Plus-Size Model Rosie Mercado Received Death Threats for Losing 240 lbs

The full story from Daily Mail: Plus-size model Rosie Mercado who shed 240lbs said she was targeted by ‘fat activists’ who told her to kill herself after her dramatic weight loss. The mother-of-three from Las Vegas said she does not ‘miss anything’ about being 410lbs but that she has received hate mail directed at her transformed body. The 36-year-old, who used to be a size 34 and is now a 12/14, was told to ‘jump off a bridge and kill myself’ by people who objected to her weight loss, she claimed in an interview with TMZ. ‘I got hate mail…Not so much from the other models, just fans that hated on me. They told me to go jump off a bridge and kill myself for losing weight. Fat activists, there you go. Yeah fat activists, they just hated the thought I was really public about my weight loss and I was losing weight,’ she said. While Rosie, who now weighs 170lbs, ‘loves’ her slimmer physique and the ‘freedom’ it has given her, she said some people reacted negatively to it. She said: ‘Because I guess everybody loves to be happy in their own weight. Some people love being overweight, some people don’t. I think it’s a personal choice and you’ve just got to take it, there’s good and bad that comes with any life choice and changes so you know what? You’ve just got to let it go and not pay attention to the negative remarks.’ Rosie said her critics did not like her being ‘authentic and open’ about the changes to her body and her subsequent tummy tuck and skin removal. Despite losing almost half her former body weight she said she is still plus-size, adding: ‘I love it.’ #Repost @healthyisthenewskinny with @repostapp ・・・ @rosiemercado, #girlgang member and model with @naturalmodelsla, was featured in @lifeandstyleweekly in our original HNS tank! Demi Lovato to a Fan: “Is that how my boobs should look?”

The full story from Huffington Post: [A fan] drawing of Lovato topless with a mermaid tail caught the singer’s attention, and not in the good way. “Is that how my boobs should look?” she commented on a fan’s Instagram that reposted the photo this week. “It’s gorgeous but that’s not my body.” The drawing is inspired by a sultry promotional shot from her new single “Body Say,” which shows Lovato nude, but sans mermaid tail, in the same position. Unlike the fan artwork, however, bed sheets largely cover her bust and waist. Vladimir Serbanescu, the Romanian artist responsible for the image, quickly defended his artwork on Instagram and responded to Lovato’s accusation that he misrepresented her body. “If i make your waist slimmer and your boobs bigger to accentuate the fact that i drew you as a mermaid, a mythological creature, doesn’t mean I say that you should look like that or all girls should look like that,” he wrote. “That’s how i imagine mermaids. I worked a lot on that drawing and i was proud of it, but not anymore.” If i make your waist slimmer and your boobs bigger to accentuate the fact that i drew you as a mermaid, a mythological creature, doesn't mean I say that you should look like that or all girls should look like that. Tim Gunn: “Have you shopped retail for size 14-plus clothing? It’s a horribly insulting and demoralizing experience”

On how fashion doesn’t love plus-sized women: “I love the American fashion industry, but it has a lot of problems, and one of them is the baffling way it has turned its back on plus-size women. It’s a puzzling conundrum. The average American woman now wears between a size 16 and a size 18, according to new research from Washington State University. There are 100 million plus-size women in America, and, for the past three years, they have increased their spending on clothes faster than their straight-size counterparts. There is money to be made here ($20.4 billion, up 17 percent from 2013). But many designers — dripping with disdain, lacking imagination or simply too cowardly to take a risk — still refuse to make clothes for them.” On what designers think: “I’ve spoken to many designers and merchandisers about this. The overwhelming response is, “I’m not interested in her.” Why? “I don’t want her wearing my clothes.” Why? “She won’t look the way that I want her to look.” They say the plus-size woman is complicated, different and difficult, that no two size 16s are alike. Some haven’t bothered to hide their contempt. “No one wants to see curvy women” on the runway, Karl Lagerfeld, head designer of Chanel, said in 2009. Plenty of mass retailers are no more enlightened: Under the tenure of chief executive Mike Jeffries, Abercrombie & Fitch sold nothing larger than a size 10, with Jeffries explaining that “we go after the attractive, all-American kid. This a design failure and not a customer issue. There is no reason larger women can’t look just as fabulous as all other women. The key is the harmonious balance of silhouette, proportion and fit, regardless of size or shape. Designs need to be reconceived, not just sized up; it’s a matter of adjusting proportions. The textile changes, every seam changes. Done right, our clothing can create an optical illusion that helps us look taller and slimmer. Done wrong, and we look worse than if we were naked.” On the fact that it is depressing to shop while plus-sized: “Have you shopped retail for size 14-plus clothing? Based on my experience shopping with plus-size women, it’s a horribly insulting and demoralizing experience. Half the items make the body look larger, with features like ruching, box pleats and shoulder pads. Pastels and large-scale prints and crazy pattern-mixing abound, all guaranteed to make you look infantile or like a float in a parade. Adding to this travesty is a major department-store chain that makes you walk under a marquee that reads “WOMAN.” What does that even imply? That a “woman” is anyone larger than a 12, and everyone else is a girl? It’s mind-boggling.” On how plus-size collections are all dated: “Despite the huge financial potential of this market, many designers don’t want to address it. It’s not in their vocabulary. Today’s designers operate within paradigms that were established decades ago, including anachronistic sizing. (Consider the fashion show: It hasn’t changed in more than a century.) But this is now the shape of women in this nation, and designers need to wrap their minds around it. I profoundly believe that women of every size can look good. But they must be given choices. Separates — tops, bottoms — rather than single items like dresses or jumpsuits always work best for the purpose of fit. Larger women look great in clothes skimming the body, rather than hugging or cascading. There’s an art to doing this. Designers, make it work.” … says Tim. On the worst part of working out: “I don’t like the smell of scalp sweat. Ugh!” On skipping workouts: “If I work out four times, I consider it a successful week. But it’s typically more like two to three days a week because that’s what I have time for. I take Spin or hot yoga classes in the morning, and I sacrifice sleep to fit them in. For me, the benefits of exercise are more mental than physical. Working out takes away that little edge so that I feel happier and more productive and my brain can get kick-started.” On the right food: “With exercise, I get a little more toned and I definitely feel stronger, but my diet is much more important if I’m trying to slim down. In that case, I usually don’t eat gluten, dairy, fried foods or processed foods. I try to stick to a diet that’s low in sugar and carbs and high in lean protein and vegetables.” On her indulgences: “I’m not big on carbs, but…some of my Honest colleagues and I just ate like a gallon of popcorn! Also, while I don’t usually have dessert, I do really like strawberry shortcake. I mean I really, really like it.” … says Jessica. Melania Trump on The Donald: ‘He’s not Hitler. He wants to help America’

