound of Falling. Distributor Neon has now won the Palme d’Or six years in a row. Incredible.

Now, let’s get to the fashion. The last days of Cannes were surprisingly great when it came to fashion moments, too bad that most people were already burned out from all of the Z-listers traipsing around in terrible gowns. Let’s start with the queen, Cate Blanchett, who wore a custom Louis Vuitton. Why doesn’t LV make this kind of dress for their brand ambassadors, huh?

More fashion notes: Simone Ashley’s Vivienne Westwood dress is a DREAM and all of the fashion girls are obsessed; Viola Davis stunned in Gucci; Elle Fanning’s Chanel fairy-princess look is on brand, but I think she could do better; I’m not crazy about Aubrey Plaza’s Miu Miu or Margaret Qualley’s Chanel; Halle Berry (Cannes jury member) ended the festival in Dior, which was good except for the shoulders; Gillian Anderson’s Emilia Wickstead dress is truly one of my favorite dresses ever, that shade of green, the way she styled it, the cut, it’s all perfect.

Kim Kardashian wore Balenciaga at the VF Oscar party: a bridal mess?

I remember reading some internet analysis of what the Kardashian-Jenner thinnification meant culturally and economically. I forget what indicators the person used, but basically it was like, the thinner Kim Kardashian gets, the more likely America will face a recession and a return to a “heroin chic” aesthetic. I bring this up because suddenly, it looks like Kim Kardashian is no longer in her Ozempic Era. Kim wore this strapless white Balenciaga ball gown to the VF Oscar party and I know the acres of fabric are hiding her body, but I can tell from her bust and her face that she’s gained some weight back. Recession Watch over?? Nah, we’re going to need some new economic indicators.

Kendall Jenner in Mugler – this could have been interesting on someone with the pizzazz to pull it off and make it seem funny and sassy. Instead, Kendall just has a wet-blanket aesthetic.

Margaret Qualley in what I think is a custom Chanel (I could be wrong). The color is wrong? It’s too orange-red for her coloring, she needs a blue-red.

Ana de Armas’ party outfit made me laugh out loud. The bandeau top and the skirt… it’s hilarious.

Lizzo has been on a weight-loss kick for a few years and she honestly looks great. I have no idea about all of her legal issues, but she truly looks happy, healthy and glowing.

Stephanie Hsu – I hope she has a huge career, I love her so much and I’m still mad that Jamie Lee Curtis won supporting actress that year.

Lupita Nyong’o had the best dress out of all of the Chanel-clad Oscar attendees

Lupita Nyong’o is one of the latest brand ambassadors for Chanel. Originally, I thought it was bad luck for Lupita, who is usually known as one of the best-dressed women on any given red carpet. I thought she would be confined by Chanel’s tweed-and-pearls philosophy. Instead, something magical happened – Chanel’s designers have been customizing some of their best gowns for Lupita, and she looks like the second coming of Audrey Hepburn. Lupita’s Chanel look at last night’s Oscars was one of my favorites of the night. I love how they incorporated the “Chanel pearls” into her hair.

Fernanda Torres also got a custom Chanel. I thought this was fine? I had a weird premonition that she would win Best Actress, but that did not happen. Her film – I’m Still Here – did win Best International Film, which was thrilling for Brazilians.

Lily-Rose Depp’s Chanel roots are generational – her mother is a long-time Chanel devotee and brand ambassador, and Lily basically inherited the Chanel contract. I know Lily-Rose is the kind of woman Chanel wants to dress, but this is giving me nothing.

Margaret Qualley’s Chanel look was my second-favorite after Lupita’s. There were several women in velvet, and this was one of the better options.

And finally, Penelope Cruz is a long-time Chanel devotee and this felt like something she has already worn a million times, and like it was already in her closet.

Angelina Jolie wore Elie Saab to the Critics Choice Awards: fine or meh?

Here are some photos from Friday night’s Critics Choice Awards. This will probably be Angelna Jolie’s final appearance during the awards season, unless she’s invited to present at the SAGs or Oscars, I guess. You never know – she is a two-time Oscar winner already, so it’s more than possible that the Academy would invite her to be a presenter. Anyway, Angelina did not leave the awards season with a bang. She chose this peachy-beige-tea-rose lace Elie Saab Spring 2025 gown which… eh. I’m mad at the color, I’m mad at her hair these days. But overall, I’m happy that it wasn’t a sack dress and it also feels like she’s been venturing out of her comfort zone here and there. It ended up being an okay night for Jolie – that POS Chelsea Handler didn’t even say her name, and Demi Moore went over and hugged Angelina when Demi won Best Actress. It feels like Angelina has made some new friendships during this season.

Michelle Yeoh kind of disappointed me too? She wore this absolutely terrible Balenciaga look. Her hair also looked… not-great. She has great hair too, but it’s too “flat” and lifeless here.

Lupita Nyong’o was one of several women wearing Chanel. I, uh, don’t think Lupita got the best Chanel look, honestly. She’s always beautiful, but this is a minidress with black tulle and it looks like a homemade fashion project.

Margaret Qualley in Chanel – she’s been wearing Chanel throughout the awards season, and she has a good Chanel contract. I actually sort of like this? It’s more flowy and romantic than I would normally associate with Chanel.

Jodie Foster in Chanel – the dress is super-conservative and very “Jodie,” but can I just say? I love her hair these days. That choppy bob is killer and I love the subtle grey streaks. Her colorist is doing a great job.

