Lance Bass’s CW pilot was canceled in 2006 after he came out

Lance Bass came out as gay in 2006. He did it via a People magazine cover story a la Ellen DeGeneres’ Time cover. That was still in the early days of gossip blogs, but if I remember correctly, there weren’t really many people on the Internet – at least in the corners that I frequented – who were surprised or scandalized by the news. I’m not saying that this meant that he wasn’t subjected to unacceptable homophobia in the form of snide jokes, etc al. He, as well as so many other members of the LGBTQ community at the time, was an easy target back then. Sigh.

While some of us common folk weren’t phased, the same couldn’t be said for Hollywood executives. Sadly, Lance’s career took a hit as a result of him living his truth. That same year, Lance was about to shoot a pilot for a new CW show. After he came out, he was told that it was being canceled because executives thought that people had to ”believe that [he was] straight to play a straight character.”

Lance Bass is reflecting on how coming out led to the cancellation of a CW pilot he was set to star in. The singer, 45, opened up about experiencing some professional drawbacks after publicly revealing his sexuality, noting that he “lost everything” after he shared his story.

“It was a crazy scary situation because all the examples I’ve ever had of anyone coming out, especially in entertainment, was that it’s a career killer,” Bass revealed during the Tuesday, December 3, episode of the “Politickin‘” podcast.

He told hosts Gavin Newsom, Marshawn Lynch and Doug Hendrickson, “The career definitely changed, and they were right about that. Like, it was definitely a career killer.”

Though Bass had a few acting gigs during his NSYNC days – including a guest-starring role on a episode of 7th Heaven in 2000 and a starring role in the 2001 romantic comedy, On the Line – the Finding Prince Charming host was looking to further his career after the boy band went on hiatus in 2002.

“I had a sitcom, you know, with The CW at the time,” he said. “We were about to shoot the pilot and this came out and they were like, ‘We can’t do the show anymore. Like, they have to believe that you’re straight to play a straight character.’”

Bass went on to share that the axed series was just the beginning of having a difficult time finding work in the industry after coming out.

“Every casting director I knew, they’re like, ‘Lance, we can’t cast you because they can’t look past … You’re too famous for being gay now that they can’t look at you as anything other than that,’” he explained, noting that he had to “completely just restart and rebrand” once “everything kind of fell off.”

Despite experiencing hardships in Hollywood during his career, Bass said he has since worked with some of those same casting directors, who called their decision to not work with him earlier “really dumb.”

He added, “They’ve actually cast me a lot of things since, which is really funny and ironic. But you know, I never hold grudges at all. I’m very understanding. I get it. Business is business is business. It sucks, but I never can hold grudges.”

[From Us Weekly]

”Business is business.” I hate when people give that excuse. At the end of the day, Lance lost a pilot and subsequent series due to homophobia. I distinctly remember an interview with Rupert Evertt after My Best Friend’s Wedding was released in which he talked about how coming out stalled his career and left him type cast in roles as the gay best friend. I know that progress can be painstakingly slow, but in this regard, we’ve definitely come a long way over the last two decades (even if it’s not far enough). It’s also wild that Lance has worked with the same casting directors in the decades since. I would have trouble doing so and not being bitter about it, so he’s a way better person than I am.

Lance Bass on coming out in ’06 vs. today: this younger generation is so accepting

More celebrities are open and out than ever before, which is so much different than even fifteen years ago. Lance Bass has a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment. Lance said if he would were to come out today versus when he did in 2006, things would have been different because this generation is more accepting. Lance went on to say that he has known he was gay since he was five. His managers encouraged him to stay in the closet while he was in NSYNC stating that his fans didn’t want to know about his private life. Lance has been married to Michael Turchin since 2014 and they welcomed twin boys in October. Below are a few more highlights from his interview with Yahoo!:

“Being in the entertainment industry, you get told certain things and they allude to certain things. No one ever flat-out said, ‘Listen, if you’re gay, you can’t do this,” Bass says. “But they would [say] things like, ‘You know, if you have a girlfriend, you can’t really talk about them’ and ‘Remember your audience, your fans out there. They don’t want to really know about your personal life.’ So that always to me was kind of a backhanded, like, ‘Look, we know you’re gay, keep it a secret, kid.’”