Melania Trump covers the latest issue of DuJour Magazine, and this might be the best interview Melania has done thus far. And I’m saying that as someone who enjoyed Melania’s crazy GQ interview last month. This DuJour piece is even better! Melania comes across as unapologetically elitist, hilariously vapid and politically tone-deaf. Basically, it sounds like she and Donald Trump are perfect for each other. You can read the full piece here (it is long, but totally worth it), and here are some highlights: She doesn’t drink Starbucks: “I don’t drink Starbucks,” she says. You don’t drink coffee? I ask. “I drink coffee, but I don’t drink Starbucks. My son likes it, the what do you call it? The Frappuccino? He likes that.” The Clintons’ wedding gift to the Trumps? “I don’t think they sent a gift. Some people didn’t send gifts.” How she’s been misrepresented in the media: “That I’m shy. I’m not shy. I know what I want, and I’m selective.” On Chris Matthews’ leering comment about her model-strut: “Unbelievable. That’s what I’m saying! I’m not only a beauty, I’m smart. I have brains. I’m intelligent… I would just say, Men will be men.” Where she shopped for furniture when she first moved to NYC: “I went to Crate & Barrel. Does that still exist or no?” She moved in with Trump before they were married: “When I moved here with my husband, we weren’t married yet—so I kept my apartment.” Meeting Michael Jackson: “I met Michael Jackson. It was here in New York in the Pierre Hotel. He called us, so we went over and we had dinner. Just after dinner, we were chatting on the sofa and my husband went into another room to see some art somebody wanted to show him. And Michael said to me, ‘Hey, when Trump comes back, let’s start kissing so he will be jealous!’ ” They didn’t kiss, she says, “No, no, no. But we were laughing so hard.” She’s not a famewhore: “I have a life. I go out every day. I bring my son to school. I pick him up. I’m not an attention seeker. I’m not the one who calls paparazzi, ‘I have lunch with the girlfriends, and I’m going to this restaurant.’ I get along [with] the moms at the school pick-up, it’s ‘Hello, how are you?’ But it’s not friends friends. I like quality over quantity.” Her 10-year-old son doesn’t sleep on the same floor as his parents: “The third floor is Barron’s. It’s much easier that way. For him as well. He has friends over, he has his toys. He has a play date tomorrow and is bringing two friends over. They come here, they go upstairs and they play. They kick a ball, they play with iPads. I don’t allow Xbox before homework is done.” What happens for immigrants, like Melania, who want to come to the US legally: “The law needs to be changed to help those kind of people. But they can’t just sneak in and be here. That’s what I’m saying. I do have sympathy. I’m a very compassionate person. But don’t sneak in and stay here without papers. We need to follow the law. If the law needs to be different, we need to do that.” On Louis CK calling Trump “Hitler”: “We know the truth. He’s not Hitler. He wants to help America. He wants to unite people. They think he doesn’t but he does. Even with the Muslims, it’s temporary… Maybe he needs to say it in a softer way. He doesn’t go after religions. He feels like we need to know who’s coming to this country. If not, we don’t have a country. That’s how he feels. We see how he is, and he wants to unite the country and bring people together and bring jobs back.” On campaigning in Iowa: “It was kind of a fun experience. We stayed in a hotel. It was clean. It was, I think, a Holiday Inn. You do it in a fun way. My husband knows me and how I am. I like beautiful stuff. I live the life. It’s funny when we go and travel. They don’t have five-star hotels there, but you go with it. It was a great experience in Iowa, because we went to an Evangelical church on Sunday. The church we got married in is very different. In Iowa there was a band, there was singing. It was very different, but it was a great experience. Being on the campaign trail and traveling around the country is hard work.” [From DuJour] Aren’t these quotes amazing? The Crate & Barrel thing, the way she obviously charmed by the peasants in Iowa, the way she has to mention that it’s hard work on the campaign trail because there aren’t many five-star hotels. What else is there? Her obliviousness to the privilege she had as a white, European model immigrating to the US versus those other people. The fact that she keeps insisting that she’s all about being a stay-at-home mother while her 10-year-old son has an entire floor in Trump Tower! There’s also a lengthy section where Melania tries to convince DuJour that Donald Trump values her ideas and that she’s one of the few people who can really advise him. If you believe that… well, God bless. Update: I misidentified Barron as 7-years-old originally, but he’s 10. Photos courtesy of WENN, DuJour.
