Michael Douglas: American actors today are too ‘sensitive’ and ‘asexual’

Michael Douglas gave an interview to The Independent to promote his role in Ant-Man. Yep, Douglas is a Marvel man now. If the studio is listening, he wants them to know he’s also open to an Avengers film. Just like every other actor in the universe.

Douglas piggybacks here on a recent Guardian interview with Dustin Hoffman, in which the actor said television is king now, and “film is the worst it ever has been.” Douglas sort of agrees, but he mainly uses this interview to lament the current state of the American actor. Dude is 70 years old, and he’s been acting for 50 of them. He’s seen a thing or two, and Douglas believes American actors are too busy “getting caught up in their image” to be masculine:

On manly actors: “There’s something going on with young American actors – both men and women – because the Brits and Australians are taking many of the best American roles from them. Clearly, it breaks down on two fronts. In Britain they take their training seriously while in the States we’re going through a sort of social media image conscious thing rather than formal training. Many actors are getting caught up in this image thing which is going on to affect their range. With the Aussies, particularly with the males it’s the masculinity. In the US we have this relatively asexual or unisex area with sensitive young men and we don’t have many Channing Tatums or Chris Pratts, while the Aussies do. It’s a phenomena.”

The problem with the internet age: “There’s a crisis in young American actors right now. Everyone’s much more image conscious than they are about actually playing the part.”

On Dustin Hoffman’s statement: “I understand what he’s saying, but I think you have to look at the delivery system. There’s a lot of good stuff being made in the cable area, good writing there. Kramer vs Kramer, those great mainline films he was in aren’t being made anymore [for cinema] but are in a different delivery system. Most of the great screen writers have gone into the cable area because that’s where they can also produce. The problem in making a film for cinema is the cost of distribution. People can scrape together money for a movie but not the advertising.”

[From The Independent]

I don’t think Douglas realizes how far a little bit of Chris Pratt goes, and there’s only room for one of them in Hollywood. But I see what he’s saying. Douglas has appeared in so many films, but he sticks out most (in my memory) as the virile adventurer in those Romancing the Stone movies. Back then, there was no such thing as social media. Images were crafted by studios and monthly magazines, not by the immediacy of selfies on the Internet.

Evangeline Lilly: ‘I don’t believe in forever promises. I don’t think it’s realistic’

Evangeline Lilly

Evangeline Lilly covers the January issue of Ocean Drive to promote The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies. The last time we covered her, she revealed herself as a clueless non-feminist who wasn’t interested in “trying to pretend to be a man.” Evangeline talked about how roles came to her doorstep, and she never auditions for anything. This was reason enough for her to believe feminism isn’t necessary in today’s world. Evangeline previously said she would love to be barefoot and pregnant forever (because it’s “like a dream“), which sounded like an interview from a different person.

Adding to this confusion is this new discussion about Evangeline’s partner, Norman Kali. They’ve been together for 5 years and are parents to a 3-year-old son named Kahekili. Evangeline says she’s not into marriage, but she wants to have 6 kids. Kahekili is a stay-at-home dad, which is perfectly cool. But I have no idea how this fits in with Evangeline’s desire to be barefoot, pregnant, and not a feminist:

She doesn’t believe in lifelong love: “In my world, I don’t believe in forever promises. I don’t think it’s realistic.”

She still might marry her dude: “Every other 16-year-old girl wanted to look at bridal magazines; I could not have been more bored with the notion.I have an American son and an American partner, so marriage might logistically make sense at one point. My partner is a stay-at-home father, so if he wants to be on my health plan, or taxwise, or maybe on paper we want to have our I’s dotted and our T’s crossed, but emotionally neither of us really feels the need for it. We love each other today, and we hope we’ll love each other tomorrow.”

She’s thinking of adopting four kids? “What I wanted originally was six kids. I frickin’ love being pregnant. I’m one of the lucky women who just had a blissful pregnancy, but I wanted to adopt four. My partner and I have really been through the ringer in the adoption world and it’s hard, so we’ll see what happens. Life is magically beautiful, and it brings you what is perfect.”

