LeVar Burton to host and produce a show based on Trivial Pursuit

Holy Christmas, what a roller coaster. To briefly recap for anyone who didn’t follow the story: When it became apparent that Alex Trebek’s cancer was going to take him from us, eyes turned to who would host Jeopardy next. One of the first fan favorites was LeVar Burton. From the start, LeVar seemed on board with the idea. A series of guest hosts were brought in, seemingly to try out for the position. LeVar was not brought in until very late and at a very inopportune time during the Summer Olympics. As it turns out, the whole thing was just a set up to slide the ill-fated Jeopardy producer Mike Richards into the hosting position. And the show got what it deserved for that move. Even though fans were still clamoring for LeVar to take his spot at the podium, he rejected the idea, basically saying the whole experience left a bad taste in his mouth. He also said that everything happens for a reason and that he would have missed other opportunities if he had gotten the Jeopardy gig. It turns LeVar is getting his very own game show based on the Trivial Pursuit board game. LeVar’s entertainment company will be co-producing it.

LeVar Burton is returning to the game show scene!

The 64-year-old actor’s entertainment company has inked a deal with Hasbro’s content studio Entertainment One to produce a game show based on the classic game Trivial Pursuit.

“Trivial Pursuit is one of the best-known brands in the gaming universe,” Burton said in a statement released by eOne Tuesday. “I am thrilled to have partnered with Hasbro and eOne to bring this beloved game to market as a premium show for television.”

Tara Long, President of Global Unscripted Television at eOne, said the company is looking forward to working with Burton as “an iconic member of American pop culture.”

“His love for intellectual curiosity paired with his ability to connect with audiences worldwide make him the perfect partner to bring Hasbro’s beloved trivia game to households in a new and exciting way,” Long said in the statement.

My father and I were unstoppable as a Trivial Pursuit team, in case LeVar is looking for contestants. There isn’t much to go on as far as what this will look like, how it will be played or even when it will be aired. But that’s not really the message here. The message is that LeVar came out on top. And honestly, this is so much better. As some of us have said a couple of times, whoever fills the Jeopardy slot will forever live in Alex’s shadow. That’s fine, but now LeVar doesn’t have to work his way out from under that. He gets to forge this territory all on his own *desperately trying to refrain from a Star Trek tagline pun here*. Trivial Pursuit is well known so there’s already cross-platform marketing. And Hasbro money to boot. If all of those fans who signed the Change.org petition to get him on Jeopardy show up for this, it’s an instant hit.

I’m sorry LeVar had to go through that BS with Jeopardy. It sounds like the host position was something he wanted. Both how it was handled and the eventual outcome hurt him. It would me too. For him to take that and turn it into his own trivia-based show, that he will design, host and produce is such a graceful win. I don’t watch many game shows, but I’ll give this one a try. I support most thing LeVar does. And besides, I have a Trivial Pursuit crown to protect.

Jeopardy LeVar Burton

LeVar Burton wouldn’t host Jeopardy now even if they offered it to him

So many of us have been swept up in the drama around the new host of Jeopardy. Not the stuff with Mike Richards, because that was a terrible idea from the start, but before that. I have long been a big fan of LeVar Burton. So when fans called for him to host and he said it was something he wanted, I was all for it. I was really perturbed when they finally scheduled him during the Olympics. In the end, with the sloppiness with which Jeopardy handled it, I wished LeVar would wash his hands of the whole situation as it ended up being beneath him. Fortunately, LeVar has confirmed to The Daily Beast that he’s done with Jeopardy. During an interview promoting his second book, , LeVar admitted he would say no at this point, even if they came a-callin’. Below are his comments on that and a few of his Star Trek compatriots.

On his mother, Erma Gene Christian: Every time I have the opportunity to speak my mother’s name, I do. I am the man I am because she was the woman she was, and that’s the truth. So, everything that I’ve ever done in the field of literacy is done in her name and in her honor because she was my first teacher. I grew up in a house where it was expected that you read. We read three daily newspapers when I was a kid. Reading was important, and it was communicated as an important activity, an important thing for us to do, by my mom.

On William Shatner (Capt Kirk): The Shat went to space and came back safe. It’s a good day!

On Brent Spiner (Data): We genuinely love one another. I think that without really trying we’ve demonstrated over the years how much we mean to one another

On James Doohan (Scotty): I had a great time with Jimmy. The storyline had nothing to do with how we got along, I have to say. You know, I tend to forget how much of a dick Geordi was in ‘Relics!’

On hosting Jeopardy: I’d say, ‘No. You’ve got to be kidding me! You’re out of your mind. Goodbye!’

