Robert Pattinson: My baby ‘smells incredible, she doesn’t smell like other babies’

A few weeks ago, there was a rumor floating around that Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse had secretly married at some point, possibly over the holidays? I don’t know if it’s true, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Suki and Rob have actually worked out something about how they present themselves in public as a couple. They’ve walked some red carpets and done some events together, they obviously have a baby together, but they withhold enough about their lives where there’s still some mystery and it never feels like we actually know what they’re up to. Anyway, Rob recently chatted with Vogue about his decade-long Dior contract, and he ended up talking about his baby girl and how amazing she smells. He’s so charming. Some highlights:

Working with Dior as the face of Dior Homme Parfum: “We have been together for longer than a decade. This was before everybody was working with a fragrance.” Pattinson says the changed Homme “feels like more of an aura than spraying some perfume on.”

Dior asked him to get on a motorcycle for the latest ad: “I learned how to ride a motorcycle for Batman, so when Dior asked if I could ride, I said yeah. Well, I could sort of ride a motorcycle-ish. But even trying to even start a motorcycle in wet sand is literally impossible. I just thought, ‘I’m going to die on this.’” Add the girl in his arms (literally) and Pattison just has to laugh. “If the Dior man can do this easily, well it’s very impressive.”

He’s not great at driving or stunt work: “I’m very anxiety-prone, I don’t like driving fast in real life at all. I can’t even parallel park! I need it to be valet-only like in Clueless. But there’s something about my pride that comes out when I’m being filmed. All of a sudden, I’m like ‘yeah, I can drive 120 miles an hour through this tiny little gap.’”

His baby’s smell: “I remember people used to be like ‘oh, don’t you like the smell of babies, but I thought they were just smelling the baby powder. But then I had a baby, and I was like ‘my baby smells incredible.’ There’s something there, I can identify her. She doesn’t smell like other babies.”

[From Vogue]

There’s a scientific explanation for why babies smell so good to their parents – it’s basically an evolutionary thing, to help parents bond with their babies. I just find it sweet that Rob is so enamored with his daughter though – from Suki’s interviews, I’ve gotten the feeling that Rob was the one who wanted to take a long family leave to spend time with the baby, and that he’s just so pleased with fatherhood. As for the rest of it… I’m not a great parallel parker but I can do it (I just need a minute). I always love how charmingly neurotic Rob sounds.

Robert Pattinson on his infant daughter: ‘She’s just a little potato who poos’

I’m always here for a Robert Pattinson interview. I remember, many years ago, when Rob was promoting one of his indie films which few people would see, and he gave a great interview to a major magazine. There were film critics and industry people who were like: this guy is so charismatic, weird, watchable and funny, why can’t anyone find a script for him? At this point, the problem is probably Pattinson himself and the projects he chooses to do. He’s never wanted to be a heartthrob or a movie star. He’s too weird and eccentric for that. And yet, this is what the New York Times’ T Magazine’s profile is called: Is Robert Pattinson the Last True Movie Star? The answer, to me, is no. But T Magazine makes a good case. Some highlights:

Now that he’s a father, he’s searching for “healthy” hobbies. He’s considered bonsai (“they just start rotting”), trapeze (“can’t do that in public”), tennis (“not enough spatial awareness”) and dance (“my spinal cord freezes”)

One of the last movie stars. “Not in a million years did I think I’d still be doing this when I got my first job. I can’t believe this is still going.” By managing to avoid the clichés of childhood fame, he’s also retained a certain mystique; he neither descended into addiction nor had to spend his adulthood proving his credibility….Perhaps because he started so young or because he’s handsome and weird, he gets to have it both ways…

He walks into roles with a gonzo conviction. “If you turn up with a strong idea, people have no choice but to mold it.”

He’s always making up crazy stories while doing press: Not long ago, he rewatched a televised interview that he did in 2011, during which he told a fabricated story about seeing a clown die in a little-car explosion as a child. “There was absolutely no hesitation at all [in my voice]… I’m like, ‘What on earth? Are you possessed?’” In truth, he was just bored. (Other lies and embellishments he’s told interviewers over the years: that he was a women’s hand model; that there’s a deleted “Twilight” scene involving coprophilia; that he got rid of a stalker by taking her to dinner and tiring her with his problems.) During that period, he says, “the only thing people would ever ask me about was being famous. You go into, like, a fugue state.”

What he learned working with David Cronenberg: “I used to think, ‘I need to figure out the logic of where this character was born, his social class, what his parents did.’ With Cronenberg, I realized that it can be about the musicality of words and how they make you feel to say them.”

The hysteria around him has died down. “There’s something about the nature of being fresh meat. They thought, ‘You’re not even a human.’ That was my one idea for Bruce… He’s been portrayed until now as a playboy. But what if he’s completely socially inept and kind of agoraphobic?”

He was never big on the party scene: “There used to be a big party scene in L.A. The idea of getting into a car for 15 minutes to get anywhere at all, it made me stay in my house. And then you go completely insane.”

