Camille Paglia: Taylor Swift ‘should retire that obnoxious Nazi Barbie routine’

wenn22498515

Much like 14-year-old Rowan Blanchard, noted feminist writer Camille Paglia has some thoughts about #SquadGoals, specifically regarding the biggest Squad Goaler of them all, Taylor Swift. Paglia wrote an essay for The Hollywood Reporter about her complicated relationship with the idea of “squads” and whether or not they’re “the blossoming of an idealistic new feminism.” Most of the piece reads like a (slightly half-assed and out-of-touch) history of the representations of female friendships in entertainment, but then Paglia basically says that Squads have the power to offer genuine female companionship, mentorship and friendship, but only if those squads don’t fall into the Taylor Swift Squad Model. You can read the essay here. Here’s the Taylor Swift portion:

Young women performers are now at the mercy of a swarming, intrusive paparazzi culture, intensified by the hypersexualization of our flesh-baring fashions. The girl squad phenomenon has certainly been magnified by how isolated and exposed young women feel in negotiating the piranha shoals of the industry. A dramatic example of their vulnerability was the long-lens pap photo of Taylor Swift sitting painfully sad and prim on a Virgin Islands taxi boat after her tumultuous 2013 holiday breakup with pop star Harry Styles.

Given the professional stakes, girl squads must not slide into a cozy, cliquish retreat from romantic fiascoes or communication problems with men, whom feminist rhetoric too often rashly stereotypes as oafish pigs. If many women feel lonely or overwhelmed these days, it’s not due to male malice. Women have lost the natural solidarity and companionship they enjoyed for thousands of years in the preindustrial agrarian world, where multiple generations chatted through the day as they shared chores, cooking and child care.

In our wide-open modern era of independent careers, girl squads can help women advance if they avoid presenting a silly, regressive public image — as in the tittering, tongues-out mugging of Swift’s bear-hugging posse. Swift herself should retire that obnoxious Nazi Barbie routine of wheeling out friends and celebrities as performance props, an exhibitionistic overkill that Lara Marie Schoenhals brilliantly parodied in her scathing viral video “Please Welcome to the Stage.”

Girl squads ought to be about mentoring, exchanging advice and experience and launching exciting and innovative joint projects. Women need to study the immensely productive dynamic of male bonding in history. With their results-oriented teamwork, men largely have escaped the sexual jealousy, emotionalism and spiteful turf wars that sometimes dog women.

If women in Hollywood seek a broad audience, they must aim higher and transcend a narrow gender factionalism that thrives on grievance. Girl squads are only an early learning stage of female development. For women to leave a lasting mark on culture, they need to cut down on the socializing and focus like a laser on their own creative gifts.

OMG: Woman Glued to Toilet Seat At Home Depot

Atlanta: Woman Glued to Toilet Seat
Home Depot Prank: Woman Glued to Toilet Seat

On the day before Thanksgiving, a woman, Illyanna De La Keur, was shopping with family members at Home Depot in Atlanta. The woman used the store’s bathroom and after it was too late, realized someone had put superglue on the toilet seat. She could not remove herself, and paramedics had to be called.

Illyanna sat for an hour as paramedics carefully removed her from the toilet seat, but it was not painless. She was left with injuries and was understandably humiliated.
Illyanna wants to find out who the culprit was, and she’s angry about not being transported to a hospital for the toilet seat’s removal.
Watch the video interview over at WSBTV.

If you ask me, Jimmy Kimmel is THE greatest late night talk show host right now. No question. The following video is just one of the many examples why.

Jimmy’s “Lie Detective” piece is a hilarious bit done with children who think they are connected to a lie detector machine. This is his ‘Naught or Nice’ edition.

9/11 Angel Image in World Trade Center’s Twisted Steel?

The Angel of 9/11 Image
“The Angel of 9/11” image seen on WTC debris

TODAY had an interesting piece on the “9/11 Angel,” an image found in debris from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Do you think it’s a sign, or a coincidence?

“A photographer captured, what some workers say, they’ve been seeing for months.” – TODAY

Construction workers have dubbed the image, “The Angel of 9/11.” Some people believe the image is more than just “corrosion,” as the experts have reasoned.

In related news, I came across this interesting video the other day as well. Apparently the One World Trade Center has quite an eerie sound in certain weather conditions. A New Yorker recently captured a video of the haunting sounds coming from the area as the wind blew in the middle of the night. Listen to it here.

#WalmartFights – Black Friday Website Shows Violent Statistics

#WalmartFights Black Friday
#WalmartFights in 2013

It seems Black Friday just keeps more and more violent in recent years and this season is no different. Thanksgiving night videos and photos of jam-packed Walmarts across the nation flooded social media sites.

The hashtag #WalmartFights trended.

Black Friday can be dangerous, and people have been trampled, punched, cut and shot over parking spaces, cutting in line, or over merchandise. So naturally there is a website that keeps track of injuries, and deaths, that have occurred on Black Friday.

So far for 2013, BlackFridayDeathCount.com has reported nine incidents across the country.

Trent Reznor FaceTimes With Terminal Cancer Patient During Show

Trent Reznor FaceTimes Friend Onstage

Who doesn’t love Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails? One of my favorite band to come out of the late 80s/early 90s, Nine Inch Nails are still relevant and rocking  like it’s 1990.

This past weekend Trent and the boys gave us another reason to love them.

During their show in Las Vegas on Saturday, Reznor pulled out his iPhone 5S and FaceTimed with a friend, photojournalist Andrew Youssef, who is dying of colon cancer.

From Apple Insider:

In covering NIN’s performance at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival this summer, Youssef described his emotional connection with the band’s music and lyrics entwined in his own battle with cancer.

Reznor began following Youssef on Twitter shortly afterward, and then invited him to a performance at the more intimate Troubadour in West Hollywood, where the two became fast friends. As Youssef’s condition deteriorated, his doctor advised against also attending the November 16th show at the Hard Rock Hotel as he had planned.

Youssef was brought “onstage” via FaceTime by Reznor, who pointed his phone at the audience and said to his pal, “I’ve got some friends I want you to meet.”

The crowd chanted, “Andrew, Andrew, Andrew!”

Trent Reznor and NIN then dedicated ‘In This Twilight’ to Youssef.

Walmart Creep Shamed By Female Customer

Walmart Masturbater Brian Hounslow

Beth Davis went shopping at her local Walmart in Tulsa, Oklahoma Wednesday morning and had to use the ladies room. When she entered the bathroom she discovered a man, with his pants down, masturbating in front of a mirror.

Davis went into action, yelling at the man loudly for other shoppers to hear while pulling out her cell phone to record video. As she records she is heard saying, “My name is Beth Davis and I witnessed it. You were naked, you had your pants down. Someone stop him! Do not let him go out that door!”

The Walmart masturbater, later identified as Brian Hounslow of Broken Arrow, OK, 37, kept his hands in his pockets as he ventured toward the front door of the Walmart store. As he got closer to the exit he began running. He ran to his car and fled the scene.

Hounslow was later arrested after witnesses reported his license plate number to authorities.

Beth Davis later told TV station KOTV: ”So, I walked into the restroom, and there was a man completely naked, no shirt, nothing, pants around his ankles in front of the mirror. He was a deer in headlights. That’s when he said he really didn’t know it was the women’s restroom. Really, dude? That’s what you have to say here?”

Oh, the people of Walmart…
