Jaden Smith’s ‘vampire castle’ Grammy headwear explained

When it comes to award show dress codes, the Grammys are without a doubt the most liberal. Wanna show up as a besequined trapeze artist? Take the big swing. Wanna be carried in as an egg to hatch on stage? Gaga, you were born that way. Basically, the craziest costume to don at the Grammys is… a classically beautiful evening gown of the variety that’s sought at most other award shows. So I wonder if Jaden Smith saw himself in his fairly straightlaced Louis Vuitton black suit & tie with white shirt, and realized he had to add something to make the look Grammys appropriate. Enter the house. Or to be more precise, the ABODI Wearable Vampire Castle Headpiece from an avant garde European fashion brand that draws on vampire folklore from its founding designer’s heritage. Obviously, ABODI Transylvania is thrilled with the recent exposure — even in daylight!

For Jaden Smith, home is where the art is.

The 26-year-old son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith caused some nosy neighbors to wonder about his look when he walked the red carpet of the 2025 Grammy Awards Feb. 2.

For the event, which was also attended by his dad and sister Willow Smith, Jaden rocked a custom black Louis Vuitton suit, a white button down and black tie. But the most notable part of his ensemble was the all-black, custom-made vampire house headpiece made by ABODI Transylvania in collaboration with artist Szilveszter Makó that covered most of his head and face, an art piece the brand has since shed some light on.

“The whole process of creating the headpiece was a fantastic experience, from sketching to testing and realisation,” the company wrote in a Feb. 2 Instagram of the look. “The artist headpiece combines the mysterious elegance of ABODI Transylvania with a bold, modern design inspired by Transylvanian history and the vampire legends of the Bathori.”

The company’s founder Dora Abodi — who uses Transylvania’s legends and folklore as inspiration to honor her family’s deep history with the country, according to the company’s website — also shared her thoughts on the buzzy look.

“The fields of fashion and music are intended for enjoyment and the pursuit of creativity, allowing individuals to express themselves freely and experience life and art to the fullest,” Dora shared in a statement on the company’s Instagram Feb. 2. “The now famous ABODI Transylvania Vampire Castle serves as a symbol of audacity, fortitude, and an embrace of folklore and legends.”

[From E! News]

When is a house not a home? When it’s a vampire castle worn like a hat! Some ask why Jaden Smith decided to wear that vampire castle on his head; I ask, why did he decide to wear the vampire castle headpiece… when it’s the least interesting item in ABODI Transylvania’s line?! I mean, to each his own chapeau, but my sartorial predilections lean towards other parts of the collection — that are no less frivolous, mind you! For instance, I would wear the sh-t out of their Mermaid Cat Babushka Coat Sculpture, in pink please. I mean, what’s not to love? Again, it’s a mermaid cat babushka (a very underrepresented demographic) sewn onto a fashionable coat. It has everything! Unfortunately, the price tag is out of my budget: €13,500, or about $14,000. Even in their more “regular” pieces, the vampiric touches are done with whimsy, much less literal than the headpiece. But there’s no question that Jaden trotted out this topper for the right venue. I just hope for the sake of the people sitting behind him, that he opened the castle’s windows during the show.

Lady Gaga debuts new song & video for Abracadabra during the Grammys commercials

We are 31 days out (but who’s counting) from Lady Gaga unleashing Mayhem on us, the album formerly known as LG7. Though it hasn’t even been released yet, Mayhem is already a Grammy winner! Gaga picked up her 13th Grammy on Sunday, winning alongside Bruno Mars in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for their hit “Die With a Smile.” And anyone who’s already pre-ordered Mayhem (that’s me, hi, I’m anyone) knows that “Die With a Smile” is the final track on the album. True to her promise in Elle magazine, Gaga used her acceptance speech to have the LGBTQ community’s back, compassionately sending love to trans people and reminding them that they “are not invisible.” And then Mother Monster had one more surprise in store for us: she debuted a new song and music video, “Abracadabra,” during a commercial break in the middle of the award show. I think it’s safe to say that Mayhem has begun!

The surprise song aired during a commercial break rather than in an official Grammys slot, but opened with a nod to the awards show. “The category is dance… or die,” Gaga announced sinisterly.

“Abracadabra” is a fast-tempo dance track, reminiscent of Gaga’s innovative dark pop hits from the aughts and early 2010s.

The track swiftly made waves on social media, with fans already calling it the “song of the decade.”

“lady gaga weird again??? REAL POP MUSIC IS BACK,” one fan posted on X. “this is the best Lady Gaga single on first listen since G.U.Y,” wrote another, referencing the “ARTPOP” single released in 2013.

A press release described the video as portraying “a dance battle between the light and dark sides of Gaga.” Utilizing color and sharp dance choreography, Gaga and her dancers create an energetic swarm of white, though Gaga occasionally appears in crimson red — a lyrical reference to the “lady in red.” The visual aesthetic darkens two and a half minutes in, with Gaga adorning another crimson outfit and her dancers swapping strappy white outfits for full-length black robes and canes.