Being a mother “grounded” her: “I spent a lot of time in the clouds. Becoming a mother has really helped me put my feet on the ground and given me a very powerful sense of self and a powerful sense of priority in life. All I have to do is see my son to do that mental check that says, ‘Is this really important? Do you really need to be doing this? Do you really care?’ It helps put everything in perspective when things get stressful or when there’s a demand or pressure on me. At the end of the day, it’s our family, it’s being a mother and a partner and seeing love all around.”

She’s still trying to deal with her fame: “It just didn’t work for me.”

[From Ocean Drive]

Evangeline is an odd duck. I remember an interview she gave to Jay Leno, and she talked about working as a flight attendant. She got angry at a passenger and farted in his face! Perhaps she has impulse control problems? Evangeline famously retired from acting after a 6-season run on Lost. She made a quick comeback for the Hobbit films. She didn’t enjoy fame or anything that came with it. I don’t think she knows what she wants, from her love life or career. We’ll be seeing her soon in Ant-Man. So much for retirement, again.

Amy Poehler’s Book Cover and Synopsis Revealed

Amy Poehler book Yes, Please

Amy Poehler’s memoir-esque book Yes, Please will be released Oct. 28, 2014.

Amy Poehler is releasing a book in October called Yes, Please (also known as “what I’m getting every single person I know for Christmas.” You’re welcome.).

-Sadness: Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell have split after nearly two years of marriage. I like them both and wish them well!

-A new video clip shows One Direction’s squeaky clean Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik smoking pot on their way to a concert. And so it begins…

Hayden Panettiere is reportedly expecting her first child with fiance Wladimir Klitschko. She’s actually the best thing about Nashville (which pains me to say when Tami Taylor is also on that show, but it’s true.)

-Instagram took down a photo of a sweatshirt Scout Willis designed that features naked women, so she protested the social network site by walking around New York topless.

-The Hollywood Reporter asked Robert Pattinson if he still talks to Kristen Stewart“Oh, yeah,” he said blithely.

Tom Cruise’s new Edge of Tomorrow movie is tracking soft in the US. Should Johnny Depp start making space for him in Hollywood jail?

-Not tracking soft is Angelina Jolie‘s Maleficent, which I’m seeing tonight. Something tells me I’m going to walk out of that thing with a cheekbone complex.

Gwyneth Paltrow says that being a celebrity who faces online criticism is like being in a war. Oh god. She just makes it so easy, doesn’t she?

Katy Perry has scored Cosmopolitan’s first-ever global cover, which means she’ll be gracing the July cover of all 62 editions.

-I really like this article about how Seth Rogen proved Washington Post writer Ann Hornaday’s point about Elliot Rodger. Yes, Hornaday could have chosen a better example of misogynist pop culture than Neighbors (how about Mixology, which I stopped watching after one episode when it became clear the main character’s catchphrase would be “I’m going to smash her out!”), but Rogen’s knee-jerk reaction on Twitter was bad form. Also, as a Washington Post editor tweeted today, “Dear celebrities criticizing WaPo: Your objections would seem more sincere if you accepted our offer to respond in more than 140 characters.”

Levar Burton has started a Kickstarter to bring back Reading Rainbow. Get on that, parent types.

Monica Lewinsky‘s full essay in Vanity Fair is now online, if you were too cheap to buy the print issue.

-An Australian newspaper offered a ridiculous justification for publishing Kate Middleton‘s butt photos. As Jezebel states, “At parts, it reads like Ayn Rand does upskirt photography.”

-Here’s a good article examining the fascinating racial component of Louie. I was both confused and impressed by last episode’s flashback, in which his wife was white.

George RR Martin‘s tweet about Kimye’s wedding made me laugh out loud.

-This Ant Man news just keeps getting worse. More details about Edgar Wright’s exit suggest “Ant-Man’s tone might have been too quirky for the Marvel universe.” Um, have they not seen the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers?!

Benji Madden is reportedly madly in love with Cameron Diaz.  I’m sorry, but I just can’t take anything about a guy called Benji seriously.

Rick Ross got a new face tattoo on his chin that says “Rich Forever.” It’s about as attractive as you’d expect.

Taylor Kitsch seems to be the only person alive who is sad that a John Carter sequel will never happen.

Jonah Hill told a hilarious story about shooting a film with Morgan Freeman, who didn’t talk to him at all between takes — unless it was to banana song his name.

