Rami Malek: It’s harder to talk to new people in LA than it is in New York

rami1

I really do listen when you guys request more coverage (or to start covering) new or interesting dudes. I’m still looking for an excuse to write more about Matthias Schoenaerts, who is my latest major crush (and who never gets pap’d). I’d also love to write about Aidan Turner or James Norton, but honestly, we rarely get photos of those guys and there are never any stories about them. Seriously! We’ve had requests for MOAR Rami Malek, and more general love for Mr. Robot over the past year. The first season of Mr. Robot was dark and weird and disturbing, and many believe the show is one of the most interesting things on TV these days, and that Rami Malek, the star, is the Next Big Thing.

One of Rami’s biggest fans is Robert Downey Jr. RDJ has name-checked Rami in a few interviews, and RDJ also cited Mr. Robot as one of his favorite TV shows. So guess who interviewed Rami for Interview Magazine? RDJ, of course! Mr. Robot Season 2 just started last night, that’s why Rami is chatting. You can read the full piece here. While it’s a nice read, there’s not a lot of noteworthy stuff here. Malek seems like a nice guy, but he also seems to be living the job, or he just plays his personal life very close to the vest. Some highlights:

On RDJ visiting the set of Mr. Robot: “That was amazing. You turned me into a hero when you came to set. I’m not kidding. They were like, “You know him?” “How do you know him?” I knew it was very cool to know you, but the world started paying me more attention on that day on set. Maybe I elaborated on our relationship too much and started fantasizing it was more than it actually was. No, I just told them how close we were and that we hang out, we celebrate holidays together, we watch movies together, all of which is true!”

He’s an honorary New Yorker now:
“I’ve always felt like I belong there. Growing up [in L.A.] and having a family here was something that I, of course, adored because I was surrounded with that unit. But from the first time I went over there, I felt connected to the way things move, the pace, the ability to strike up a conversation with anybody. I know that people often say it’s hard to talk to people in New York. I think it’s harder sometimes in L.A. But I like the neighborhood vibe, I like getting on the train and going anywhere with that type of speed, having everything at my disposal. The culture, the pace, all of it. I like feeling like I’m in that concrete jungle.”

Whether he’ll be typecast because of Mr. Robot: “It’s something that I think about daily. I don’t want people to look back and think, “This character was entirely in his wheelhouse, and he’s probably going to end up playing a bunch of paranoid guys who have conspiracy theories.” Which could easily happen! I’ve had my fair share of 1970s conspiracy movies delivered over. I would love to turn around and do something polar opposite, and that might actually be happening soon. If the right people are involved and the script is just as powerful, I’d like to make some even crazier choices.”

[From Interview Magazine]

True story: I really did try to get into Mr. Robot during the first season but I just couldn’t. It was too dark and I kept losing track of the evil characters. Maybe I’ll give it another shot, because there are some hardcore devotees. As for Rami being typecast… one of my favorite pieces of trivia about him is that he was in both of the Night At the Museum movies. And he was in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. He won’t be typecast!

Rami also has a new profile in GQ – go here to read.

Tom Hiddleston will pee on you in a heartbeat if you get stung by a jellyfish

Tom Hollander is best known – by me – for playing Mr. Collins in the Keira Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice. He also has a part in The Night Manager, starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. They filmed TNM all over Europe and the Middle East, and the cast seemed to have a rare day off while they were filming in Mallorca. So they all went swimming together. And Hollander got stung by some jellyfish. And that’s when the story gets really interesting. You see, Tom Hiddleston is a good friend. He will pee on you in a heartbeat, that’s how lovely he is.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, Tom Hollander – who also appears in ITV drama Doctor Thorne – said the incident happened in Mallorca while the whole cast were hanging out. He recalled: “Here I was sitting by the seaside with Hugh Laurie who is one of the most entertaining people you’ll ever meet in your life and Olivia Colman, Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Debicki…

“The jellyfish incident was a sad tale because otherwise it was paradise until we went swimming and I, because I’m a gentlemen, lent Elizabeth Debicki my goggles which I’d brought to Mallorca because I knew about the jellyfish problem but she didn’t have any so she wore them and I swam into all the jellyfish. And I don’t know if you’ve ever been stung but it’s really, really painful. Guess who peed on me? Tom Hiddleston, he saw this, he is heroic and sort of Bond like. He’s officer class, he’s someone you want to stand next to as you go over the top in the First World War. Out of the corner of my eye someone with sharp strokes cutting through the water, Hiddleston had seen I was in trouble, he came out to me, I was standing on a rock submerged in just a few feet of water and he said, ‘It’s alright. Stand back, I know what to do’. And he said, ‘Where is it?’ I said ‘It’s all warm now.’ Tom had done what he needed to do which was to p**s all over me. And I’m sorry to say, it doesn’t actually work.”

