James Gunn says the Superman sequel will focus equally on Lex Luthor

After a prolonged period of comic book movie fatigue, James Gunn’s Superman came out in theaters back on July 11. Prior to its release, there was a lot of both skepticism and hope that Gunn could successfully reboot the DC franchise after a long, uneven attempt to compete with the Marvel movies. (I really didn’t like either cut of The Justice League, sorry not sorry.)

Gunn’s gambit paid off, and as of September 2025, Superman has made more than $614 million globally. A follow-up movie, titled Man of Tomorrow, is already in the works with an April 2026 production start date and a targeted July 9, 2027 release date. Gunn appeared on Howard Stern’s show recently to share some more details about MoT. According to Gunn, the next movie will have a heavy focus on Superman and his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor working together. In fact, it will be just “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”

Some more intel on James Gunn‘s Superman follow-up (not sequel), Man of Tomorrow. The Superman director and DC Studio Co-Boss told Howard Stern recently that the next movie is “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.”

“It’s more complicated than that,” said Gunn, “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”

Gunn immediately went into developing the next DC movie involving Superman in the wake of his movie’s $614M-plus global success. Previously, it was reported that it would be more about the new characters introduced in his Superman, i.e. Green Lantern, Hawk Girl, etc. Superman did so well for Warner Bros, that they were able to push New Line’s Mortal Kombat II to mid-May next year as potential tentpole; the studio already reportedly in the black this year in regards to ROI, sources tell Deadline, before Paul Thomas Anderson’s Leonardo DiCaprio poltical action pic One Battle After Another opens.

“Milly Alcock, who plays Supergirl, might be the best bit of casting I think I’ve ever done in my entire life,” said Gunn.

In talking about the HBO series Lanterns, Stern told Gunn he’s always believed that Green Lantern could beat up Superman.

Gunn agreed: “Absolutely, he’s pretty powerful.”

[From Deadline]

I don’t know about y’all, but all I got from this was that we are in for a Superman/Lex buddy comedy! Just kidding. Superman and Lex Luthor have teamed up in the comics before, so the precedent is there, but they always remain arch-enemies. I do look forward to more Nicholas Hoult. He was a really great Lex Luthor, and I’m glad he’s getting his flowers. Mr. Rosie and I saw Superman in theaters. I liked it a lot more than I expected to. A big part of that was Hoult’s portrayal of Luthor. So many people, myself included, were lukewarm about Hoult’s casting when it was announced but he did such a great job with the role that I’m glad to stand corrected.

As for the rest of Man of Tomorrow’s potential plot, the common consensus among fans regarding the identity of its big bad is that it’s Brainiac, an alien cyborg that’s obsessed with collecting all of the universe’s knowledge. He’s widely considered to be one of Superman’s biggest enemies. This feels plausible. I’m also intrigued to see how season 2 of Peacemaker fits into all of this. I don’t know if Gunn is going to fully save the DCU movies, but I appreciate that he’s giving it his best effort.

David Corenswet Fashion Nicholas Hoult Rachel Brosnahan

Rachel Brosnahan wore a lovely Ralph Lauren to the LA ‘Superman’ premiere

In the past week, I’ve actually gotten a sense of minor panic from the Superman team at Warner Bros. The panic is about Nicholas Hoult and how everyone is thirsting over Blonde Hoult and his incredible fashion. Hoult was in New York last week for some early Superman promotion – he plays Lex Luthor in the film – and every time he stepped outside, he made news for his hair, his fashion, his magnificent Prada bag, and his fun, sexy energy. It’s truly a Hot Hoult Summer. So much so, the Superman team is like… wait, people are lusting over Lex Luthor?? What about David Corenswet, our SUPERMAN?

I bring this up because I was looking through the photos of the big LA premiere of Superman, it was almost as if photographers were given strict orders to NOT lovingly photograph Hot Blonde Hoult. He also must have been pushed off the red carpet quickly, because there really aren’t tons of photos of him. They’re trying to make Hot Corenswet Summer happen instead! Boooooo.

Honestly, though, I have no issue with Corenswet and I like his facial hair these days too. The beard makes him look less babyfaced, which definitely helps. His three-piece suit was much better than Hoult’s leather pants and aviator sunglasses. They really didn’t like that Hoult was becoming the people’s princess, damn. They made him dim his light!

Rachel Brosnahan looked great too – she wore Ralph Lauren. I’m not wild about the side cutouts which are supposed to be an optical illusion creating a more snatched waist. But the color is lovely and she and David look nice together. David Corenswet also brought his wife, Julia Best Warner (I had no idea that he is married).

