Tom Hiddleston: Ben Cumberbatch ‘is one of my best friends, it’s that simple’

I am about to cause a disturbance in the Dragonfly Force: I don’t think Tom Hiddleston ever looks good with dark hair. Ever. He looks his best when he’s close to his natural hair color (a strawberry blonde) with some scruff or a goatee. Otherwise, Tommy just looks creepy. I’m including a few more photos of Tommy this week on the set of Crimson Peak in Toronto (we had some pics yesterday too).

These days, I try to spread the Hiddles out because there hasn’t been a lot of news, but you’re getting Tommy posts two days in a row. You are welcome, Dragonflies. The reason I’m writing about him again? A new interview with the Toronto Star to promote Only Lovers Left Alive! This is the very first line of the piece: “Sitting in a hotel room listening to British actor Tom Hiddleston recite Hamlet is not a bad way to start a day.” Tommy never changes. Some highlights from the piece:

What influenced Tom’s vampire Adam in OLLA: “It’s interesting and I have thought about (Bowie) but I also thought about Syd Barrett, too,” said Hiddleston of the late co-founder of Pink Floyd, whose musical genius was marred by mental illness and addiction. “Syd was a nice reference for us visually and also Mick Jagger in (the 1970 drama) Performance where he’s playing a Bohemian living in a dilapidated house. We talked about Hamlet as well.”

Tommy always brings it around to Shakespeare: Hiddleston said he was inspired by his character’s “sad disillusioned spirit” to reread Hamlet — also taking a cue from a character in the script — and found “so many of these lines could have been said by Adam,” before quoting several of the Danish prince’s speeches.

He doesn’t feel like OLLA really is a vampire movie: “It felt like we were making a love story between two quite sophisticated creatures who happen to be vampires. It is a wonderful prism from which to explore immortality.”

Vampires take the long view: “For Adam, immortality has become a burden and he’s become depressed with the direction of human activity, an age which has a great fear of imagination. Eve can say ‘we’ve lived through worse.’ She’s got the long view.”

Dancing with Tilda Swinton: “That was a very special day, a first coming-together with Tilda and as a sequence, it speaks volumes but wordlessly.”

Taking the part in Crimson Peak after Benedict Cumberbatch dropped out: “He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that,” Hiddleston said of Cumberbatch. They met in 2010, playing officers in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.

Doing a good horror film: “It’s a great script and I’ve been a fan of Guillermo del Toro forever. I think he’s amazing. He’s made no secret this is an English-language film that’s very close to the sensibility of his Spanish-language films. I’ve always wanted to make a good horror film and there’s no one at the moment in the world of Guillermo’s equal.”

We could literally spend DAYS and weeks parsing this: “He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that.” Tommy has a BFF!!!! And it’s Benedict Cumberbatch! Benedict is his big brother. Tommy needs a father figure and Benny is it. Do they go over to each other’s houses? Do they party together? Or do they just do sleepovers and talk about their dream girls whilst braiding each other’s hair? Dear Hollywood: make THAT movie. Two Englishmen BFFs who hang out together, get drunk and play with each other’s hair. It would make billions of dollars.