[From The Express]

I’ve always thought that the urine-on-a-jellyfish-sting was true, but I looked it up and apparently there’s no scientific basis for it. In fact, urinating on a jellyfish sting can actually make the sting/pain worse. Which I didn’t know before now. Hiddles didn’t know either, which is why he peed on a friend. Poor Hollander! Not only did he get stung by a jellyfish, he’s now going to be stalked by Dragonflies because he’s been marked/sprayed by Lord Dragonfly.

Pope Francis & Donald Trump are beefing about immigration, Christianity

wenn23500351

In this photo, imagine Pope Francis saying, “Talk to the hand, Dorito.”

As you’ve probably seen the news coverage by now, you know that Pope Francis was on a multi-day trip to Mexico, where he said mass for tens of thousands of people, visited the border and fussed at some dirtbag who basically pulled him onto a dude in a wheelchair. As the Pope was concluding his Mexico trip, he did a press conference for the media outlets trailing him. He was asked about the Church’s stance on birth control, given the outbreak of the Zika virus and the medical recommendations that men wear condoms to avoid infecting their partners. Francis was basically like “I can’t technically tell people that it’s fine to wear condoms, but it’s not really all that sinful in this particular case.” Which, hey, is a good first step. Then Francis got a question about Donald Trump. And the Pope did not hold back.

Inserting himself into the Republican presidential race, Pope Francis on Wednesday suggested that Donald J. Trump “is not Christian” because of the harshness of his campaign promises to deport more immigrants and force Mexico to pay for a wall along the border.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said when a reporter asked him about Mr. Trump on the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.

Mr. Trump has staked out controversial positions on immigration, vowing to force Mexico to build a wall and also increase deportations. He has also made inflammatory comments accusing Mexican immigrants of being rapists and criminals. Asked whether he would try to influence Catholics in how they vote in the presidential election, Francis said he “was not going to get involved in that” but then repeated his criticism of Mr. Trump, with a caveat.

“I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that,” Francis said. “We must see if he said things in that way and in this I give the benefit of the doubt.”

[From The NYT]

Sure. And guess who has orange skin, a bouffant wiglet, no self-control and two thumbs? THIS GUY. So of course Donald Trump had to respond. Trump told a crowd in South Carolina that ISIS’s “primary goal is to get to the Vatican. That would be their ultimate trophy.” Is it though? And: “If and when the Vatican is attacked… the pope would only wish and have prayed that Donald Trump would have been elected president. Because this would not have happened.” Will Francis really be praying for that specifically? Trump also said:

“No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith. They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.”

[From Jezebel]

Yeah. So Donald Trump and Pope Francis are boy-beefing. How does that make you feel? For what it’s worth, I don’t think Francis was really questioning Trump’s faith as much as Francis was making a larger plea for understanding and compassion for immigrants. But whatever. BOY BEEF.

Benedict Cumberbatch & Sophie Hunter stepped out for the LFW Burberry show

wenn22912849

One of the hottest shows during London Fashion Week is the Burberry show. It’s been that way for years now. Burberry always spends the money on a great location, and the cream of the British-celebrity crop comes out time and time again. This season’s Burberry show was no different: celebrity guests included Anna Wintour, Poppy and Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Suki Waterhouse, St. Vincent and more. And guess who else? Lord and Lady Cumberbatch, of course!

Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter happily posed together in what I can only assume were coordinating Burberry ensembles. Maybe it’s just sheer relief at not seeing Bendy in another denim shirt, but I think he looks GREAT here. Like, this is the best he’s looked in months. His hair is in the process of growing out, he doesn’t look exhausted and he seems pleased to be at a social event. Sophie looks pretty good too – this might be the best her hair has ever looked, although that’s setting the bar pretty low (harsh but true). Two more fashion notes: I’m sure Sophie’s shoes cost about four mortgage payments, but I dislike them. And why is Benedict carrying a man-bag?

Last week, Star Magazine claimed that Benedict and Sophie were having big marriage problems already. While it wouldn’t surprise me if they were having some adjustment issues, they seem happier together than ever before. Huh. Oh, and over the weekend, the Daily Mail got some photos of Benedict and Sophie out with baby Christopher – go here to see the photos of Bendy cradling his Cumberbaby.

