‘Batman v. Superman’ opens with $424 million worldwide: sad or awesome?

FFN_TIS_BatmanVSuperman_032016_52000662

DC Comics apologists aside, most critics and audience members thought Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was a terrible movie. But that didn’t stop anyone and everyone from going to see it on Easter weekend. On Friday, the film was already been tracked for a $180 million opening weekend domestically, and by Sunday, it had pretty much met that, opening with $170.1 million domestic, and $424 million worldwide.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice shattered box office records, opening to an estimated $170.1 million domestically over Easter weekend. Not only did Zack Snyder’s superhero epic set a new record for the all-time biggest March opening, obliterating The Hunger Games’ $152.5 million, but Batman v Superman now stands as the sixth biggest opening of all time. It also squeaked by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($169.2 million) to earn Warner Bros.’ biggest opening ever.

Internationally, it added another $254 million for a worldwide total of $424 million — the fourth-biggest global opening of all time. Domestically, Batman v Superman didn’t manage to surpass its Marvel counterparts like The Avengers or Iron Man 3, but it did beat both globally, becoming only the fourth movie in history to cross $400 million worldwide in one weekend.

Ben Affleck’s Batman also dethroned Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) as the biggest Batman and DC Comics openings ever.

Batman v Superman’s runaway success spells good news for Warner Bros. after a lackluster 2015, and the studio had several pricy flops last year, including Jupiter Ascending, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and Pan.

[From EW]

Well… good for Warner Bros… I guess. The good news is that there won’t be mass layoffs at Warner Bros because everyone over there decided to spend money like drunken sailors on shore leave. The bad news is that some people will start to believe that this (unsustainable) business model has legs. And while it shows that the Batman and Superman names are enough to get people in seats, that doesn’t mean that the film will stand the test of time, you know? But it does show that people are excited for the Wonder Woman movie, and that the Justice League movie is going to continue happening unabated. The next big test for this core audience of teen and 20-something men who love dark-as-hell superheroes and sh-tty scripts? The Suicide Squad, which comes out in August. Sad Batfleck is in that too.

Liam Hemsworth: My brother Chris quietly paid off all of our parents’ debts

hemsworth2

You guys know that I think Liam Hemsworth is the more attractive Hemsworth brother, right? I’ve said that before. But in this family portrait, you can see that the Hemsworth boys came from good stock – Liam and Chris both posted some photos of themselves with their mom and dad recently. What strikes me is that the Hemsworth parents look pretty young to have three adult sons and several grandchildren. It also strikes me that this family is really close. So close, in fact, that Chris went and paid off all of his parents’ debts. Liam told the story to The Independent:

There are countless examples of actors breaking into Hollywood thanks to from wealthy backgrounds and/or valuable connections. Sadly there are fewer stories about those who came from more financially challenged families.

hemsworth1

Liam Hemsworth and his brother Chris are two actors who succeeded in Hollywood without a financial cushion to fall back on should their attempts at building an acting career have fallen flat. The Hemsworth brothers have both built successful careers in films such as The Hunger Games and Thor franchises, amassing a combined fortune worth millions. The money these roles have brought them will have changed many aspects of their life and the life lived by their mother, a teacher, and their father, a social services counsellor.

Liam told The Independent he still feels moved to tears when he recalls Chris, who earned a reported $32 million in 2014, calling their father in Melbourne, Australia, and asking him to check his bank account.

“He [his father] called my brother Chris back and said: ‘I don’t know how to feel. Since I left home I have had debts and I thought I’d be paying them off until I died and have this weight hanging over me, and now to have them completely cleared.’

“They are so happy now and able to spend more time with us, I would love to be able to do something for my parents like that.”

That made me tear up too! Of course, how much debt did Ma & Pa Hemsworth have, realistically? I would guess that it probably wasn’t all that much, especially in relation to Chris’s paychecks these days. It’s cool that Chris did it with little drama too, I guess he just quietly paid off everything or he just dropped several million dollars into his parents’ account and let them write their own checks. As for Liam wanting to do something for his parents too… maybe he could buy his parents a nice beach house!

Here are some photos of Chris, “the favorite son,” at the Mexican premiere of In the Heart of the Sea last week.

Sony Hack: Jennifer Lawrence was paid less than her male ‘Hustle’ co-stars

Jennifer Lawrence

Kaiser covered the embarrassing Sony Hack news for much of the past week. This scandal isn’t even close to finished, and it’s making for some very revealing gossip. Many new details have surfaced about Jennifer Lawrence in leaked emails. To summarize: (1) Her email handle (as Lorde recently hinted) contains the word “peanutbutt”; (2) JLaw and Amy Adams were compensated less than Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper in American Hustle; (3) Makers of the Cleopatra biopic considered replacing Angelina Jolie with JLaw. What?

