Rami Malek: It’s harder to talk to new people in LA than it is in New York

rami1

I really do listen when you guys request more coverage (or to start covering) new or interesting dudes. I’m still looking for an excuse to write more about Matthias Schoenaerts, who is my latest major crush (and who never gets pap’d). I’d also love to write about Aidan Turner or James Norton, but honestly, we rarely get photos of those guys and there are never any stories about them. Seriously! We’ve had requests for MOAR Rami Malek, and more general love for Mr. Robot over the past year. The first season of Mr. Robot was dark and weird and disturbing, and many believe the show is one of the most interesting things on TV these days, and that Rami Malek, the star, is the Next Big Thing.

One of Rami’s biggest fans is Robert Downey Jr. RDJ has name-checked Rami in a few interviews, and RDJ also cited Mr. Robot as one of his favorite TV shows. So guess who interviewed Rami for Interview Magazine? RDJ, of course! Mr. Robot Season 2 just started last night, that’s why Rami is chatting. You can read the full piece here. While it’s a nice read, there’s not a lot of noteworthy stuff here. Malek seems like a nice guy, but he also seems to be living the job, or he just plays his personal life very close to the vest. Some highlights:

On RDJ visiting the set of Mr. Robot: “That was amazing. You turned me into a hero when you came to set. I’m not kidding. They were like, “You know him?” “How do you know him?” I knew it was very cool to know you, but the world started paying me more attention on that day on set. Maybe I elaborated on our relationship too much and started fantasizing it was more than it actually was. No, I just told them how close we were and that we hang out, we celebrate holidays together, we watch movies together, all of which is true!”

He’s an honorary New Yorker now:
“I’ve always felt like I belong there. Growing up [in L.A.] and having a family here was something that I, of course, adored because I was surrounded with that unit. But from the first time I went over there, I felt connected to the way things move, the pace, the ability to strike up a conversation with anybody. I know that people often say it’s hard to talk to people in New York. I think it’s harder sometimes in L.A. But I like the neighborhood vibe, I like getting on the train and going anywhere with that type of speed, having everything at my disposal. The culture, the pace, all of it. I like feeling like I’m in that concrete jungle.”

Whether he’ll be typecast because of Mr. Robot: “It’s something that I think about daily. I don’t want people to look back and think, “This character was entirely in his wheelhouse, and he’s probably going to end up playing a bunch of paranoid guys who have conspiracy theories.” Which could easily happen! I’ve had my fair share of 1970s conspiracy movies delivered over. I would love to turn around and do something polar opposite, and that might actually be happening soon. If the right people are involved and the script is just as powerful, I’d like to make some even crazier choices.”

[From Interview Magazine]

True story: I really did try to get into Mr. Robot during the first season but I just couldn’t. It was too dark and I kept losing track of the evil characters. Maybe I’ll give it another shot, because there are some hardcore devotees. As for Rami being typecast… one of my favorite pieces of trivia about him is that he was in both of the Night At the Museum movies. And he was in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. He won’t be typecast!

Rami also has a new profile in GQ – go here to read.

Jennifer Aniston covers InStyle, lies about when she got with Justin Theroux

aniston instyle

Even though I’m letting the Cake wash over me, I still kind of wonder if Jennifer Aniston is playing one part of her Oscar campaign correctly: she really seems to be answering too many questions about the tabloids, her tabloid persona and “the lies.” While Aniston has always seemed a little too eager to engage in that side of the gossip industry, I wonder if that’s the right play for her Oscar campaign. Isn’t the end result that she looks like the same old tabloid queen, the all-gossip-no-substance Miss Lonelyhearts? Shouldn’t she shut those conversations down in favor of discussing her work, how she wants to be a dramatic actress, etc? So, Aniston covers the new issue of InStyle, and guess what she talks about? The tabloids. Whether or not she’s pregnant. Ugh. Some highlights:

On the tabloids: “I realize they need to sell magazines, but it’s really getting old. What kills me is when friends send me pictures they’ve taken at a newsstand. One magazine says, ‘Desperate and alone,’ and the other one says, ‘She’s eloped!’ I mean, at least consult. Don’t make yourself look like an idiot. I’m going to be 50 and they’re still gonna be saying, ‘She’s pregnant!’”

