Jack Black Movies Paul Rudd Reboots

Jack Black and Paul Rudd star in an Anaconda remake, out this December

Sound the alarm because we’ve got another remake alert! If you’ve been longing for a 2025 version of the 1997 Jennifer Lopez action-horror classic, Anaconda, then I’ve got some great news for you. A remake starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd is hitting theaters on December 25. This re-imagining adds an “everything old is now funny” twist by turning it into a very “meta” action-comedy. Rudd and Black play besties that set out to remake their favorite movie, Anaconda, but are thwarted by – you guessed it – a giant snake. Thandiwe Newton and Steve Zahn co-star. Merry Christmas to everyone who is scared of snakes!

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the action-comedy, which stars Black and Rudd as lifelong best friends Doug and Griff, who, according to a synopsis, have “always dreamed of remaking their all-time favorite movie: the cinematic ‘classic,’ Anaconda.”

That’s the 1997 thriller about a film crew fighting to survive a giant killer snake, which starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson and Jon Voight. In the new movie, a midlife crisis inspires Doug and Griff to pursue their dream, so they go to the Amazon to pull off their remake.

“But,” teases the synopsis, “things get real when an actual giant anaconda appears, turning their comically chaotic movie set into a deadly situation. The movie they’re dying to make? It might just get them killed.”

“It’s a genuine kick in the ass,” Rudd, 56, says of Anaconda, which comes from director Tom Gormican, who was behind 2022’s very-meta Nicolas Cage movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Adds Rudd, “It was a clever script and the meta angles of it were appealing to me. I was a big fan of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and the tone of this and that seemed to live in the same world.”

Black, 56, echoes that Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten “brought that same meta magic energy to this script and production.”

The Jumanji actor adds that it was “so fun” to team up with Rudd. “It was the main reason I wanted to do the movie,” says Black. “I’m a huge fan of Paul’s work. Dude is f—ing hilarious. And a sweet pea to boot!”

Likewise, for Rudd: “I love Jack and was thrilled to get to do this with him. We’ve done a few little things in the past, and to get to really work together for months like this was fantastic.”

The cast also includes Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, Selton Mello and Steve Zahn, who couldn’t help but crack up at his funny costars. “I f—ed up so many takes laughing at these guys,” says Zahn, 57. “Dream job.”

According to Black, Anaconda is an “exciting mix of comedy and horror.” He adds, “Buckle up for the thrill ride of the season — Anaconda is coming!”

[From People]

So, this movie was actually announced all the way back in January 2020, but it fell off everyone’s radar because…you know. I love the original Anaconda, but I’m also a sucker for a good action-comedy. The trailer (below) dropped on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and it’s truly everything that I imagined this movie to be. It sets it up at the very beginning that they’re going to remake Anaconda and, of course, Sir Mix-a-lot’s “Baby Got Back” plays throughout it. There’s only a small portion in the trailer that’s scary, but overall, it looks like this is going to be heavy on the suspense and comedy.

While I didn’t ask for this remake, I’ll admit that I am looking forward to it. It’s giving Tropic Thunder meets the Jumanji reboot. I mean, why not? I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, and it’s not exactly the type of prestige Oscar-contending drama that we usually get during the holidays. I’m also a huge fan of both Paul Rudd and Jack Black and really enjoyed what Tom Gormican did with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. What’s the over/under that JLo, Owen Wilson or Ice Cube will make a cameo? We all lose if Jon Voight ends up being the sole returnee!

Here’s the trailer:

Paul Rudd handed out water in Philadelphia to people waiting in line to vote

Obviously, Tuesday did not go as we wanted or were hoping that it would. I know we’re all devastated. I’m devastated. I’m scared. I’m pissed. I can’t even properly enjoy that my adopted state, North Carolina, went blue in all of the big races, including defeating a member of Moms for Liberty for school superintendent. It sucks. We even gained two Democrats in our State House and broke up the Republican supermajority in the General Assembly!

