Ariel Winter is gaining quite the following on Instagram these days, but we’re guessing her newfound popularity doesn’t have a whole lot to do with her acting skills…
That’s a photo Ariel posted yesterday, and as you might’ve guessed, most of the comments are about two things.
Yes, obviously we’re talking about the margaritas.
Ariel captioned the pic, “Legal frozen margarita with the sister.” She’s only 18 but she’s in Paris at the moment, so there’s no need to obsess over this photo, everyone!
We kid, of course. The real reason this pic has racked up 56,000 likes is Ariel’s boobs.
In the wake of her breast reduction surgery, the Modern Family star has been favoring a much more cleavagey look, and the Internet has responded the way it always responds to breasts.
This one hasn’t gone as viral as the photo of Ariel in a low-cut dress on Easter Sunday, but don’t worry – the comments section is still filled with grown-ups having serious discussions about an 18-year-old girl’s boobs.
Hey, if you’re a celebrity, creepy attention is better than no attention.
Even if your show is a hit, it can be tough to make the jump from actress on an ensemble sitcom to household name.
We’re guessing Ariel doesn’t mind getting a little help from her girls.
I am an unabashed fan of Mindy Kaling and The Mindy Project. TMP got really, really good in its second season, to the point where I stopped watching New Girl altogether just to focus on my love for TMP. Mindy covers the October issue of Flare to promote the third season of TMP, which starts two weeks from now. There were some concerns about whether Fox would order a third season, but in the end they did… they just ordered 15 episodes rather than a full season. But it’s fine. I hope it will be fine, because I think TMP has some of the best and funniest writing in all of current television.
As for this Flare cover interview…I’ve noticed something weird about Mindy’s profiles. It’s like journalists try to “force” her to be political, to take stands and to talk about how she’s a boss. Which is fine – she’s a boss and she’s one of the most powerful women in TV and she has political views and such. But I often feel like Mindy would rather be profiled in the traditional “fashion magazine” way, where she just gets to talk about clothes, makeup, exercise and all of that. Instead, she has to admit that she reads Politico and has opinions on abortion and sexism. You can read the full Flare piece here and here are some highlights:
She likes that The Mindy Project is “pretty”: “I think sometimes our show is seen as breezier than it is, because it looks beautiful and the people are dressed really well. On a lot of shows, the aesthetic is kind of cruddy, which seems to equal really funny, which I don’t think is correct. If you’re looking for this vérité thing, watch a documentary.”
Early TMP viewers thought the Mindy character was unlikeable: “I don’t think about it a ton, but I was surprised by how much not just men but also women felt like they wanted her to be less selfish. Because the show has this romantic aspect to it, Mindy Lahiri can’t be as edgy as I thought at the beginning.”
She worries about ratings & lack of awards: “I come from a hit show, and I am competitive and I am a perfectionist. So for me, ratings do count. Wednesday mornings, I always check, and it affects my demeanour for a while.”
TMP won’t address abortion: “It would be demeaning to the topic to talk about it in a half-hour sitcom.”
On the criticism that she’s too confident: “Of course I’m riddled with doubts like every other creative, neurotic person, but if you don’t display them all the time, you’re seen as overconfident. I’ve worked in television for 10 years straight. If I were a man, it wouldn’t be considered strange [to have confidence] at all.”
She wishes her late mother could have seen the show: “She would love the clothes so much. I had zero rebellion against my mother. I was terrified of her, and I thought she was very glamorous, and I just wanted to emulate her all the time.”
Turning 35: “Though this has been the first year I realized that if I want to have three kids, I need to get going.”
Her job is her boyfriend: “In my 20s, I was not only boy crazy, but marriage and relationship crazy. Now it’s almost the opposite. My work is so rewarding and I’m so self-centred about it that I’m kind of excited about not having to go home and ask someone about their day.”
[From Flare]
I’ve read Mindy’s book, and I tend to think she’s going to have a difficult time finding a cutesy guy to marry. I’m not throwing shade either, I just think Mindy only likes guys who are cutesy, boyish hipsters and those types of guys aren’t looking to get married right away. But I like that she’s basically saying that her job is her boyfriend, that her job fulfills her in a deep way that it’s changed the way she looks at relationships – very few women will admit that publicly, you know?
The camera loves Angelina Jolie’s face in Maleficent. And her teeth. There are so many teeth shots, guys! (Photos: Disney Enterprises, Inc.)
-I saw Maleficent last night. It’s wildly uneven (critics seem to agree), but Angelina is pretty damn great in it and was clearly having a blast. And the director certainly recognized how much the camera loves her; I stopped counting how many tight, lingering closeups of her face we’re treated to. Even with the not great reviews, it’s expected to open at No. 1 this weekend.
