Lorde: Social media is one of the things ‘making us sick as a society’

Lorde Vogue

All year, I’ve been halfway expecting Adele or Rihanna to appear on some major magazine cover and suddenly announce that their new album is done and ready to drop. That hasn’t happened… so far. Instead, we’ve got Lorde on the October cover of Vogue. She’s promoting her new album Solar Power, which she announced at the beginning of the summer in a conventional album-announcement kind of way. Lorde is not reinventing the wheel, she is just an offbeat part of the wheel and that’s all fine with her. I like that she’s found a way to be authentic to her outsider roots while still embracing parts of celebrity, and giving herself the space to grow, change and mature from the 16 year old goth youth who seemed uncomfortable with the trappings. You can read the full Vogue piece here. Some highlights:

She’s not built for pop star life: “I’m great at my job, but I’m not sure I’m the man for the job. I’m a highly sensitive person. I’m not built for pop star life. To have a public-facing existence is something I find really intense and is something I’m not good at. That natural charisma is not what I have. I have the brain in the jar.”

Her Melodrama pattern: “California was a Cadillac Escalade. All these beautiful young people drinking all this tequila. Then I’d come home to Auckland for two weeks and have a massive blowout party at my house, and have some romantic entanglement happening that was very compelling and confusing, and then sort of leave in a cloud of smoke and go and write about that, then repeat the process.”

She left social media in 2018: “I could sense that it would be very bad for the work and for me if I stayed online. I don’t think I’ve met too many people for whom social media is a net positive. It’s producing crazy chemicals, forming crazy neural pathways that are not rooted in positivity. You don’t want to be the person shaking their finger, and I’m totally aware that it’s an immense privilege, a social privilege and kind of an economic privilege to be able to abstain. But I think we’ve got to be upfront about the things that are making us sick as a society.”

She’s really off-off social media: “I’m not, like, lurking on a Finsta. I’m really off. I think I was known for having my finger on the pulse, so it was actually a huge decision philosophically for me to step back from that. But I started to see the phone as a portal. I can’t keep going through that portal, in the same way that I wouldn’t just take mushrooms all these moments of a day. It’s too deep a tunnel.”

Her alleged long-term relationship with Justin Warren: “I love when all famous people can say is, ‘I’m very happy.’  You can write that she’s very happy. Healthy boundaries.”

On fashion: “I can register fashion as both beautiful and absurd. I do remember that visceral moment”—at the Met gala in 2015—“of thinking, A pharaoh is lying right there, and we’re in couture. But I kind of love it. There’s tons to be gotten from all of it.”

She’s more comfortable putting her body out there: “When I said I felt young for the first time—it meant feeling like I’m confident enough to put my butt out there. I wouldn’t have been able to do that as a teenager. When you’re really famous as a young person, feelings get magnified. At that time, people were discussing my body on Twitter, and the natural response was to shrink away from it. Now I have a sense of my worth and my power, and my body is—awesome, for one thing.”

[From Vogue]

I enjoy how casually she takes all of this. I mean, she’s a big deal, the prototype for the current era of Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, the teenage-girl-with-feelings. But Lorde is also the prototype for outgrowing that image and giving herself the space to develop into something else. I’ve seen the reviews complaining about Solar Power, that it’s not as good as Pure Heroine or Melodrama, but I think all of this is a great sign for her career: she’s clearly doing what she wants, she’s in control of herself, her image and her sound, she writes what she wants and she’s fine if you don’t like it too. She’s not trying to act cool – she is cool because she’s indifferent to the daily pop-music wranglings and drama.

Emily Blunt in Miu Miu for the 2021 Met Gala: is she the Statue of Liberty?

MET Gala Departures 2021

Emily Blunt is an American citizen, even though she has regrets about that. I was hoping that for the America-themed Met Gala, Emily would turn in some British-American, transatlantic, interesting look from a well-known American designer or British designer. Instead she went with Miu Miu? And it’s got a built-in cape and it’s kind of sparkly, and then she’s wearing a headpiece. I think it might be her sartorial take on the Statue of Liberty? Anyway, I did end up liking this.

