Elton John & Ryan White’s mom wrote about funding cuts to HIV & AIDS prevention

You know how Donald Trump and his husky henchman RFK Jr. have been systematically dismantling all the vast healthcare agencies, panels and research that, you know, keep us alive? Plus the executive orders and budget proposals the Orange Menace has pushed that have anti-LGBTQ policies laced in? Yeah, so major funding cuts to HIV and AIDS prevention are on the table with this bigly budget bill, and Elton John has taken up the pen to advocate against these drastic cuts. He’s co-written an op-ed with Jeanne White-Ginder, mother to the late Ryan White, who contracted HIV through a contaminated blood transfusion in 1984 when he was 13, and died from the disease six years later. Ryan was a driving influence in Elton creating his AIDS Foundation in 1992, and even before that, Ryan’s story prompted Congress to pass the Ryan White CARE Act in 1990, which still provides lifesaving treatment to more than 500,000 Americans. Here is an excerpt from the op-ed:

In 2019, President Trump proudly launched the End the HIV Epidemic initiative in his State of the Union address — a focused prevention effort to end the HIV epidemic in America by 2030.

This evidence-based strategic initiative has achieved remarkable results, reducing new HIV infections by 21% in targeted communities and connecting people newly diagnosed with HIV to vital care and support services.

This push to end AIDS is in full swing across America, but the work is not done yet — with young people, particularly in the South, now most severely impacted.

We are grateful that the draft budget before Congress continues critically important funding for the Ryan White CARE Act and the End the HIV Epidemic efforts. That is an affirmation of these programs’ effectiveness and bipartisan support.

However, the proposal also would end federal funding to states for HIV surveillance, testing and education; for community-based organizations that reach those most at risk; and for substance abuse treatment and mental health programs that are crucial for driving down HIV infections.

Attempts to cut Medicaid are also alarming, as more than 40% of people living with HIV have their care and treatment covered by Medicaid.

Without this essential insurance, scores of people living with HIV won’t get the care and medicines they need to keep them healthy. The president has said don’t mess with Medicaid. We agree.

Programs that provide treatment, fuel prevention and fight stigma should be expanded, not eliminated, as we work toward eradicating the disease that ended Ryan’s life.

The game-changing opportunity of the moment is to scale up prevention medication that keeps people HIV-free. The recent American-led development of PrEP — a pill or shot that prevents the virus from taking hold — is just the tool we need to end AIDS, but only if we make it accessible to those who need it.

The economics are compelling: 14,000 people can receive generic PrEP ($30 annually) for the lifetime cost of treating one person with HIV ($420,285) — keeping Americans healthy, HIV-free and productive.

The moment of truth is here. As the administration and Congress consider their investment priorities for next year, we urge them to continue joining forces in the fight against AIDS in the United States and worldwide.

Together, their investments over time have created this once-in-a-generation opportunity to end AIDS in America by 2030, as called for by President Trump. Together they can seize that opportunity by banking on prevention.

[From USA Today]

Clearly, Elton and Jeanne took the persuasion tactic of stroking Trump’s ego. And I get it; it’s an astute strategy, centering Trump in the story and thus appealing to the only thing the man cares about (himself). But my gosh, it roils me that the most effective way of dealing with Tantrum Trump is catering to his infantile disposition, all because no one corrected the behavior at the appropriate time — when he was a toddler! This poor woman lost her son, and now she has to grovel to a giant idiot in the hopes of stopping other people from experiencing her pain. Elton and Jeanne: you’re better and more selfless than I am. I don’t know how you could stomach puffing up that tiny (fisted) dancer’s feathers, but I hope with every fiber of my being that it works.

Elton John & Harry Styles turned down offers to perform at the Chubbly

Last week, we heard the funny news that Adele and Ed Sheeran had turned down invitations to perform at King Charles’s three-day coronation weekend. Charles and the British government will burn through more than $100 million on the coronation festivities, which include some kind of coronation concert. Only no one wants to perform at the concert. Buckingham Palace keeps openly and publicly pursuing British singers and British bands and the palace keeps getting turned down. As in, no one wants to be associated with this sh-tshow. Hilariously, Elton John, the Spice Girls and Harry Styles have now turned down Chubbly Concert invitations too.

Three A-list stars have reportedly turned down the opportunity to perform at King Charles’ Coronation concert this spring. The concert is set to take place at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May, with a slew of stars taking to the stage to mark the occasion. Music man of the hour Harry Styles, legendary hitmaker Elton John and ’90s pop sensations the Spice Girls are all said to have been approached.