If she could write her own tabloid headline, what would it be? “Oh, that’s a tough one. That should be a Justin question. Wait a sec. How’s this? ‘When I’m pregnant and married, I will let you know.’ Not a tabloid publication. Not Bulls–t Times or Crapass Bulls–t Times Weekly. They will not be telling you. And by the way, stop stealing my thunder! Let me have the fun of telling that story.”

Her wedding plans: “There’s a big discussion in our house right now: Do you just do it and say screw it? Or do you try desperately to get away with [a secret ceremony] where you don’t have any fun because you’re hiding in a cave somewhere? If we could do it without all the buzzing and the noise…It can be done. Where there’s a will there’s a way.”

Being in her 40s: “It may be harder to shed those extra pounds, but all of this stuff,” she says while circling her head with her fingers, “is fabulous. Just thinking about the girl I was at 20-something or even 30-something—there were so many questions, so many worries, so much wasted brain space on things that really don’t matter.”

Turning 40 was the turning point: “I’m a late bloomer. I mean, it’s no secret: I’ve had some challenging companionship. I think hitting a wall with that really kind of [helped me grow]. I found a great therapist. Not to sound too ‘woo woo,’ but I think the self-love piece was really important. And spending a lot of time alone. Having time to ask myself why there was such toxicity in my immediate space at times. Why would I attract that instead of light?”

Robert Downey Jr. introduced her to Justin Theroux: “I was on vacation in Kauai with [David Arquette] and [Courteney Cox] and my friend [Mandy Ingber], who’s also my yoga teacher. Robert was on the island shooting Tropic Thunder. One night he came over for dinner and brought his friend Justin Theroux. He was the screenwriter on Tropic Thunder. I had never heard of him…I remember thinking, ‘Isn’t he hot?’ But he was very hidden. As he says, for him, ‘It’s winter from the waist down no matter what season it is,’ so he was wearing black jeans, combat boots, glasses, and a fedora.” At that point in time, Aniston recalls, she was “soooo single. But it was never [a romantic thing]. I just thought, ‘What a lovely guy.’ He was funny. But he was actually really quiet. I later came to find out that he was just exhausted because he had been writing nonstop, like a little hamster on a wheel. This was his one night off, and he had no personality, but he was very sweet and very overdressed. I was like, ‘You must be really shvitzing up a storm in those jeans and combat boots.’”

Aniston plays around with the timeline of her relationship: “We just became very good friends, as did everyone on that [Wanderlust] set. We didn’t start dating until the following summer, after he went through a breakup. All of a sudden it was just like, ‘Well, you’re one of my closest friends and…’ Somehow I just saw him in a different light once he was available. If I haven’t gotten wiser about relationships, then I should be kicked out of life school because I’ve had some really good training.”

[From E! News]

Well well well. I’m not going to cite all of our old stories, but Jennifer is telling some lies about when she and Justin got together and whether there was actually some overlap between her relationship with Justin and Justin’s long-term relationship with Heidi Bivens. Even if you don’t believe the sources who claimed Justin and Jennifer were having sex all the time during the filming of Wanderlust, Justin and Jennifer were seen publicly together on dates in the spring, not the summer, and Heidi Bivens was very clear about when she moved out of the apartment she shared with Justin in NYC. There was an overlap.

2014 Golden Globes recap: what was your favorite moment from the night?

FFN_RIJ_GOLDEN_GLOBES_SET4_011214_51303471

After a few awards seasons where it felt like a who’s who of who’s that, it does feel like this year’s awards season is a return to old-school movie stars and BIG movies and big moments in TV. The Globes had some fits and starts, sometimes moving so quickly, I didn’t realize that 40 minutes had passed, and sometimes it was like, “Ugh, this 20 second speech is going on FOREVER!” Biggest disappointment: that 12 Years a Slave was shut out in all of the acting categories. Biggest excitement: 12 Years winning Best Picture, and I was also very pleased that Amy Adams finally won something. Anyway, here are some highlights from the 2014 Golden Globes:

*Honestly, I got super-excited before the show even began. It was a good year to be a fashion-watcher, both for good and bad style. Some great red carpet moments! Also: this year’s red carpet trend was AWFUL HAIR.

