Idris Elba on his 50s: ‘Your influences change… I’m not getting as easily influenced’

While I haven’t been a dedicated viewer/listener to Amy Poehler’s Good Hang pod, I have enjoyed the hell out of every episode I’ve listened to. She’s a great interviewer and she has an easy chemistry with every single one of her guests. In previous episodes, she’s interviewed some of her closest friends and most beloved coworkers, but in this week’s episode, she chatted with John Cena (who was a costar) and Idris Elba, who she doesn’t really know. Cena hyped Idris hard in his interview (they’re costars in Head of State), and then Idris came into the “studio” in person and he and Amy got along really well (the Idris part starts around the 9:50 mark).

The whole section about being Virgos took me OUT!! Amy is a Virgo, Idris is a Virgo, Idris questions the Virgo-ness of being a Virgo, which Amy correctly points out is a Peak Virgo trait. Then they’re both like, hey, Beyonce is a Virgo so it’s a pretty cool Virgo club, right? Which is true. Hugh Grant is also a Virgo, so are Sydney Sweeney, Chris Pine, Zendaya and like half of all lawyers. Amy called out Idris for believing in aliens “but not astrology,” lmao. They get into talking about being born in the early 1970s and growing up as Gen Xers, and what their 50s are like:

Idris Elba is getting real about some of the challenges of aging. The Heads of State actor, 52, opened up to Amy Poehler on the latest episode of her Good Hang podcast, where they discussed being in their 50s — both the good and the bad.

“I don’t love that, at this age, the age of [having] wellness and consciousness, is so upon us, yet our bodies fail us,” said Elba. Agreed Poehler, 53, “The biggest bummer,” joking in addition, “I mean, the fact that you can get hurt just getting out of bed.”

On the flip side, Elba said that for their generation, “Some of the coolest things — art, music, culture, some of the craziest world politics that set the dynamics for where we are right now — all happened when our emotions were blossoming, and our adolescence was growing.”

Another plus of his age now? “Your influences change,” Elba said later. “I think in my 30s and 40s, I was blowing with the wind a little bit with what was influencing me, what my goals were. And in the 50s, I’m like, ‘Nah. That wind has to pass around me.’ I’m not getting as easily influenced,” explained the 2018 PEOPLE Sexiest Man Alive.

At 52, Elba is also “not afraid of difficult things, or challenges that make me uncomfortable.”

“And to choose your own discomfort is like a privilege at our age,” Poehler noted, laughing. ” ‘It’s gonna be uncomfortable, but I’m gonna be in charge of it.’ “

[From People]

I’m from the microgeneration behind Gen X – Xennial – but I’ve felt my waning interest in whatever the youth-culture is at whatever moment. Like, I still like to hear the new music and dip my toe into whatever cultural discourse is happening, but yeah – I am no longer subject to being “influenced.” And yes, the “wellness” movement being pushed on people in their 40s and 50s… it sucks ass.

Amy Poehler Meghan Sussex Tina Fey

Amy Poehler made a joke about Duchess Meghan, which was really about Piers Morgan

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have been best friends for decades, and now they’re using their friendship as a basis for a joint comedy tour. I imagine the tour is a wild success – Amy and Tina are extremely funny together and they play off of each other well. The Mail got an “exclusive” from their Atlantic City show, where they made a joke about the Duchess of Sussex. The Mail’s headline is: “Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poke fun at Meghan Markle with barbed comment about her recipes.” But they published the joke in context, and Fey and Poehler are actually making a barbed comment about Piers Morgan.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poked fun at Meghan Markle during their stand-up comedy show over the weekend after the Duchess of Sussex was reprimanded by the queen of jams over her latest As Ever release. The Saturday Night Live alums took over Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 21, for their Restless Leg Tour where they threw shade at many stars including Prince Harry’s wife, Ben Affleck and Channing Tatum, according to an insider who spoke with Daily Mail.

Tina, 55, and Amy, 53, opened the show with a monologue that was similar to them hosting a past Golden Globe award show as they took the stage wearing sparkly gowns with the 30 Rock star comparing her gold dress to ‘Heidi Klum for Spirit of Halloween’ and jewelry from the ‘Disney Pandora menopause collection.’

‘Ben Affleck is not here. He’s home going through his contacts looking for more Jennifers to bother,’ Tina said. Amy added, ‘Nicole Kidman is not here tonight. She’s too busy being in every single movie and TV show in her name.’

‘Leonardo DiCaprio is not here. I assume because Amy and I have combined age of 105,’ Tina continued their opening speech.

