Olivia Rodrigo wore a vintage 1995 Versace to the Grammys: very cute?

Olivia Rodrigo is such a princess! She turned up at the Grammys in a vintage 1995 Versace which was super-cute, although I probably would have put her in something else. Olivia was nominated for several Grammys for her sophomore album, and her first single from the album, “Vampire.” While Olivia claims that she has no beef with anyone, there was clearly some kind of falling out between Olivia and Taylor Swift, to the point where some fans even suggested that “Vampire” was about Taylor (I don’t think it is, but it was a conversation). In any case, when Olivia performed the song, there was a cutaway to Taylor singing and dancing to it. Beef quashed??

Kylie Minogue wore custom Dolce & Gabbana. She looked great and she won a Grammy! Kylie is forever, but she won new fans with “Padam Padam.”

Ice Spice looked really good in Baby Phat, but I’m starting to get the feeling that her 15 minutes are up.

Janelle Monae: ‘sometimes you have to say no… you’ll miss out on opportunities’

Janelle Monae just released their latest album, “The Age of Pleasure,” on Friday. In promotion of it, they did an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe and talked about their inspirations and thought process. I sometimes find Zane Lowe’s interviews a little annoying — he knows his stuff, but can talk over the guests too much — but this one was a good one. In particular, Janelle talked about some advice Prince shared that she still takes to heart.

It’s been several years since Janelle Monáe worked with Prince on 2013’s The Electric Lady and beyond, but the musician still holds his advice close.

In a new interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the multi-hyphenate star revealed what the late superstar taught them about overcoming nerves — in both music and life.

“Cut it down in half. That’s what Prince would say to his band,” Monáe, 37, shared. “He would be like, sometimes when people have jitters or nervous or whatever, they play too fast or they’re talking fast. He’s like, ‘Cut everything down in half.’ ”

“And I take that approach in life, cut it down in half,” Monáe added.

As the musician explained, “Sometimes you have to say no,” and “Sometimes you’ll miss out on opportunities that you think could have taken you to the next level.”

“Because it’s always like, well, what if they don’t call me anymore? That fear, you got to deal with that. I had to deal with it,” they then said. “I was like, you know what? I have to realize being present for me is my north star.”

“If I’m split between all these different worlds, and I’m always thinking about what’s next? What’s next? What’s next? Was I here? Did I live? Did I really live, or was I sort of spending so much time planning and worrying and worrying and rehearsing what could happen and what I need to do next,” they added.

“My fear was always messing up publicly or doing something that feeds into that perfectionism, that feeds into, I had to deal with rejection, abandonment issues, all of that. I literally had to go back to the root of where is this stemming from? But I didn’t even know I was dealing with it because I was so in it.”

[From People]

Apparently Janelle and Prince were quite close after working together in 2013 and his death affected her so that she took a break from music when she no longer had him as a sounding board. I do think Prince’s advice to Janelle is applicable to everyone, not just in music, but in life. I’m a big proponent of the “cut everything down in half” approach. Maybe it’s because I’ve observed it a lot, in others and myself, but when you do things too fast, without thinking it through or taking the time to do it properly, you definitely don’t get the best results. And certainly the advice about sometimes saying no goes with that as well. You may miss out on some opportunities by saying no, but it does also open you up to other opportunities that may not have been available had you said yes to the first thing. Maybe they’re not the exact same or same type of opportunities, but they’re opportunities all the same. I like how Janelle frames it here, by talking about being present in one world instead of split between a million different things.

Cardi B channeled Karl Lagerfeld in Chen Peng at the Met Gala: fabulous?

Cardi B is such a fashionista. She loves going to fashion shows, she loves walking red carpets and she especially loves the Met Gala. Cardi changed her look like four times at this year’s Met Gala, but for most of the carpet, she wore this Thom Browne Chen Peng look which was clearly based on the entire aesthetic of Karl Lagerfeld as a person and his designs. I loved how many women did variations of “interpreting Karl Lagerfeld’s look,” rather than grabbing a Chanel frock. There was so much ingenuity at play with how people interpreted the theme.

Janelle Monae wore Thom Browne (Cardi did too, in a different look). The fashion critics were going crazy about this but I find it… surprisingly unremarkable? There was the hooped “costume,” and then she removed various parts of the costume to reveal a sheer hoop skirt, and her bra and panties. Lady Gaga did something similar one year.

Olivia Rodrigo in Thom Browne. I love this? It’s great, minus the baby-bangs. That was a (terrible) trend last night too – so many baby bangs.

Teyana Taylor in Thom Browne. I love this too, such a clever interpretation. Thom Browne really did an amazing job with their ladies.