-Brad Pitt was punched in the face by a stupid prankster at last night’s Maleficent premiere. This is the same idiot who stuck his head up America Ferrera‘s dress at Cannes and attempted to kiss Will Smith.
-Speaking of the Maleficent premiere, the stars stayed true to their characters with their style. Angelina Jolie embraced Maleficent’s darkness in an inky Versace, while Elle Fanning went full princess.
–Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s honeymoon in Ireland sounds weirdly normal and low-key. They have been spotted mountain biking, having a picnic, drinking Guinness at a pub, and going to the movies.
-Also, Kim officially changed her name — on Twitter, anyway.
–Madonna got out of jury duty this week with a doctor’s note. Too bad she then blew her cover by posting all her fun adventures on Instagram.
-In a new HBO movie, Robert De Niro talks about the complex relationship he had with his late father, an openly-gay painter.
–George Clooney and fiancée Amal Alamuddin‘s enjoyed a romantic date in Venice, just in case you didn’t already hate life.
-As good as Hannibal is, I always struggle to watch it because it’s just so damn bleak and nihilistic. At least the cast looks like they’re having fun in this new gag reel.
–Mindy Kaling spoke to the graduates at the Harvard Law School Class Day yesterday, where she referenced Legally Blonde and “noted drunk driver Justin Bieber.”
-Speaking of Justin, he reportedly shoved a girl at a club in Cannes and had to be restrained. Charming.
-Also, he reportedly hooked up with model Adriana Lima when in Cannes.
-Reading Rainbow meets its $1M Kickstarter goal in less than a day, makes Levar Burton cry.
–Cindy McCainis not impressed with GOOPie for comparing her online abuse to war, tweeting “Gweneth Paltrow is a joke.”
-DVR alert: Fox is burning off the remaining four episodes of Enlisted starting this Sunday. Rumours of just how close it came to being renewed are doubly depressing.
-Meanwhile, Fox chairman Kevin Reilly announced he’s leaving the network, which is a shame. This is the guy who tried to abolish the antiquated pilot season, and it was a good plan. Instead of each network making an episode of 20 or so shows every season and then only ordering a handful, he wanted Fox to focus on just a few shows and have time to tweak them, like HBO. That’s probably why the Gotham trailer looks better than anything else coming to TV this fall.
-In other geeky TV news, I really liked this article on how current sitcoms are suffering from a lack of conflict.
–Marilyn Manson is joining the Sons of Anarchy cast, which actually makes a lot of sense.
–Justin Timberlake sparked controversy with an Instagram pic of himself praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
–Prince Harry has been busy these past few days, playing soccer with some adorable school kids, wearing top hats, making pizza with children and just being generally awesome.
–Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino might be dating, fulfilling his lifelong dream.
-Good on Orange Is the New Black’s Laverne Cox for landing the cover of Time.
-I’m not getting my hopes up about Hulu being in talks to resurrect Community. It’s still way too early for that.
-A new trailer for the Annie remake has landed.
-Speaking of trailers, here’s a new one for Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan‘s adorable rom-com What If (which was called The F Word when I saw it).
–Jeremy Renner stars as journalist Gary Webb in Kill the Messenger, the first movie he’s produced. The cast is stacked!

Tina Fey is crazy talented, so it’s no surprise that networks are keen to pick up any project she pitches. After 30 Rock‘s critical success, while not always reflected in the ratings, made sure that pretty much anything she touches from here on out will turn to gold.
After selling a pilot to NBC over the summer, she’s now gone and got another project greenlit by Fox. This one sounds pretty funny, and will reunite her with some old 30 Rock colleagues including Robert Carlock (who’s also in on the NBC show) and Matt Hubbard.
From Vulture:
We guess it was unlikely that NBC would snap up both of Tina Fey’s new sitcoms. It’s for the best. Everyone knows they produce more failed pilots than the French air force. While Fey’s doomsday cult comedy is headed over to NBC, Fox has officially ordered a pilot for the multi-cam pitch she co-created with Matt Hubbard and Robert Carlock, which as you might recall is about the first class of male students at a women’s college. How I Meet Your Mother‘s Pam Fryman will direct and executive produce, an idea we absolutely peacock. No, sorry. We fox it. We fox that idea very much.
Yup, I love it. In case you forgot, Tooken, her NBC show, stars Ellie Kemper and is about a woman who escapes from a doomsday cult by moving to New York. Also promising! Here’s hoping Fey has serious involvement in both and can make them as funny or funnier than 30 Rock. I still miss that show!