Tom Ford thinks Rihanna‘s Instagram account wields more power than any fashion magazine. Guess who’s about to be flooded with (even more) free stuff?

Amy Schumer‘s skit on a bachelorette disaster is beyond priceless.

-Finally, here’s our first glimpse of footage from FX’s The Strain. I’m already terrified.

Tina Fey and Jason Bateman figure prominently in the first trailer for This is Where I Leave You (though it also stars every other actor you love).

Lea Michele Matthew Morrison

Lea Michele dodged a question about what Matthew Morrison is like in bed, saving us all from untold amounts of therapy.

Miley Cyrus reportedly misses Liam Hemsworth and wants to get back together. Why?!

-The Kimye wedding may be happening right now. It’s probably best to avoid Twitter for the next 72 hours or so.

-Here’s the trailer for Jennifer Aniston’s Life of Crime, which was well-received last TIFF.

Robert Pattinson needs a hug: “I’m kind of like, way too sensitive to criticism; I’ve got enough criticism on one front.”

-Meanwhile, critics are raving about Kristen Stewart‘s performance in Clouds of Sils Maria, saying it will fundamentally change your perception of her. I just wish she wore a different outfit to the Cannes premiere.

-I can barely believe it, but this teaser makes it seem like The Comeback is really, truly returning to HBO. Got it?

Taylor Swift wears shoes that help her pretend she’s a different person. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a pair of oxfords.

-Fanboys everywhere are freaking out about the news that Edgar Wright has dropped out of Marvel’s Ant-Man due to “differences of vision.”  What was the point of hiring him if they didn’t want an Edgar Wright-y movie?

-What happens when Lance Armstrong plays Cards Against Humanity? Things get awkward, that’s what. Celebrities: they’re just like us!

-Here is Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and Will Ferrell‘s hilarious drum-off on The Tonight Show. Needs more cowbell.

-Following reports of a “touchy-feely” dinnerMeryl Davis and Maks Chmerkovskiy were asked point blank if they’re sleeping together.

-A new book on underground poker calls Tobey Maguirethe best player and the worst tipper.”

Katharine McPhee has filed for divorce from Nick Cokas 7 months after her cheating scandal.

Twitter users have responded to being featured in Jimmy Kimmel’s “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets About Them.”

-Information about the new characters that will be featured on next season’s Game of Thrones has leaked.

-Speaking of GoT, someone gave Brienne and Podrick the Perfect Strangers theme treatment and it’s amazing.

Hugh Jackman says he hated having to diet while shooting X-Men in Montreal because of all the delicious food.

Rachel Bilson bared her baby bump in a bikini while vacationing with Hayden Christensen in Barbados.

-This is depressing: Jack White says he “almost never” sees Meg.

-Much less depressing: Netflix in talks for Wet Hot American Summer TV series.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston helped facilitate a red carpet proposal at Cannes.

-A new teaser for The Leftovers has arrived. I’m super intrigued by this show.

-Speaking of TV, here are the five toughest timeslot battles in the new fall season.

-Here’s a new trailer for Red Band Society, one of the most buzzed about new series for fall. Is that Ricky from My So-Called Life?! YES!!!!

Paul Rudd To Play Lamest Super Hero Ever

Paul+Rudd

Paul Rudd is going to be in a superhero movie. He’s going to be a superhero. But not at the Ben Affleck/Batman level. No, this is on a much smaller level, pun intended.

Variety reports that Paul Rudd is going to be Ant-Man.

What in the ever-loving f-ck is “Ant-Man”? Who the f-ck is going to see “Ant-Man”?

Here’s what Variety says about the character:

In the comics, the character’s alter-ego is Henry Pym, a brilliant scientist who invented a substance that allowed him to change his size and communicate with insects. One scenario that was rumored when Wright first came on is that he would focus on the later years of Ant-Man and add the character Scott Lang, a crook who steals Pym’s technology and becomes the new Ant-Man. This may hint at the idea that both Rudd and Gordon Levitt could potentially become involved in the film, although the idea seems unlikely.

I’m sorry, but this sounds like the lamest superhero of all time. OF ALL TIME. Tom Hanks, I know you want to be a villain in a superhero movie, but I’d stay away from this one.

Although WTF do I know? Marvel fans, can you educate me on Ant-Man and why this is interesting?