The first detail isn’t surprising. The second is maddening because (as these emails freely admit) JLaw was the biggest name in the Hustle cast. Jennifer was paid less than her male co-stars because she’s a woman. The third detail confuses me. Can you see JLaw playing Cleopatra? Let’s jump into this cluster:

Email correspondences from the Sony hack reveal that Jennifer Lawrence was compensated less than her male co-stars, compounding the studio’s gender pay gap problems.

One of the most prominent A-list presences in the emails ripped from Sony’s servers by the hacking collective Guardians of Peace is none other than Jennifer Lawrence (who is, sadly, no stranger to hacking herself).

Lawrence and her fabulous email handle (peanutbutt) make several cameos in the leak, including numerous pleasant exchanges with Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, over her dazzling turn in American Hustle, which was co-financed by Sony arm Columbia Pictures. There’s also an interesting email exchange between Pascal and Brian Helgeland, screenwriter of the planned Cleopatra biopic, with Pascal suggesting that Helgeland dump Angelina Jolie in favor of Lawrence–an idea Helgeland says he’s given some thought to.

[T]he most troubling reveal concerning Lawrence is in regard to her financial compensation with hacked emails revealing that the Hunger Games star was compensated less than her male co-stars on American Hustle.

In an email dated December 5, 2013, Andrew Gumpert, President of Business Affairs and Administration for Columbia Pictures, wrote to Pascal and Doug Belgrad, President of SPE Motion Picture Group, about the “points”–or back-end compensation–that each actor was to receive on Hustle. (“Megan” is Megan Ellison, head of Annapurna Pictures, which co-financed Hustle.)

“Got a steve warren/gretchen rush call that it’s unfair the male actors get 9% in the pool and jennifer is only at 7pts,” the email reads. “You may recall Jennifer was at 5 (amy was and is at 7) and WE anted in 2 extra points for Jennifer to get her up to 7. If anyone needs to top jennifer up it’s megan. BUT I think amy and Jennifer are tied so upping JL, ups AA.”

Gumpert added, “The current talent deals are: O’Russell: 9%; Cooper: 9%; Bale: 9%; Renner: 9%; Lawrence: 7%; Adams: 7%.”

Pascal’s email response to the news of Lawrence making less than her male colleagues–despite the fact that she’s far and away the biggest star of the picture, since Hustle was green-lit after The Hunger Games–was: “there is truth here.”

[From The Daily Beast]

The Beast goes on to reveal how the gender disparity of these A-lister salaries is reflective of Sony staffers in general. One example: the two co-presidents (one male, one female) of production at Columbia Pictures do the same exact job. The man rakes in $2.4 million salary; the female draws $1.5 million in comparison. And so on down the corporate ladder.

There’s one last JLaw detail (so far) from the Sony hack. Amy Pascal and director/producer Ivan Reitman sent several back and forth emails about casting the all-female Ghostbusters III. Jennifer’s name popped up on the list, along with Emma Stone, Melissa McCarthy, and Lizzy Caplan. Oh, rly?

Reese Witherspoon doesn’t want to be ‘likeable’ anymore: are you feeling it?

FFN_Witherspoon_Reese_STOIA_103014_51571668

Are you tired of the Rah Rah Feminism jag that every actress has been on lately? I don’t mind it, honestly. I’d much rather cover actresses talking about feminism than, say, what they eat or how they parent or how they were terribly uncool in their teen years. And while I find American Citizen ™ Reese Witherspoon pretty unlikeable these days, I’ll admit that she has some interesting things to say from inside the Hollywood Machine. Reese is campaigning for that Oscar, hoping that she somehow gets a second Best Actress Oscar for her work in Wild. That seems to be where she’s positioning herself these days. Hilariously, the press surrounding her Oscar campaign is mirroring Matthew McConaughey’s campaign last year – everybody has noticed it, and Reese is even using the same kind of McConaughey-esque language of “I made a conscious effort to redirect.” Reese mixes it with a dash of feminism and voila! Oscar campaign! Here are some highlights from Reese’s New York Times interview:

Why she “redirected” her career a few years ago: “Other than one studio, literally one, nobody was developing anything with a female lead. It just hit me like a ton of bricks. And I was so mad. And then I thought: ‘Why am I so upset about this? Why don’t I do something about it?’ ”

The perils of being a likeable America’s Sweetheart: “I’ve sat through millions of development meetings where people are like: ‘We don’t want Reese to say profanity. We don’t want her to have sex. We don’t want her to take drugs.’ I didn’t really feel the constraints of it until about three years ago, where I realized, ‘I’m not this.’ I’m a complex person that has so many different aspects in my personality. But somehow, I have this reductive experience where I’m put into this tiny little box. Likable. Can we scrub the likable box? And what is likable? To me, likable is human, and real, and honest. To me, I find the character in ‘Wild’ much more likable than a lot of characters I’ve played in comedy. She’s telling the truth. She’s not ashamed of the sexual experiences she’s had. She’s not ashamed of her drug use.”

