Assaults Crime Esme Bianco Evan Rachel Wood Lawsuits Marilyn Manson

Marilyn Manson settles rape lawsuit, victim cites trial’s lack of anonymity

Since 2021, more than a dozen women, including actresses Evan Rachel Wood and Esmé Bianco, have come forward to accuse Marilyn Manson (née Brian Warner) of rape, sexual assault and battery, human trafficking, abuse, exploitation, and more. Many of his accusers spoke to Rolling Stone in 2021 and several have filed legal actions against him. Wood spoke out about her abuse in the docuseries “Phoenix Rising” and became so afraid of retribution from Manson that she gave primary custody of her 10-year-old son to his dad, Jamie Bell.

Bianco, who also claimed that Manson violated California human trafficking laws, settled with him outside of court back in January 2023. One of the women that Manson allegedly abused was due to go to trial against him next week. But just like with Bianco, this lawsuit, filed by a Jane Doe, also settled before the trial started and will likely be dismissed within the next 45 days. She and another woman filed anonymously for fear of their own safety. Jane Doe #1 spoke out, saying that she feared losing her anonymity if it had gone to trial, citing the threats, harassment, and intimidation she’s received over the past few years.

Doe’s suit, filed in 2021, alleged that the singer, whose real name is Brian Warner, raped her and deprived her of food, sleep, and a sense of safety. She claimed he threatened to “bash her head in” if she reported the abuse, which she said occurred in 2011.

“I was fully prepared for trial and never in a million years thought I would ever settle, but over the past two-and-a-half years I have silently endured threats, bullying, harassment and various forms of intimidation that have intensified over the past few weeks,” Doe says in a statement to Rolling Stone. “Marilyn Manson attended my deposition, and I was forced to answer seven hours of aggressive questioning with him staring at me from across the table. I’ve been told that this almost never happens, as it’s cruel, and that a main reason for it would be to intimidate and inflict emotional distress on a victim.

“I never cared about money and only ever wanted justice, but if we had gone to trial, I could have lost my right to anonymity and been victim-blamed on a large and public scale,” she adds. “Most importantly I could have risked losing the freedom to tell my story, and that is worth more than anything in the world.”

The terms of the settlement are not public. “Brian is pleased that, just as previous lawsuits were abandoned without payment or settled for pennies on the dollar, this plaintiff has now agreed to drop her suit in exchange for an insurance payment representing a fraction of her demands and far less than the cost to Brian of proceeding to trial,” Warner’s attorney, Howard King, says in a statement.

“If any other victims are reading this,” Doe says, “please know that you are loved and supported even if it doesn’t feel that way, and that in spite of everything I’ve been through I don’t for one second regret speaking up.”

“I am honored to have supported Ms. Doe,” Doe‘s lawyer, Wolf, says. “My law firm stands with those who bravely push back against misconduct in all forms, especially by high-profile, powerful men. We are dedicated to fighting for justice, no matter how long it takes. You are not alone.”

Another lawsuit by another Jane Doe, alleging years of grooming and abuse that began when she was a minor, is ongoing and remains the only outstanding legal action against Warner. The other Doe claims she first met Warner 1995 when she was 16 years old. She alleged that members of Warner’s band watched him sexually assault her. He maintained contact with her, according to her suit, over many years, and when she was 19, he “perpetuated his grooming, manipulation, exploitation and sexual assault of Plaintiff” and allegedly coerced her into sex. Through his attorney, Warner denied the allegations.

I think it’s very brave for Wood, Bianco, the Jane Does, and every other woman to speak out about what happened to them. Reading some of the things he allegedly did to them is absolutely horrific. It’s so infuriating that after all that these women went through, they’re still being harassed and intimidated. I don’t blame them for settling to preserve their anonymity and help ensure their safety. This reminds me of what Amber Heard went through in the court of public opinion during her trial(s) with Johnny Depp. All it takes is one charismatic abuser with a fan base and a huge PR budget and suddenly, the lines of victimhood are blurred. I hope Jane Doe and the other women who suffered by Manson’s hands find peace and recovery.

