Duchess Kate in blue Roland Mouret at the SportsAid gala: lovely or boring?

I happened to be on Twitter as the @KensingtonRoyal account was live-tweeting the Duchess of Cambridge’s “arrival” at the SportsAid event last night. What was absolutely hilarious to me was that Kate’s official Twitter was making such a big deal about her “arrival”… at Kensington Palace. Literally, she “arrived” at her home. She walked outside to what is basically her backyard. This was also Kate’s first work event since she and William attended the Queen’s garden party on May 24th. Because she’s so keen to work, you guys! At least Kate gave us a new gown to examine, which is nice. I was getting tired of the repeats, mostly because she was repeating some of the worst pieces in her closet and styling those looks in the same old way. Her gown for this SportsAid reception was by Roland Mouret. She’s worn Mouret’s gowns before, to decent results. I like this gown for the most part. I have an issue with the bust though. Mouret is known for beautiful structure, and many of his gowns have an almost origami-like feel which needs proper tailoring. So is it the tailoring that’s off, or does Kate need a different bra? Am I the only one seeing that? The reception also involved a dinner (of beef, asparagus and pudding) and a speech by Kate, the video of which will probably be hidden away in some vault with all of Kate’s extra wiglets. Kensington Palace only released a transcript. Here is the speech in full: Good evening ladies and gentlemen. It is an absolute pleasure to be here with you to celebrate SportsAid’s 40th anniversary. Some of you may know that I love sport. I love cheering on teams and athletes that I am passionate about. I love the physical challenge sport presents and the mental strength it gives us all. And I love the way it so often brings people together to work as part of a team. I suspect many of you in this room may feel the same. The brilliance of SportsAid is in really understanding just how much athletic competition gives to our country as a whole. By investing in young sporting talent, they ensure that there is a strong pipeline of inspirational heroes. These athletes then serve as motivators to everyone in the UK to get involved, get active, and embrace the power of sport to make us happier and healthier. With little over 50 days to go until the Games begin in Rio; the next Olympiad is almost here. As we did in London in 2012, we will see a new generation of sporting stars emerge into the spotlight. We cannot wait to meet the next SportsAid champions – the next Chris Hoys and Katherine Graingers who will remind us all of the magic and the power of sport. So thank you all for supporting the incredible work of SportsAid. I am immensely proud to be their Patron and I can’t wait to cheer on our team competing in Rio. I do hope you enjoy tonight’s very special occasion. Thank you. [From Royal.uk] I was going to write some republican diatribe, but I’ll save it for another day. This is your future queen, Great Britain. I hope you can picture the hair tosses when you read the words “I love cheering on teams and athletes that I am passionate about.” People Magazine also had a lengthy write-up about this event, complete with sugary quotes from some of the people in attendance about how wonderful it is that Kate is so “curious about sport” and how amazing it was that she asked the young athletes if they were nervous. The CEO of SportsAid also made sure to mention that Kate is very “keen.” Yes, very keen. Photos courtesy of Pacific Coast News.

Elizabeth Olsen let her sisters dress her up like a goth ghost for the CFDAs

The CFDAs were held last night in New York. I generally find the CFDAs kind of boring, fashion-wise. It’s not the Met Gala and it’s not the Oscars. Some ladies try to do something different, but most people just look vaguely nice and not particularly noteworthy. Take the Olsen sisters – we’ve seen Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen look like Victorian ghosts a million times before. The only difference is that at the CFDAs, they dressed their little sister Elizabeth in The Row and now she looks like a Victorian ghost now too. More photos… Stephanie Sokolinski (Soko!!) looking tired in Gucci. It really is about styling with this woman, and I really, really want to take away her pink-brown eye makeup. The dress is fine (and it suits her) but I think she would look better with different hair and makeup. Adriana Lima in Marc Jacobs. I like that she wore pants. This outfit is nice. Riley Keough in Proenza Schouler. I’m actually not a fan of Proenza Schouler, I think the clothes usually look overworked and fashion-student-y. But this was one of my favorite dresses at the event. Jessica Chastain in Prabal Gurung. Love the dress, hate the styling. Chastain was doing so well, and I really thought she had gotten some better hair and makeup people. But maybe not. Because she should never, ever do her hair like this. Jennifer Hudson in Prabal Gurung. Pretty dress, but it feels too big and heavy for this event. I also don’t like how she matched her lipstick to the dress exactly. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Who had the best dress & jewels at the Tiffany Blue Book Ball in NYC?