Michelle & Jim-Bob Duggar are ‘all hunkered down over here’, ‘it’s just a mess’

duggar1

Shortly after Gawker published their exclusive on Josh Duggar’s two Ashley Madison accounts, Gawker also did an interesting follow-up in which they wondered aloud if Josh had also been using a secret OKCupid account. While the profile photo was not a photo of Josh, everything else seemed to fit, including the “Joesmithsonnwa” handle, which Josh also used for his Ashley Madison account. Funny story: about twelve hours after Gawker published that OKCupid story, that profile was suddenly deleted. Interesting, eh?

Hilariously (or not so much, depending on your level of schadenfreude), it’s looking more and more like Josh also had a secret Facebook account too – the email account Josh used for his Ashley Madison account is also being used for a Facebook profile for “Joe Smithson” who lives in Arkansas. Again, the profile photo is not of Josh (the photo is of a Goldman Sachs executive’s son). But it’s probably Josh. And guess who he’s friended? Oh, just 32 people, mostly young women of the stripper and “lingerie model” variety.

So, yes, this whole thing has gotten messy to the point where there is no coming back. Even the Duggars know there’s no coming back. In the initial reporting of just the Ashley Madison accounts, a source told People Magazine: “It was pretty improbable that there were going to be any specials on any of the Duggars anyway. But now, with this, there’s virtually no chance. It’s basically just over now.” Then after Josh’s admissions, more sources spoke to People about how Jim-Bob and Michelle are handling the news that their first-born child is a lying, cheating, child-molesting adulterer.

Josh Duggar had already been living in relative seclusion with his family before his latest scandal imploded his world even further. Privately, a Duggar family insider tells PEOPLE: “We’re all hunkered down over here. It’s just a mess, it’s a whole mess. We don’t even know what the truth is anymore. It’s insane.”

A second source with ties to the family says the cheating scandal is a devastating blow to the Duggars’ firstborn, who resigned from his post at a right-wing Christian lobbying group in May.

“I would assume he feels like his life is ruined,” says the source. “It will be such a steep and practically impossible climb to come back from this.”

In this week’s PEOPLE cover story, a source who worked closely with the family says that in the wake of the molestation scandal, Jim Bob and Michelle recognized that anytime they were seen publicly with Josh, “a story gets made out of it that rehashes the whole mess. … Maintaining some distance is as much for his own good as it is for theirs.”

Now, with Josh’s confession to his “own personal failings,” the source with ties to the family says, “It’s like he’s a completely different person from who they thought he was. They’re still trying to reconcile all that they know is good about Josh, whom they will always love and adore, with what they’ve learned now.”

[From People]

I’ve heard stories about Michelle Duggar being in a bubble of right-wing, cult-like hyper-delusion and how she just lets Jim-Bob’s behavior dictate her own. But… my impression of Michelle during their horrible Fox News interview was that she’s wily. She’s deadly when she’s been coached. My guess is that somewhere deep inside, Jim-Bob and Michelle both realize that something is really wrong with Josh, but I don’t know if they’ll realize that the crazy cult-mentality and sheltered existence they’ve given their family hasn’t helped ANY of the children.

In a new People Magazine story (new this morning), People Mag’s Duggar-tastic sources say that Jim-Bob and Michelle are “absolutely stunned” and “this wasn’t something they ever imagined was possible” because, and I sh-t you not, “They so strictly limit their exposure to these sorts of outside influences – from websites to even the sort of television they watch, if they turn on the TV at all – that they were absolutely baffled by how this could have been possible.” It’s like they don’t even realize that their hyper-repressed household is WHY Josh is so screwed up. But no worries, y’all, because sources maintain that the Duggars are “feeling more devout than ever” and “their faith is in no way rocked by this.” Your faith SHOULD be rocked by this. This horrible hypocrisy taken with your son’s repeated and escalated incidents of molestation SHOULD cause you to take a moment, rethink your child-rearing and adjust.

Amy Poehler’s Book Cover and Synopsis Revealed

Amy Poehler book Yes, Please

Amy Poehler’s memoir-esque book Yes, Please will be released Oct. 28, 2014.

Amy Poehler is releasing a book in October called Yes, Please (also known as “what I’m getting every single person I know for Christmas.” You’re welcome.).