Evan Rachel Wood Jamie Bell Marilyn Manson

Evan Rachel Wood handed over primary custody of her son to Jamie Bell

In January 2021, Evan Rachel Wood named Marilyn Manson as her abuser. Before then, ERW had spoken and written about the abuse she suffered from a boyfriend, including intimate-partner violence and rape. Once ERW named Manson, she spoke and wrote in more detail, including the threats he made to release photos and videos he took of her where she was drugged and worse. After ERW named Manson, other victims came forward and told their stories, although at least one of them did recant her story (for what I imagine was a hefty payoff). There are several different avenues through which Manson’s victims are attempting to get justice and it’s all pretty complicated – Billboard has a pretty thorough timeline here, if you’re interested. Well, ERW has been dealing with the aftermath of Manson’s abuse for decades, but it’s ramped up significantly in the past two years. She moved out of LA with her son and there was a custody kerfuffle with Jamie Bell last year. Now it looks like Evan has agreed that Bell needs to have primary custody of their son and it’s all about Manson.

Evan Rachel Wood has ‘handed over primary custody of her son’ to ex Jamie Bell due to fears she could be putting her child in danger by residing with him – after ex Marilyn Manson made alleged threats against the child, reports The Blast. According to legal documents obtained by the publication, the actress, 35, has agreed for son Jack, 9, to ‘primarily’ live with Bell, 36, in Los Angeles. She currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee, and has previously been fighting to keep her son out of LA.

In the filing, Wood and Bell have agreed their son will ‘primarily live with (him) in Los Angeles, (Wood) shall have custody of Jack one (1) extended weekend per month from Friday, after school or 10:00 a.m.’ Wood will also have custody of Jack for holidays such as Spring Break.

In July 2022, Bell claimed the pair had shared ‘equal custody of Jack for seven years before Wood began keeping Jack from him’ – a claim she denied. Sources tell the publication Wood is ‘extremely afraid of putting her son in danger’ – 17 months after she claimed in a court declaration Manson, 54, told her he would ‘f**k’ her then eight-year-old son – Manson denied the claim.

Manson has faced claims of sexual abuse and human trafficking. More than a dozen women, including Wood, accuse him of abuse – accusations Manson has denied.

Wood has allegedly spoken of her fears of retaliation from the singer, saying in custody court: ‘I am a key witness in a pending criminal investigation. In connection with the investigation, I allege that I was the victim of torture, rape, and pedophilic grooming by an intentionally known public figure. I am extremely afraid of the alleged offender. I have suffered a severe, traumatic physical and emotional injury at his hands, and I am afraid that he will seek retribution against me for testifying by harming me, our son, and members of our family.’

It was also claimed that Wood alleges she was told ‘directly by investigators’ that her family’s safety was at risk.

Bell is said to have filed documents with the court claiming Wood was ‘keeping their son from him’, that it ‘shouldn’t matter what was going on with Manson’ and that the pair should share custody of their son in LA. He wrote: ‘Whatever fears Evan may have regarding third parties should have nothing to do with me or custody of our son. I do not even want to think of the short- and long-term psychological harm Evan might be inflicting upon Jack with this kind of talk and my prolonged separation from him.’

Wood responded, denying she had kept Jack from Bell and expressed her ‘real and deep concerns’ regarding her and Jack’s safety should the pair reside in LA. The new custody arrangement was signed and filed with the LA County Courts.

[From The Daily Mail]

I feel sorry for both Evan and Jamie, and their kid too. I can totally understand how Evan thought she was doing the right thing by getting the hell out of LA and out of Manson’s immediate zone. But I also agree that Evan probably violated whatever custodial agreement was already in place with Jamie. It’s horrible that it’s come to this, where Jamie will be the primary custodial parent while Evan is still dealing with all of this bullsh-t from Manson. Don’t forget, Manson is SUING Evan too, because she spoke out about what he did to her.

Evan Rachel Wood split with Jamie because she’s ‘edgy’ & really into being a mom

wenn20813156

Many of us were really, really surprised last week when Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell announced their separation. They seemed to make so much sense as a couple. Their baby isn’t even one year old. They were super-cute hipster/granola types but it WORKED. So, obviously, the rumor mill has been churning away, trying to explain what happened. Many rumors have gone in the direction I was expecting – I said last week that the vibe I was getting was that the separation was HER call, that she was the one “over it.” One of those rumors? That Evan – who came out as bisexual several years ago – hooked up with Michelle Rodriguez after an event a few weeks ago. I didn’t even see that rumor in the American tabloids, but Evan slammed it hard – she went off on Twitter, writing in part:

“I have never even said ‘hello’ to Michelle Rodriguez. I think its convenient someone chose to make up the story now and not that night… This is “journalism” at its lowest. Complete lies made up to exploit a public separation, as if that isn’t hard enough. Disgusting.”