Karlie Kloss wore a very big, architectural Carolina Herrera. She looks okay and she definitely followed the “go big” theme that wasn’t actually a theme. I just wish the dress wasn’t made of that stiff-looking taffeta! It feels so PROM. That’s not her husband Joshua Kushner either, although Joshua has attended the Met Gala with Karlie before.

Lorde wore Bode and an elaborate headpiece. This reminded me of those awkward years where Prada was just sewing random sh-t onto their dresses for no reason. I actually thought this was Prada when I first saw it! But no. In any case, it sort of suits Lorde.

Anna Wintour wore Oscar de la Renta. I liked this? She usually looks like a Death Eater, but this is cheerful, chic and pretty.

Lorde is ‘a hothouse flower, a delicate person & a massive introvert’

Lorde at The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Lorde’s new album, Solar Power, comes out on August 20th. I can’t even publish the album cover because Lorde really did get her ass out. But the message is there, apparently: get your ass out. Put down your phone. Stop fussing over everything. Enjoy yourself. In case anyone needed to have that underlined, Lorde chatted with the NY Times about the album, what she was doing in the four years in between Melodrama and Solar Power, and how it’s sexist to talk about how Jack Antonoff has a stable of female singer-songwriters he produces and he’s the one responsible for their success. You can read the full Times piece here. Some highlights:

Where she’s been for four years: “I went back to living my life,” she said of her recent hiatus, identifying as “a hothouse flower, a delicate person and a massive introvert,” drained after a year-plus of promotion and touring for “Melodrama.” “It’s hard for people to understand that. The question I’ve gotten a lot recently is, ‘What have you been doing?’ I’m like, ‘Oh, no, no, no — this is a break from my life.’ I come back and perform these duties because I believe in the album.”

She was addicted to the internet: “I would see my screen-time go to like, 11 hours and I knew it was just looking at the Daily Mail. I remember sitting up in bed and realizing I could get to the end of my life and have done this every day. And it’s up to me to choose, right now. So I just sort of chose.”

She changed her phone settings & learned to live: Lorde’s phone, set to grayscale, now has no internet browser; she is locked out of her social-media apps, with others handling the passwords; and a coder friend even made YouTube inaccessible on her laptop. Instead, she cooked, baked, walked the dog, swam, gardened — chilled, in other words.

She’s not anyone’s savior: “I’m aware of the way people look at me. I can feel the huge amount of love and devotion that people have for me — and for people in my position — and straightaway, I wanted to be like, ‘I’m not the one that’s worthy of your devotion. I’m essentially like you.’ My kids — my community — they’re expecting spiritual transcendence from me, from these works. ‘I need Lorde to come back and tell me how to feel, tell me how to process this period in my life!’ I was like, oh, man, I don’t know if I can help you with that. But what I do know is that if we all look up here, it’s going to help you a lot!”

For the album, she only used a single 808 drum machine: “There’s definitely not a smash. It makes sense that there wouldn’t be a smash, because I don’t even know really what the smashes are now.”

She’ll never make another “Royals.” “What a lost cause. Can you imagine? I’m under no illusion. That was a moonshot.”

The third album: “I felt like I could just chill out and flex a little bit.”

Working with Jack Antonoff yet again: “I haven’t made a Jack Antonoff record. I’ve made a Lorde record and he’s helped me make it and very much deferred to me on production and arrangement. Jack would agree with this. To give him that amount of credit is frankly insulting.” She called the narrative — which has also included speculation about the pair’s romantic and sexual life — “retro” and “sexist.” “I know that there are certain hallmarks of what Jack does and some of those things I really love and some of them I don’t like. And I beat them out of the work that we do together. I say this with so much love and affection, but I feel like we’re doing up a house together and he’s like, ‘Look at this serviette that I fashioned into the shape of two swans! Look at this set of woven baskets!’ And I’m like, ‘Great — one per room.’”

On her personal & professional relationship with Jack: “No one who’s in a job that isn’t my job has a relationship like the one I have with Jack. He’s like a partner to me. We’re in a relationship. It’s not a romantic relationship, but we’ve been in it for seven years, and it’s a really unique thing, so I don’t begrudge people maybe not being able to understand it.”