Ana de Armas wore a ‘stained glass’ Louis Vuitton to the VF Oscar party

Ana De Armas changed into this custom Louis Vuitton dress for the post-Oscar parties. I would think that we’re supposed to see “stained glass windows.” It’s not bad and hey, it does look comfortable. It’s just a slipdress with an interesting fabric. The cutest was when Ana saw Ke Huy Quan on the VF carpet and they gave each other a big hug. From the looks of things, Ana is a big EEAAO stan and she was rooting for all of those actors. Plus, I think everyone who was part of this awards season fell in love with Ke – he made everyone smile and he was hugging everybody.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton – um, real talk, Sophie looks GREAT. I love when a pale redhead goes witchy, and this is very witchy.

Janelle Monáe in bespoke AREA. I mean… she’s not wearing any underwear or anything. How are you going to the VF party with no drawers on?? Still, she has a gorgeous figure.

Rooney Mara, I think this is McQueen? I am truly so mad about her style at the Oscars and here at the VF party. I loathe this, even if I want to give her credit for at least trying to wear something other than off-white or black.

Lily James in Versace. It’s been done a million times but she looks good. It feels like something Kim Kardashian wore a decade ago.

Fan Bingbing in silver and pink – I don’t like this but I also think…it’s fine. It is what it is. She looks like a vintage movie star, honestly.

Fashion Janelle Monae Mindy Kaling Oscars

Mindy Kaling looked tiny in two tragic Vera Wang dresses at the Oscars

The only joke which really landed and made me chuckle was the one about Ozempic, the diabetes drug which is being widely used/abused in Hollywood to drastically lose weight quickly. Jimmy Kimmel joked that everyone in the auditorium looked nice and “I can’t help but wonder, ‘Is Ozempic right for me?’” I bring this up because…Mindy Kaling was one of the presenters at the Oscars. She wore two Vera Wang gowns – the white one for the carpet, the black one to present. We’ve talked about how small she is these days, but her weight loss was really driven home in these dresses. Plus, the dresses are just… bad.

Janelle Monae also wore Vera Wang. Like, when did Vera Wang get so funky? Wang used to make pretty and simple gowns in pastels, stuff which looked vaguely “ice-skater princess.” Now it’s traffic-cone orange skirts and structured bustiers? This skirt is tragique, by the way, and not just because it’s orange. Janelle is so beautiful, I wish she made different style choices!

Janelle Monae wore custom Cong Tri at the Image Awards: gorgeous?

Janelle Monae gave up her black-and-white suits and Dr. Seuss-type fashion and the result has been incredible. She’s a goddess and she dresses like it now! Janelle attended the NAACP Image Awards in this custom Cong Tri. The dress itself looks like a million other cut-out dresses we’ve seen before, but because we rarely see Janelle in anything so sultry, she stands out. She looks incredible!

Issa Rae looked like a bridesmaid, but she did a really great bit with Jonathan Majors. That lovely Virgo man!

Kerry Washington in custom Fendi Couture. Imagine getting something customized and it comes out looking like… a boring-ass black dress.

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade received the President’s Award for their work on trans issues publicly and privately with their daughter Zaya. This moved me to tears.

Julia Garner in Gucci at the LACMA Art + Film gala: striking and retro?

Kaiser and I are splitting up the LACMA Art Film gala images into a few posts this morning as a lot of big names came out. I have mixed feelings about these galas coming back, honestly. I wanted to talk about Julia Garner, in the event’s sponsor Gucci, because she killed it. Her styling in incredible and I love this full coverage black sequin gown with flame-like cutouts. It has pockets too! This is old Hollywood glamour. Julia was there with her husband, Mark Foster.

Billie Eilish was fun and comfortable in head-to-toe Gucci bespoke pajamas, where she made her red carpet debut with her boyfriend Jesse Rutherford. (Peridot talked about them here.) I love this trend of celebrities wearing blankets on the red carpet, which arguably began with ASAP Rocky and Rihanna at the Met Gala. Billie and Jesse look loved-up.

Laura Harrier started off as a model and it shows. This brown hoodie gown is Saint Laurent and check out the side cutouts. So elegant and her cuff and bracelet complement it perfectly.

Janelle Monae was regal in a long Gucci gown with a stacked pearl necklace and a crown. I appreciate their commitment to black and white looks and it somehow always looks fresh. This is similarly retro and Janelle is pulling it off.

Elizabeth Banks was in Michael Kors. I dislike this natural makeup trend honestly and think this needs different styling. I’m a fussy b-tch though and I like to look done up most days.

Elliot Page is dating Mae Martin! Mae is a Canadian comedian and they’ve been together since at least this summer. I love to see Elliot happy.