He met Suki Waterhouse in 2018 at a Los Angeles house party. “She was sitting opposite me,” says Pattinson, who doesn’t remember much else about the game of Werewolf that they were playing with Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Al Pacino and other actors. “Suki and I kept making each other laugh, to the point where someone told us we weren’t taking the game seriously enough. That was a very, very sweet moment.”

Becoming a girl-dad: Leading up to [his daughter’s] arrival, he thought about buying a gun to protect their house. “But then she comes out and she’s just a little potato who poos.” Given the instability of the movie business, he adds that the permanence of fatherhood has grounded him.

[From The NY Times]

I sort of agree with the thesis that the combination of Pattinson’s looks and weirdness have kept him alive in the industry. If he wasn’t so beautiful, he would just be a weird, gross guy who lies a lot. But his beauty imbues his weirdness with humanity and heart – he comes across like a posh British eccentric who loves indie films. I do think there are so many what-ifs for Pattinson’s career though – what if he was better at choosing projects, what if he didn’t make the choices he’s made, etc. But then again, he’s promoting a film he did with Bong Joon-ho (Mickey 17) so maybe Rob had it right the whole time.

Robert Pattinson & Suki Waterhouse are expecting their first child

A few weeks ago, there were some super-exclusive paparazzi photos of Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse out and about in LA, I think. What was notable about the pics was that Suki clearly had a decent-sized baby bump. The photos were not widely circulated and that was sort of nice – there wasn’t a huge conversation about Suki and Rob expecting their first child, and people sort of gave them space to announce it in their own time. Suki did so over the weekend, and then her people – and Rob’s people as well, I think – confirmed the news to several outlets.

Suki Waterhouse is expecting her first baby with boyfriend Robert Pattinson. Following weeks of pregnancy rumors, the Daisy Jones and the Six actress confirmed the news while performing onstage at the Corona Capital Music Festival in Mexico City Nov. 19.

“I decided to wear something particularly sparkly because I thought it might distract you from something else that’s going on,” the singer told the crowd, gesturing toward her baby bump, which she showcased in a glittering silver mini dress. “I’m not sure if it’s working.”

Suki’s pregnancy comes five years after she and the Twilight alum first sparked romance rumors while out on a PDA-filled movie date to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in London.

[From E! News]

Yeah, they’ve been together for five years and they’ve been living together for the past three years, I’m pretty sure. They’ve always been a pretty low-key couple and I think Rob likes that a lot. They’ve only recently (like in the past 18 months) started making regular red carpet appearances together. Rob is 37 years old now!! Suki is 31. Congrats to them and give your closest Twihard a hug today. I’m not sure if those people still believe that Rob and K-Stew are secretly still together or not, but I’m sure there are always some fringe conspiracies.

Fashion Lupita Nyong’O Robert Pattinson Suki Waterhouse

Lupita Nyong’o posted about dissociating from someone who deceived her

Here are some photos from this weekend’s Go Campaign’s annual gala. Robert Pattinson – a Go Campaign ambassador – attended with his girlfriend Suki Waterhouse. Lupita Nyong’o was there as well, and she brought her mother, Dorothy Ogada, as her date. I want to talk about Lupita more than Rob, if that’s okay. Weirdly, Rob seems so settled lately, like he’s finally figured out some kind of balance in his life and everything’s going well for him, so it’s not that scandalous or anything. But Lupita has some drama and it’s not just her shell headpiece or her sack dress.

So, last Wednesday, Lupita turned up at a Janelle Monae concert in Inglewood. She was with a group of friends, one of whom was Joshua Jackson. Jodie Turner Smith just filed for divorce from Joshua a few weeks ago, and reportedly, he was surprised. Reportedly, Joshua and Lupita are “just friends” but… you know, people will gossip. That Janelle Monae concert outing came at the very same time that people noticed that Lupita wiped all evidence of Selema Masekela from her social media. Lupita and Selema had been together for a year, probably longer. Well, the day after the concert, Lupita posted this note on her social media:

There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering.

At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust…

I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, “Whatever, my life is better this way.” But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love. And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass. The promise, they say, is that a tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness. I hope it’s true… I share this to keep it 100, and hoping that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it. #Breakup

Let’s face our pain so we don’t spread it.

[From Lupita’s IG]

WTF did Selema do to Lupita? What kinds of lies, what deceptions, what did he do that was so horrible that she needed to publicly dissociate herself?? The fact that all of this happened within 24 hours is bonkers too – Lupita wipes her IG of any trace of Selema, goes to the concert with Joshua and then posts this message… I really, really want to know what went down. It was bad, I know that much. It also feels like Lupita’s mom probably had to fly in after the sh-t went down.