“Being in a boy band, I got called gay every single day that I was in the band. And it wasn’t because they actually thought I was gay,” Bass says. “It’s just because I was in a boy band. All of us got that. I definitely wasn’t singled out. I think all of us got it equally.”

“No one cares, you know? Everyone’s just like, OK, that’s just normal,” Bass says. “My niece and nephews, they were really little when I came out. I remember the first thing that they said … they didn’t understand it, they were like, ‘Why is this a big deal?’ [They] could not comprehend why people cared about us being gay and why it would be so big you put you on the cover of People. It really encouraged me to know that this younger generation is so accepting and they just, they look at it as kids. They don’t know it [as] any different. It’s just the reality of life for them.”

[From Yahoo!]

I know it seems like the younger generation is much more accepting, however there are way too many stories of queer kids committing suicide because of bullying. We still have so much room for improvement. I have spent the last few months watching Lil Nas X fight trolls and other celebrities because they feel offended about him being unapologetically queer. While the younger generation may be more open, the artists are also more bold and give zero f*cks about what people think.

I love that Lance is talking about his journey and I hope he knows fans would have accepted him either way, I know I would have. I appreciate celebrities being open about their sexuality because it helps those looking for examples. My favorite thing these last two weeks was Kal Penn coming out. I know his admission will help and encourage queer kids. Anyways, I applaud the boldness of millennials and Gen Z. I definitely will continue to support and cheer them on from my Gen X corner.

Ah, Coachella time is upon us again. Coachella is actually one of my least favorite events to cover, just because A) trendy faux-hipsters, B) drugs and C) terrible casual fashion. Bedhead even discussed how a lot of companies are paying starlets/actresses/reality stars to be photographed at Coachella wearing their stuff. Tedious. I maybe (maybe!) would have been into this when I was 19 years old, but I do think it’s sad for 40-somethings to still do the Coachella thing year after year. Speaking of sad, Lindsay Lohan was there. Because… sobriety. I’m just covering everything in a big photo post from this weekend’s activities – Bedhead and I will have more coverage throughout the week, I’m sure.

Here’s Zoe Kravitz and her “new boyfriend” Noah Becker. When exactly did that happen? I miss Penn Badgley.

Selena Gomez is now in the clutches of Kylie and Kendall Jenner. How does that make you feel? It makes me sad for Selena. All three girls look so ridiculous.

Lance Bass Is Engaged, Y’all

lance bass fiance michael turchin

Lance Bass is engaged to be married to Michael Turchin, who looks like some hot combination of Adrien Brody and someone hotter than Adrien Brody. Us Weekly says they have the exclusive details, so here they are:

Dating since December 2011, the couple got engaged in New Orleans after Bass proposed to the aspiring actor and model with a black diamond band. He even texted his future husband’s parents to ask for their permission first.

“They’re such a great couple, everyone is so happy for them,” another source tells Us. “Their friends and family are thrilled.”

He texted permission? LOL. Oh, Lance. WTF did he text? “Hey u guise it’s me Lance, can I marry your son, Y/N? Plz say yes. :) ttyl!!” It’s such an outdated useless tradition to ask for someones’ hand in marriage from their parents, but I know that people still do it. So if you’re gonna do it, do it right. Come on, Lance. A text? Really?

Anyway, after his crappy *NSYNC reunion at the VMAs, he tweeted something that I thought was very sweet:

For the first time ever I got to perform w *NSYNC as an out entertainer and was thinking of this man.

That’s nice. And I mean that with 0% sarcasm.

Yo Timberlake, I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to get back together with *NSYNC for the 2013 MTV Music Video Awards, but do you think you could have given them maybe more than one minute? Yes, the rumors of a reunion were true. It was so exciting to see *NSYNC back together — even Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga were rocking out in the audience — but if you blinked, you missed it.

Can’t find a good quality video yet, and hopefully by the time you watch this it’s still up.

I still screeched like a little girl, I just wished they could have at least done a whole song.
