Jay Leno thinks Stephen Colbert was fired because he wasn’t doing ‘both sides’ comedy

When Jay Leno was hosting the Tonight Show, he was always known as a “both sides” guy. He generally gave equal time to Democrats and Republicans, and politicians knew that Leno was never going to be a hard-hitting interview where they would have to be on the defensive. Leno’s monologues sometimes had political jokes, but again, he was an equal-opportunity comedian who made jokes about Dems and Republicans. A lot has changed since Leno was on network television, and the landscape of political comedy and late-night comedy has changed dramatically in the past decade especially. But Leno is out of touch with those changes, and so he blamed Stephen Colbert for Colbert’s own firing at CBS. This is one of the smarmiest interviews I’ve read in a minute.

Jay Leno is speaking out about the political landscape of late-night television, given the recent cancellation of The Late Show. In a July 27 interview with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute, the comedian and former late-night host said, “I love political humor, don’t get me wrong, but what happens is people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other. I don’t think anybody wants to hear a lecture,” he added.

Leno, 75, hosted The Tonight Show from 1992 to 2009 and then again — after a messy, public handover-gone-wrong with Conan O’Brien — from 2010 to 2014. While there was plenty of political fodder during that time, he said he tried not to alienate viewers by going too far to one side or the other.

“Why shoot for half an audience? Why not try to get the whole? I like to bring people into the big picture. I don’t understand why you would alienate one particular group,” he said. “Or just don’t do it at all. I’m not saying you have to throw your support or whatever, but just do what’s funny.”

In fact, Leno said, he prided himself when angry feedback came from both sides of the aisle.

“It was fun to me when I got hate letters: ‘You and your Republican friends’ [or] ‘Well, I hope you and your Democratic buddies are happy’… over the same joke,” he recalled. “I go, ‘Well, that’s good.’ That’s how you get a whole audience. [Nowadays], you have to be content with half the audience because you have to give your opinion.”

Leno’s criticism comes just over a week after Stephen Colbert made the shocking announcement that his No. 1-rated Late Show was being canceled after more than 30 years.

[From People]

The greatest comedy myth is that there’s a certain kind of comedy which will be funny/palatable/apolitical enough for both sides. The greatest political myth is that both sides are equal, and both sides need to be lampooned/criticized/mocked in equal measure. “Yeah, so Trump-supporting assassins murdered Minnesota politicians, but let’s make a Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky joke!” Colbert tried to read the room AND listen to his conscience – he tried to speak for the people using his particular pulpit, and he tried to speak with both humor and honesty in a much crazier and much more dangerous political landscape. While I didn’t agree with some of Colbert’s political positions and jokes, I find Colbert a million times braver than Jay Leno.

Meanwhile, David Letterman also spoke out a few days during a YouTube discussion – he blasted the f–k out of CBS, called the cancellation of The Late Show “gutless” and “pure cowardice,” and absolutely stood up for Colbert. Letterman was always better than Leno. At everything, in every way.

Demi Moore pays over $700 a visit for her dog to get acupuncture

This is one of the most egregious examples I’ve heard of celebrity excess when it comes to pets, and is probably a close second to the mini mansions Paris Hilton had built for her dogs. (They were complete with air conditioning, chandeliers and little staircases.) According to US Magazine, Demi Moore pays over $700 a visit for her non-sick chihuahua to get acupuncture at home – twice a week. Holy crap! If she does that every week that’s around $67,000 a year. In a visit to David Letterman years ago, Demi said that she had leeches applied to her body in some kind of bizarre “detox” treatment, so I would believe that she pays this exorbitant amount of money for something of questionable effectiveness for a pet. Her heart is probably in the right place, but it sounds like a massive ripoff to me.

On paws and needles! A source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly that a veterinarian makes biweekly house calls to Demi Moore’s L.A. mansion to give her Chihuahua, Vida Blue, acupuncture. The going rate? Up to $715 per session.

