Rami Malek: It’s harder to talk to new people in LA than it is in New York

rami1

I really do listen when you guys request more coverage (or to start covering) new or interesting dudes. I’m still looking for an excuse to write more about Matthias Schoenaerts, who is my latest major crush (and who never gets pap’d). I’d also love to write about Aidan Turner or James Norton, but honestly, we rarely get photos of those guys and there are never any stories about them. Seriously! We’ve had requests for MOAR Rami Malek, and more general love for Mr. Robot over the past year. The first season of Mr. Robot was dark and weird and disturbing, and many believe the show is one of the most interesting things on TV these days, and that Rami Malek, the star, is the Next Big Thing.

One of Rami’s biggest fans is Robert Downey Jr. RDJ has name-checked Rami in a few interviews, and RDJ also cited Mr. Robot as one of his favorite TV shows. So guess who interviewed Rami for Interview Magazine? RDJ, of course! Mr. Robot Season 2 just started last night, that’s why Rami is chatting. You can read the full piece here. While it’s a nice read, there’s not a lot of noteworthy stuff here. Malek seems like a nice guy, but he also seems to be living the job, or he just plays his personal life very close to the vest. Some highlights:

On RDJ visiting the set of Mr. Robot: “That was amazing. You turned me into a hero when you came to set. I’m not kidding. They were like, “You know him?” “How do you know him?” I knew it was very cool to know you, but the world started paying me more attention on that day on set. Maybe I elaborated on our relationship too much and started fantasizing it was more than it actually was. No, I just told them how close we were and that we hang out, we celebrate holidays together, we watch movies together, all of which is true!”

He’s an honorary New Yorker now:
“I’ve always felt like I belong there. Growing up [in L.A.] and having a family here was something that I, of course, adored because I was surrounded with that unit. But from the first time I went over there, I felt connected to the way things move, the pace, the ability to strike up a conversation with anybody. I know that people often say it’s hard to talk to people in New York. I think it’s harder sometimes in L.A. But I like the neighborhood vibe, I like getting on the train and going anywhere with that type of speed, having everything at my disposal. The culture, the pace, all of it. I like feeling like I’m in that concrete jungle.”

Whether he’ll be typecast because of Mr. Robot: “It’s something that I think about daily. I don’t want people to look back and think, “This character was entirely in his wheelhouse, and he’s probably going to end up playing a bunch of paranoid guys who have conspiracy theories.” Which could easily happen! I’ve had my fair share of 1970s conspiracy movies delivered over. I would love to turn around and do something polar opposite, and that might actually be happening soon. If the right people are involved and the script is just as powerful, I’d like to make some even crazier choices.”

[From Interview Magazine]

True story: I really did try to get into Mr. Robot during the first season but I just couldn’t. It was too dark and I kept losing track of the evil characters. Maybe I’ll give it another shot, because there are some hardcore devotees. As for Rami being typecast… one of my favorite pieces of trivia about him is that he was in both of the Night At the Museum movies. And he was in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. He won’t be typecast!

Rami also has a new profile in GQ – go here to read.

13 Most Toxic Relationships in Reality TV History

Reality TV shows feature a lot of couples.

They make up the bulk of the action that comes from these programs, on a typical basis.

Some of the relationships are just plain toxic, making us question why they even tried in the first place.

We’ve compiled a gallery of some of the most toxic reality TV relationships below:

1. Sammi and Ronnie – Jersey Shore

Sammi and ronnie jersey shore
These two were constantly fighting. Their relationship has been on and off like a light switch, but there’s word that the two of them are back together… AGAIN!

2. Spencer and Heidi – The Hills

Spencer and heidi the hills
Remember when Heidi was a great character on The Hills before Spencer Pratt came around? He turned her against her BFF and made it clear that she would abide by everything he said. They constantly bickered, but they’re still together.

3. Rachel and Brendan – Big Brother

Rachel and brendan big brother
It was love at first sight for these two, but things changed out of the house when Brendan sent pics of his nether regions to another chick. They’re now married, but we don’t know just how toxic they still are.

4. Kailyn and Javi – Teen Mom 2

Kailyn and javi teen mom 2
These two just always seemed to be arguing about something, so it came as no surprise that they finally parted ways.

5. Dustin and Heather – The Real World

Dustin and heather the real world
Dustin and Heather seemed like the perfect couple on The Real World, but things took a crazy turn when Dustin just couldn’t stop lying to Heather. They reunited shortly after the show concluded, but they’re apart right now.

6. Marcus and Lacy – Bachelor In Paradise

Marcus and lacy bachelor in paradise
Marcus and Lacy seemed like the perfect couple, but that was far from the case and it came out that their relationship turned toxic shortly after the cameras stopped rolling. They are no longer a thing.