Beatrice Borromeo Charlize Theron Fashion Jennifer Lawrence Robert Pattinson

Jennifer Lawrence looked different at the big Dior show in Paris this week

There was a huge Dior runway show/event in Paris yesterday, and all of the Dior-associated people came out for it. I’m including photos of Jennier Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, a severe-looking Charlize Theron and my pick for prettiest princess, Beatrice Borromeo (married to Pierre Casiraghi).

So… um, thoughts about Jennifer Lawrence? J-Law has been a Dior brand ambassador for many, many years, as have Rob Pattinson and Charlize. Jen usually only comes to fashion week for the Dior show and nothing else. We haven’t seen much of her since June, when she promoted No Hard Feelings. At a few of those June premieres, we did talk about her changing/tweaked face. It seems to have gotten worse. I’m still sort of curious about what she’s done and why – she was always such a natural beauty, but she seems to love that “Real Housewife/Kardashian” look so much that she’s trying to emulate it. It’s like she’s surgically eliminated the uniqueness and character from her face.

Rob’s pants are ridiculous and I can’t believe Dior gave Charlize THAT outfit.

Jamie Dornan Robert Pattinson

Jamie Dornan was ‘quite jealous’ of Robert Pattinson when they were young actors

I did not know that Jamie Dornan and Robert Pattinson were once roommates as young actors in London. I presume someone somewhere has written a fanfiction about these two beautiful men living together and so forth; if not, please commence, Internet! Just kidding. But I guess it makes sense that they were friends, coming up together at the same time. They also shared a flat with Andrew Garfield, Charlie Cox, and Eddie Redmayne during this period. Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Jamie was promoting the Netflix action movie Heart of Stone, slated for an August 11 release. Obviously the actors are not doing any promotional work anymore. Wired released an interview on YouTube recorded prior to the strike with Jamie and his co-stars Gal Gadot and Alia Bhatt. In it, Jamie talks about his friendship with Rob Pattinson and how he used to be jealous of Rob’s early success with Twilight.

Jamie Dornan has nothing but love — and a hint of jealousy — for longtime friend Robert Pattinson.

In a new WIRED interview with Heart of Stone castmates Gal Gadot and Alia Bhatt, the Irish actor, 41, reflected on his relationship with the Twilight star.

“I’ve known Rob forever,” he said. “He’s a really good friend. I love him. I think he’s one of the most interesting and exciting actors around.”

The Fifty Shades star explained that he was envious of Pattinson, 37, who was making a name for himself as vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen when the pair — as well as pals Andrew Garfield, Charlie Cox and Eddie Redmayne — were roommates over a decade ago.

“I probably at one point was quite jealous of him, like early on when we were all friends back in London and Rob was just like going places and we sort of weren’t,” he admitted, referring to Pattinson’s Twilight fame.

“You love him,” Gadot chimed in, teasing her costar. “You love him so much.”

“I think he’s amazing,” Dornan agreed, adding that the Lighthouse actor is “the nicest guy in the world.”

[From People]

It’s sweet that they’re still friends. In my view, Rob became a movie star (or what passes for a movie star in this day and age) and Jamie didn’t get to quite the same level of fame for one reason: Rob is interesting. Rob is chaotic, and always has been. He constantly says absurd things in interviews, he prefers to play weird characters whenever he can, and he subverted expectations and didn’t get swole to play Batman. (He trained for three months prior to filming, but he didn’t go the full Chris Hemsworth superhero routine.) You truly never know what’s going to come out of that young man’s mouth. Jamie is beautiful, but boring. He’s also a good actor when given the right material but he isn’t as good at being a celebrity and I don’t think he takes as many risks with the roles he chooses. Nevertheless, there are far worse fates than being a square-jawed leading man who has little to do besides look stoic–it’s nice work if you can get it. As an aside, I find it amusing that both men played a version of Edward Cullen–Rob played the Original, and Jamie the Sadist Redux since Fifty Shades is based on Twilight. Fifty Shades is much worse than Twilight, but it’s just funny to me that they’ve both played that character.

FKA Twigs Kristen Stewart Met Gala Robert Pattinson Suki Waterhouse

Robert Pattinson & Suki Waterhouse walked the Met Gala carpet together

Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse rarely do events together or walk red carpets together. Even though they’ve been dating for years (something like four or five years, I believe), there are only a handful of photos of them together at an event, and paparazzi photos of them together only happen every six months or so. So, the Met Gala was a very special occasion for them, it seems. I don’t know if Rob didn’t know or didn’t care that he might run into two of his most high-profile exes, but it’s funny that he walked the carpet around the same time as Kristen Stewart and FKA Twigs. God, I would love to know if he spoke to either of them. As for Suki, she wore a vintage Fendi look.

Kristen Stewart was a longtime Chanel model and brand ambassador, even though the partnership never really fit. Apparently, Karl Lagerfeld did like her a lot, for what it’s worth. She wore Chanel and posed with Sofia Coppola, Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Casiraghi on the carpet (all were in Chanel).

FKA Twigs wore Maison Margiela. It’s a nice look, but I would have expected her to lean into the theme a lot more.