So while there’s some, but not much, good news from yesterday, there is one story that I wanted to highlight. Paul Rudd made surprise appearances at both Temple University in Philadelphia and Villanova University in Villanova, PA to hand out water bottles to students who were waiting in line to vote. When asked by MSNBC what he was up to, he said that he thought it was “wonderful” that so many young people were voting and he just wanted to make sure they knew how awesome he thought it was that they were waiting in hours-long lines to do their patriotic duty.

Paul Rudd made a surprise appearance at universities in Pennsylvania to hand out water to students waiting in hours-long lines to vote. While reporting live from Philadelphia’s Temple University, MSNBC National Correspondent Jacob Soboroff spotted the “Ant-Man” and “I Love You, Man” star and sprinted over to him.

“Hey, Paul, I’m on live with Nicolle Wallace on MSNBC!” Soboroff said before asking the actor what brought him out to Pennsylvania voting lines.

“I just wanted to give people water,” Rudd said. “They’re waiting in line for a long time, and it’s a wonderful thing that all these young people are out voting.”

When Soboroff told Rudd that some people have waited up to two hours to vote, Rudd said, “That’s impressive.”

“We’ve been doing lots of stuff today here in Pennsylvania,” Rudd said. “We wanted to come out and tell these students they’re doing really great things.”

Soboroff then asked Rudd how he felt about the election, prompting Rudd to laugh and say, wryly, “I feel good about handing out some waters!”

Soboroff left Rudd and continued to interview voters, stopping to talk to a first-time voter, a young Black woman, who said it wasn’t hard to make up her mind. “It’s been ready to go, out the gate,” she said. “I didn’t need to hear people talking in my ear.”

Rudd then appeared behind them. “Want a water from Paul Rudd?” Soboroff asked. “Yes, I do!” she exclaimed, and handed her phone to Soboroff so he could take a photo of the two of them.

Based on photos posted to X, Rudd also showed support for students waiting to vote at Villanova University, which is located less than an hour from Temple. During the 2020 election, Rudd made headlines for handing out cookies to people standing in the rain while waiting to vote in Brooklyn, N.Y.

[From Variety]

I had completely forgotten about Paul handing out cookies in Brooklyn in 2020. He’s such a sweetheart. It’s pretty awesome that he does these things without being invited or announcing it to draw attention to it. And now those students at least have a cool story to tell about an otherwise depressing day.

When I heard about Paul’s good deeds, it got me thinking. I don’t know what comes next, but I do know this: It’s dark right now, but there are always going to be good people like Paul Rudd who are going to be there to help. We (Kamala voters) need to do that for each other right now. Look for the helpers when you need one. When you’re feeling up to it, try to be a helper for someone else who’s struggling. There are still almost 68 million people in this country who came out to do the right thing. We have to find each other and stick together because it’s the only way that we’ll get through whatever the next four years are going to bring.

Paul Rudd on Ant Man: I had to work out & eat perfectly, just to look kind of bad

Paul Rudd is one of those ageless beauties in the same vein as Rob Lowe or Dolly Parton. It doesn’t matter how much time has passed; they age so flawlessly that they appear to be practically ageless. Le sigh. Rudd joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) back in 2015, playing Scott Lang aka Ant-Man. Even if you don’t know anything about the movies or the comics, you could probably deduct that they are (generally) about attractive, regular people going through something that turns them into hot, buff people with superpowers.

Throughout the years, there have been actors and actresses that have spoken out about the crazy training and diets they had to do in order to get and stay in shape for their action-hero roles. Hugh Jackman famously consumes 8,000 calories a day while working out nonstop in order to get into shape to play Wolverine. It never occurred to me that Rudd, the beautiful, beautiful man that he is, was also working really hard at getting buff in order to play Ant-Man. But, he was, and for him, it was not quite the rewarding experience he thought it would be. Before we go on, I want to give a gentle TW that Rudd discusses body image issues in the podcast interview that’s quoted.

During a recent appearance on the Off Menu podcast, Paul detailed what he had to go through diet-wise to portray Ant-Man in the MCU films — and, surprise surprise, it does not sound even remotely worth it.

“When I was having to train for the Ant-Man movie, and I was on a very restrictive diet, my reward was sparkling water,” he revealed. “That’s how horrible that diet was.”

