demi lovato Fashion Lea Michele Lily James Met Gala Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling wore Gaurav Gupta to the Met Gala: one of the best looks?

Yes, I’ve complained a lot about how many women wore sand/beige, but I have to say, Mindy Kaling was probably one of my favorite looks of the Met Gala. She wore this epic, sculptural Gaurav Gupta. She said it’s supposed to be “the melting flower of time”. It was great from every angle and while I definitely think it would have worked in a different color, this looked wonderful on her.

Lily James wore a custom Erdem. I loved the simplicity of this, honestly. It feels like a lot of women were overthinking the themes and Lily was just like “no, a simple dress with a minimalist floral.”

Demi Lovato’s Prabal Gurung was another one I unexpectedly enjoyed. Demi had not gone to a Met Gala since 2018 (Demi suggested that they came close to relapsing right after that one). This Gurung was really fun!

Lea Michele wore Rodarte and this was the debut of her baby bump (she’s expecting her second). This was one of the cheapest-looking dresses on the carpet.

Ana de Armas wore a ‘stained glass’ Louis Vuitton to the VF Oscar party

Ana De Armas changed into this custom Louis Vuitton dress for the post-Oscar parties. I would think that we’re supposed to see “stained glass windows.” It’s not bad and hey, it does look comfortable. It’s just a slipdress with an interesting fabric. The cutest was when Ana saw Ke Huy Quan on the VF carpet and they gave each other a big hug. From the looks of things, Ana is a big EEAAO stan and she was rooting for all of those actors. Plus, I think everyone who was part of this awards season fell in love with Ke – he made everyone smile and he was hugging everybody.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton – um, real talk, Sophie looks GREAT. I love when a pale redhead goes witchy, and this is very witchy.

Janelle Monáe in bespoke AREA. I mean… she’s not wearing any underwear or anything. How are you going to the VF party with no drawers on?? Still, she has a gorgeous figure.

Rooney Mara, I think this is McQueen? I am truly so mad about her style at the Oscars and here at the VF party. I loathe this, even if I want to give her credit for at least trying to wear something other than off-white or black.

Lily James in Versace. It’s been done a million times but she looks good. It feels like something Kim Kardashian wore a decade ago.

Fan Bingbing in silver and pink – I don’t like this but I also think…it’s fine. It is what it is. She looks like a vintage movie star, honestly.

Lily James in Tamara Ralph at the BAFTAs: weird but kind of cool?

Lily James is a British actress who plays Americans so well you can’t really tell where she’s from. Like if you told me she was American and just really good at accents I would believe you. There’s something so carefree about her that she gives an American, specifically Californian, vibe. She was at the BAFTAs in a cool looking white Tamara Ralph gown with a cage bodice made of pearls. I’ve seen so many gowns at this point in my career that I’m impressed with a novel detail that isn’t horribly fug. This dress doesn’t need the giant bow at the back, that’s too much, but the split neckline with the nautical cage is theatrical and awesome. Props to the designer. It also fits her like a glove. She looks great with dark hair too.

Julianne Moore was in a black strapless Saint Laurent gown with a white feather shrug. I follow her on Instagram and she posted on her stories that she had her hair done but did her own makeup with Hourglass cosmetics! She’s a brand ambassador. I checked and that’s way out of my price range but she looks amazing. I also like this take on the black and white trend. It’s much better than a white dress with black gloves for instance. Her jewelry is Bvlgari! She’s 62 and I’ll have what she’s having.

Nominee Jamie Lee Curtis was also in Saint Laurent, and she’s having fun this awards season. I hope she ups her style at the Oscars. This looks like someone threw a velvet jacket over a white dress as an afterthought. At least make it fitted.

Hong Chau was also nominated in Curtis’s category, Best Supporting Actress (that went to Kerry Condon). She did the black and white trend expertly in this incredible Erdem gown with one of the coolest prints I’ve ever seen. I’m assuming that’s digitally printed and I love how it merges thin geometric lines with large floral details. This is a thoughtful cool looking gown that’s a work of art.

Hayley Atwell was a miss for me in Cong Tri. Maybe this would work without the threaded top. It’s like some junior designers had a brainstorming session for new ideas. “What if we took tassel trim and made a shirt out of it?”

Anya Taylor Joy in Dior at the Critics Choice: fug leotard or ballerina-chic?

Here are photos from last night’s Critics Choice Awards, a pretty boring awards show overall, and definitely lacking in the kind of drunken shenanigans of the Golden Globes. Anya Taylor-Joy wore this beige/flesh-tone Dior which… it’s bad. In general, I dislike when pale, wispy blondes go for beige/nude/flesh colors, but in this particular case, I think the issue was definitely the skirt and the granny panties. No disrespect to granny panties – I wear them myself. But this Dior is definitely giving “budget leotard” and not high-end couture.