[From The NY Times]

Am I alone in still listening to Pure Heroine though? She really did capture lightning in a bottle with her first album. Melodrama wasn’t bad at all – she has some real bops in there, and I think she grew as a pop songwriter. I’m curious about her personal and lyrical evolution for the third album – what was precocious as a 16-year-old might seem patronizing as a 24 year old. That being said, I like that her message is go offline, get a life, make friends, go for a walk, etc. It would be very easy for her – as it’s easy for many artists – to keep her fans agitated, aggrieved and engaged with her drama.

As for the Jack Antonoff stuff… there is that same-y quality to the records he produces though. That’s why Lana started to sound a bit Taylor-ish and why Taylor definitely started sounding Lana-ish and why Lorde leaned into a frothier sound on Melodrama and on and on. I’m not saying Jack is responsible for the careers of these women, but he is responsible for making them sound alike!

Kate Hudson is casually dating Diplo, Katy Perry’s ex, but his rep denies it

Kate Hudson and Diplo at The Standard High Line in NYC
Kate Hudson was seen leaving the Met Gala in May with Diplo (above), whom you might remember as Katy Perry’s ex and the guy who saw through Taylor Swift’s BS before it was as transparent as it is now. (After reviewing some stories about his beef with Taylor, he seems rather prescient about her.) Kaiser reminds me that Diplo is also a highly successful producer and DJ and that she would still hate bang him. So would Kate Hudson, apparently, because these two are said to have hooked up some time last week in Ibiza.

Kate Hudson has found her boy of summer: Diplo. “They are dating,” a source reveals a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly.

The actress and the DJ, both 37, who exited NYC’s Met Gala together in May, connected in mid-July near Ibiza, Spain, the insider says. She was vacationing with girlfriends; he had a day off after playing nearby at club Pacha. (His rep denies the romance.)

She documented her travels and raved about her trip via Instagram. “What a blast,” the Marshall star posted July 18. “Til next time, Ibiza!”

Before the getaway, she reunited with her ex fiancé, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, to celebrate their son Bingham’s fifth birthday by jetting to London July 9 to see the new Harry Potter play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. (The Glee alum also shares 12-year-old son Ryder with her ex-husband, Chris Robinson.)

[From US Magazine]

Good for her. It looks like a casual hookup and that seems like the type of relationship Kate prefers. Also she like musicians, her last thing was with Nick Jonas and of course she has son Bing with Muse’s Matt Bellamy and was married to The Black Crowes’s Chris Robinson. (To my friend J who insisted last week that DJs/producers are not musicians, you are WRONG. I didn’t tell you to your face but I will do so in this passive aggressive way now.) I would kind of love it if Kate and Diplo became a power couple and started a PR feud with Taylor and Tom. That’s not going to happen, but it would be like Gossip Christmas and Gossip New Year’s put together.

Also, do you remember how Cher tweeted earlier this week that Kate Hudson’s clothing subscription service, Fabletics, seemed like a scam? Well Life & Style has a new story about how Kate is mad at her mom, Goldie Hawn, for buying clothing from a competitor. They quote a source who says that Goldie “recently went into Exhale, a spa in NYC, and bought loads of great Victoria Keen yoga pants and spawear.” Kate was said to be “furious… [she] obviously wants her mom to be wearing her Fabletics line.” Goldie has Instagrammed photos where she’s wearing Fabletics but she said Kate sent them to her. It’s not like Goldie is going to pay $50 a month to get sent clothing someone else picks for her, she wants to go in and buy it herself.

Taylor Swift’s friends think she’s definitely going to get engaged to Calvin Harris

FFN_THUMBS42FF_Swift_Lorde_032616_52005452

Here are some photos of Taylor Swift and Lorde out in West Hollywood on Friday night. This is the most I’ve liked Taylor’s bob – it works better when she pushes her bangs to the side, right? They went out to The Nice Guy, a popular hotspot for the young and wealthy. Lorde still isn’t old enough to drink in America, so I wonder what she does when Taylor is sipping cocktails? Anyway, Swifty has been in LA for much of the year, ever since her tour ended. What’s nice is that her boyfriend Calvin Harris has also been camped out in LA, where he also has a home. Things seem to be going pretty well for them – they celebrated their one-year anniversary with a nice vacation, and there are many, many rumors that Taylor is thinking about marrying him. According to Grazia (via The Belfast Telegraph):

“Before meeting Calvin she’d completely sworn off men and was focusing on her career,” an insider told Britain’s Grazia magazine. “The last thing she wanted was to get involved with another high-profile man but they just clicked. This is the most secure Taylor has ever felt. It’s not been easy getting there after everything she’s been through with her previous boyfriends but Calvin has proved over the last year that he’s The One.”