“There’s nothing wrong with her dog,” says the source. The G.I. Jane actress, 53, “is just really into holistic food and medicine for her animals, the way she is for herself.”

The more than 2,000-year-old Chinese healing art is known to have a therapeutic effect on a wide range of animal ailments.

“It can calm down an anxious dog,” veterinarian Patrick Mahaney, who has treated Lisa Vanderpump’s beloved Pomeranian, Giggy, tells Us. “It also stimulates appetite and treats muscle spasms.”

The mom of Rumer, 27, Scout, 24, and Tallulah, 21, with ex-husband Bruce Willis, has been filming indie movie Blind in New York City with Alec Baldwin.

The actor, 57, plays a novelist blinded in a car crash that killed his wife. He rediscovers his love of writing when he falls for a woman played by Moore. The actress and Baldwin starred together in the 1996 thriller The Juror.

Anthony Mackie explains

Anthony Mackie

Anthony Mackie made several unsavory statements earlier this year, especially when he said Selma didn’t win Oscars because people are “bombarded with race.” Then he switched gears with some weird sexist remarks like, “Make daddy a sandwich.” Mackie’s stayed quiet lately because he’s been busy shooting Civil War, although he briefly surfaced to try and find a girlfriend for his bro, Chris Evans. Mackie’s such a talented actor, but man, his messy mouth ruins everything.

Mackie is back to promote Our Brand Is Crisis. A few days ago, he said something about supporting Donald Trump but claimed to be joking. Now he’s spoken with the Daily Beast about Marvel’s Black Panther and more. Mackie very much wanted that role (which recently went to Chadwick Boseman); they hired Mackie to play Falcoln (in the Captain America movies) instead. It all worked out for Mackie, who was still able to yell “Cut the check!” after every scene, and he’s an Avenger. Mackie tells The Beast how a black director doesn’t have to helm Black Panther, and he does not deliver his sentiment well:

Mackie on international relations: “To be in that political world … they’re just different types of people. They’re not like normal regular people. They swoop in, impose their will, and swoop out. I think they have the ability not to care. Normal people, even if you do something, it still affects you in a certain way. In some way, shape, or form – old rule – you should never leave a place worse than when you found it. You should always try to make it a little better. But it’s funny to look at how drastically different people are in certain situations, because I don’t think we should go around the world and impose democracy on everybody. Some people just aren’t made for democracy. Some people just need a dictator. That’s just who they are.”

On race and directing Black Panther: “I don’t think it’s important at all. As a director your job is to tell a story. You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit! The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice. I think men can direct women, and two of my greatest work experiences were with female directors. So I think it all depends. May the best man – or woman – win.”

Why he lives in NOLA: “If you live in the sh*t, you’ll be in the sh*t. That’s why I live in New Orleans, because no one cares! No one bothers you.”

[From Daily Beast]

CB wanted me to mention that Mackie and Matt Damon are good buddies. They starred together in Adjustment Bureau, and Mackie won a bet, so he made Matty wear a New Orleans Saints jersey to visit David Letterman. So Mackie is all about ‘Nawlins for sure.

What do you think of Mackie’s thoughts on directing the Black Panther? The whole “they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit” is a ginormous oversimplification of the issue, but that’s Mackie. He’s a pretty cut-and-dried type of guy. Now make daddy a sandwich!

Olivia Wilde: ‘You can’t be a good mother unless you really love yourself’

Olivia Wilde

This is Olivia Wilde’s new Revlon campaign called “Love is On.” When I heard about Livvy’s new contract, I was thrilled. She’s a gorgeous lady and a decent actress, but she’s had a terrible run of bad luck with acting projects. The last project I watched her in was Drinking Buddies on Netflix. She played the “cool girl” who guzzled beer and wasn’t looking for a guy to spend the night after hitting it. I want to say Olivia could land better roles, but that’s just me being hopeful.