Michelle Williams in custom Louis Vuitton Not the best, not the worst. Design-wise, it seems a bit meh, but she looks pretty and sparkly.

Kate Hudson in Oscar de la Renta. I really liked this? Was it something we’ve seen a million times before? Sure. But was it also a very good version of something familiar? Also yes.

Julia Roberts in Schiaparelli. I was shocked that Julia wore something with such a simple, sleek and elegant design and I was surprised that this was Schiaparelli, a label which is known for putting giant boob hooks on dresses. Anway, I loved this and I would wear it.

I truly cannot get over Lily James in this Versace. It’s SO BAD. Ladies, never wear a dress that does this to your bust. And just avoid stiff, stripped, tulle ruffles.

Ana de Armas Brad Pitt Golden Globes Lily James Margot Robbie

Brad Pitt looked especially pulled & tweaked at the 2023 Golden Globes

Brad Pitt was nominated for Babylon at the Golden Globes, but he didn’t win and he didn’t walk the carpet. His new rent-a-girlfriend wasn’t with him (that I saw), so he arrived undercover and then he was seated at the Babylon table with Margot Robbie. It’s probably a good thing he didn’t walk the carpet – we would have gotten more unflattering angles of his very recent face work. We saw some telephoto-lens pics of him in Cabo a few weeks ago and he looked visibly “worked on” even in those pics. I think he was probably healing – this is Pitt all shiny and pulled and tweaked in time for the Golden Globes. Anyway, it’s just a reminder that Pitt was welcome in that room and people gave him shout-outs on stage, even though he assaulted his wife and children on a plane.

Margot Robbie wore this boring-ass Chanel dress – she was nominated for Babylon as well and she lost. Robbie should be counting down the days until her Chanel contract runs out, this collaboration has been awful. Someone described this as Midwestern prom dress and they’re right.

Ana de Armas also phoned it in with her contractual Louis Vuitton look. It’s weird because LV has actually made some nice stuff for Ana in the past, but this was not great.

Lily James was hilariously doing way too much in this giant Versace gown. It was super-unflattering too, the cutouts were too tight.

Blake Lively Fashion gabrielle union Lily James Met Gala

Blake Lively wore Versace to co-chair the 2022 Met Gala: ugh or fine?

Blake Lively cares. She cares about fashion, and she wants to support designers and they want her to wear her clothes. Personally, I think Blake makes most high-fashion look downmarket and like she got it from the mall. So it was with this Versace look, which she wore to the 2022 Met Gala. Blake & Ryan Reynolds are regulars at the Met Gala, and this year they were co-chairs for the gala. First, a word about Ryan: he looked spectacular, like he stepped out of The Gilded Age. His Ralph Lauren tuxedo was velvet and a rich chocolate brown. As for Blake… her interpretation of American Fashion/Gilded Glamour was to wear a reversible/two-part Versace which was supposed to invoke the Statue of Liberty. As in, bronze when Lady Liberty started out, then oxidized into a greenish blue color. She “transformed” on the steps. It was all a bit much, but whatever. At least she thought it out.

Gabrielle Union also wore Versace. This was fine – many women just went with “big, sparkly dresses” and that’s a legitimate interpretation to me. She looked lovely. I love that Dwyane Wade brought some heat.

Lily James just wore a relatively simple Versace dress. It looked nice on her.

Kristen Stewart wore a Chanel jumpsuit to the Spirit Awards: improved or nope?

Here are some fashion photos from Sunday’s Independent Spirit Awards. Kristen Stewart was the “chair” of the Spirit Awards this year, which just means she’s the big-name celebrity they got to act in an honorary position and hand out one of the big awards. K-Stew is a big indie queen but this was her first time at the Spirit Awards and she seemed to be enjoying herself in an awkward way. She wore this Chanel suit/jumpsuit which I actually really liked? We were just complaining about how Kristen gets sent the f–king worst Chanel looks, then she turns up in this! I hope Chanel gives her something good for the Oscars, but I bet they make her wear some hideous, stiff tulle and satin mess.

There is absolutely an Andrew Garfield Hive and I am trying to placate them. Andrew wore a lovely purple sport coat to the Spirit Awards.

Lily James in Del Core. There were so many midriffs at the Spirit Awards! This top doesn’t do much for her.

Sydney Sweeney is everywhere these days. She wore Miu Miu – this was actually one of my favorite looks of the night.

Julia Fox’s fifteen minutes are not up yet. Sigh…

Regina Hall looked fantastic! This was my favorite look. My only complaint was that I think the sleeve was just a tad too tight. Regina will be one of the hosts of the Oscars, remember?

Daveed Diggs in Moschino. Colorful! I love when men eschew black or blue suits.

I can’t believe Sosie Bacon is old enough to have a grown-up boyfriend, but she is, in fact, 29 years old. She attended the Spirit Awards with her boyfriend Scoot McNairy.