“I was like, ‘Alright, I’m gonna have some sparkling water now, I’ve earned it.’ Yeah, it was great. It wasn’t flavored, I wasn’t gonna go crazy.”

Paul also explained that he adhered to the diet for all of his work in the MCU films, which comprised of eating “really boring food, every time, over and over again” — and that adhering to it was “actually not too hard” once he was in it. But Paul also said that, even though he engaged in workout regimens in a similar manner as his MCU costars, he could never quite achieve the same results as his colleagues.

“I worked out harder than anyone, I would eat better than everyone, and I looked worse than all of them,” he admitted. “I had to work out all the time, eat perfectly, just to look kind of bad. Not even like great.”

“I remember on Endgame, Chris Hemsworth would always have these Tupperware containers and he’s eating this gruel of just a mash of stuff,” he further recalled. “He’s working out, and then you stand next to a guy like that, and I just think, ‘Well, what’s the point of any of this?’”

“Why am I killing myself when that can exist, and then I look at myself and this exists. I can never achieve that…That was the good thing that it was Ant-Man, it isn’t Thor.”

“But I tried to work out, and it didn’t work.”

[From Buzzfeed]

I really feel for what Rudd went through, especially because he was comparing himself to colleagues much younger than he is (for example, there is a 13 year age gap between Rudd and Hemsworth). There’s also the fact that everyone’s body is different and what works for some does not work for all. Even if our bodies need the same types of healthy fuel, we’re still all built differently. I’ve also learned that the older I get, the more I need to make sure I eat enough because weight loss is no longer the catch-all “eat less, exercise more.” Sometimes, the more you exercise, the more your body needs you to eat for fuel or else it will go into starvation mode and stubbornly hold onto weight. But anyway, Paul Rudd seems to be an all-around genuinely decent person and I enjoy him as Ant-Man and, most recently, in Only Murders in the Building. FWIW, I recently rewatched Clueless and he truly looks just about the exact same as he does now, so he must be doing something right.

Paul Rudd appeared in a fan’s video after meeting them at a Taylor Swift concert

Paul Rudd is an Internet Boyfriend and while he isn’t that cute to me, he’s also one of the few celebrities that I genuinely believe is probably a pretty nice person. Also, the joke is that he looks forever young because he’s nice, but he definitely gets professional help with that–most celebrity men do. And it’s not just getting good sleep like he says. Anyway, Paul was at a New Jersey Taylor Swift concert back in May when he met a young musician Claud Mintz, who goes by Claud. Claud is signed to the same label as Taylor’s friend and opener Phoebe Bridgers, and they are up-and-coming. Claud has a song called “Paul Rudd” on their latest album. Paul listened to Claud’s songs and loved what he heard. Long story short, he ended up starring in a music video for Claud’s song “A Good Thing.” In it Paul plays a bumbling, lonely mailman. It’s a cute little video and a sweet story–Claud says it was the best day of their life.

How Paul and Claud met: Taylor Swift unwittingly helped Paul Rudd land his latest role as a loveless, bumbling mailman. His cameo in the music video for “A Good Thing” came about when the artist, Claud Mintz — who goes by Claud — met him at Swift’s The Eras Tour earlier this year. “I, like, randomly met him in passing at the Eras Tour, at the Taylor Swift concert. I walked kind of like past the VIP tent,” Claud explained in a TikTok posted July 16. “I was like, ‘Paul Rudd, this sounds kind of weird but there’s a song on my album. The song’s called ‘Paul Rudd.’ I hope this isn’t weird.’”

How Paul got involved in the music video: “He was, like, so nice about it and he gave me his email and he was like, ‘Send it to me. Like, I’d love to hear your album,’” Claud said. Claud sent Rudd their album, “Supermodels,” and explained that track eight, titled “Paul Rudd,” is named after him because “it’s me, like, trying to envision myself as, like, this cool, confident, charismatic, lovable character that you play.” That’s how Rudd comes across in real life, too, Claud said. But Claud believes they often don’t have those same qualities. Claud adds Rudd told them he “loved the album.”