I want to make it clear, for the record, that I’m really happy with the way things worked out. I was disappointed to not get the job, but I’m the sort of person, I believe that everything happens for a reason. And if I didn’t get that job, that meant it wasn’t supposed to be for me, and I accepted that almost instantly and willingly. I know that the opportunities that are in front of me right now wouldn’t have come my way had I gotten the job, so I’m certain that this has worked out better for me than I could ever have imagined.

[From The Daily Beast via Yahoo]

I put in the quote about LeVar’s mother because of his statement, “Every time I have the opportunity to speak my mother’s name, I do.” I don’t know if that’s a well-known compliment but it’s the first I’ve heard it and I love it. I actually just lost somebody very dear to me from my childhood.’m having to explain who she was to newer friends. I should have spoken her name every opportunity I had. I also appreciate that he mentioned newspapers. People tease me for still getting a physical newspaper, but I find I read it cover to cover while I only read parts of one online.

As for the Jeopardy portion, I’m glad LeVar made peace with it. I didn’t see his episodes, so I don’t know how he performed. I did read a breakdown of why he wasn’t the best choice given both his celeb status and, ironically, the fan swell and expectation to make him host. The author contended that since Jeopardy is supposed to be about the contestants and the game, LeVar’s celebrity would overshadow everything else. I also believe the second part of Levar’s comment, that there were better opportunities he may have had to pass up because of a Jeopardy contract. He probably would have been a good Jeopardy host, I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed him more than Mayim Bialik, but he’ll shine somewhere else. I’m upset that he got hurt, but I’m thrilled that everyone was reminded how beloved LeVar Burton is. He’ll end up so much better off than he would as host of Jeopardy, I know it.

The Maleficent Premiere Delivers Extra Drama

Maleficent Angelina Jolie

The camera loves Angelina Jolie’s face in Maleficent. And her teeth. There are so many teeth shots, guys! (Photos: Disney Enterprises, Inc.)

-I saw Maleficent last night. It’s wildly uneven (critics seem to agree), but Angelina is pretty damn great in it and was clearly having a blast. And the director certainly recognized how much the camera loves her; I stopped counting how many tight, lingering closeups of her face we’re treated to. Even with the not great reviews, it’s expected to open at No. 1 this weekend.

-Brad Pitt was punched in the face by a stupid prankster at last night’s Maleficent premiere. This is the same idiot who stuck his head up America Ferrera‘s dress at Cannes and attempted to kiss Will Smith.

-Speaking of the Maleficent premiere, the stars stayed true to their characters with their style. Angelina Jolie embraced Maleficent’s darkness in an inky Versace, while Elle Fanning went full princess.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s honeymoon in Ireland sounds weirdly normal and low-key. They have been spotted mountain biking, having a picnic, drinking Guinness at a pub, and going to the movies.

-Also, Kim officially changed her name — on Twitter, anyway.

Madonna got out of jury duty this week with a doctor’s note. Too bad she then blew her cover by posting all her fun adventures on Instagram.

-In a new HBO movie, Robert De Niro talks about the complex relationship he had with his late father, an openly-gay painter.

George Clooney and fiancée Amal Alamuddin‘s enjoyed a romantic date in Venice, just in case you didn’t already hate life.

-As good as Hannibal is, I always struggle to watch it because it’s just so damn bleak and nihilistic. At least the cast looks like they’re having fun in this new gag reel.

Mindy Kaling spoke to the graduates at the Harvard Law School Class Day yesterday, where she referenced Legally Blonde and “noted drunk driver Justin Bieber.”

-Speaking of Justin, he reportedly shoved a girl at a club in Cannes and had to be restrained. Charming.

-Also, he reportedly hooked up with model Adriana Lima when in Cannes.

-Reading Rainbow meets its $1M Kickstarter goal in less than a day, makes Levar Burton cry.

Cindy McCain is not impressed with GOOPie for comparing her online abuse to war, tweeting “Gweneth Paltrow is a joke.”

-DVR alert: Fox is burning off the remaining four episodes of Enlisted starting this Sunday. Rumours of just how close it came to being renewed are doubly depressing.

-Meanwhile, Fox chairman Kevin Reilly announced he’s leaving the network, which is a shame. This is the guy who tried to abolish the antiquated pilot season, and it was a good plan. Instead of each network making an episode of 20 or so shows every season and then only ordering a handful, he wanted Fox to focus on just a few shows and have time to tweak them, like HBO. That’s probably why the Gotham trailer looks better than anything else coming to TV this fall.

-In other geeky TV news, I really liked this article on how current sitcoms are suffering from a lack of conflict.