Here are some photos from Friday night’s Tiffany Blue Book Ball in NYC. Four major actresses/celebrities came out for the event, and considering they were all DRIPPING in fabulous jewels, I totally believe that Tiffany’s paid them all to be there, looking fabulous and wearing certain high-end pieces. Those ladies? Jessica Biel, Diane Kruger, Reese Witherspoon and Naomi Watts. I’m trying to include some close-ups of the jewels too. First up, here’s Jessica Biel in The Row. I’m starting with the worst, just FYI. While Mary-Kate and Ashley’s The Row is a well-respected line, I always struggle to understand why anyone thinks this looks good? This dress looks so cheap and basic. Biel doesn’t help the underwhelming dress either, she was aiming for less-is-more and she just looked like she was in desperate need of lipstick and a hairstylist. Diane Kruger knows how to stand out. This Kaufmanfranco look would have looked ridiculous on another woman, but Diane is killing it. Also, Diane got the BEST necklace. Diamonds, emeralds, aquamarines, sapphires, possibly some tourmalines? It’s really gorgeous. The silhouette on Reese Witherspoon’s J. Mendel dress is incredibly flattering, but I still don’t really care for the look as a whole. I think the flower applique/beading sort of morphs into something moldy-looking. And I wish Reese had done something else with her hair. Still, the necklace she got to wear? Perfection. CB loves Naomi Watts while I’m sort of meh on Watts and her style. She never looks hideous, but sometimes I do think Watts is stuck in a style rut. This Prada is a good example – I know why Naomi picked it, it’s because she thinks ice-blue looks good with her coloring, and because she likes these frothy, light dresses. But no one on her styling team realized that the ice blue was very similar to the “Tiffany Blue” of the background, which means Naomi looks like she’s blending into the wall. That’s a rookie mistake, IMO. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Jennifer Aniston v. Julia Roberts: who rocked the best ‘business shorts’ suit?

Here are some photos from last night’s LA premiere of Mother’s Day, the latest Garry Marshall-directed holiday monstrosity. In this post, we are going to be discussing Business Shorts/Cocktail Shorts and whether they are ever a good idea. First, let me say – I don’t think Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts meant to both do Business Shorts for the premiere. Meaning, I think if Jennifer knew that Julia was going to do shorts, Jen probably would have gone with a cocktail dress. The fact that they both did Business/Cocktail shorts is amusing to me. Also amusing? Julia and Jennifer didn’t pose together on the red carpet at all. That just shows you Julia’s Alpha-Dog tendencies, just my opinion. We’ll start with Jennifer Aniston, who wore this sort of deconstructed Armani suit which, yes, involves shorts. At first, I just saw the top half and I didn’t care for it, but the whole look is much better. The cut-off on the jacket/shorts is very flattering to her figure and her body looks great. I think her face looks less filler’d and Botoxed too. Now if we could just stop with the hair-in-the-face styling. As for Julia, she wore this shorts-suit from Rag and Bone. While Julia looks nice, I feel like this is millionth time she’s tries to make Business Shorts a thing. And I’m just not feeling it. I get that she has crazy-long legs and she wants to show them off. But why not just do a short cocktail dress? I don’t know, I just feel like this wasn’t her best choice out of all the available options. Additional photos… here’s Jack Whitehall. He’s a British comedian and I mostly know him from his appearances on Graham Norton’s show. And finally, here’s Tracy Anderson, looking like she pulled her hair back to wash her face and somehow just ended up on this red carpet. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.

Charlize Theron in McQueen at the MTV Movie Awards: regal or boring?