The video was co-directed by Lady Gaga, Paris Goebel and Bethany Vargas. Gaga and Goebel worked together on the choreography for a team of 40 dancers, and Peri Rosenzweig and Nick Royal tackled the styling and costuming, including what the official announcement described as “an upcycled white cape crafted from vintage wedding dresses.”

“Abracadabra” is the third single from the forthcoming 14-track album, “Mayhem,” which will be released on March 7.

Gaga and collaborator Bruno Mars took home a Grammy for best pop duo with the album’s leading single, “Die With A Smile,” which was released last August. On stage, Gaga took the opportunity to show her solidarity with the LGBTQ community.

“Trans people are not invisible,” she said. “Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up.”

In a press announcement last week, Gaga said the album represents her “reassembling a shattered mirror” and is a return to “the pop music my earliest fans loved.”

“Even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way,” she said.

[From USA Today]

Ok, I know I’m the one always yapping about the imagery of Gaga’s lyrics being so vivid and poetic in her early albums (and being disappointed in a bit of a drop off in more recent works). But I am not being facetious or sarcastic in any way when I declare that I am all in for this song’s chorus: “Abracadabra, amor-ooh-na-na/ Abracadabra, morta-ooh-ga-ga/ Abracadabra, abra-ooh-na-na/ In her tongue she said, ‘Death or love tonight.’” It’s giving me “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” through the lens of Gaga! And I’m equally high on the video, which to me harkens back to parts of the “Born This Way” video. Something about Gaga barefoot, surrounded by hordes of professional dancers in a studio, interpretive-movementing her beating-with-bricks-and-strings heart out, strikes me as the most wholly authentic version of Gaga. The tableau feels like a primordially jubilant shared ritual of similarly spiritually jazzed individuals coming together to revel in their huge emotions which basically all bottle down to “I’m ALIVE and this music and dance are the only way to express the bigness of it all!!!” Or, you know, something like that.

My only question is: what color is “Abracadabra?”

Chappell Roan Gracie Abrams Grammys Kacey Musgraves Lady Gaga Sabrina Carpenter

Chappell Roan wore vintage Gaultier & picked up the Best New Artist Grammy

I enjoyed some of the performances at last night’s Grammys, but you could tell that some of those people are not real-deal live performers. That wasn’t the case with Chappell Roan, who did a very good live performance of “Pink Pony Club.” Chappell also picked up the coveted Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The Grammys continue to give BNA to artists who have been around for several years, but whatever. I actually thought BNA would go to Sabrina Carpenter and I hoped it would go to Shaboozey, but here we go. For the red carpet, Chappell wore a 2003 Jean Paul Gaultier piece which… it’s fine. It’s her thing, to be this camp.

Sabrina Carpenter got a lot of attention for her campy vibe too – she wore a custom Jonathan Anderson gown in ice blue, with some very big Chopard diamonds. I thought her look was meh and so was her performance. She did win a Grammy though – Best Pop Vocal Album. Sure.

It definitely looks like Lady Gaga’s latest incarnation is Darth Gaga, or Goth Gaga. I’m here for it! Her red carpet look was Samuel Lewis.

Kacey Musgraves wore Ralph Lauren – she’s so pretty, and there were some cutaways to her when Beyonce won her Grammys – Kacey seemed pretty happy for Bey.

I have yet to form an opinion on Gracie Abrams, but I know she’s being pushed really hard as the next big thing. Is any of this organic? She wore Chanel last night – I wish the dress was longer.

Beyonce finally won her first Album of the Year Grammy for ‘Cowboy Carter’

Beyonce finally did it! Or should I say, the Recording Academy finally did it, they finally gave Beyonce an Album of the Year Grammy. This was Beyonce’s first-ever AOTY – she didn’t win an AOTY Grammy for Lemonade or the self-titled album or Renaissance act i. It’s slightly insane that she won it for Cowboy Carter, her “country album,” but here we are. Beyonce not only picked up AOTY, she also won the Grammy for Best Country Album. Beyonce is now the most nominated and awarded artist in Grammy history.

In case you’re wondering about Bey’s Grammy look, it was a custom piece by Schiaparelli. It didn’t fit her correctly, and she was adjusting it throughout the night. We rarely see Beyonce have any kind of wardrobe malfunction, but the way she kept f–king with the bust of the dress, she was nervous that one of the girls would pop out. That’s poorly done by Schiaparelli. The one nice thing I’ll say is that the dress did have a sparkly country-and-western theme.

By picking up her first AOTY, Beyonce became the first Black woman to win in the top category in the 21st century. The last Black woman to win AOTY was Lauryn Hill. Beyonce now joins Hill, Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston as the only Black women to win AOTY. I’m including her acceptance speeches below – her reaction to winning Best Country Album is already a meme, as is Blue Ivy motioning to her mama to get up and accept the award.