Her 15-year-old daughter Ava: “It’s interesting to see how men look at her now. And what kind of women is she looking at in film? Who are her heroes?” Beyond some of Jennifer Lawrence’s characters, in the “The Hunger Games” and “Silver Linings Playbook,” Ms. Witherspoon said, “It’s pretty thin.”

On her performance in Wild: “I said to my producing partner, ‘If we can pull this off, this’ll be the first movie, I believe, I can’t recall, but that stars a woman that at the very end has no money, no man, no parents, no job, no opportunities, and it’s a happy ending.’ How important, how needing of that, are we? How late to the party are we?”

Feminism: “We save ourselves. Every woman knows it. Every man knows it. You look up. Nobody’s coming to the rescue. It’s a universal story. But it’s revolutionary in the way that a woman is allowed to tell it.”

[From The NY Times]

I’m fine with the message, but I do find the messenger questionable. The thing is… being “likeable” is a gilded cage, I get that. But for women like Reese, like Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Garner and Sandra Bullock and many more, likeability is extremely lucrative. It’s how many actresses build their resumes and their bank accounts. Likeability and relatability are two of the most powerful tools for celebrity women. But, as I said, likeability is a gilded cage. Many of those “sweethearts” have tried to break out and get dirty (Reese even got arrested after bitching out a cop), and very few people are buying it. So, after so many years of being told that Reese is likeable, that she’s a sweetheart, that she’s just a down-home Southern girl and she could be your best friend… now Reese is turning her back on that image. All to save her career and possibly get another Oscar nomination. What do you think?

Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Martin have been quietly dating since late June

Jennifer Lawrence

Believe it or not, this is a photo of Jennifer Lawrence leaving a Coldplay afterparty on July 1. I didn’t think anything of these pictures when they surfaced. Lots of celebrities like bad music, you know? It turns out that JLaw wasn’t only there for the music. Here’s where it gets interesting. She and Nicholas Hoult officially split again in late July. Theories for the split included JLaw’s “exploded ego” and conflicting schedules. The Independent said the split really happened a few months ago. The timeline is a bit iffy.

After the breakup, Nick jumped into filming Equals with Kristen Stewart. They talked about their chemistry at a Tokyo press conference. Nick and KStew went out for sushi and may have gone for piercings together. Everyone (including me) assumed that Nick and JLaw would eventually get back together. Maybe not.

E! reports that JLaw has been seeing Chris Martin since late June. I’m not surprised to see Chris dating. Gwyneth Paltrow has clearly moved on with a jumpoff. Am I surprised that Jennifer and Chris are now a thing? Hell yes:

Super-hot (and seemingly unlikely) couple alert!

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Martin are seeing each other, multiple sources confirm to E! News. We’re told that the pair has been spending quality together since late June after the Oscar winner split with her X-Men costar Nicholas Hoult.

The Coldplay frontman and ex Gwyneth Paltrow announced their separation after more than 10 years of marriage in March. Since the breakup, the exes have remained more than amicable and were even still living together at their Brentwood home in June.

Meanwhile, E! News exclusively reported in August that Lawrence called it quits with Hoult earlier this summer, with a source telling us that the breakup was “very amicable,” adding that their successful careers made it difficult to find time for their relationship. “They spent a lot of time apart because of work, and it was difficult on their relationship,” the insider said.

The Silver Linings Playbook star was photographed for the first time since the split last week in NYC, where she was snapped arriving at an airport while flashing her toned tummy in a white crop top.

“I’m a big fan of all things British,” the Hunger Games actress said in an interview with The Sun back in January. “I get to spend some time there now and again and I like that I can go for fish and chips wearing the most awful outfit and it’s cool, you know?”

Presumably, Martin is now part of that equation.

[From E! Online]

Honestly, I am in shock. We heard reports that Chris and Alexa Chung had cooled off. The Star story about Jennifer and Bradley Cooper getting flirty was obviously not true. I figured JLaw would start dating someone soon, but Chris Martin? Did not see that coming. She does like Brit boys although she could do better than Chris. If they’re enjoying themselves, why not? You know, Goop and JLaw are polar opposites. Chris probably enjoys being with someone who enjoys the little things (farts) instead of “curating” snobbery.

Us Weekly adds to the story. Jennifer recently attended the NYC Coldplay concert. Chris made a Hunger Games reference onstage and blew a kiss towards the VIP area where JLaw was seated. God, this is so weird.

Here’s a photo of Chris at the same afterparty as JLaw. Does he look victorious?