‘Meghan Markle is not here tonight. She’s putting flower sprinkles on cookies, and Piers Morgan is furiously rage masturbating about it,’ the Parks and Recreation star snided, referring to the UK journalist who mocks Prince Harry and Meghan.

Continuing their celebrity roast, they told the audience that they argue with each other over how they would ‘cook Channing Tatum.’ Amy insisted she would ‘dice him up and pan fry him over an open flame,’ while Tina suggested she would ‘slow braise’ and top ‘olive oil with lemon,’ and then ‘save his skin to make merkins so that no spiders get into our vaginas at night.’

Although there were no celebs in the audience, Amy and Tina praised the ‘white women’ in the crowd as the theater lights came on and the comedians gave a sigh of relief that it was ‘finally a safe place for you.’

[From The Daily Mail]

How is “she’s putting flower sprinkles on cookies” a barbed comment again? The barbed comment is about Piers Morgan and his creepy obsession with all things Meghan. Not to mention, Piers’ wife is obsessed with Meghan too. Anyway, this reminded me of the time that Amy and Tina made a mild joke about Taylor Swift and she freaked out for years over it and said there was a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women. Also: Meghan recently quoted Fey at the Time 100 summit.

Amy Poehler Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama loves HGTV, especially ‘House Hunters’ & ‘Rock the Block’

Last week, Amy Poehler’s interview with Michelle Obama was released. Amy interviewed MO for her podcast Good Hang, and I’m including the interview at the end of the post. Michelle is a big podcaster now as well, and she’s been returning the favor by doing more pod interviews this year. I actually think MO is in her IDGAF Era, which happened as soon as Trump “won” the election – Michelle was just like, “you know what, I don’t give a sh-t anymore, I’m going to say whatever I want.” Well, as always, MO is just like us. On Good Hang, Michelle revealed something about herself which I relate to so much: she loves HGTV, and she’s obsessed with House Hunters.

In the May 13 episode of Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the former first lady, 61, revealed that when she wants to, as the host phrased it, “disconnect, check out and just have fun,” she watches HGTV. “My version of golf to Barack, because he’s got golf on all the time — he says, ‘It’s my background noise’ — so my version of that is HGTV,” Michelle revealed to a visibly excited Amy Poehler, who responded, “I love HGTV. Let’s talk about it.”

The first show Michelle named? A channel fixture since 1999. “House Hunters,” she said. “There’s something so soothing about the arc of that. You know? You look for a house. We just like looking at people’s houses.”

The Light We Carry author then asked Poehler, 53, a question that divides fans of the long-running series: “Do you prefer when the budget is a low-budget house or a high-budget house? Because sometimes I feel a way, especially House Hunters International.”

In response, Poehler said, “Okay, I’m obsessed with House Hunters International. First of all, every place looks so … I’m like, ‘Wow, you can get that for that money?’ Like, I’m always blown away by what you can get. I’m always like, ‘Should I move to Morocco?’ But usually, they’re never gonna get anything with that budget. And then…”

“They get something with the budget,” Michelle stepped in. “And don’t you like the way people have such high expectations with a low budget? Like, ‘These aren’t marble.’ It’s like, but you wanna pay a hundred dollars a month, you know? Why would you get marble? And then the real estate agent is, and especially in the foreign countries, incredulous. It’s like, ‘Oh, you want a yard for a large dog?’ I love it though.”

And Michelle also loves the HGTV shows focused on what comes after the purchase, she revealed. “Oh, love all the makeover stuff. I love Rock the Block,” the Becoming author said, before explaining — and praising — the premise of the series to an unfamiliar Poehler.

“This is when they get all the designers from all the other [HGTV] shows, and they come on to one block of newly built houses from scratch, and they compete for rooms to see each week,” Michelle explained. “So the designers go in. They have a week or whatever to redo that area, and then they’re judged by other designers. And then they win, and they collect points until they finish the whole house. It’s an amazing concept,” she added of the series, as Poehler added that “that seems like the highest budget in the world.”

As for why they enjoy renovation and makeover series like Rock the Block, Poehler offered, “Just a completion. There’s an end where something is done.”