Marilyn Manson is joining the Sons of Anarchy cast, which actually makes a lot of sense.

Justin Timberlake sparked controversy with an Instagram pic of himself praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

Prince Harry has been busy these past few days, playing soccer with some adorable school kids, wearing top hats, making pizza with children and just being generally awesome.

Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino might be dating, fulfilling his lifelong dream.

-Good on Orange Is the New Black’s Laverne Cox for landing the cover of Time.

-I’m not getting my hopes up about Hulu being in talks to resurrect Community.  It’s still way too early for that.

-A new trailer for the Annie remake has landed.

-Speaking of trailers, here’s a new one for Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan‘s adorable rom-com What If (which was called The F Word when I saw it).

Jeremy Renner stars as journalist Gary Webb in Kill the Messenger, the first movie he’s produced. The cast is stacked!

Amy Poehler’s Book Cover and Synopsis Revealed

Amy Poehler book Yes, Please

Amy Poehler’s memoir-esque book Yes, Please will be released Oct. 28, 2014.

Amy Poehler is releasing a book in October called Yes, Please (also known as “what I’m getting every single person I know for Christmas.” You’re welcome.).

-Sadness: Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell have split after nearly two years of marriage. I like them both and wish them well!

-A new video clip shows One Direction’s squeaky clean Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik smoking pot on their way to a concert. And so it begins…

Hayden Panettiere is reportedly expecting her first child with fiance Wladimir Klitschko. She’s actually the best thing about Nashville (which pains me to say when Tami Taylor is also on that show, but it’s true.)

-Instagram took down a photo of a sweatshirt Scout Willis designed that features naked women, so she protested the social network site by walking around New York topless.

-The Hollywood Reporter asked Robert Pattinson if he still talks to Kristen Stewart“Oh, yeah,” he said blithely.

Tom Cruise’s new Edge of Tomorrow movie is tracking soft in the US. Should Johnny Depp start making space for him in Hollywood jail?

-Not tracking soft is Angelina Jolie‘s Maleficent, which I’m seeing tonight. Something tells me I’m going to walk out of that thing with a cheekbone complex.

Gwyneth Paltrow says that being a celebrity who faces online criticism is like being in a war. Oh god. She just makes it so easy, doesn’t she?

Katy Perry has scored Cosmopolitan’s first-ever global cover, which means she’ll be gracing the July cover of all 62 editions.

-I really like this article about how Seth Rogen proved Washington Post writer Ann Hornaday’s point about Elliot Rodger. Yes, Hornaday could have chosen a better example of misogynist pop culture than Neighbors (how about Mixology, which I stopped watching after one episode when it became clear the main character’s catchphrase would be “I’m going to smash her out!”), but Rogen’s knee-jerk reaction on Twitter was bad form. Also, as a Washington Post editor tweeted today, “Dear celebrities criticizing WaPo: Your objections would seem more sincere if you accepted our offer to respond in more than 140 characters.”

Levar Burton has started a Kickstarter to bring back Reading Rainbow. Get on that, parent types.

Monica Lewinsky‘s full essay in Vanity Fair is now online, if you were too cheap to buy the print issue.

-An Australian newspaper offered a ridiculous justification for publishing Kate Middleton‘s butt photos. As Jezebel states, “At parts, it reads like Ayn Rand does upskirt photography.”

-Here’s a good article examining the fascinating racial component of Louie. I was both confused and impressed by last episode’s flashback, in which his wife was white.

George RR Martin‘s tweet about Kimye’s wedding made me laugh out loud.

-This Ant Man news just keeps getting worse. More details about Edgar Wright’s exit suggest “Ant-Man’s tone might have been too quirky for the Marvel universe.” Um, have they not seen the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers?!

Benji Madden is reportedly madly in love with Cameron Diaz.  I’m sorry, but I just can’t take anything about a guy called Benji seriously.

Rick Ross got a new face tattoo on his chin that says “Rich Forever.” It’s about as attractive as you’d expect.

Taylor Kitsch seems to be the only person alive who is sad that a John Carter sequel will never happen.

Jonah Hill told a hilarious story about shooting a film with Morgan Freeman, who didn’t talk to him at all between takes — unless it was to banana song his name.

Tom Ford thinks Rihanna‘s Instagram account wields more power than any fashion magazine. Guess who’s about to be flooded with (even more) free stuff?

Amy Schumer‘s skit on a bachelorette disaster is beyond priceless.

-Finally, here’s our first glimpse of footage from FX’s The Strain. I’m already terrified.

Tina Fey and Jason Bateman figure prominently in the first trailer for This is Where I Leave You (though it also stars every other actor you love).