Or so she says, probably until the money runs out. Is that cynical? I can’t help it! In nay case, Roseanne Barr has fallen out with NBC over some bullshit. Basically, the network hired her earlier this year to create a show with Nurse Jackie showrunner Linda Wallem, but the process has been less than stellar and she’s none too pleased about it. We all know that when a celebrity is throwing a fit, there’s only one place to do it: Twitter (read from the bottom on up).
There’s some missing stuff here that she’s deleted since – stuff about how Wallem apparently went missing for seven weeks and then when she did give Roseanne a script, it was really shitty. The network apparently also wanted to throw out every joke she wrote and censor her ‘brand’. Oh man.
Yes, Roseanne does have mental health issues and she can come off as… really unstable and detached from reality at times. I don’t think her current self is her best self, but let’s not forget what an amazing feminist icon she was with the sitcom back in the day and what a talent she is underneath the rest of it. Clearly this project isn’t going to come to pass, however. So what’s she gonna do now?
my new internet tv sitcom will feature nudity, obscene language, violence politically incorrect analysis & channelling The Immutable Goddess

Star magazine truly has a bone to pick with Tori Spelling. She’s shown herself as willing to engage them in battle, and I guess they’re desperate enough to pick another fight with her. In February, the tabloid published a huge cover tale about Tori and Dean’s $300 million divorce, which Tori immediately denied. Then Tori wrote a letter on her own website about how her kids cried in the supermarket checkout line after seeing the “divorce” announcement in a screaming headline. Two weeks later, Star doubled down with yet another split story, which Tori chose to ignore.
Now Star is messing with Tori again. They’ve based their newest story on the fact that she and Dean took a roadtrip with their kids to Canada instead of flying. The family was set to film a new HGTV cabin-renovation show there for three months, so it makes some sense that they’d drive up. Then they could have their own car and take more stuff than a suitcase apiece. Plus, I can see why it would be a pain to fly with four kids in tow. Maybe the car odyssey was part of the show. Maybe they just wanted to drive, you know?
For Star, Tori and Dean driving in their car to Canada means major trouble is on the financial horizon. I’ve omitted some of this three-page story, but the gist is that Tori and Dean are completely flat broke and (of course) totally on the rocks:
“Tori and Dean are going broke,” a close family insider tells Star. “They can’t keep up with the cost of living their famous Hollywood life, and it’s taking a huge emotional toll on them.”
While publicly, the couple grin and bear the homespun nature of their family life, behind closed doors, Tori, 40, and Dean, 46, agonize over how they’re going to raise their four kids. Uprooting their busy lives for the upcoming reality show, Tori & Dean: Cabin Fever, for example, was huge strain on the family. “And the sad thing is, they barely got any money for doing that show,” the insider explains, “But they have to take any opportunity that comes their way, because they are so desperate for money.”
“Tori didn’t get her fair share of her father’s wealth,” the insider says. “She struggled a lot financially but did manage to make ends meet from doing reality shows with Dean.” But as their family size increased [they have four children], so did their expenses, and Tori was forced to come up with creative ways to bring in more money: She wrote six books, launched a jewelry line with HSN, opened a furniture store and, most recently, started a children’s clothing line. “The money from Tori’s random business vantures helped to keep them afloat,” the source says. “But it wasn’t enough to maintain their lifestyle.”
Dean, meanwhile, has happily remained a stay-at-home dad throughout most of their marriage. But in recent years, the couple’s financial situation has become so dire, Dean is trying to contribute more. “He’s now trying to build a new career as a chef to provide for their family,” the friend say. “But he hasn’t come far enough to achieve any stability.”
As for Tori, “She is desperate and at a loss as to what to do,” the pal adds. “It’s not like she can just get a normal job, because she’s a celebrity.” She recently signed on to star in (and produce) a sitcom pilot for ABC Family. If the show gets picked up, it would represent the only steady income she’s seen in years. But the odds are stacked against her. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “In TV, something like 92 percent of all shows fail.”
[From Star, print edition, October 14, 2013]
The article goes on to say that Tori and Dean lost $800,000 on real estate sales over the past five years. Their kids are approaching school age and will need (?) private schooling, and Dean pays child support to his ex. The family is living modestly now but still barely scraping by, and Candy Spelling refuses to extend them a loan: “Candy doesn’t want to hear about her children’s money issues. It embarrasses her.” It’s true that Tori only received $800,000 of her father’s fortune, but she’s been making money all along. She’s a pretty shrewd businesswoman. I think Star just hates her.