This opened the door for Claud to invite Rudd to the filming of their music video: “Would you ever consider stopping by?” He ended up staying for “the whole entire day,” Claud said. “He stayed for, like, five hours and we shot, like, that whole scene and danced outside and it was the best day of my life,” they said.

[From USA Today]

Am I surprised that Paul is apparently a Swiftie? I have to say I am. But it’s charming that he wanted to be a part of this music video. I’m sure that he recognized his involvement would raise Claud’s profile and help more people discover them. They are very similar-sounding to Phoebe Bridgers, if that’s your thing. The music video is fun (there is also a cute cat in it) and the song is catchy. Claud makes it seem like his visit to the music video set wasn’t planned but I think it must have been because he has a costume and everything! It is cool that Paul stayed for so long when I’m sure his scenes were quick to shoot. I like that Paul doesn’t take himself too seriously and is happy to be the comedic relief. He doesn’t give off vibes of having a big ego, which is rare in his industry. His reputation as a sweet guy is seemingly well-earned. Now if we could just figure out who his aesthetician is, then we’d be cooking with gas.

Paul Rudd gets asked to take photos with dogs & kids: I always feel bad for the child

As Kaiser reported, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is getting the worst reviews in Marvel history. But they’re continuing with the full-blown press tour and it’s working, because the film opened with semi-Marvel numbers at the box-office. The good news, as I see it, is at least we get more Paul Rudd interviews. I’m not madly in love with Paul, but I find him relaxed, funny and he talks about innocuous stuff on occasion that makes for a nice break from the news cycle. Like snapping pics with dogs and kids, which Paul said is a thing. Only they don’t actually want their picture taken with him, their parents do. So Paul feels bad but being Paul, he does it anyway.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania offers a look into the life of titular hero Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). He strolls the streets of San Francisco basking in post-Endgame glory, receiving well wishes from grateful fans, occasionally mistaken for Spider-Man and being asked to pose for photos… with dogs.

Believe it or not, as Rudd reveals, the latter actually occurs in real life.

“It’s happened more than once,” Rudd, 53, told us. “Dogs, babies.”

Rudd doesn’t seem to mind all the pooch pics, but admitted he’s conflicted when adult fans ask him to pose with their very young kids.

“I always feel bad for [the] child. When you have a parent who’s like, ‘Will you take a picture with my kid?’ And it’s some 3-year-old who doesn’t have any idea [who I am]…

“I always think, ‘This poor kid. This kid doesn’t want to take a picture with me. Not only does he have no clue who I am, even if he did, he’d clearly [rather be doing something else].’ Just let him go. So my heart goes out to the kids that get kind of pushed into taking pictures with me.”

[From Yahoo!]

I know what Paul is talking about with the kid. The parent uses the kid as the excuse to get the shot. They really want to be the one in the photo, but think if they ask for the kid, they won’t look like they’re geeking out over the celebrity. However, eventually the child will learn who the person is and they’ll have that photo to show their friends. I may or may not be speaking from experience. Dogs are ingenious though, how have I never thought of that?

Speaking of dogs, Paul was recently called upon to adopt a shelter dog . The dog, renamed Pawl Ruff, became a viral sensation when somebody noted a resemblance (that person was not me). Although the shelter never expected Paul to adopt him, they wanted him to know about it, so they tried to get ahold of his publicists. (Paul famously does not have a Twitter.) No word on whether Paul knows of Pawl but the good news is the latter found a home and is happy and settling in.

While making love connections between pets and people today, we discovered one of our dogs is meant to be with Paul Rudd.

We have nicknamed him Pawl Ruff.

Paul doesn’t have a Twitter handle, but @AntMan does.