[Via ERW’s Twitter]

Fair enough. I’m willing to believe that this was just a “make up a rumor based on two actresses being famously bisexual” thing. But I will say this – I will think less of ERW if she keeps on going off about the “rumors” via Twitter. She’s not Angelina/Charlize/Gwyneth. By tweeting about it, she’s continuing the story… which would have died anyway, because who really cares?

Meanwhile, People Mag had the weirdest, most dog-whistle-y story I think I’ve ever read. The headline was all about how Evan is super into motherhood and being cool, but the story reads like… I don’t know, it feels like People is trying to say that Evan is in fact exploring potential lesbian relationships but People doesn’t want to come out and say it.

In ending their marriage, Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell simply realized they have different priorities, now and for the future, a source tells PEOPLE.

“Nothing dramatic happened. They are friends and will continue to parent their son together. They have been friends for years and are happier this way than being married,” the source says.

The couple welcomed a son last July, and he became the focus, the source adds. “Evan loves being a mom. After her son was born, he has been her No. 1 priority. The marriage always came in second. They have different goals for the future and want to pursue them separately.”

As for Wood’s romantic future, the source adds: “Evan is very edgy and adventurous and wants to find a partner that she can share that with.”

For now, as she copes with the breakup, Wood, 26, is leaning on her friends – among them, Ellen Page. The two are BFFs and will play sisters in the upcoming film Into the Forest. On May 20, the former True Blood actress joined Page and a group of buddies, including Sara Gilbert and Linda Perry, for a night of live music at the Sayers Club in Los Angeles. They were seated next to Demi Moore, who was there to watch her daughter Rumer Willis perform.

“Evan seemed like she was in a good mood,” an onlooker tells PEOPLE. “She was laughing and talking to the group about wanting to sing at Sayers sometime soon.”

Wood spent Memorial Day weekend with designer Phoebe Dahl and model and deejay Ruby Rose at their home in L.A. Wood relaxed by playing with the engaged couple’s pet pig Hazel. The three also hung out together at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s “An Evening with Women” charity event in Beverly Hills on May 10. Meanwhile, Bell, 28, was last seen in Louisiana on May 14 filming the reboot of the new Fantastic Four movie. He plays the Thing.

[From People]

My theory: People Mag got a tip and they couldn’t get a hard confirmation. Something about Evan and Ellen Page. Which… I mean, I LOVED Evan and Jamie Bell together, but if Evan and Ellen Page got together? OMG. Cutest/hottest couple ever. Let’s see if Evan goes off about this on Twitter.

Amy Poehler’s Book Cover and Synopsis Revealed

Amy Poehler book Yes, Please

Amy Poehler’s memoir-esque book Yes, Please will be released Oct. 28, 2014.

Amy Poehler is releasing a book in October called Yes, Please (also known as “what I’m getting every single person I know for Christmas.” You’re welcome.).

-Sadness: Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell have split after nearly two years of marriage. I like them both and wish them well!

-A new video clip shows One Direction’s squeaky clean Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik smoking pot on their way to a concert. And so it begins…

Hayden Panettiere is reportedly expecting her first child with fiance Wladimir Klitschko. She’s actually the best thing about Nashville (which pains me to say when Tami Taylor is also on that show, but it’s true.)

-Instagram took down a photo of a sweatshirt Scout Willis designed that features naked women, so she protested the social network site by walking around New York topless.

-The Hollywood Reporter asked Robert Pattinson if he still talks to Kristen Stewart“Oh, yeah,” he said blithely.

Tom Cruise’s new Edge of Tomorrow movie is tracking soft in the US. Should Johnny Depp start making space for him in Hollywood jail?

-Not tracking soft is Angelina Jolie‘s Maleficent, which I’m seeing tonight. Something tells me I’m going to walk out of that thing with a cheekbone complex.

Gwyneth Paltrow says that being a celebrity who faces online criticism is like being in a war. Oh god. She just makes it so easy, doesn’t she?

Katy Perry has scored Cosmopolitan’s first-ever global cover, which means she’ll be gracing the July cover of all 62 editions.

-I really like this article about how Seth Rogen proved Washington Post writer Ann Hornaday’s point about Elliot Rodger. Yes, Hornaday could have chosen a better example of misogynist pop culture than Neighbors (how about Mixology, which I stopped watching after one episode when it became clear the main character’s catchphrase would be “I’m going to smash her out!”), but Rogen’s knee-jerk reaction on Twitter was bad form. Also, as a Washington Post editor tweeted today, “Dear celebrities criticizing WaPo: Your objections would seem more sincere if you accepted our offer to respond in more than 140 characters.”