Sir Mix-a-Lot defends Blake Lively’s right to be proud of her ‘Oakland booty’

It’s been two days since Blake Lively posted this ^^ Instagram about her “L.A. face with an Oakland booty.” And for what it’s worth, she hasn’t taken down the Instagram post. Perhaps because she didn’t and doesn’t seen anything wrong with a Becky quoting a Sir Mix-a-Lot song. The “LA face with an Oakland booty” is a lyric from Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” a song that has an amazing shelf-life, right? Well, someone FINALLY asked Sir Mix-a-Lot what he thought about Blake quoting his song and claiming that she too has an “Oakland booty.”

I understand what he’s saying about Blake perhaps making a statement of embracing her curves and how it’s all body positive and la de da, but there IS a racial element to it, right? We’re not just imagining that. For a white woman to publicly proclaim that she has an “Oakland booty” is questionable at best. But anyway, what is Sir Mix-a-Lot going to say? Of course he likes her booty.

Comic-Con: Harrison Ford surprised the ‘Star Wars’ panel, everybody cried

I kind of feel sorry for all of the other studios, films and TV shows that were trying to get attention at this year’s Comic-Con, because Star Wars really went all out. People were crying. People were freaking out. No one could hide their glee. And props to JJ Abrams for bringing everyone out for Comic-Con – seriously, I think every major cast member of Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out. Even (dun dun dun) Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. It was amazing! This was Harrison’s first time at Comic-Con and his first big public appearance since his plane crash in March. All of the joy and tears were mostly for Harrison, if we’re being honest. To see a grizzled old Han Solo up there with grizzled Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher… OMG. Harrison made jokes (he told the crowd he “walked here”) and explained why he decided to come back to the beloved franchise:

“It should’ve felt ridiculous. [The first movie] was 30 years ago, and I sort of grew up. And yet here I was doing something I did so long ago and I will tell you that it felt great… I wasn’t so sure it would be but the company was the right company, the director was the right director. Larry [Kasdan] wrote us a wonderful story and I was proud and grateful to once again be involved. The original Star Wars that I was a part of really was the beginning of my working life and I was very, very grateful for the opportunity that I had in that film and for the success of that film. It was great to be back… [I didn’t expect this to] come back to bless me rather than haunt me. I was very grateful when I read the script because I read something that I thought was really remarkable, really well written and with some very intriguing developments.”

After the panel, JJ and the cast invited everyone to a big surprise concert of Star Wars music performed by the San Diego Symphony. Disney really spent a lot of money on this year’s Comic-Con, right?

When I say that every major cast member was there, I really mean it. These are the cast members who came out, in addition to Harrison, Carrie and Mark: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Gwendoline Christie. We also found out that Driver and Christie are definitely playing bad guys…? And they released this new “behind the scenes” video that gave me chills.

Charles Dance: Peter Dinklage ‘must be the envy of every dwarf actor’

wenn21936609 (1)

Charles Dance is just one of those English actors. He works constantly. He shows up in TV shows and movies all the time and you’ve probably seen him in a million different things before you ever learned his name. He’s always been a great character actor, and I think he’s probably worked non-stop since he got a bit older. It’s sort of insane – he’s 68 years old and his IMDB page is crazy-long. Most Americans first put a name to his face when he took on the role of Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. And much like Sean Bean and Pedro Pascal, Charles Dance welcomes GoT discussions and he seems to have really enjoyed his part in such a huge, cultural-phenomenon show. Charles is also doing press for his supporting part in The Imitation Game, but he’s spent most of his time talking about GoT. That’s what happens when a GoT person does press in America! We’re GoT-obsessed! You can read Dance’s full Daily Beast interview here – it’s a really interesting piece and he’s funny and rather sassy. He talks a bit about TIG, but the most interesting parts are about GoT.

Why he plays villains: “When you look at this face, it’s quite patrician the way it’s put together, and I have a demeanor that’s rather austere. So, interesting villain characters have come along and any actor will tell you that a villainous character is much more fun to play than a good guy.”

A possible GoT movie: “There’s talk of eventually trying to do a feature film, but I don’t know which of the storylines. There’s so much to cram into a film.”

On Alan Turing’s pardon: “There is an irony in that. Pardoned for what? Cracking the Enigma Code? The government should be asking the relatives of Alan Turing to pardon them for treating him so appallingly! It’s medieval, and disgusting. There are a few mad people around today who think you can ‘cure’ people of their sexuality, too.”

The Leveson Inquiry, being hacked by the British tabloids: “I had a call from the police who said, ‘Did you know that your number came up?’ and it made sense, because certain things would appear in papers and I’d think, ‘How the f–k did they know that?’”