-Sadness: Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell have split after nearly two years of marriage. I like them both and wish them well!

-A new video clip shows One Direction’s squeaky clean Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik smoking pot on their way to a concert. And so it begins…

Hayden Panettiere is reportedly expecting her first child with fiance Wladimir Klitschko. She’s actually the best thing about Nashville (which pains me to say when Tami Taylor is also on that show, but it’s true.)

-Instagram took down a photo of a sweatshirt Scout Willis designed that features naked women, so she protested the social network site by walking around New York topless.

-The Hollywood Reporter asked Robert Pattinson if he still talks to Kristen Stewart“Oh, yeah,” he said blithely.

Tom Cruise’s new Edge of Tomorrow movie is tracking soft in the US. Should Johnny Depp start making space for him in Hollywood jail?

-Not tracking soft is Angelina Jolie‘s Maleficent, which I’m seeing tonight. Something tells me I’m going to walk out of that thing with a cheekbone complex.

Gwyneth Paltrow says that being a celebrity who faces online criticism is like being in a war. Oh god. She just makes it so easy, doesn’t she?

Katy Perry has scored Cosmopolitan’s first-ever global cover, which means she’ll be gracing the July cover of all 62 editions.

-I really like this article about how Seth Rogen proved Washington Post writer Ann Hornaday’s point about Elliot Rodger. Yes, Hornaday could have chosen a better example of misogynist pop culture than Neighbors (how about Mixology, which I stopped watching after one episode when it became clear the main character’s catchphrase would be “I’m going to smash her out!”), but Rogen’s knee-jerk reaction on Twitter was bad form. Also, as a Washington Post editor tweeted today, “Dear celebrities criticizing WaPo: Your objections would seem more sincere if you accepted our offer to respond in more than 140 characters.”

Levar Burton has started a Kickstarter to bring back Reading Rainbow. Get on that, parent types.

Monica Lewinsky‘s full essay in Vanity Fair is now online, if you were too cheap to buy the print issue.

-An Australian newspaper offered a ridiculous justification for publishing Kate Middleton‘s butt photos. As Jezebel states, “At parts, it reads like Ayn Rand does upskirt photography.”

-Here’s a good article examining the fascinating racial component of Louie. I was both confused and impressed by last episode’s flashback, in which his wife was white.

George RR Martin‘s tweet about Kimye’s wedding made me laugh out loud.

-This Ant Man news just keeps getting worse. More details about Edgar Wright’s exit suggest “Ant-Man’s tone might have been too quirky for the Marvel universe.” Um, have they not seen the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers?!

Benji Madden is reportedly madly in love with Cameron Diaz.  I’m sorry, but I just can’t take anything about a guy called Benji seriously.

Rick Ross got a new face tattoo on his chin that says “Rich Forever.” It’s about as attractive as you’d expect.

Taylor Kitsch seems to be the only person alive who is sad that a John Carter sequel will never happen.

Jonah Hill told a hilarious story about shooting a film with Morgan Freeman, who didn’t talk to him at all between takes — unless it was to banana song his name.

Tom Ford thinks Rihanna‘s Instagram account wields more power than any fashion magazine. Guess who’s about to be flooded with (even more) free stuff?

Amy Schumer‘s skit on a bachelorette disaster is beyond priceless.

-Finally, here’s our first glimpse of footage from FX’s The Strain. I’m already terrified.

Tina Fey and Jason Bateman figure prominently in the first trailer for This is Where I Leave You (though it also stars every other actor you love).

Britney Got Her Ass Kicked By Garth Brooks

Britney+Spears

Britney Spears is having a tough time selling Britney Jean, y’all. According to Billboard, it’s her lowest debut ever, moving only 107,000. By comparison, her last album, Femme Fatale, moved 276,000. She landed at #4.

And guess who is in #1? Garth Freaking Brooks.

jumanji what year is it meme

Seriously, did we time travel? Garth kicked Britney’s ass, and is, according to Billboard, “is tied for the most No. 1 albums with the Rolling Stones and Barbra Streisand, with nine each. Ahead of them on the all-time most-No. 1s list are Elvis Presley and Bruce Springsteen (both with 10 No. 1s), Jay Z (13) and the Beatles (19).”

Guess we can’t expect a huge viewing for her docuseries. Let’s hope her massive Vegas residency fares a lot better or Britney Jean is Britney Flops. (Sorry, that wasn’t even a clever pun. I couldn’t think of something funny that started with “J”. Go for it!)