Levar Burton has started a Kickstarter to bring back Reading Rainbow. Get on that, parent types.

Monica Lewinsky‘s full essay in Vanity Fair is now online, if you were too cheap to buy the print issue.

-An Australian newspaper offered a ridiculous justification for publishing Kate Middleton‘s butt photos. As Jezebel states, “At parts, it reads like Ayn Rand does upskirt photography.”

-Here’s a good article examining the fascinating racial component of Louie. I was both confused and impressed by last episode’s flashback, in which his wife was white.

George RR Martin‘s tweet about Kimye’s wedding made me laugh out loud.

-This Ant Man news just keeps getting worse. More details about Edgar Wright’s exit suggest “Ant-Man’s tone might have been too quirky for the Marvel universe.” Um, have they not seen the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers?!

Benji Madden is reportedly madly in love with Cameron Diaz.  I’m sorry, but I just can’t take anything about a guy called Benji seriously.

Rick Ross got a new face tattoo on his chin that says “Rich Forever.” It’s about as attractive as you’d expect.

Taylor Kitsch seems to be the only person alive who is sad that a John Carter sequel will never happen.

Jonah Hill told a hilarious story about shooting a film with Morgan Freeman, who didn’t talk to him at all between takes — unless it was to banana song his name.

Tom Ford thinks Rihanna‘s Instagram account wields more power than any fashion magazine. Guess who’s about to be flooded with (even more) free stuff?

Amy Schumer‘s skit on a bachelorette disaster is beyond priceless.

-Finally, here’s our first glimpse of footage from FX’s The Strain. I’m already terrified.

Tina Fey and Jason Bateman figure prominently in the first trailer for This is Where I Leave You (though it also stars every other actor you love).

Evan Rachel Wood rants against the MPAA for ‘shaming women for enjoying sex’

wenn20813160

Back in 2010, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams were being praised by critics as early Oscar frontrunners for their performances in Blue Valentine, a film about a couple getting together and breaking up and all of the mess that comes with it. The film included a few sex scenes, including one scene in which Ryan’s character was going down on Michelle’s character. The MPAA threatened to slap the film with an NC-17 rating if the director didn’t cut or re-edit the scene. Ryan ended up defending the director’s original vision (and the whole idea of a lady getting hers) in a well-spoken argument that garnered so much attention, the MPAA had to eat their words and they ended up giving Blue Valentine an R-rating.

Well, funny thing. Charlie Countryman, the new film starring Shia LaBeouf and Evan Rachel Wood, is going through an almost identical controversy. Apparently, there is a scene in the film where Shia’s character is going down on Evan’s character. And wouldn’t you know, the MPAA is all pearl-clutchy about it again and they’re threatening Charlie Countryman with an NC-17 rating if the scene isn’t cut or re-edited. I guess the director already tried to please the ratings board by editing the scene and Evan recently saw the re-cut film. She was not amused. She went HAM via Twitter:

“After seeing the new cut of #CharlieCountryman I would like 2 share my disappointment with the MPAA, who thought it was necessary to censor a woman’s sexuality once again. The scene where the two main characters make “love” was altered because someone felt that seeing a man give a woman oral sex made people “uncomfortable” but the scenes in which people are murdered by having their heads blown off remained intact and unaltered.”

“This is a symptom of a society that wants to shame women and put them down for enjoying sex, especially when (gasp) the man isn’t getting off as well! It’s hard for me to believe that had the roles been reversed it still would have been cut OR had the female character been raped it would have been cut.

“It’s time for people to GROW UP. Accept that women are sexual. Accept that some men like pleasuring women. Accept that women don’t have to just be f–ked and say thank you…We are allowed and entitled to enjoy ourselves. It’s time we put our foot down…Thanks for listening.”

[From Evan Rachel Wood’s Twitter]

Yeah… I’m feeling Evan here. I think her points are completely and utterly valid, and she’s absolutely right. If the character was being raped or abused, I doubt the MPAA would have cared. If the genders had been reversed (if Shia was on the receiving end), the MPAA wouldn’t care. Here’s the question I still have about the MPAA: just how old are these censors? Are they, like, in their 80s? Are they all old men who get upset with the idea of a lady getting hers? Apparently, they’re equally squeamish about Michael Fassbender’s Fassdong too, because Shame ended up with the same NC-17 rating as well. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think Harvey Weinstein has the right idea – Harvey’s been engaged in a near holy war against the MPAA for years now. Keep on, Harvey.