Here are some photos of Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain at this weekend’s MTV Movie Awards. Charlize was nominated for some stuff for Mad Max: Fury Road, but I suspect she came to the show mostly because she and Jessica are shilling for The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Charlize wore this Alexander McQueen dress which… it’s okay. Of all the designers doing sheer fabric with applique designs, I think the house of McQueen does it well. My complaint is that it looks like they were trying too many different styling tricks in one dress. From the front, I thought Charlize was doing a very daring high ponytail with a small fishtail braid, but that’s not what’s happening. She did an intricate mini-bun situation which… I sort of like? I like that she tried something new and that she didn’t get five pounds of weave, you know? That being said, it looks like her mini-buns are pulled too tight. As for Chastain… I think she looks lovely. I love that Jessica and Charlize both wore black and they’re giving me Dark Mistress Witch-Queen vibes, which works for their film. Jessica’s gown is Givenchy, and this is the first Givenchy dress I’ve liked in a while. My only complaint is that Jessica’s girls look like they’re suffocating. Photos courtesy of WENN.

Taylor Swift in a YSL jumpsuit at the iHeartRadio Awards: try-hard or cute?

I could post 50 photos of Taylor Swift’s pose-harding at the iHeartRadio Awards last night and each photo would make me laugh. It’s not that her outfit or her styling looked ridiculous, it’s just that she was taking the posing SO seriously. She was posing her ass off on this carpet and it was amazing. She really wanted the photographers to get her Saint Laurent Fall 2016 jumpsuit from every angle, especially the butt shots. As for the Saint Laurent jumpsuit … while Taylor has a great figure, I feel like this is sort of unflattering on her. I would have loved to see her in something else from Saint Laurent, like one of the more menswear-inspired looks. Taylor was joined at the awards show by her BFF Selena Gomez and her (Taylor’s) boyfriend Calvin Harris, also known as Adam Wiles. While Calvin and Tay didn’t walk the carpet together, they did sit together and Taylor did thank him during one of her many trips up to the stage to collect her awards, saying: “For the first time, I had the most amazing person to come home to when the spotlight went out and when the crowds were all gone. So I want to thank my boyfriend Adam for that.” Taylor took home awards for Best Tour, Best Female Artist and Album of the Year. Calvin took home the award for Dance Artist of the Year. Taylor also said something about how this was her last awards show for a while. Sure. She’s probably going to spend the spring and summer planning her wedding!!! Gal Gadot in Balmain at the ‘Batman v Superman’ premiere: budget or cute?

Here are some photos from last night’s giant Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice premiere in NYC. After all of the money spent (well over $400 million-plus), all of the time, all of the effort, all of the extensive reshoots, all of Zack Snyder’s endless lens flares, do you think this movie is even going to be watchable? I don’t even know. What I do know is that the studio is not spreading around extra cash to make sure that their female stars are fashion powerhouses. Gal Gadot wore this Balmain minidress which… I’m really not feeling for the big Gotham premiere, you know? I’m not saying she had to wear a ball gown, but maybe don’t treat this premiere like it’s a Fast & Furious premiere, I guess. Plus, I genuinely don’t like the dress. I think Gal is so pretty, and the styling does nothing for her. Amy Adams wore Tom Ford, in what I kind of assume was a custom-made piece. I like this gown a lot, and it does feel appropriate for the venue, dark and slinky and Gotham-y. I also feel like it’s something Lois Lane would pick out. Right? Incidentally, Amy and Henry Cavill had a really cute interview in this weekend’s Parade Mag about how Superman and Lois are for real, and they’re a real couple with real problems and a real love – go here to read. Amy thinks Superman is into giving footrubs to Lois. Diane Lane… this dress would have been cute at a day-time event, but I’m not feeling it for this premiere. Henry Cavill did not bring his 19-year-old girlfriend to the premiere, which surprises me a little bit. Ben Affleck also seemed to be going stag, and the Batfleck’s face… well… something is going on with him. Yikes. Bonus photo of Holly Hunter, who plays a senator in the film. I would do anything for Holly. I love seeing her. I wish she didn’t have to do stupid comic-book movies. Photos courtesy of WENN, Fame/Flynet.
