Move over Oscars — you’re not the only game in town announcing nominations this week! Because where there are Academy Awards to honor the best in film, lurking nearby are the Golden Raspberry Awards to recognize the worst achievements made in the past year, thus balancing out the cinematic universe. And of course, any daring actor worth their salt will find themselves acknowledged by both institutions over the course of a career, as brilliantly demonstrated by Halle Berry. Affectionately nicknamed the Razzies (as am I by a work colleague who calls me “Razzie,” short for Razzmatazz), the 45th annual awards take place a day before the Oscars on March 1. This year’s crop of nominees range from comic book to video game to breakfast cereal adaptations, plus whatever genre Megalopolis is. And the nominees are:

The voters behind the Razzie Awards have announced their nominees for what they deem the “worst” films and performances of the year.

Five movies tied for the dubious distinction of earning the most nods, with six each for video game adaptation Borderlands, the widely panned Joker: Folie à Deux, Marvel movie Madame Web, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis and Ronald Reagan biopic Reagan, featuring Jon Voight “imitating Bullwinkle’s nemesis Boris Badenov as its narrator,” according to a Jan. 21 press release.

Last year, the independent slasher parody Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey — based on the beloved A.A. Milne character — took home the trophy for “worst picture,” Megan Fox won “worst actress” for Johnny & Clyde and “worst supporting actress” for Exp4ndables while Voight — a “worst supporting actor” nominee in 2025 — took home “worst actor” for Mercy.

This year’s winners — who will take home a $4.97 gold spray-painted statuette, according to the release — will be revealed on Saturday, March 1, the day before the Academy Awards. Read on for the full slate of nominees.

I know what you’re all thinking: what about Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga — Parts 1-3,612?! History will judge this snub. There are a few more categories, but these are my predictions for the ones excerpted above: I’m going with Megalopolis for Worst Picture, down to its scale matching its degree of nonsensicality. I think Dakota Johnson has Actress pretty locked up, yes? Even if “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died,” didn’t make it into the final film, the line from the trailer was a MOMENT. As for Actor, I’m torn, because while I’d love for Zachary Levi to be declared a worst at anything, he’d still be winning an award. Supporting Actress is a complete toss up, but Supporting Actor? Come on, it has to go to Jon Voight, for the sheer breadth of contributions alone! Not everyone can appear in four clunkers in a single year, it is impressive. No wonder the president tapped him to be a new ambassador to the country of Hollywood. (Sidenote: how did I miss the release of a Reagan biopic with a Rocky & Bullwinkle connection? Thank moose and squirrel that my father isn’t around to see my transgression.) So yeah, Jon Voight for the win, or the whole thing is rigged!

PS — I know Razzies are film and not TV, but it seems appropriate to reminisce here on Voight’s hilarious line reading from Ray Donovan. “What did yooooooooou do Raymond?”

The National Board of Review awards: ‘Wicked’, Nicole Kidman & Daniel Craig

Love it or hate it, but the National Board of Review awards are a really good harbinger for what’s happening early in the Oscar races. The NBR is usually the first major critics organization to announce their awards and they’ve cultivated a real prestige among the smaller, non-televised awards shows. So the NBR announced their 2024-25 awards on Wednesday, and this is something. Wicked got best picture and best director! And Nicole Kidman’s best-actress campaign for Babygirl just got a huge boost.

Universal’s feature take of the Broadway musical, Wicked, wasn’t only named Best Film of 2024 by the National Board of Review, but the movie was also named Best Director for Jon M. Chu, while its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are receiving an NBR Spotlight Award for their creative collaboration.

Winners will be honored at the NBR’s annual awards gala Jan. 7 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. The ceremony will be hosted by MSNBC Morning Joe co-host Willie Geist. The group’s awards celebrate excellence in filmmaking and also hand out its signature honors for the NBR Icon Award, NBC Freedom of Expression and the WIlliam K. Everson Award for Film.

Do I think that any of these winners are really locked in? No. I think Daniel Craig is locked in for a nomination, but for a win? Who knows. As I said, this is a huge boost for Nicole’s chance for yet another Oscar nomination too, because I’ve seen Nicole excluded from several Best-Actress race predictions. Given the box office success of Wicked, I also think the film is guaranteed Best Picture nominations across the board, but I wonder if Hollywood is actually going to be eager to push Wicked for Best Picture ten weeks from now when Academy members are actually voting. Kieran Culkin is sort of drifting along as the favorite for supporting actor though, which feels like a relatively new consensus. Elle Fanning plays Bob Dylan’s early-career love interest in A Complete Unknown, and most of the conversations have been about Timothee Chalamet, not Elle. But we’ll see. I’m glad that people are noticing Elle though, she’s such an amazing actress.

Bradley Cooper responds to Brooke Shields calling him a guardian angel

Remember that time when Brooke Shields had a tonic-clonic seizure from drinking too much water, Bradley Cooper materialized and rode in the ambulance with her, and the doctor prescribed her potato chips? Since then I myself have gone to see the doctor. Sadly, she did not prescribe me potato chips. But I’ve been eating plenty anyway for my own seizure-prevention health measures.

Back when Brooke shared her saga, I commented that Bradley Cooper must love the good press being out there while the SAG-AFTRA strike barred him from promoting Maestro. Now that the strike is over, Bradley has kicked it into high gear promoting his passion project. The first major awards show of the season, the Gotham Awards, were held on Monday in NYC and Bradley showed up to accept the inaugural Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute award. What I get from Gotham’s description of the honor is that it’s not so much about Bradley’s filmmaking, but rather his having made a film about an icon. Bradley and costar Carey Mulligan walked the red carpet together, and Extra asked him about Brooke Shields calling him a guardian angel:

“I was happy to be in the right place at the right time,” Cooper told Extra at the event.

Earlier this month, Shields revealed in a Glamour interview that Cooper sat with her in the ambulance after she suffered a generalized seizure before performing her one-woman show, Previously Owned by Brooke Shields in N.Y.C. at the famous Cafe Carlyle restaurant.

The actress said of the incident that she went “headfirst into the wall” and started “frothing at the mouth, totally blue, trying to swallow my tongue.”

“The next thing I remember, I’m being loaded into an ambulance. I have oxygen on. And Bradley f—ing Cooper is sitting next to me holding my hand,” Shields told the publication.

“I couldn’t really get any words out,” the actress continued. “But I thought to myself, ‘This is what death must be like.’ You wake up and Bradley Cooper’s going, ‘I’m going to go to the hospital with you, Brooke,’ and he’s holding my hand…and I’m like, ‘This is odd and surreal.’”

Cooper and Shields previously starred in the 2008 horror film The Midnight Meat Train together and have remained friends ever since.

Cooper was joined on the carpet at the Gotham Awards by his Maestro costar Carey Mulligan. The actor, who also co-wrote and directed the film, was honored at the event with the Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute.

Watch the video below, I implore you! Bradley is doing that dance of campaigning: acting all humbled and saying what an honor it was to work on Maestro. He doesn’t want to seem too eager or desperate, but he also drives home how Bernstein’s kids were “a massive part” of the whole project — for the ultimate seal of approval. And then in the last few seconds the interviewer asks about Brooke and it’s like he deflates! There was a flash of a moment where I actually thought he might get angry. “I just bared my soul about my film-baby and you’re asking me about something else?!” Meanwhile, all Carey says during the whole interview is, “I’m wearing earrings.” I tell you, the only thing that would make this story better is if when Brooke was coming to in the ambulance, she looked at Bradley and said, “why the prosthetic nose?”