Fashion Grammys Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift wore Vivienne Westwood & went home empty-handed at the Grammys

Taylor Swift had a nice vibe at the Grammys last night. Travis Kelce did not attend as her date, he’s still preparing for the Super Bowl (this coming weekend), so Taylor was just there to rep her album, The Tortured Poets Department and its six Grammy nominations. She was also there to hang out with friends and, as it turns out, cheer for two of her favorite people in music: Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar. Taylor ended up losing in all six categories in which she was nominated, but she presented Beyonce with the Best Country Album Grammy and she shared a toast with Jay-Z when Beyonce won Album of the Year. Swift was also super-happy for Kendrick when he won Record of the Year for “Not Like Us.”

Throughout the night – she made zero costume changes – Taylor wore a fire-red Vivienne Westwood corseted minidress. It was flattering and pretty, and a little bit sexy. I’ve made my peace with the fact that she’s not a huge risk-taker when it comes to fashion, and this feels entirely in her comfort zone. My one complaint is that it’s a bit ice-skater-chic, but again, that’s Taylor. She loves that “ice dancer princess” look. One sexy element was a delicate chain on her thigh with a charm with the initial “T”- for Taylor or for Travis.

Are the Swifties mad that Taylor didn’t win another AOTY? I hope not – I think if she had lost to someone other than Beyonce, they might feel some kind of way about it, but given Taylor’s clear happiness for her friend, I hope the truce between fandoms holds. Yes, another AOTY win would have been historic, but it was also a historic snub that Beyonce hadn’t won an AOTY Grammy before last night.

Kendrick Lamar wore a Canadian tuxedo as he picked up five Grammys for ‘Not Like Us’

Before the Grammys broadcast even started, Kendrick Lamar was picking up Grammy Awards. He wasn’t even in the audience at that point, so DJ Mustard accepted the Grammys for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video. Kendrick was there to accept Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Keep in mind, ALL of these Grammys were for “Not Like Us,” arguably the most significant diss song of all time. Kendrick released his album, GNX, past this year’s Grammy cut-off date, so the Grammy Awards just decided to give him five awards for calling Drake a PDFile.

The best part was when Kendrick accepted the Grammy for ROTY for “Not Like Us.” That man wore a CANADIAN Tuxedo, all denim. The entire audience stood and cheered for him and several huge stars could be seen rapping along and/or dancing as “Not Like Us” played. That’s got to hurt for Drake – the entire Grammy audience singing along to “A Minnnnnor.” Kendrick also dedicated his ROTY to Los Angeles, and he shouted out neighorhoods and areas affected by the Southern California wildfires. He also showed a lot of respect to Diana Ross for SOTY. Next Sunday, he’s got the Super Bowl Halftime show!

Bianca Censori Grammys Kanye West

Kanye West & Bianca Censori were not ‘escorted out’ of the Grammys, they just left

Ever since Kanye West married Bianca Censori, he’s made/encouraged her to wander around the world in little more than a pair of pantyhose. It’s been a thing for a while now – Bianca is constantly being photographed with her various bits and pieces out and on display. Some have theorized that Kanye is sending a message to Kim Kardashian, the message being “I have a new Real Doll now,” I think. But I think the larger message is that Bianca has a cult-like devotion to Kanye and this whole thing is toxic as hell.

Anyway, Kanye and Bianca walked the Grammys red carpet last night. They arrived early-ish on the carpet, with Bianca wearing a fur coat at first. Then she dramatically removed her coat and posed in a bodystocking which left nothing to the imagination, all while Kanye stood there fully clothed. They posed like that for a while, and then there was some confusion about what happened next. At first, Entertainment Tonight reported that Grammy organizers escorted Kanye and Bianca off the carpet and kicked them out of the show because they weren’t even invited. But Variety’s Grammy source insisted that Kanye and Bianca were not thrown out or escorted out, that Kanye simply “walked the carpet, got in his car and left.” TMZ also had this:

Kanye West and Bianca Censori made quite the splash on the Grammys red carpet … and while several reports claim their antics got them booted, TMZ has learned that’s not the case.

A source close to the Recording Academy tells TMZ … Kanye was an invited guest — nominated for Best Rap Song this year — and he wasn’t forcibly removed from the event.

We’re told he walked the red carpet, got in his car of his own volition and then left … police and Grammys security never got involved. We reached out to police just to see if they ever got a call about the incident BTW … and our law enforcement sources say no one ever complained about Censori’s revealing ensemble.

[From TMZ]

Oh, so he was invited? That’s surprising, and I didn’t realize that he was nominated as well. That explains the red carpet stunt. I guess Kanye didn’t want to stick around and pull focus with his wife – even with the Grammy nomination, Kanye is still very canceled to a lot of people in that room.