And honestly, what is more heroic than adopting a shelter pet? pic.twitter.com/Q0onM8dvw9

Anti-vaxxer Evangeline Lilly wore Giambattista Valli to the ‘Ant-Man’ premiere

It’s sort of funny how effective the Marvel machinery is at shutting down some of their problematic stars. Nary a whisper was uttered about Letitia Wright’s anti-vaxx views or her vaccination status when it came time to promote Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. So it is with Evangeline Lilly as well – Lilly is part of the Ant-Man franchise, and here she is at last night’s LA premiere. In 2020, she refused to quarantine during the pandemic and made a huge deal about how Covid wouldn’t kill anyone and people were overreacting. Last year, she attended that unhinged anti-vaxx rally in Washington too. And once again, none of that will be brought up during the promotion of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Her dress here is Giambattista Valli and it’s awful! Wrong color, wrong hair, wrong silhouette, wrong vibe.

Here’s Paul Rudd and his wife Julie Yaeger. I would hate to be married to him, honestly. He seems like a very decent, normal man, but I couldn’t be married to a man who never ages!

Michelle Pfeiffer in Saint Laurent. My favorite look of this carpet. She’s a goddess.

Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, plus their son Dylan. Catherine wore Carolina Herrera. I generally dislike these kinds of “mullet dresses,” but Catherine is pulling this off. Dylan looks more like his mom than his dad too.

Kathryn Newton in Rodarte. Eh. I hope this wasn’t her first choice.

SMA Paul Rudd just hangs with family & does crosswords when he’s not working

Paul_Rudd_SMA

We have a tradition in the Hecate household. Every year when the Sexiest Man Alive issue of People comes out, I cut out a picture of Prof Hecate’s face and tape it over whomever’s on the cover. But so I don’t think I will this year because when Prof H heard Paul Rudd got the title, he seemed as excited as I was. Everyman respects Everyman. Don’t get me wrong, I think Paul’s hot (I happen to find my husband hot, too) but he’s approachable hot. As cliché as it sounds, he’s the kind of guy with whom you could have a conversation. And going by his SMA interview, that’s exactly the kind of guy he is. According to Paul, when he’s not at movie premieres or awards shows, he’s hanging out at home in his gym shorts and hotel slippers doing the crosswords and making the school run.

When he’s not being sexy, Paul Rudd is a busy man.

The actor, 52, who was just crowned PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2021, is re-teaming with Will Ferrell for the new Apple TV series The Shrink Next Door and taking on one of Hollywood’s most treasured franchises with the upcoming movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

But home in New York City with his wife of 18 years, Julie, 53, and their kids Jack, 17, and Darby, 12, is Rudd’s happy place.

“When I think about myself, I think of myself as a husband and a father — like, I’m that,” he tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “I just hang out with my family when I’m not working. That’s what I kind of like the most.”

Rudd, whose at-home attire consists of “T-shirts and gym shorts — with hotel slippers,” insists his days off from work are pretty typical. “I get up and take my kids to school,” he says. “If my wife was sitting next to me, she would do a spit take and then say, ‘Okay.’ But I do, I do. I’ll try to do some form of exercise and read a bit, you know, maybe do a crossword puzzle. I like the idea of sitting and just taking in things.”

Despite his new title, Rudd has stayed grounded over the years because he’s “never really felt as if I’ve earned anything,” he says. “This is all a job. I don’t put any false importance on it. It’s all kind of fleeting and unimportant. My life and my day-to-day is the real stuff. And my family, they don’t let anything slide. If anything, they go hard into the opposite, which is the way it should be.”

[From People]

Ah bless him. Prof. H would say he takes the kids to school too. But when you can count your efforts on one hand… I kid! Normally I would accuse a high-earning actor of trying to peddle this “aw shucks” homebody image but I feel like it fits Paul. Everything about him suggests he does hang out with his wife and kids and shuffles around in slippers he pinched from some fancy hotel Marvel put him up in. I also think that all of that has to do with Paul not putting, “any false importance” on being an actor. It’s a job and he does what he needs to to keep earning money. My mother would say that Paul “has his priorities in order.”

Later in the interview Paul said his daughter Darby has discovered Friends. He said he hadn’t watched the show in a while but seeing the episodes now brought back all these memories. So he started sharing all these stories from the show. But Darby was unimpressed with his secondary status, letting him know, “Well, you’re not Joey [Matt LeBlanc].” No, but he was Mike, who got to marry the best Friend!