Jennifer Lawrence: “It should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV”

Jennifer Lawrence: It should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV | jennifer lawrence

From ABC News:

Jennifer Lawrence said “it should be illegal” to call someone fat and, in an interview with Barbara Walters, railed against people who bash the way women look.

“Because why is humiliating people funny?” the 23-year-old Oscar winner told Walters in an interview for the upcoming ABC News special, “Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013.”

“I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV.”

Lawrence became Hollywood’s new “It” girl after she was picked to play Katniss Everdeen, the heroine in the film adaptations of the Hunger Games series. It’s a role that launched Lawrence to mega-stardom. Since stepping into the spotlight, Lawrence has been criticized for her figure, considered full by Hollywood standards, and it makes her furious.

“I get it, and, and I do it too, we all do it,” she told Walters. “[But] the media needs to take responsibility for the effect that it has on our younger generation, on these girls who are watching these television shows, and picking up how to talk and how to be cool.

“I mean, if we’re regulating cigarettes and sex and cuss words, because of the effect they have on our younger generation, why aren’t we regulating things like calling people fat?” she said.

Jennifer Lawrence talks about sh-tting her pants on Letterman: gross or adorable?

Jennifer Lawrence

There’s something going on with Jennifer Lawrence, and I have a bad feeling about it. First let’s do some red carpet stuff because last night was the NYC premiere of Catching Fire. After getting cheeky in LA and sidebooby in Paris, Jennifer decided to let us all down by wearing this Dior monstrosity. Honestly? This dress looks like something I saw at Target the other day. It’s awful. I have no idea why Dior ruined a basic black dress by shoving a pink-and-green sports bra into the v-neck. How unflattering. JLaw’s stylist should be raked over the coals for putting her in this dress at all — let alone for the last premiere of the tour. With that said, Jennifer’s hair and makeup look quite pretty.

Jennifer Lawrence

JLaw will move past this style nightmare, I have no doubt. Now for the real weirdness. A few days ago, Jennifer skipped the LA afterparty due to illness. She was really, really sick! A few months ago, we heard an Enquirer story that said Jen was feeling overworked and headed for a nervous breakdown. Earlier this week we also discussed her history with social anxiety although many of you called bullsh-t.

Yesterday afternoon JLaw paid a visit to David Letterman before the premiere, and she breathlessly told a story of her hospital visit on Wednesday. She’s having health problems, and she’s putting on a brave face. Expletives and all:

“I just had this really bad pain for, like, three weeks. And you know you can only sh-t your pants so many times a day before you go to the emergency room, before you’re like ‘I need to go to the hospital.’ I thought I had an ulcer, but it turns out it was a ‘fulcer.’ I went to the emergency room. I just did this thing yesterday called an endoscopo-something, where they put you to sleep. And the woman – it’s pretty clear when you first meet me, I’m a freakin’ head case and I’m crazy – so I’m in there like, ‘Ugh, what are these?! What do they mean?! What does that say?!’ The last thing I said was, ‘I’m paralyzed!’ I dreamed there was a nuclear bomb that went off…And the first lucid conversation I remember having was about the Kardashians!”

[From David Letterman on CBS]

I hope she’s okay. This certainly sounds like a stress-related ulcer, but her doctors will figure out the true source of her pain. Girl needs some time off soon, but I doubt she’ll get it with Oscar season coming.

Let’s do the rest of the NYC Catching Fire fashion, shall we?

Elizabeth Banks wins the red carpet again. Liz wore a very alluring Jenny Packham bustier top and pants. The embellished details are what make this outfit pop along with Elizabeth’s come hither attitude, coral lip pop, and an almost complete lack of accessories. The whole picture is just perfect. Whoever is styling Elizabeth needs to style JLaw for the next tour.

Elizabeth Banks

Jena Malone wore a white-and-grey Valentino dress. I actually love this dress on her. The fit is a little sweet and cloying but overall very charming and suits Jena’s looks and figure. Her smoky cat eye makeup lends a little adventure, and her (fried) hair looks great in an updo.

Jena Malone

Meta Golding looked fantastic again. I don’t have an ID on this dress.

Meta Golding

Stanley Tucci brought his gorgeous wife to the event. Lucky bitch.

Stanley Tucci

I don’t know what to do with Sam Claflin. He’s very velvety, but those pants look almost like jeans.

Sam Claflin

Helena Christensen showed up and looked like a dream. She gets better with age, right?

Helena Christensen

I’m surprised to see Chrissy Teigen on the red carpet after she tweeted, “I just ate beef jerky to cleanse my mouth of my stale breath. I am at home and have access to a toothbrush and toothpaste.” She kills me.

Chrissy Teigen

COMMON.

The Canadian premiere of Catching Fire was definitely an afterthought. Producers sent Sam and Jena to Toronto on Tuesday evening and called it a day. Jena wore a Dora Abodi midi dress, and Sam was scarfy and hip to be square.