His role in the cult favorite Aliens 3: “I think Alien 3 was a better film than Aliens, to be frank.”

The craziest thing he did for GoT was skin a real deer: “So, this butcher arrived with a dead animal and they gave me a little room to work in, gave me a sharp knife, and showed me how to skin it and spill the guts into a bucket. The next day, they gave me another dead animal, and we shot it. It was a bloody good time, but it took me two days to get the smell off my hands.”

Working with Peter Dinklage: “One of the biggest joys was working with Peter Dinklage. He’s the sweetest man, and a phenomenal actor. He must be the envy of every dwarf actor in the world because those parts don’t come along too often. He’s also extremely handsome. If you look at his head, it’s like Michelangelo’s David. And he’s such a great guy, too. I spent a lot of time apologizing to Peter because we play scenes where I treat him like sh-t, calling him a ‘lecherous little stump’ and saying I wanted to ‘carry you out to sea and let the waves take you away.’”

[From The Daily Beast]

I’ve read interviews with Dance before where he’s praised the hell out of Dinklage too, so I think that’s for real – Dance has a lot of love for Dinklage. But I do worry about Dance saying “He must be the envy of every dwarf actor…” Dinklage has said in the past that he doesn’t like the D-word and that many in the community think “dwarf” is a pejorative. I don’t know… is it rude to call Dinklage a “dwarf”?

Dance also went flawlessly into character, analyzing Tywin’s feelings for his children and how much Tywin must have secretly adored Tyrion all along. You can tell Dance really loved playing that character. It’s kind of cool.

Idris Elba’s ‘Luther’ is going to be Americanized & it won’t star Idris Elba

luther

I watched the Daniel Craig-Rooney Mara version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo again over the weekend. I enjoy that version and I hadn’t seen it in a while, but I kept getting confused because I remembered so much of the Noomi Rapace-as-Lisbeth films (I think I’m going to watch those again this weekend). So, I ended up spending too much time this weekend about remakes and Americanizing films and TV shows that were originally good/better in another language or in another culture. This is has been happening more and more – Fox already canceled Gracepoint, the Americanized version of the UK hit Broadchurch. And now Fox is going to do an Americanized remake of the popular UK show Luther. Luther was one of Idris Elba’s most celebrated projects – he’s won awards for playing the troubled detective and it’s one of his best-known roles. And Idris is on board this Americanized project… as a producer. They’re probably going to get another actor to play Luther, even though Idris can do a flawless American accent.

One of the most acclaimed British series of the last decade, BBC crime drama Luther, is getting a U.S. remake. Fox has given a rich put pilot commitment with a seven-figure penalty to the adaptation, which will be written/executive produced by the original series’ creator Neil Cross. The British series’ star, Idris Elba, is on board as executive producer. The project hails from 20th Century Fox TV, studio-based Chernin Entertainment and BBC Worldwide Prods. Also executive producing are the Chernin company’s Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope and BBC Worldwide Prods’ Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner.

Luther, which ran on BBC for three seasons, centered on John Luther (Elba), a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can’t always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions. While opting to end the original series after a three-season, 14-episode run, Cross has left the door open for a Luther movie starring Elba. The original Luther series, which aired in the U.S. on BBC America, earned eight Emmy nominations for best miniseries, best actor (Elba), and best writing/directing.

Fox has another drama about a brilliant, unorthodox detective based on a European property coming up in midseason, series Backstrom, an adaptation of Leif G. W. Persson’s books. Remaking acclaimed British drama series by U.S. networks has proven tricky. Neither NBC’s Prime Suspect nor Fox’s Gracepoint — a U.S. version of ITV’s Broadchurch, which, like Luther, was adapted by original creator Chris Chibnall — have been able to gain much traction.

[From Deadline]

Is this stupid? Or do people think Americans are too stupid to, like, watch BBC America or PBS Masterpiece? I’ll admit, I never got into Luther, but that was mostly because it was so dark, not because it was “too British” or whatever. And NBC’s attempt to Americanize Prime Suspect was just sad. I still don’t believe that the Americanized version of The Killing was anything other than a poorly written, dumbed-down catastrophe. But… there are some shows that end up crossing the pond and becoming hits. Think… The Office. Or Elementary, which started out as a version of Sherlock. I’ll admit it, I LOVE Elementary – it’s one of the better procedurals on TV these days. That being said, I think cop shows have a difficult journey in “remake” attempts.

So, would you watch an Americanized Luther? Eh… it would depend on who they cast as Luther. And I really don’t understand why American TV puppet masters can’t simply invest in original American stories.

And maybe this was just an excuse to post photos of Idris Elba. Shhh….baby, don’t speak.