James Gunn confirms that Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy

The casting for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has been a whole ass event. Casting their Clark Kent and Lois Lane was so much a thing that there were even articles written about the finalists. There’s a lot of pressure on this movie, which stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, to help reinvigorate DC Studios’ struggling franchise. Written and directed by Gunn, it’s supposed to be the first film released under his new, rebooted DC Universe. It’s been called a “workplace origin story” that will explore Superman’s heritage by both his Kryptonian birth parents and his adoptive parents in Kansas. A few weeks ago, news leaked that Nicholas Hoult was cast as villain Lex Luthor. Earlier this week, Gunn finally confirmed the rumors via a post on Threads.

James Gunn took a moment to confirm that Nicholas Hoult will, in fact, be playing Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy and gave a bit of insight into what fans can expect from his take on the villain. The co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios posted a photo of him and Hoult on Threads and shared that the two had dinner to celebrate the official casting.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Gunn wrote. “We went out to dinner last night to celebrate & discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. ‘But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?’ Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain.”

News broke in November that Hoult was in talks to portray the classic villain in Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, which will follow the Man of Steel as he balances his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

Superman: Legacy is expected to hit theaters July 11, 2025.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

Look, I’m a giant nerd and although I may grumble, I generally can’t resist anything superhero-related. But even I’m like, “Do we really need another Superman movie?” He’s like the most overdone superhero outside of Batman at this point. However, I also said that about the Robert Pattinson Batman movie and ended up really enjoying it, despite it being 75 hours long. (Seriously, if it’s not a Lord of the Rings, it does not need to be more than 120 minutes, TOPS. You can tell good stories in under two hours!)

Anyway, I am very intrigued by this Nicholas Hoult casting. I mean, it’s less random than when Jesse Eisenberg played Lex, so there’s that. I grew up with two different Lex Luthors: John Shea in Lois and Clark and Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville. They’re always the ones I see in my mind. When I picture Hoult and ‘superhero,’ I can’t help but picture him as Beast from X-Men. I like Hoult, though, so I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he can do with the role. Honestly, I don’t know whether or not I even want to invest more hours of my life on another DCU movie. They’ve been hit or miss for me, but mostly miss.

Nicholas Hoult is ‘obsessed with baking’ & ‘enjoys cooking’ when he’s not working

Nicholas Hoult ended up being one of the best-looking and most talented actors of his generation, right? What’s crazy is that he also seems like a genuinely nice and low-key guy. He’s been with Bryana Holly for years and they have a four-year-old son together. We rarely see or hear anything about Hoult and his life, and he really doesn’t do much press for his projects either. Well, Hoult is currently promoting The Menu, where he plays a very rich foodie, the kind of guy who goes to crazy-expensive restaurants and takes photos of his food. Talking about food is apparently the gateway to getting Hoult to talk about his personal life. Some highlights from People:

He’s not a foodie: “I’m a trash can, I eat anything and everything. (I’m) not picky at all. Although I think within the last 12 hours, I have become obsessed with baking.” Hoult, who splits his time between London (where he’s finishing up filming season 3 of Hulu’s The Great) and Los Angeles, has found comfort in the kitchen, even whipping up “a Japanese sweet bread and a cinnamon crunch loaf” in the same day.

He does love to cook: “I do quite enjoy cooking when I’m not working. When I’m working, I just don’t cook at all basically, and then when I get time off I like to putter around in the kitchen. I’m not very good, but I like to do it.”

He cooks for his 4-year-old son with model Bryana Holly. “You know what? You get honest, instant feedback from a 4-year-old. He will turn straight around, and he’s like, ‘This isn’t very good, Dad.’ But then when you do get it right and you cook something great, you get a big thumbs-up. It’s a great age.”

He doesn’t photograph his food: “Do you ever really look back at those (food) photos? It’s like when people spend like 10 minutes recording at a concert, and you’re like, ‘Really? You’re actually going to watch that whole thing back with the terrible sound on of your phone?’ Probably not, right?”

[From People]

I like him so much more now that I know he cooks and bakes. I think bakers are exceptional people – it takes patience, a scientific mind and kindness to be a good baker. I bet he’s a good partner and a great father. Let me have this!!

Anya Taylor-Joy has also been talking about food and cooking during promotion – she told Page Six that she can barely boil water and cooking “doesn’t really interest me…I’m not going to lie to you. I feel like we have delivery, we have takeout.” I can cook, but I do get a lot of takeout as well, so I feel her on that.

Anya Taylor Joy in Dior at ‘The Menu’ NYC premiere: stunning or overworked?