I’ve been a fan of Margaret Qualley since she starred in The Leftovers. When I found out she was Andie MacDowell’s daughter, it didn’t change my opinion of her, but I definitely thought, “Oh, she got this role because of her mom.” Since then, Margaret has been slowly making a name for herself and coming into her own as an actress. She fell onto the Swifties’ radar after she married Jack Antoff in 2023 and since then, has appeared in more artsy movies. Most recently, Margaret really proved herself by going up against Demi Moore in The Substance. Well, y’all, the tables have turned for Margaret and Andie. Things have come full circle and we are starting to see our first cases of “reverse nepotism.”

Andie MacDowell shared her own twist on the conversation around nepotism in Hollywood. The longtime actor told Jimmy Fallon on Thursday’s episode of “The Tonight Show” that she’s experiencing “reverse nepotism” due to the fame of her daughter, “The Substance” star Margaret Qualley.

MacDowell, who starred in the 1993 hit “Groundhog Day,” has become what “they always accuse the children of,” she told Fallon.

“I’m now cool, because I’m Margaret Qualley’s mom,” she said, noting it’s a “double whammy” because she’s also mother-in-law to Qualley’s husband, music producer and “Bleachers” singer Jack Antonoff.

She added that she’ll find “letters in the mailbox” from fans, “and you know, they’re 13!”

Qualley herself has no problem acknowledging the leg up she got from having a movie star mom. The actor reassured podcast host Josh Horowitz earlier this month, “You can call me a nepo baby.”

This is too funny! I’m trying to think of other instances in which I became familiar with a nepo baby before I knew who their famous parent was, and the only ones I can think of off the top of my mind are Gwyneth Paltrow (Meet the Parents was my intro to Blythe Danner), Ben Stiller (Jerry was before my time), and Michael Douglas (Kirk was also before my time). I consider Margaret to be in the same nepo baby lane as Jack Quaid, Colin Hanks, and Jason Ritter. They absolutely benefited from nepotism but also are talented and well-liked enough within the industry to have forged legitimate careers beyond that. I’m also glad that Margaret is one of those nepo babies who’s grown up to be not only talented but also not a mess. I admit, I was a little worried for her when she was dating Pete Davidson and then Shia LaBeouf, but if that was the most of her acting out phase, then Andie did good.

Jimmy also brings up that Andie is currently celebrating her 40th anniversary as a spokesperson for L’Oréal. As he’s joking with her about how many times she’s said their catch phrase, “Because I’m worth it” over the years, Andie brings something up that I thought was really poignant. She said that she used to think it was nice when they changed it up to say, “Because you’re worth it”, but as she’s aged, she finds the first-person version of it to be more powerful, explaining, “People tend to diminish you as you age, so it means something to me to be able to say, ‘Because I’m worth it.’” I love that so much.

Margaret Qualley got year-long acne from The Substance’s face prosthetics

As I’ve mentioned in several posts now, I saw The Substance over the holidays and I loathed it. While I thought it was an interesting concept and *some* of the body horror was well-executed, they really drove the whole story off of a f–king cliff for the last hour. It was trying to be high-minded about the toxic messages of worshipping youth and beauty, but they also wanted to exploit youth and beauty too. Anyway, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley did the best they could with the material they were given, and both actresses are getting nominations all over the place. Demi has been campaigning more than Margaret, but Margaret has just introduced a “struggle narrative” to her campaign. Apparently, because of all of the facial prosthetics, she had a severe breakout which affected her for about a year.

In a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Margaret Qualley said it took “a year” for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by the face prosthetics used in “The Substance.” The damage was so bad that director Coralie Fargeat had to frame out her face in certain shots.

“At the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so f–ked up,” Qualley said. “They couldn’t shoot my face anymore.”

The acne from the prosthetics lasted long after “The Substance” wrapped and persisted as she began shooting her next film, “Kinds of Kindness,” in which she played four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. Luckily, the acne played to her benefit in the Yorgos Lanthimos drama.

“So, you know the character that has all that acne? That was just my acne from the prosthetics,” Qualley said. “And I was like, ‘Oh this is kind of perfect. I’m playing all these different characters. For one of them, we’ll use all my crazy prosthetic acne.’ It took me probably a year to recover physically from all of it.”

This reminded me of Scarlett Johansson talking about how all of the Marvel actors get rashes from their superhero suits and they basically have dermatologists on stand-by. Honestly, as someone who gets a rash at the drop of a hat, Margaret’s story is its own horror story. She should sue! Seriously, her skin’s reaction to those janky prosthetics affected her work! Was anyone else surprised by Demi Moore’s Golden Globe win? She won the Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for The Substance. First of all, The Substance isn’t a comedy or a musical. Second of all, The Substance is awful. Once I saw it, I could not believe that it was getting so much awards-season attention. While Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley do the best they can with the material, the film takes an interesting concept and then drives it off a f–king cliff for the last hour.

All of which to say, I was surprised that Demi won a Globe. She really gave a barn-burner speech though, and it’s remarkable to think that in Demi’s long and well-documented career, this is the first time she’s ever picked up a major award. While she was prepared for the moment with a big speech, I was meh on her style. She wore a champagne-colored Armani. It wasn’t flattering?

Margaret Qualley, Demi’s “other half,” wore Chanel to the Globes. I like this, and she’s always in Chanel. This is actually one of the better Chanel looks in recent years, right?

Tilda Swinton also wore Chanel – very fancy.