Calvin spending Christmas (Dec15) with Taylor’s family in Colorado “sealed the deal” for both the stars, the source added. The couple have recently enjoyed some time alone together when they jetted to a tropical location for a much-deserved break. Now the pair’s pals are gearing up for an engagement announcement, with the general feeling that Taylor and Calvin will undoubtedly be walking down the aisle at some point in the future.

“It definitely feels like that’s where it’s headed, but who knows how they’d find the time to plan a wedding,” the source smiled. “They had to move mountains to make their holiday work and their hectic schedules are a challenging obstacle when it comes to finding time for each other. But for now, as far as friends are concerned it’s not a case of if, but when.”

[From The Belfast Telegraph]

I’m very interested in seeing what a Taylor Swift-Calvin Harris engagement would look like. I think her fans would be very surprised, especially since many of them treat Swifty like she’s still 17 years old and in need of “protection.” What would it mean for her fandom if Taylor really did get engaged and it was for real, because Taylor and Calvin truly adore each other and it’s a mature, adult relationship? Hm.

Speaking of mature adults, Taylor and her brother Austin got into a crazy Easter egg war over the holiday, and Taylor posted the videos on her Twitter:

Camille Paglia: Taylor Swift ‘should retire that obnoxious Nazi Barbie routine’

wenn22498515

Much like 14-year-old Rowan Blanchard, noted feminist writer Camille Paglia has some thoughts about #SquadGoals, specifically regarding the biggest Squad Goaler of them all, Taylor Swift. Paglia wrote an essay for The Hollywood Reporter about her complicated relationship with the idea of “squads” and whether or not they’re “the blossoming of an idealistic new feminism.” Most of the piece reads like a (slightly half-assed and out-of-touch) history of the representations of female friendships in entertainment, but then Paglia basically says that Squads have the power to offer genuine female companionship, mentorship and friendship, but only if those squads don’t fall into the Taylor Swift Squad Model. You can read the essay here. Here’s the Taylor Swift portion:

Young women performers are now at the mercy of a swarming, intrusive paparazzi culture, intensified by the hypersexualization of our flesh-baring fashions. The girl squad phenomenon has certainly been magnified by how isolated and exposed young women feel in negotiating the piranha shoals of the industry. A dramatic example of their vulnerability was the long-lens pap photo of Taylor Swift sitting painfully sad and prim on a Virgin Islands taxi boat after her tumultuous 2013 holiday breakup with pop star Harry Styles.

Given the professional stakes, girl squads must not slide into a cozy, cliquish retreat from romantic fiascoes or communication problems with men, whom feminist rhetoric too often rashly stereotypes as oafish pigs. If many women feel lonely or overwhelmed these days, it’s not due to male malice. Women have lost the natural solidarity and companionship they enjoyed for thousands of years in the preindustrial agrarian world, where multiple generations chatted through the day as they shared chores, cooking and child care.

In our wide-open modern era of independent careers, girl squads can help women advance if they avoid presenting a silly, regressive public image — as in the tittering, tongues-out mugging of Swift’s bear-hugging posse. Swift herself should retire that obnoxious Nazi Barbie routine of wheeling out friends and celebrities as performance props, an exhibitionistic overkill that Lara Marie Schoenhals brilliantly parodied in her scathing viral video “Please Welcome to the Stage.”

Girl squads ought to be about mentoring, exchanging advice and experience and launching exciting and innovative joint projects. Women need to study the immensely productive dynamic of male bonding in history. With their results-oriented teamwork, men largely have escaped the sexual jealousy, emotionalism and spiteful turf wars that sometimes dog women.

If women in Hollywood seek a broad audience, they must aim higher and transcend a narrow gender factionalism that thrives on grievance. Girl squads are only an early learning stage of female development. For women to leave a lasting mark on culture, they need to cut down on the socializing and focus like a laser on their own creative gifts.