*Amy Poehler & Tina had so many amazing one-liners, it’s impossible to list them all. I think the biggest one was the Clooney one: “Gravity is nominated for best film. It’s the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.” I also loved: “Matthew McConaughey is here. For his role in Dallas Buyers Club, he lost 45 pounds, or what actresses call ‘being in a movie’.”

*Amy Poehler finally won something too! I love Amy and Tina’s long-standing bit with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and I love Amy’s yearly bits for her Parks & Rec nominations – this year’s bit included a back rub from Bono and it worked! The best part? After Amy won, Tina told her there was still a special place in hell for her, which is THE BEST Taylor Swift shade ever.

*Amy & Tina’s Leonardo DiCaprio joke was so good, it messed up the telecast! The joke: “And now, like a supermodel’s vagina, let’s all give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio.”

*What was with all of the s-bombs? Jacqueline Bisset is a bit of a whackadoodle, so I’ll forgive her, but Elisabeth Moss knows better. Speaking of, I was thrilled Elisabeth won. I think she’s so incredibly talented.

*Jennifer Lawrence won again (Best Supporting). I hope there isn’t a backlash against her, because right now it seems like everybody is putting her on a pedestal.

*Very happy for Bryan Cranston & Breaking Bad’s respective wins. Don’t say goodbye just yet – I’m sure the show and Cranston will also win big at the Emmys in September. Not to mention at the SAGs next Saturday.

*Bono’s kind of a tool but I would bang The Edge. That man is aging like a fine wine.

*I was beyond happy whenever the camera rested on Idris Elba, Don Cheadle, Emma Thompson or Meryl Streep. I could have watched all of them the whole show.

*The Globes were haunted by the presence of Angelina Jolie: Angelina’s father Jon Voight won, as did Angelina’s godmother Jacqueline Bisset. And Brad Pitt was the last person thanked on stage. Haunting.

*I was happy that Amy Adams finally won SOMETHING. She’s like the Susan Lucci of all awards shows – always nominated, never a winner.

*Jared Leto won Best Supporting Actor, proving once again that Michael Fassbender is an idiot for not waging a proper campaign. I have to give it to Leto, though – his campaign is extraordinarily effective. As for his geisha hair… um, NO. Meanwhile, Fassbender definitely won Best Ginger (joint with Amy Adams).

*WHO WAS THE RECIPIENT OF ROBERT DOWNEY JR.’S WINK?

*Emma Thompson is amazing everywhere. She is amazing in the audience, she’s amazing as a presenter, she’s amazing as a person. Everyone was like “Emma was so drunk” when she presented with a cocktail & her Louboutins in her hand, but I’m pretty sure she was just doing a bit.

*Michael Douglas used the word “mince” as a pejorative when he accepted his award for Beyond the Candelabra. Is this offensive?

*I like that Woody Allen didn’t give a sh-t enough to show up to accept his Cecil B. DeMille Award. He never comes out for these awards shows (when he’s nominated, or receiving a lifetime achievement, but he did go to the Oscars to present a tribute to NYC after 9/11) and I’m glad he didn’t start this year. But OMG, Diane Keaton accepting the award on his behalf was insane. SHE SANG.

*Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Comedy Actor for Wolf of Wall Street. I guess he’s getting an Oscar nomination. Ugh.

*YAY for Cate Blanchett! She looked gorgeous and I think she’s probably the frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar. Plus, I liked her speech!

*Matthew McConaughey won for Dallas Buyers Club? I mean… I get it, he really, really wanted it but NOOO. No.

*ALL OF THE BEARDS. So many wonderful beards, so little time.