“And I like the before and after,” Michelle added. “I like the, ‘Oh wow, those floors look much better.’ ”

[From People]

House Hunters International is WILD! I love that show and I wish HGTV aired it more often. These days, you have to be really lucky and find a marathon once in a blue moon. But HHI is more fantasy – the fantasy of picking up and moving to another country, seeing what you could get in a certain price range. It’s more fun when the people have money AND wild expectations. But I honestly prefer the home makeover shows, for the reason Amy says – the completion, the actual end result within a 30-minute or 60-minute show. I’m a big fan of Ben and Erin Napier (Home Town) and Dave and Jenny Marrs (Fixer to Fabulous). I like a married couple working together, especially when they have a good marriage.

Alba Rohrwacher Amy Poehler Fashion Meg Ryan Oscars Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldaña won the first Oscar of the night in Yves Saint Laurent: one of the worst looks?

As Zoe Saldaña swept the Best Supporting Actress category this awards season we really saw that she wears her heart on her sleeve. She got choked up in almost every speech, and it was moving. Zoe feels things deeply, and that obviously informs her work because she’s capitivating on screen. For all the things you can say about Emilia Perez, Zoe turned in an incredible and mesmerizing performance. I’m happy for her and I hope to see more of her on screen for years to come. Here’s Zoe’s acceptance speech. She said “I’m the proud child of immigrant parents” and that she was the first American of Dominican descent to win.

Zoe’s fashion last night was largely considered a miss. She wore an Yves Saint Laurent empire waist gown with a sequin bandeau top with a skirt made of layered balloons of fabric. The top might have worked in a different gown and maybe the bottom could be salvaged with a more voluminous dress but the overall effect was fug. I would also like to have seen bolder makeup. She’s lovely though and I dig her fabulous necklace and mesh gloves. They’re very old Hollywood.

Last year’s winner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, presented in this category. I don’t have an ID for Da’Vine’s dress and I looked hard so let me know if you’ve seen it. It’s kind of a snooze but it’s really decent for a presenter. We saw several dresses like that last night. I like the trailing chiffon.

Speaking of nondescript dresses, Amy Poehler was in a strapless black mermaid style gown. She presented best original screenplay, which went to Sean Baker for Anora. Amy made her red carpet debut with her boyfriend, Joel Lovett! He’s a former editor for the NY Times, according to JustJared. They’re cute together!

I’m including presenter Meg Ryan here, although this Ashi Studio gown is kind of banging. It’s classic and striking and I like the bold jewel tone. Meg’s bit with Billy Crystal presenting Best Picture was fun. I forgot how many times he’s hosted The Oscars.

Presenter Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher (Maria) was in a crazy ruffled Valentino gown that I mildly respect. Valentino so often toes the fug line but makes up for it in whimsy. This is very Beetlejuice-coded. Valentino did her makeup too and this seems to be her standard look. There’s something IDGAF about this. She’s also reminding us that we could have had Angelina Jolie at the Oscars.

Globes already begging Tina Fey & Amy Poehler to host next year

At the bottom of this article is a video that I watch…. maybe 6 times a year. It’s Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the 2015 Golden Globes. Specifically their flawless opening roast of audience.

The witty pair have hosted the awards three times already in 2013, 2014 and the above mentioned 2015.  Each fantastic.  So it’s not rocket science to figure out that the Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc is going to go back to that well for more.  But will the ladies be interested?

Well those snooping sleuthers at Page six say that conversations are already happening. That would make me very happy. Start your day off with a smile and watch Tina and Amy below at their last show in 2015. Or watch their 2013 show here and their 2014 show here.

What’s Amy Poehler Using So Much Water On?

I don’t live in LA so I’m probably wrong about this, but I feel like, generally speaking, the southern half of California is pretty much always in the midst of a drought, or at least awaiting another drought and therefore trying to conserve water. Rich people in LA use a shit ton of water, and even though authorities have vowed to issue fines for excessive water usage, some of them really don’t give AF and do it anyway. However, Amy Poehler‘s water usage last summer was… a bit beyond comprehension, and inquiring minds want to know: what the hell did she use all that water on?

From Gawker:

According to the Los Angeles Times, Poehler—who is reportedly single and has two children—used 170,000 gallons of water between May and July last summer. That averages out to about 2,786 gallons of water a day; for context, the national average for a family of four is about 400 gallons, according to the EPA.

A lot of people in the comments have guessed that she probably had a leak somewhere in her system that she didn’t know about, and that does seem like the likeliest culprit, but WTF? How is that even possible? Even if you had an acre of beautiful green grass that needed watering and two swimming pools, you wouldn’t use that much. Something very strange is going on here! Not anything strange enough to care much about beyond reading this article (though water conservation is a serious thing, so I’m not belittling that!), but you know.