According to The Sun, the three acts all turned down the opportunity due to their busy schedules. MailOnline has contacted representatives for Buckingham Palace, Harry Styles, Elton John and Spice Girls for comment.

Harry is currently city-hopping with his concert tour, named Love On Tour, and will be performing in Coventry in May. While the Spice Girls, who were made up of Victoria Beckham, Mel C, Mel B, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton and split up in 2000, were said to reunite for the coronation. Last month, they were reported to be coming back together for the concert – but now appear to have turned down the performance.

Elsewhere, Take That are reportedly set to join the star-studded line-up of acts, including sisters Kylie and Dannii Minogue. The iconic boyband, which now consists of Gary Barlow, 52, Mark Owen, 51, and Howard Donald, 54, are said to be headlining the event at Windsor Castle in May, according to The Sun. It is expected that Jason Orange, who left the band in 2014, could also sing with them in the celebration. However, Robbie Williams is understood to not be appearing in the show.

The show is being broadcast on the BBC, a day after the King’s Coronation and is expected to draw in huge ratings.

I mean… if Kylie Minogue is performing, I’m sure her fans will tune in, but beyond that… like, why would anyone care? It’s amazing that the palace even approached Elton!! Elton was good friends with Diana, Elton persuaded Harry to hire his own lawyers and sue the pants off of British tabloids. Elton John is not here for Charles’s clownery. It looks like the Spice Girls have no interest either. And of course Harry Styles is way too big and important for any of this. LMAO!! Please tell me the palace will go to Radiohead only to be personally insulted by Thom Yorke.

Elton John slams Dolce & Gabbana for their ‘synthetic children’ comments

wenn3554026

This ^^ is a photo of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, also known as Dolce & Gabbana, the fashion designing team. They are both gay. And Dolce & Gabbana just gave an interview in which they seemed to come out against gay marriage, gay adoptions and gay couples using surrogates. It’s a gay-on-gay hate crime! So, obviously, the godfather of all things LGBTQ, Elton John, has something to say about it: boycott Dolce & Gabbana for being anti-gay-family.

Elton John, who shares two children with his husband, is fuming mad at Dolce & Gabbana’s Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana over comments they made about same-sex parents and babies conceived via artificial insemination. The top designers, who are also gay and were once a couple, had made their remarks to Italian magazine Panorama in an interview published last week.

“You are born to a mother and a father. Or at least that’s how it should be,” Dolce said. “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented wombs, semen chosen from a catalog.”

“How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic,’” John wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday. “And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children…Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana.”

“I’m gay, I can not have a child,” Dolce told Panorama. “Life has its natural course, there are things that must not be changed. And one of these is the family.” Gabbana added that “the family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging,” according to the U.K. newspaper The Telegraph.

[From E! News]

If you go and read the E! News link, there’s further background about Dolce & Gabbana’s history of saying stuff about how they don’t believe children should have two gay parents, especially (it seems?) if we’re talking about two gay men, because they respect motherhood too much or something. It’s all sort of convoluted reasoning, like most bigotry against LGBT parents.

Here’s the thing: I can sort of understand why someone old-fashioned, old-world would have an opinion on gay couples becoming parents. Don’t get me wrong, I still think Dolce & Gabbana are jackasses, but I understand how a person could have that mentality. What I don’t understand is the slam against the “synthetic children.” Do people really think that children conceived via IVF or surrogacy are “different” than naturally-conceived children? And what about the heterosexual couples that use IVF or surrogacy? Are those children “synthetic” as well?

Kim Kardashian’s Wedding Dress

So it happened. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West got married in Florence this weekend and it didn’t involve all of the world’s communication systems being appropriated to broadcast the couple’s vows, or any planets being forcibly re-aligned to spell out KIMYE 4 EVA. Whew.

It was still pretty elaborate though.  The menu sounded insanely yummy, and Elton John, Andrea Bocelli, John Legend and Lana del Rey all performed — though of course Kanye himself took the mic to rap at the end of the first dance. Also, his toast was more of a rant because, well, it’s Kanye.

Kim‘s brother Rob missed the ceremony because of some family drama, while Beyonce was also a no-show (though she did offer her congrats on Instagram).

The only glimpses of Kim’s Givenchy wedding dress we seem to be getting are from Instagram shots, which means they’ve undoubtedly signed a lucrative deal to splash the photos across the pages of some glossy, so don’t expect this story to go away anytime soon.