I do like Olivia. She’s both intelligent and quick witted. Most of the time, she plays the love interest in movies, so she’s not losing out by transitioning to modelling. Playing spokesmodel is a lot less demanding (timewise) than spending months on a film set, so the Revlon gig lets Olivia be a selfless mother and still provide a platform for her new earth-mother brand. Olivia promoted Revlon in Times Square yesterday. She also gave some quotes about makeup and love to the December issue of InStyle:

On winter makeup: “I find that winter and the holidays is a fun time to just play a little bit more with makeup. I think I tend to wear more eye makeup and maybe bolder lip colors in the winter and that’s kind of what’s good about holiday parties–being able to go a little bit over the top. It’s the one time you can wear glitter without being a stripper, and I really enjoy that opportunity. The new Eye Art products are super fun and they’re perfect to pair with a sparkly top. That’s something I think is going to be fun for all of those holiday parties.”

On the “classic red lip”: “I like deep reds. The one problem with lipstick sometimes for me is that it doesn’t stay and I’m constantly wiping it off my forehead or my ear, and I really hate that, so I really like the ColorStay, the Ultimate Suede. There’s good nice, red, poppy colors, like “Boho Chic” is a fun one, and I think you should feel free to wear lip colors, but you really don’t want it to end up everywhere, and I honestly have found it on my forehead and my ear. I have no idea how my own lips get on my own neck. It just doesn’t make sense.”

She’s a huge holiday enthusiast: “Yeah, all of them! I love it. I really indulge throughout the holiday season. It kind of starts with Halloween and it goes ’til March. I really love to cook, and I love to cook holiday meals because I love all the sides. I love cooking Brussels sprouts and yams.”

Changing makeup with the seasons: “Yeah I think I use a thicker moisturizer in the winter because my skin gets really dry and kind of red. I really like the Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream. It’s pretty thick and I find that my skin drinks it up. It definitely makes it a better base for any sort of makeup I put on top of it because if you put makeup on top of dry, cracked skin, it’s not going to look pretty.”

How a woman “in love” looks: “When I see a woman walking down the street and I think, ‘She’s beautiful,’ it’s usually because she seems really confident and self-possessed and really loving herself. She’s not looking for validation from anyone else, and I do think you can’t love anyone else until you love yourself–it just doesn’t work, and then that love does translate to how you look. It radiates from you. And it can be the love of your partner, which obviously has such an amazing effect on how you feel. You can’t eat because you’re so excited…but it’s also love for your child. I find that the deep love that’s introduced to you as a mother makes you feel beauty of a different type, and you walk around the world with a different admiration and appreciation of the world. I will say you just can’t be a good partner, and you can’t be a good mother, and you can’t be a good friend unless you really love yourself, and I think that that is something we learn from life and maturity. I think it’s something that I really enjoy about getting older, is honing in on that a little bit and meditating on it a bit more and understanding the difference between self-obsession and confidence. I think that’s a normal part of growing up, understanding the difference. I think that beauty and style and all that fun stuff is a great way to celebrate that self love.”

[From InStyle]

Olivia has prepared well for this Revlon gig. She has plenty of product names on the tip of her tongue and ready to fire at journalists. Livvy is very funny too. What other cosmetic spokeswoman would say that holidays are “the one time you can wear glitter without being a stripper“? She’s a comedienne, and I bet Livvy used a perfectly deadpan voice to deliver her lines. I want her to talk more about moisturizer. This premature winter is already brutal for soft lady skin.

What do you think about Olivia’s theory that no one can be a good mother before they love themselves? It feels like common sense, but I hear people say it a lot.

Livvy’s baby daddy, Jason Sudeikis, stopped by to visit David Letterman earlier this week. Jason says he almost missed the birth of Otis Alexander because he went out to grab tacos. Then he stopped at a bar. After a few shots, Jason noticed a missed call, which was from a frantic Livvy. Was he joking? He does that a lot. Here’s a clip for the curious.