Here are some photos from the big New York premiere of The Menu, starring Anya Taylor Joy, Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult. Honestly, I thought the movie looked interesting and cool, but Ralph’s interviews are kind of ruining my old opinions about him. It might seem inconsequential because I’m sure the kids don’t care about Fiennes, but he’s the lead of the film!! His name comes before Anya’s name on all of the promotional materials! Plus, it continues to be disconcerting to see Fiennes – a once-delicately beautiful man – turn up at premieres looking like a glum mid-level banker.

As for fashion, Anya repped her Dior contract and wore this Dior cocktail dress, I guess we’re calling it. Several designers have been doing these stiff crinoline skirts and I loathe the trend/throwback. That being said, it feels “very Dior,” and this is admittedly one of the better versions of the trend. Anya definitely pulls off some interesting stuff. I would have probably removed the gloves – the different patterns of the gloves and the lace on the dress is throwing me off.

If you look closely at Hoult, you can see that he’s wearing three layers – a gorgeous greige topcoat over a beige-and-silver button-down, over some kind of sheer white tank or tee. It’s amazing. Just a little pizzazz. I love that his trousers are a bit flared too. He’s SO stylish.

Anya Taylor Joy in McQueen at ‘The Menu’ UK premiere: lovely or meh?

The Menu looked like one of the craziest horror-dramas of the season and I was looking forward to eventually seeing it, but then Ralph Fiennes doubled-down on his JK Rowling bullsh-t so I’m wondering if I should skip it. For what it’s worth, Fiennes skipped the UK premiere last night and it looks like the producers are just going to sell the movie on the backs of Anya Taylor Joy and Nicholas Hoult. Fair enough! Take my money!

Anya and Hoult looked kind of amazing together – I know they have relationships with other people, and Hoult has a whole child with his partner, but damn, they’re really pretty together. Tall, beautiful people with cheekbones. Mmm. Hoult wore a fantastic suit by Tom Ford, with a lush velvet dinner jacket, basically. The dark purple looks great, and I love that Tom Ford still dresses Hoult for big premieres and red carpets (they worked together on A Single Man). Meanwhile, Anya wore Alexander McQueen. She has a Dior contract and I’m so used to seeing her in (some of the better) Dior looks, so this threw me for a loop. The color is great and I don’t hate the idea of a leather/vinyl dress, but the cut on this dress is horrible. The gloves… well, gloves are “in” right now. Eh. Anyway, pretty people looking pretty.

Is 25-year-old Jennifer Lawrence dating 47-year-old Darren Aronofsky?

wenn23573833

Back in January, Jennifer Lawrence was confirmed for a role in Darren Aronofsky’s next film, which is still untitled. The film is about “a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.” Aronofsky has written the script and he will direct it too. The film is either filming already, or it will be soon. Aronofsky was famously Rachel Weisz’s partner and baby-daddy for years, until she dumped him and married Daniel Craig. He then began seeing a Canadian woman named Brandi-Ann Milbradt, although I think that ended a few years back, maybe? I can’t find anything about her recently. And Jennifer Lawrence has been single-ish since her breakup with Chris Martin, although I think it’s more than possible that she went on some dates with Aziz Ansari. So… two single people, on a film set. What could go wrong?

Jennifer Lawrence is Darren Araonofsky’s leading lady – in more ways than one! A source tells In Touch that J-Law, 25, is secretly dating the 47-year-old director, an Oscar nominee who has a son with his ex Rachel Weisz.

“It started when they were in early discussions about the project. They began flirting, and soon they were hooking up. Now it’s getting serious,” says the source, adding that everyone on the set of the film (which is currently untitled) is buzzing about the romance.

“Jennifer and Darren think they’re being sneaky, but it’s all anyone can talk about!”

[From In Touch Weekly, print edition]

Even though it’s In Touch, it would not surprise me if this was true. Aronofsky has a thing for his leading ladies, and there were always rumors that even while he was with Rachel Weisz, he had a thing with at least one other actress. I have no idea if that’s true, let me be clear. But there were always whispers. As for Jennifer… I feel like she settles sometimes? Not with Nicholas Hoult, obviously, because he’s adorable and I think they genuinely loved each other. But I think J-Law gets lonely and she just goes for whomever is available. Oh, and it also wouldn’t surprise me if 25-year-old J-Law had a thing with a 47-year-old director. I’m honestly surprised that hasn’t happened already.

Here are some photos of J-Law out and about in NYC this week. You know who else lives in NYC? Darren Aronofsky! DUN DUN DUN.
